During the season of Lent we will have a sermon series on Giving It Up and Taking It On. Often we think about giving up something such as chocolate during Lent. This year we will consider attitudes to give up during Lent (and beyond!). It is traditional during Lent to not only give up something but also to take on something positive, holy or service-oriented. This year we will take on new attitudes and actions. Join us for these worship services as we seek to grow in Christ. Pictorial Directories Expected By Mid-March The new pictorial church directories should be ready by mid-March. We are delighted to include approximately 150 photographs of church members and friends. We hope this will help us all put names with faces and grow in our sense of connection and community here at DPC. The directory will be available in print version for $5 with a binder; $4 without a binder. It will also be available on-line through our web site and will be password protected. This will allow us to always have an up-to-date version of the directory. Further, you will be able to access the directory on your Smart Phones, Ipads and other electronic devices with a special app. Thanks for your patience in waiting for the most complete printed directory we can provide you at this time. Thank you to Rusty Norton, Mason Murawski, Wanda Hale, Elaine Minch and Deborah Dail for their work on the directory.

Would you like to explore membership in Denbigh Presbyterian Church? Thank you to Iris Lewis for coordinating the study; to Debbie Ames, Kristi Spivey, Sandi Murawski and Deborah Dail for being Small Group Leaders; to Alicia Lewis for providing childcare and to all who have participated.

On March 1-3 approximately 75 women from Denbigh and Great Bridge Presbyterian Churches have been on a retreat in Williamsburg. Our pastor Deborah Dail is the retreat leader . We welcome this time of prayer, learning and fellowship.

Adult I Sunday School Class Reaches Out With: The Adult I class collects a free-will offering (mostly pennies and other loose change) each week. A total of $103.00 was collected during 2012, and the class presented that money to a family from Myanmar who worship at Wythe Presbyterian and whose daughter was struck and killed while crossing Kecoughtan Road on her way to the church.

The Adult I Sunday School class begins a new quarter on Sunday, March 3, with a study in both the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. Topics to be studied include the Kingdom of God, Resurrection Hope (during the Easter season), and a Call to Holy Living. The study will consist of readings in Daniel, Luke, 1&2 Thessalonians, and 1&2 Peter. If, like many of us, your knowledge of almost anything is greater than your knowledge of the Bible, this class is a great way to start overcoming that. And it may change your life. Please consider joining in on Sunday mornings at 9:15 in the Conference Room.

Denbigh Presbyterian Pre-Kindergarten

February was a fun month at DPPK. The three year old classes were working on shapes, numbers, and the colors pink and red. The 2 year old class made special snowmen to take home to share with their families. Both groups talked about love and passed out valentines to their friends. Our four year olds learned about Presidents and how to stay healthy. February is Heart Health Month, so we had a visit from an orthopedic nurse, with her skeleton friend, Mr. Bones. It is also Dental Health Month, so Courtney from Dr. Avents and Dr. Huies dental practice came to talk about how to keep our teeth healthy. Thanks to Mrs. Marshall and Mr. Norton who helped out at our second chapel. Students brought more than 25 canned goods to donate to DUCO. DPPK is prepared for our next rating under the Virginia Star Quality Initiative. We are expecting our rater to visit during the first two weeks of March, and we should have our star rating by mid-April. If you happen to see any of the Pre-k staff around the building, please take a moment to let them know you appreciate how hard they have worked to be ready! Maggie Vincelette DPPK Director

The One Great Hour of Sharing offering will be collected on March 31. Please look for brochures and envelopes in the Sunday bulletins starting Sunday, March 3. This year funds will go to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Self-Development of People, and Presbyterian Hunger Program. Remember, Sharing Brings Joy!

The Prime Timers offer a big THANK YOU to the Presbyterian Women for sponsoring, and the high school youth and their leaders for preparing and serving, our Valentines luncheon on February 17. The dcor was beautiful, the meal delicious and the service rivaled any 5-star restaurant! This is the last year Lisa and David Canaday, Becky Skarr and Jim Hiltabidle will be leading the high school youth. We certainly appreciate all the luncheons they have served us the last few years!

Valentine's Luncheon Enjoyed By All Even though Valentine's Day and the luncheon are only a pleasant memory now, we, the Women of our Church, would like to thank our dedicated youth and their leaders, Lisa and David Canaday. We are so fortunate each year to have the generation before us set a beautiful table with food that was prepared with much thought and love. There are many who worked behind the scenes who were part of the team. Our gratitude goes to them as well. It is a perfect example of how the generational divide can be overcome. God bless, Anneliese Collins, Presbyterian Women

Are you a graduate or do you have a graduate in your family?

We have set Sunday, June 2 to celebrate and pray for the graduates in worship. We need your help to make this a meaningful celebration. Please call the church office at 8772048 to confirm your graduate can attend the events on June 2. We know that many are working and traveling, but we are hopeful that the day might be cleared on schedules. Please submit to the church office several pictures of your graduate (ideas are the senior picture, one from a church event, a baby picture etc.). We need these photos by May 19. Also, please complete an information form with details about your graduate and his/her future plans for inclusion in the Graduate Brochure.

Many of us are already longing for summer and have begun making plans for the special ways we will spend our time this summer. Our Childrens and Youth Ministry Committee invites you to consider sending your child or teen to our Presbyterian summer camp. Makemie Woods, located near Williamsburg, offers a variety of camps for children who are entering first grade through teens who are in high school. We believe church camp experiences help nurture and strengthen the faith of our children and youth. We encourage you to go to www.makwoods.org to see the many and varied camp offerings and the camp schedule. There are Makemie Woods camp brochures outside of Liz Marshalls office. You may also see Liz or Kathy Baldwin for assistance. In past years DPC has been able to provide many scholarships for camp, but due to church budget constraints our scholarship funds are more limited than usual. As the economy continues to impact us individually it also has impacted the church. While we still will be able to provide some assistance, we ask all families to carefully and prayerfully consider what you can afford to contribute to the cost of your child/children attending camp. Makemie Woods offers a number of discounts. There is an Advanced Pay Discount when payment is made in full for the camp upon registration ($10 discount.) There is an Early Registration Discount if you register before April 1 ($10 discount) First Time Campers receive a $20 discount for one session only, Active Duty Military Dependents receive a $10 discount if either parent is currently serving in the armed forces or reserves. There is also a Family Discount when families are sending more than one child (subtract $30 from the camp fee of each additional child). We ask that everyone applying for scholarship assistance also register for camp in a timely manner to receive the maximum amount of discounts for which they are eligible. This will help you and the church as we try to stretch our dollars to assist as many campers as possible. Please note that camp applications should be in to Makemie Woods by April 1 to receive maximum discounts. You may register on-line at www.makwoods.org . Please see Kathy Baldwin for addition information and forms.
