1. Curriculum Standards Addressed: K.RFS.2- Phonological Awareness Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). Indicator a: Recognize and produce rhyming words. 2. Cross Curricular Connections: Math K.CC.5- Count to tell the number of objects. 5. Count to answer how many? questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; give a number from 1-20, count out that many objects. 3. Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: Students will be able to count and know how many letters are in their first name with 100% accuracy by writing their name and counting the letters one by one. 4. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Before lesson: I will ask each child individually if they know how many letters are in their first name. I will also ask them if they know their alphabet in order from A to Z. During lesson: Ask questions while reading the story and take anecdotal notes on certain children I find having a hard time understanding the rhyming concept of the book. After lesson: We will complete a small group activity where the student will count out the number of letters in their name and paste them to their own Coconut Tree just like in the book. 5. Materials/Resources: -Read aloud book: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault -Crayons -Markers -Glue sticks -Foam letters -Pre-cut construction pieces to make coconut tree (Per Student: 4 green leaves, 2 brown circles for coconuts, 1 page of colored paper for background, 1 brown rectangle for the trunk of the tree and name/ number card) - Example of my own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree that I have pre made to display. -Pre/During/Post assessment charts

-Lesson plan print out 6. Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Students should be able to already identify and write their name. 7. Procedures: 1. Invite the class to the meeting rug by what table they are sitting at. 2. Show the class the book and tell them what we will be doing. (Let them know what they are about to do.) 3. Ask if anyone knows what rhyming means while holding up a piece of paper that says, Rhyming. 4. After allowing students to give input, explain what the word means. 5. Explain to the students that we will be reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault and for them to be listening very carefully for rhyming words and the letters of the alphabet. 6. Point out the author and illustrator of book. 7. Show the front cover, back cover, title page, and spine of the book to familiarize them with where they are on a book. 8. Begin reading the book. 9. Point out rhyming words on every other page. 10. Point out the letters of the alphabet in the book as I read and let them predict what letters are coming next. 11. After completing the book, ask the class questions about what happened to the letters as they climbed up the tree. 12. Ask about the rhyming words in the book and see if they can give me a few of their own. 13. Show my example of the activity sheet that I completed prior to class to show them what they will be making. 14. Explain what I want them to do in order to complete the activity correctly. 15. Ask if there are any questions and answer them. 16. Dismiss the students by table groups to head back to their tables quietly and get out their glue sticks and crayons. 17. Hand out individual baggies that I have pre-sorted which contain the pieces of construction paper pieces that they will use to make their name tree. 18. Work with a small group and guide them while they complete their Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree. I will make sure they are counting and writing out all the letters in their name. 19. After everyone is finished with the activity, thank the class for their great listening skills and tell them how great of a job they have done on the activity. 20. Hand the class back over to Mrs. Driggers. 8. Accommodations: I will have KaMiyah, who wears glasses, to sit closer to the front of the rug where I will be displaying the book so that she will not have any trouble seeing the pictures or words. 9.
