How Exercise Affects Heart Rate
Background
Our previous unit was breathing and respiration and now we are studying about
the heart and circulation. When a person exercises, they respire and their heart rate
changes. We did this experiment to see how exercise affects the heart rate.

Aim
Our group’s aim was to see how different types of exercises gave
different heart rates. We were trying to find out which exercise gave the
highest heart rate and which exercise gave the lowest heart rate.

Variables
Independent variable- types of exercise
Dependent variable- heart rate
Controlled variable- the time we spend doing the exercise, the same person should
do all the exercises, the atmosphere should be the same, her heart rate has to return
to her resting pulse before she can do another activity, use the same laptop, and do
it more than once so the data you get is reliable…
How we controlled the controlled variables- we did each exercise for 30 seconds,
Mackenzie was doing all the exercising, we did everything in the same place and
same time to keep the atmosphere the same, she rested and let her heart rate rest
before starting another exercise, we used the same laptop all throughout and we
did three trials for each exercise to make it a fair test and get more reliable data.

Hypothesis
My hypothesis was that when Mackenzie does cardio vascular exercises such as
jumping jacks, climbing the stairs, running and jogging, she will have a higher
heart rate as opposed to if she does muscular exercises like push-ups and sit-ups. I
thought that her heart rate after muscular exercises would only be 3/4 of his heart
rate after cardio vascular activity. For example if she gets a heart rate of 96 after
push-ups, I thought she would get 128 after running.

Materials
For this experiment we needed a laptop, the pulse detector, a stopwatch, a large
area to carry out the experiment, stairs, and most importantly Mackenzie.
Procedure
1. Start the software
2. Connect the pulse monitor to Mackenzie
3. Find her resting pulse
4. She does 30 seconds of exercise
5. Use the stopwatch to time her and make sure she does it for 30 seconds
6. Clip the pulse finder to Mackenzie after she’s done and find her heart rate
7. Let Mackenzie rest and check that here heart rate returns to the resting pulse
she got earlier
8. Once she has reached her resting pulse, repeat steps 4 to 7 twice with the same
exercise. (this is for the trials to make it a more fair test)
9. Then repeat steps 4 to 8 five more times but with a different exercise each time

Results Table
We didn’t have enough time to do all the different exercises and trials because the
laptop wasn’t working and neither was the pulse detector so we had to do it
manually and our results weren’t accurate or complete. Instead we used the results
of a group from block E who did complete it and were accurate enough.

Conclusion
Our original aim was to find what the maximum heart rate was after
different types of exercises.

My hypothesis was that cardio vascular or aerobic exercises would have a

higher heart rate as opposed to muscular exercises. I predicted that the anaerobic
exercises would have a heart rate of 3/4th of the heart rate of aerobic activity.

We used block E’s results. Looking at the table of results and the graph I
can conclude that all the aerobic activity gave a maximum heart rate of 120 to 125
and the anaerobic exercises gave a maximum heart rate of 95 to 100. The cardio
vascular exercises had a higher heart rate than muscular exercises like I predicted
in my hypothesis.

Evaluation
We had many problems while doing this experiment which is why we had
to use the other class’ results. One major problem was using the apparatus because
it only worked once in a while and wasn’t at all reliable. We spent more than half
the lesson just trying to make the equipment work but weren’t successful. We
eventually found a laptop that someone was done using and worked but we didn’t
have enough information to make a graph. This was our only problem. If I were to
do it again, I would not use the computer. Instead I would do it the old fashioned
way using my hands and counting how many times I hear her heart beat in 15
seconds then multiply that by four.
