THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST Location: The UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST, GHANA, is one of the rare sea-front Universities in the World. Its main entrance is only about 50 meters from the Atlantic Ocean. It is strategically located along the shores of the Gulf of Guinea, midway between the famous Cape Coast Castle, the first seat of the British Government until 1879 and the Elmina Castle, the first point of call of the first European merchants to the Gold Coast in 1847. Mission: The University was established in 1962 originally to train graduate professional teachers for Ghana's second cycle institutions as well as the Ministry of Education. Today, in addition to the above, the University offers a wide range of academic programmes in the Arts, Education, Social Sciences, Sciences, Business, Agriculture and Medicine. Vision: The vision of the University is to become a Centre of Excellence in Africa and the world for human resource and entrepreneurship development in education and related sectors. Academic Programmes: The academic programmes of the University are vested in its eight Faculties/Schools. The Faculties of Arts, Education, Social Sciences and the Schools of Agriculture, Business, Physical, Biological and Medical Sciences. The Faculties/Schools are each headed by a Dean and are sub-divided into Academic Departments, Institutes and Centres. There are also an Academic Quality Assurance Unit (AQAU) and a
Professional Counselling Centre. The Departments also offer academic counselling to students. All together, over 50 academic programmes are mounted each year at the Diploma, Bachelor, Master's and Doctorate levels. Library Facilities: The University has an ultramodern library complex. It has capacity for stocking about 750,000 volumes as well as a seating capacity for 2000 readers. In addition to the E-mail and Internet, the Library also has an Inter-Library Loan and Document Delivery facility (ILL/DD). Student Enrolment: Student enrolment 17,000 and includes foreign students. is about
Halls of Residence: Currently, the University has limited accommodation in six halls of residence namely, Adehye (Females only), Casely-Hayford (Males only), Oguaa, Atlantic, Valco and the Kwame Nkrumah Hall (Mixed). Medical Services: There is a University Health Services which is headed by a Director of Health Services. Currently, the hospital has a 33-bed capacity with an Out-Patient Department (OPD) capable of attending to over 300 patients daily. There is also an Environmental Health Services Unit which deals with general sanitation on the campus. Places of Interest: In addition to a lovely beach along the Atlantic ocean, there are also the following places of interest.

FIRST DEGREE PROGRAMMES POST-SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL CANDIDATES BASIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: The Minimum Admission Requirement into the University of Cape Coast for WASSCE applicants is aggregate 36. For SSSCE applicants, the minimun requirement is aggregate 24. Candidates must have passes in six (6) subjects with overall aggregate of 36/24 at the WASSCE/SSSCE level respectively Three of the six subjects must be core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies and three must be in relevant electives. For purposes of admission, a pass in (i) (ii) WASSCE means Grade: A1 C6. SSSCE means Grade: A D.
In addition to the above, candidates must satisfy requirements as indicated below: FACULTY OF ARTS (A) B.A. (ARTS)
i. Candidates must have passes in at least two (2) elective Arts subjects: French, Literature in English,
Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Dagare/Ga), Music, Religious Studies, Government/History. ii. Applicants to be admitted to read French as part of their degree programme must have a pass in French not below grade C6. (B) B.A. (AFRICAN STUDIES)
i. Applicants to be admitted to B.A. (African Studies) programme must have passes in at least two (2) of the following elective subjects with grades not lower than C6: French, History, Literature in English, Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Dagare/Ga), Religious Studies, Government, Economics, Geography. ii Applicants who intend to read B.A. (African Studies) and major in African Music (Ethnomusicology) must have in addition to B (i). iii Associated Board of the ROYAL SCHOOL OF MUSIC (ABRSM) grade 1-4 OR iv A flair for Music and the ability to read and notate simple melodies and rhythmic patterns to be assessed by pre-admission test. (C) B.A. (THEATRE STUDIES)
i. Candidates must have passes in at least two Elective Arts subjects: Literature in English, Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Dagare/Ga), Music, Religious Studies, History/Government.
ii. Applicants who intend to read B.A. (Theatre Studies) as their major subject must have a good pass (not below C6) in Literature in English at the WASSCE. (D) BACHELOR OF MUSIC
i. Candidates must have good passes in three (3) elective subjects in any of the following elective areas: General Arts and Visual Arts. ii. Prospective candidates will be interviewed. During the interview, candidates will have to provide evidence of their involvement/interest in music and dance-e.g. through membership in choirs, bands, cultural/dance troupes, etc. and generally convince panelists of their creative/artistic capabilities. Applicants who wish to study Music but have not passed music at WASSCE Level will write an Entrance Examination provided they satisfy the basic University Entry Requirements. The Entrance Examination date will be the same for the Mature Students Examination. (E) B.A. ( COMMUNICATION STUDIES)
i Candidates must have passes in at least two (2) elective Arts subjects; French, Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Dagare/Ga), Literature in English, Religious Studies, Government/History. ii Applicants to be admitted to read B.A. (Communication Studies) must have a pass in Literature in English not below grade C5.

