SUBJECT: PURPOSE:
SHAFT INSPECTION
Some operators have reported excessive spline wear on dual element fuel pump drive shafts. This CSL, therefore, intends to assure satisfactory pump operation tly having operators check drive shaft backlash each 200 hours. It describes (1) a quick method to externally check spline wear, (211 if required, a procedure to determine spline wear and (3) replacement instructions for shafts with spline wear beyond 0.004 inch. All 250 6877719, NOTE: series dual element fuel 6856250, and 6876803. P/N 6851555, require this muff spline (C20) which pumps: P/N 6854292, 6857548,

Run your finger nail or suitab~ie pointed object across the worn spline surface (Figure 11). Reject the drive shaft if your finger nail or pointed object catches on the wear step. If you have any doubts whether spline wear is acceptable, compare the wear step with a 0.004-in. feeler gage. Reject the drive shaft and shouldered shaft if drive shaft wear step is greater than 0.004 inch. Install Shaft a. an acceptable as follows: or new P/N OS14622 Drive
1.
Before an acceptable drive shaft is reinstalled, align the shaft match marks with the outer drive gear match marks. Then install the drive sha~ft (Figure 10). During a new shaft installation, it may be necessary to sliohtlv turn the pump outer drive gear in either direction. The relationship between the forward (long) and aft (short) splines on the drive shaft is optional, i.e., they do not line up. (1) Visually, rejected splines compare the new shaft short splines and shaft splines with re:spect to the long to determine direction of rotation.
b.
(2)
For example, if the short splines on the new shaft are located further to the right (CW) than short splines on the rejected shaft, slightly turn the new shaft and outer drive gear CCW until the short splines mesh with the inner drive gear. If the short splines are further to the left (CCW), turn the new shaft CW. Since the easier to shouldered P/N P/N 02-14623 pump drive gears are spring-loaded, rotate the pump outer gear with the shaft installed on the drive shaft. Spacer around drive shaft (Fig. it is
