Vice-President of Academic Representation

I am currently a third year student at Brunel studying Modern Drama. I am also the Treasurer for the Brunel Drama Society and am trusted by various students and lecturers to carry out a variety of roles in the School of Arts. I have managed the Arts@Artaud multi-arts event on campus for the past two years and hold a place on the current Brunel Touchpoint team, the body responsible for giving funding to selected Arts projects. I am known as being extremely reliable and have helped a diverse range of students and faculty from different schools across the University; including but not limited to: Law, Maths, Psychology and Engineering. I always finish any task set in front of me with complete professionalism and efficiency. My enthusiasm for Brunel is unrivalled - I want to be the one to oversee progression and development in the Universitys academic schemes. I am extremely academically focused for a Drama student and will bring a level-head and a knack for problem-solving to the position of Vice-President of Academic Representation. I am also politically neutral and tend to seek logical solutions rather than stick blindly to party politics.

AIMS FOR OUR FUTURE

RELIABILITY - Clearer assignment feedback and a procedure to complain about poor-quality feedback
I often hear complaints from students across the University that feedback given can still be unclear and often very poor in quality, with students not knowing how they could have improved. I want to make strides in this area, where feedback has strict guidelines and if a student feels confused or unsatisfied with feedback I want there to be a transparent procedure for students to complain. This procedure would be independent of the original assessor and feedback would be judged on its ability to explain; the grade would be unaffected (unless this has been disputed as well).

REPRESENTATION - Better representation for all departments of all schools and targeted incentives for Student Reps
I want the Student Representatives to be more active than ever before, most students I have spoken to do not even know who their School Representative is, this needs to change. Representatives should be as easily recognised and as easily contacted as any member of staff. They should be the voice for their courses and be first point of contact for lecturers trying to understand frustrated students. I hope to add an incentive scheme to the Student Representative initiative to make Reps more active and better motivated on their job. It will also be a Representatives job to promote new academic schemes to their school.

RESOURCES Make the most of our currently under-used resources, especially Blackboard
The Blackboard service needs promoting as I feel it is an under-utilised facility. With the recent update making Blackboard even more powerful, new features include dynamic content embedding - such as videos; more social interaction, no more lost and unanswered emails; and the possibility of online assessments with faster grading. I want more happening in Blackboard and want it to become an integral part of digitally-enhanced learning for students and staff. Lecturers and students need to be able to fully understand and use the exciting facilities we already have for peer-to-peer learning and beyond.

REJUVENATION - Maintain and improve library standards and other academic facilities
As a frequent user of the Library, I am mostly impressed by how extensive our Library can be, but I am often confronted by missing books or lack of information in key areas. I want the process of applying for new books in the Library to be easier for each school, with the ability to suggest books missing from the e-catalogue using ISBN numbers online; book relevancy would then be assessed by appropriate staff. The 24-hour opening times are handy, but sometimes arent in affect at key times of the year for some students. I would like the Library to have a better understanding of assessment dates and - when the timetable is particularly congested - extend Friday and Saturday hours past 5pm in specially selected weeks. As someone who has helped a handful of overseas students with their written English on essays, I also understand the troubles of doing a course in a second language and hope to improve support for overseas students if and when they need it. I also want to encourage collaboration on projects across departments and schools in the University. My predecessor has done a fantastic job maintaining a high profile at Brunel and I am committed to being just as easily contacted and easy to talk to. I am here to listen to YOUR views on YOUR subjects; its my job to then go talk to relevant people to find satisfying solutions for everyone.

ON THE CAMPAIGN
I want this to be our campaign. A social campaign. A campaign that you can share, like and be a part of. I want to create a campaign that allows me to prove that I am definitely the man for the job. I will not disappear after elections; I am here to be a major part of University life - to be reliable and resourceful in Brunels representation and rejuvenation.
