THIRD SUDAY OF LET

Drawing water for household use is still largely a woman's task in
much of the world. Going to a communal water source-a well, cistern,
stream, or community tap-is part of the daily ritual for the women in many
families. With our municipal water systems and their complex machinery of
purification and storage, water from the tap is an ordinary fixture in daily life
for those of us who live in the developed world. Even in rural areas, where
homes have individual wells, water runs freely in the house aided by a pump
and pressure tank. Unlike people in many parts of the world, who still get
their water like the Samaritan woman in today's Gospel, most of us just turn
on a faucet, and water appears.
The Samaritan woman encounters Jesus at one of the typical village
meeting places of his day. Usually, the men would gather at the city gates.
The women would gather at the well, drawing water and exchanging news
of the day. While his disciples go into the village to find food, Jesus stops at
the well, and begins his conversation with the woman who would eventually
become his messenger to the townsfolk. While at first she expects Jesus to
give her free-flowing water (who wouldn't want to leave the burden of carry-
ing heavy jars of water behind), instead she discovers a prophet, about whom she testifies.
Human ingenuity and inventiveness have made daily life easier for many of us. Something as simple
as water flowing from a tap has made our lives so much better. Add to that all the other conveniences, and
our lives are far different from the people who lived in that small Samaritan town that Jesus visited so long
ago. But our need for salvation is the same. We may not have to carry water anymore. But we do need to
carry the message of Christ to all whom we meet.

DOUBLE YOUR MONEY
Many companies match their employees charitable con-
tributions. For example, if you donate $50 to St. Mary,
your employer may donate an additional amountsome
even double the amount of a personal contribution. Your
$50 becomes $100 to support St. Mary programs and
debt reduction.
Some companies provide the guidelines and forms to fill
out online, or you can check with your Human Resources
office. Some companies even match the contributions of
retirees and employees spouses. Its worth checking out!
ANOTHER DEBT REDUCTION PAYMENT
Finance Council has announced that (through the gener-
osity of our Parishioners), St. Mary will be making another
$50,000 payment directly toward the outstanding loan of
our Parish Life Center. This will save St. Marys approxi-

reduce the length of the loan by 14 months. Thank you
for your continued support! We are moving in the right
direction.
