RYERSON UNIVERSITY Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering FLUID MECHANICS II - MEC616 Midterm Test

DATE: 28 February 2012 SECTIONS: 011-041 TIME: 90 minutes

EXAMINER: Prof. R.S. Budny ASSOCIATE: Dr. W. Leong

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. OPEN BOOK TEST. Suggested aids for your own personal use are: course textbook, class notes, assignments, solutions, non-communicating electronic calculator, drawing instruments (i.e., rolling ruler, set squares, protractor, small magnifying glass, pens). 2. Prohibited items include: cell-phones (text and/or video display), pagers and other wireless devices, Palm-pilots, laptop computers, radios/video/music players etc.. These must be switched off and left at the front of the test room. 3. Leave all bags and brief cases at the front of the test room. Travelling back and forth to bags and brief cases while the test is in progress is not permitted. 4. Candidates may not borrow or lend any materials while the test is in progress. 5. Answer all three (3) questions. Questions are of equal percent value (33 % each). 6. Answer questions in the space provided. You may use the back of the page if required. Do not attach or insert any answers on scrap sheets of paper these will not be marked. 7. Candidates must layout their work clearly and legibly at all times; otherwise, marks may be lost. Illegible answers will not be graded. 8. Full marks will be awarded for correct answers using the correct method. Marks will be deducted for incorrect units. 9. Use engineering judgment when answering questions. If you feel that there is a genuine error or omission in any question then make an assumption and draw this to the attention of the examiner right on the test paper and continue with the solution. 10. Do not detach any sheets from the test paper.

MEC616.W12 QUESTION 1.

- 2 of 4 -

Midterm Test

In the questions below it may be necessary to obtain property and pipe data from tables and/or charts. (a) A pipe is to convey 0.165 m3/s of water and the flow velocity must be between 1.4 m/s to 2.8 m/s. If a schedule 30 pipe is to be selected, then: i) What is the largest nominal diameter pipe size that can be used?

ii) What is the smallest nominal diameter pipe size that can be used?

(b) Water flows inside copper tubing. The average flow velocity is fixed at 2 m/s. Determine the nominal diameter and type of tubing (i.e., K, L, or M) that should be selected so that the flow rate is nearest to 520 L/min without exceeding that value.

(c) Water ( = 1000 kg/m3) flows inside a horizontal 100-m-long section of 50-mm-diameter pipeline with an average flow velocity of 2 m/s and the Reynolds number is 1 x 105. Suggest one type of pipe material for this application if the pressure drop is not to exceed 88 kPa.

(d) SAE 10 oil flows inside a 50-mm-diameter pipeline with an average flow velocity of 1.61 m/s. At what oil temperature will the flow transition from laminar to turbulent flow?

Midterm Test

A pump is used to deliver water through the piping system shown in the figure below. The pipes are 4-nominal schedule 40 PVC plastic (=0) and all fittings are regular and flanged. Note that the elevation of point 4 is higher than the elevation of point 1. Determine the flow rate, Q (in m3/s), of water through the pipe system. Include the effects of frictional and minor losses. The friction factor f must be based on the Reynolds number ReD for the given flow conditions and the surface roughness in the pipe. NOTE: To solve the problem it may be necessary to look up data from tables and/or charts. State any necessary assumptions.

Midterm Test

Water flows through two parallel pipes that lie in a horizontal plane. Using a suitable iterative technique, determine the flow rates Q1 and Q2 in cubic metres per second through each pipe when the total inflow is 0.6 m3/s. Use an appropriate friction factor f suitable for the flow conditions in each pipe. Minor losses at the junctions and bends may be ignored.