In addition, candidates must have good passes in three (3) elective subjects under Accounting/Secretarial options namely; Accounting, Business Management, Economics, Clerical Office Duties, Typing and Principles of Costing. A good pass in Literature in English will be an advantage. B.Ed. (SOCIAL SCIENCES) Candidates must have good passes in Core English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies. Candidates must possess GCE 'O' Level credit passes (grade 6 or better) in five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics and General Science. Passes at the GCE 'A' Level will be an advantage. Or ii. SSSCE/WASSCE candidates with good passes in Core English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science. In addition to (i) or (ii) above, candidates must possess a THREE (3) YEAR DIPLOMA awarded by an accredited Health Training Institution with at least THREE (3) YEARS working experience (excluding rotation for nurses) in relevant areas such as General Nursing, Environmental Health, Disease Control, Community Health, Midwifery Nutrition or Psychiatry. Applicants should include certified copies of their academic transcript showing semester-by-semester GPA and FCGPA.
FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (i) B.A. (SOCIAL SCIENCES) Candidates must obtain passes in Core English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies. In addition, candidates must have passes in three (3) elective subjects including two (2) of the following: Economics, Government/History, Geography, and Elective Mathematics. (ii) B.Sc. Candidates must have passes in the following core subjects: English, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies. ii. In addition, candidates must have passes in three (3) elective subjects under any of the options below: OPTION 1: General Agriculture, Chemistry, and any one other Science/Agriculture subject OPTION 2: Chemistry, Biology and Physics/Elective Mathematics.
OPTION 3: Any three subjects from the following Agricultural Science electives - General Agriculture, Crop Husbandry and Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Forestry. B.Sc. (AGRICULTURAL EXTENTION & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT) i. Candidates must have passes in the following Core subjects: English, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies. ii. In addition, candidates must have passes in three (3) elective subjects under any of the options below: OPTION 1: General Agriculture, Chemistry, and ANY one other Agricultural Science subject OPTION 2: Chemistry, Biology and Physics/Elective Mathematics. OPTION 3: Any three subjects from the following Agricultural Science electives - General Agriculture, Crop Husbandry and Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Forestry. SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB, ChB) i. Candidates must have passes in Core English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science

In addition to the above, candidates must have obtained good passes in three of the following elective subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Elective Mathematics. Applicants who satisfy the above requirements must have a total aggregate of 08 or better in six subjects (3 Core and 3 Electives) to qualify for short listing. Applicants will be required to attend an interview. Applicants who are applying into the School of Medical Sciences should note that the programme is strictly FEE-PAYING.

GCE A LEVEL APPLICANTS i. Credit passes at GCE O Level in 6 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. GCE A Level passes in three (3) of the following: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics, with aggregate 07 or better. None of the grades should be lower than C. Selection will be subject to performance at interview.

POST-DIPLOMA CANDIDATES The University of Cape Coast runs a full-time PostDiploma Degree Programme as follows: Applicants in this category should fill the Post-Diploma Application for Admission Forms. BASIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A good Diploma (a minimum of Second Class Lower Division or better) obtained from the University of Cape Coast or equivalent institutions with at least two (2) years post qualification teaching/working experience. Possess a Veterinary Assistant (Technical Officer) Certificate from the Animal Production and Health College (Pong-Tamale) or allied institutions offering Certificate progammes with strong animal health content.
