Social Studies Individual, Family and Society Government The relationship between citizens and government

General Objective: To increase students awareness of the responsibilities/duties of citizens as well as the purpose of the constitution. Specific Objectives: Grade 10 students will: 1. Knowledge a. After reading the handout, define the terms citizen, constitution, democratic and authoritarian governments. b. After reading page 126 of the text Modules in Social Studies, examine the rights of citizens.

2. Skills a.

After reading page 126 of the text Modules in Social Studies, create a comic strip illustrating the violation of the rights of citizens.

3. Affective a. Demonstrate a willingness to participate in class activities

Introductory Activity Teacher will paste posters on the board containing different statements pertaining to the rights of citizens. Students will be asked to give their views on whether or not the statements are right or wrong and why they think so. Students will be expected to indicate that each statement goes against the law of the country. Step 1 Teacher will write the following words on the board: citizen, constitution, authoritarian and democratic. Teacher will then ask students to brainstorm and provide their own definitions of these terms. Best answers will be written on the board. Teacher will then distribute handouts containing definitions. Each will be read and discussed. Students will be asked: What is the difference between democratic and authoritarian government? Which government is more concerned with human rights? Give reasons.

Teacher will then lead a discussion on the importance of the constitution. Step 2 Students will read on the rights of the citizen on page 134 of the text modules in Social Studies. Teacher will call on individual students to: Provide their own interpretation of a right Give an example of how each right can be violated Students will then copy this information into their notebooks. Step 3 Students will be placed into pairs and will be asked draw a picture illustrating the violation of the rights of citizens. Teacher will call on groups to present their work to the class. Assessment Students will be asked to (orally): Explain why the constitution is necessary Say why it is important for citizens to know their rights. . Content Constitution A set of fundamental principles according to which a country is governed and which includes laws and guidelines that ensure that the constitution is upheld.

Democratic government In a democracy, citizens are allowed to put themselves forward as representatives. Citizens rights are recognized and citizens can criticize and challenge the government. Authoritarian Government An authoritarian government is one in which decisions are made by an individual person or by a small group within the government. Citizens rights are not acknowledged or respected and they do not participate in government decision making.
