Focus Lesson: This week we have started learning about the Romantic period, and how it ties in with all forms of art. Over the course of this unit, students will gather a better understanding of the period, including how and why it came about. Vocabulary will be addressed in both a guided modeling as well as individual practice. Collaborative Practice: Show the students various pieces of Romantic art (paintings, music, etc.) and ask them to write down various aspects and traits they notice. After each, have the students share within small groups about what they have perceived, then have the share with the group. Write down the traits on the board. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef-4Bv5Ng0w http://www.prints.com/prints.php?artist_id=2586&print_id=5072429&RF=30&gclid=CKXqlvjQyrMCFcxAMgodN WYA0Q http://www.sonnets.org/crowe.htm Have the students do a QUICK WRITE over the particular traits described by the class about the shown pieces of art, and how they may be similar and different. Think-pair-share. Guided Practice: Today were going to talk about the Romantic period, why it came about, and gain a better understanding of particular terms used when describing the style of art. Were going to the article Characteristics of Romanticism. Im going to provide a quick MENTAL MODEL of how I want you to approach the reading. (Decode and break down first paragraph of the article.) While youre reading, I would like you to focus on these particular terms, and focus on different ways to describe the term. Please provide 2-3 different ways to explain the term. Also, please highlight or underline any words you believe are important to know about when discussing the Romantic Period. Please be prepared to share with the class what you came up with. Independent Practice: For your EXIT SLIP, please revisit your QUICK WRITE and add what you learned about why those stylist traits are the way they are. Please look back to the article for reference. Your assignment is to find a piece of art from the Romantic Period and describe 5-7 stylistic traits that make it of the period. Please tie the traits back to the various vocabulary from the article.
