A Guide for Incoming Erasmus Students 2012/13

EUROP An Introduction

Cardiff School of European Languages, Translation and Politics (EUROP) has a number of agreements with partner universities abroad for the exchange of students on their year abroad. The information below is for incoming Erasmus students visiting Cardiff. EUROP consists of six different subject areas for undergraduate study: French, German, Hispanic Studies (Catalan and Spanish), Italian, Translation and Politics and offers a wide range of courses, both in arts and social sciences. We provide language modules as well as a variety of courses on culture, history, literature, politics, feminism, present-day society, commercial language, cinema etc. Politics has a very strong European orientation and is focused on the interaction of political theory, institutions and behaviour. BA Honours courses in language allow Cardiff students to study either one or two languages in depth, as well as to become familiar with the civilisation of those countries whose language they study not just the literature but the politics, history, society and wider culture also. All degree programmes have a modular structure with the academic year divided into two twelve week semesters. Each semester is followed by a period of examinations and/or assessments. You will need to enrol for 120 credits if visiting for the whole year, with at least 80 of these credits taken within the School. Student visiting for one semester are required to enrol for 60 credits, with at least 40 of these credits taken within the School. We look forward to welcoming you to the School.

Communication and Facilities

Please read and familiarise yourself with these items -- they will assist you in your everyday activities at EUROP. Cardiff School of European Languages, Translation and Politics is situated at 65-68 Park Place. Locations and Maps can be found at http://www.cf.ac.uk/locations/index.html. Your Mail/Student Pigeonholes Any mail/post from staff to students (also from the library) will be alphabetically sorted by the students surname and placed in the pigeon holes located next to the Reception window in the foyer (65-68 Park Place). Please check regularly for new post/information. Erasmus Post Box Erasmus students must post any documents (for signing by EUROP) in the Erasmus post box located in the EUROP foyer. It is a large wooden box, clearly marked for this purpose. Post is collected daily and documents are returned within 2 3 days to the relevant student pigeon hole. Cardiff University Email Account It is important that you access your Cardiff University email account regularly. We will often contact you by email only and you could miss very important emails from the School and from the Registry if you do not check your Cardiff emails. You can access your account away from the campus by visiting the MWE Cardiff Portal. You will need to enter your Cardiff username and password. IT/Computer Suites There are 2 IT suites available to students in EUROP between 8.30am and 5pm during term time. These are rooms 1.22 and 2.24. The members of staff responsible for these areas are Mr. Mark Cooper and Mrs. Iris Winney in room 0.11. You can contact them via email at EUROP-IT@Cardiff.ac.uk. The University also has a number of 24-hour-access IT suites open throughout the year. More information on these can be found at http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/insrv/it/itrooms/index.html The Administrative Staff The administrative staff are located in rooms 0.02 and 0.03 at 65-68 Park Place. Office hours for students are between 10am and 3:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Important Information about Enrolment

Welcome Event All Erasmus / Socrates students are required to attend the Schools Welcome Event where you will meet staff from the School and find out what you need to do once youve arrived in Cardiff. The meeting is on Monday 24 September 2012, in room 1.05 in the Stanley Paris Lecture Theatre, room 1.05 Tower Building (map ref: 30). Locations and maps can be found at http://www.cf.ac.uk/locations/index.html School Enrolment Drop-In Sessions Following the Welcome Event, our IT room (1.22) will be available to Erasmus students from 11am and 4.30pm on Monday 24 September 2012 to complete your online enrolment. Online Enrolment: Students must enrol for a total of 120 credits if studying for the whole academic year. At least 80 credits must be within EUROP (modules beginning 'EU'). Students may take a maximum of 40 credits outside EUROP. Studying in other Schools at Cardiff University is not compulsory. If you are studying with us for one semester you must enrol for a total of 60 credits. 40 credits must be taken from EUROP modules (modules beginning 'EU'). You may take a maximum of 20 credits in other Schools but studying in other schools is not compulsory. The following is a list of modules available to students studying in EUROP:
