Chemical Safety Before handling chemicals o Read MSDS, use appropriate gloves, never handle chemicals without labels,

, label chemicals (chemical name, user name, date opened/preparation date, concentration) Handling chemicals o Never sniff any chemical, avoid direct skin contact, filter mask (handling fine powder), no gloves on door knob, no open flame near inflammable volatile liquids Dispose chemical waste in waste bottles Fire Safety Tongs/leather gloves when handling hot objects, small fire (allow to burn out/ damp cloth), large fire (seek help / extinguisher) Electrical Safety Inspect equipment, turn off the power; faulty instruments should be attended by trained personnel Gases Store in secure gas cylinders, away from excessive heat, ignition sources; transport them using trolley When handling, wear safety glasses, never use grease\oil to lubricate valves\ regulators, do not force open valves (damage), check for leakages, open windows, allow fresh air in (minor leakage) Chemical Spillage refer to MSDS for proper clean up procedures , use spillage kit, carefully contain the chemicals and tidy up workplace; proper disposal of waste add dilute HCl to neutralize alkali or sodium bicarbonate powder to neutralize acid (spillage) mercury spillage, report to demonstrator immediately skin or eye contact, immediately wash off with excess water, seek medical attention if needed chemical vapours inhalation, leave the place, take deep breath of fresh air glassware breakage, wear proper PPE, gather broken pieces, dispose sharp/broken glass bins, ensure broken chips free from chemical residue Fire Hazard attempt to extinguish incipient fire without taking personal risk, notify demonstrator, shut down electrical appliances, go to nearest exit and assembly point persons clothing catches fire, use fire blanket, roll victim until fire is smothered completely Types of Hazards Chemical (carcinogenic, toxicity, flammability) Biological (infection from micro organisms) Radiation (alpha, beta, gamma or X rays, lasers, sonicator) Mechanical (machinery) Physical and Environment (weather, ventilation, noise) Energy (electrical, pressure, fire) Risk Control Eliminate (replacing solvent, choose different process) Engineering controls (using safety guards, handling in BSC, alarms) Administrative measure (signage, training, maintenance) Personal Protective Equipment (gloves/respirators, face shields)
