1. A single-phase fully controlled thyristor converter is supplying a dc separately ex-
cited dc motor. Draw the neat waveform diagrams and explain various operating
modes of the drive both in motoring and regenerative braking for

to the motor back emf. Assume the armature of the separately excited dc
motor can be replaced by simple R-L and back emf load. [16]
2. Explain the Speed - torque Characteristics of a dc series motor connected to a three

3. (a) Discuss in detail with suitable circuit diagrams and waveforms, the speed
control operations of a separately excited d.c.motor using a circulating current
dual converter.
(b) A 230 Volts, 870 rpm, 100 A separately excited d.c.motor has an armature re-
sistance of 0.05 ohm. It is coupled to an over hauling load with a torque of 400
N-m. Determine the speed at which motor can hold the load by regenerative
braking. [8+8]
4. (a) Distinguish between class A and class B choppers with suitable examples of
speed control of motors.
(b) A 220V, 190A dc series motor has armature and eld resistances of 0.03 and
0.02 ohms respectively. Running on no load as a generator with eld wining
connected to a separate source it gave following magnetization characteristic
at 500rpm.

Motor is controlled by a chopper in dynamic braking with a braking resis-

i. Calculate motor speed for a duty ratio of 0.6 and motor current of 160A.

5. The rotor resistance and stand still reactance referred to stator of a 3 phase, 4 pole,
50 Hz Squirrel cage Induction motor is 0.2 ohm and 0.8 ohm per phase respectively.
The full load slip of the motor is 4 percent. Neglect stator resistance and leakage

1. Draw the equivalent circuit of a separately excited D.C motor and derive the ex-
pressions for motor torque and speed. [16]
2. (a) The speed of a 50 Kw 500 V 120 A 1500rpm a separately excited dc motor is
controlled by a three phase fully controlled converter and is fed from a 400V 50
Hz supply. Motor armature resistance is 0.1. Find the range of ring angle
required to obtain speeds between 1000rpm and (-1000)rpm at rated torque.
(b) Describe how the speed of a separately excited dc motor is controlled through
the use of two 3- phase full converters. [8+8]
3. A 230V 100A, 1200 rpm D.C Separately excited motor has an armature resistance
of 0.04 ohms. The motor armature is fed from a variable source with an internal
resistance of 0.056 ohms.
(a) Calculate internal voltage of the variable voltage source when the motor is
operating in regenerative breaking at 60% of the rated motor torque and 800
rpm.
(b) If the motor is operated under dynamic breaking at twice the rated torque
and 1000 rpm then calculate the value of breaking current and resistor by
assuming linear magnetic circuit. [16]
4. Describe how a four quadrant drive can be obtained from a chopper fed separately
fed dc series motor. [16]
5. Draw the following AC voltage controllers for varying the speed of a 3 phase In-
duction motor
(a) Star connected controller
(b) Delta connected controller
(c) Delta connected Stator and controller.
Discuss in detail about the above types of controllers. [16]
6. Explain briey the various methods of achieving variable frequency control of 3
Phase Induction motor using solid state switches SCRs / IGBTs. [16]
7. (a) Derive an expression for the torque T for the rotor resistance control using
chopper.

(a) With eld converter setting to maximum eld current, calculate ring angle
for the armature converter for load torque of 60 Nm at rated speed.

ture converter , speed is to be raised to 3000rpm. Determine the ring angle
of the eld converter. [16]
3. A 220V 200A, 800 rpm D.C Separately excited motor has an armature resistance
of 0.06 ohms. The motor armature is fed from a variable source with an internal
resistance of 0.04 ohms.
(a) Calculate internal voltage of the variable voltage source when the motor is
operating in regenerative breaking at 80% of the rated motor torque and 600
rpm.
(b) If the motor is operated under dynamic breaking at twice the rated torque and
800 rpm then calculate the value of breaking current and resistor by assuming
linear magnetic circuit. [16]
4. Explain the operation of four quadrant chopper fed to the D.C separately excited
motor and also draw the current and voltage wave forms for continuous current
operation. [16]
5. A 3 phase Squirrel cage Induction motor having 6 poles operating at 50 Hz has
rotor resistance and stand still reactance referred to stator are 0.2 ohm and 1 ohm
per phase when it is operated at rated voltage and rated frequency has a slip of
4 percent at full load . At what speed the motor will operate when the stator
impressed voltage is reduced to 1/1.414 times the rated voltage. Assume that the
load torque remains constant at the rated motor torque. [16]

1. Create a HTML document that has ve frames.There must be two rows of frames,
the rst with three frames and the other with two frames. The frames in the rst
row must have equal width. The left frame in the second row must be 50 percent
of the width of the display. Each of the frames in the top row must display a
document that has a form. The left top frame must have two test boxes, each
30 characters wide, labeled Name and Address. The middle top frame must have
ve radio buttons with color name labels. The right top frame must have four
checkboxes, labeled with four kinds of car equipment such as a CD player and air
conditioning. The two bottom frames must have images of two dierent cars. The
