1. Introduction
This document describes the design reference of the SIMCOM SIM300 module that used to design for handset, include the dual-mode mobile phone, PDA, and the others. The document mainly is about design notes, reference circuit and PCB layout reference. Reference document: SIM300_HD

2. Product concept
Designed for global market, SIM300 is a Tri-band GSM/GPRS engine that works on frequencies EGSM 900 MHz, DCS 1800 MHz and PCS1900 MHz. SIM300 provides GPRS multi-slot class 10 capability and support the GPRS coding schemes CS-1, CS-2, CS-3 and CS-4. With a tiny configuration of 40mm x 33mm x 2.85 mm , SIM300 can fit almost all the space requirement in your application, such as Smart phone, PDA phone and other mobile device. The physical interface between SIM300 and the mobile application is through a 60 pins board-to-board connector, which provides all hardware interfaces from module to customers boards except the RF antenna interface. The keypad and SPI LCD interface will give you the flexibility to develop customized applications. Two serial ports can help you easily develop your applications. Two audio channels include two microphones inputs and two speaker outputs. These audio interfaces can be easily configured by AT command. One ADC input Two GPIO ports and SIM card detection port

3. About Noise
Please pay attention to PCB layout about the SIM300 design. 1. The block of the SIM300 module is showed as the following figure. Please keep away from the RF part and the antenna when layout the audio trace. The top layer had better few trace and put the more digital GND. The underside of the module in top copper layer should show the copper, because the cover of the SIM300 can be connected to GND better. Please refer to the following figure, the red part is trace and GND in top layer, the yellow part is the bare copper in the top layer. The audio trace should be shielded by GND. Figure 1: LAYOUT reference 2. The digital GND and analogy GND can be connected by single point in some mainboard design of the handset. This can reduce the RF noise in the audio sign. Showed in the following figure, the yellow part is analogy GND, the others is trace and digital GND. The white flag is the single point that be connected between the digital GND and the analogy GND by VIA.

4. About power consumption

If the peripheral circuit of the module is designed by mistake, the power consumption of the system may be increase; some can cause the module very hot. 1The no matching voltage of the IO may cause the power consumption increase. For example, the users IO level is 5V, but connect directly to the module GPIO that work in 3V. We recommend to add the voltage converter in the circuit. 2 The no matching of the high and low level in the system may cause the power consumption increase, even can cause the module very hot. For example, the users IO is set low level and the module is high level. Showed in the following figure.

Figure 3: Interface level of the GPIO

5. About status indication

If the user has some requirements about the modules status indication, such as indicating power on or indicating power down. We recommend the PIN32 (GPIO5) and PIN36 (GPIO8) to user. Those two pins can be set by AT command and custom-built software. Showed in the following figure

6. About IO connector
The TXDRXDDBG_TXDDBG_RXDGND must be connected to the IO connector when SIM300 is used to design handset. the TXDRXD should be used for software upgrade and the DBG_TXD DBG_RXD for software debug. The PWRKEY pin is recommended to connect to the IO connector, Otherwise the users controller should control the PWRKEY in case of software upgrade. Please note that The PWRKEY should be pulled to GND or low level when SIM300 is upgrading software. Please refer to SIM300_HD for the detail.

7. About SIM card

Showed in the following figure, if the 10uF capacitor is used in the VSIM line, the SIM card may not be detected. The 100nF capacitor is recommended.

8. About Sleep Mode

The user can control the DTR pin of the module to exit the Sleep Mode. If the user want to exit Sleep Mode quickly. We recommend the KBR0 (pin37) to control the Sleep Mode. The Sleep Mode entered when the KBR0 pin is externally pulled to a high level and exited when the pin is pulled to a low level normally. Showed in the following figure.

9. About audio trace

We recommend that the audio trace is put in the middle layer in the PCB layout when designing the handset. We recommend that the audio trace is shielded with GND, add more via with GND net for reduce the RF noise.
