Sluice / Slide Gate / Penstock

Sluice / Slide gates are used to control the ow or level of a liquid and consists of a sliding door controlled by a mechanically operated stem, which moves over an aperture in a frame, which in turn is secured onto a structure. Sluice / Slide gate is more descriptive of the product, and this term is used widely in specications outside the UK. The word penstock originates from the days of water mills when it was not uncommon for a pond (stored or penned up water), which was used to feed the water wheel or mill race to be referred to as the pen. The timber stop logs used to control the ow onto the water wheel was called the stock. Later, as the need to accurately control the velocity of the water wheel became more critical, a single sliding gate operated by a lifting mechanism replaced the stop logs with their individual sections. During the 17th century, the words pen and stock became combined into a single word - PENSTOCK.

An Introduction to Flow Control
Ham Baker can offer the most comprehensive range of ow control equipment in the world. The traditional cast iron ranges have been the mainstay of the industry and the development of Ham Baker has created several standard ranges which cover a wide variety of types, sizes and operating conditions. However the wealth of experience gives Ham Baker the ability to design and manufacture gates for any duty or size. Ham Baker in step with its continuous programme of research and development has developed a range of stainless steel fabricated gates using the latest technology. Low friction guide blocks are positioned on the frame sides to effect a clearance between the door and the resilient sealing faces attached to the frame upon immediate raising of the door, thus preventing seal drag and minimising wear. With this comprehensive range of ow control products Ham Baker can help our customers solve all their ow control needs. Because of this extensive range we are not limited to specic duty ranges or technologies but can offer our customers not only a technically suitable solution but also the most cost effective solution. Gates and other ow control products manufactured by Ham Baker can be found operating in almost every country in the world, thus endorsing the statement that Ham Baker is one of the leading gate manufacturers in the world. to complex control systems for electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic actuation. The range of gates together with its associated operating equipment will cater for the most demanding specication and application. This section is intended to assist users in the selection of the most suitable products to meet requirements. Selection Considerations When setting out to determine the unit most suited to a particular requirement, the following considerations have to be made: 1. Size of gate required. 2. In which direction is the ow of the uid to be controlled; will it force the door on to or off its sealing face? 3. What is the differential head in meters across the gate in each direction under: (a) Static conditions. (b) Opening and closing conditions. 4. Wall, channel, pipe or thimble mounting. 5. Method of operation. 6. It is now necessary to make a selection given: (a) Basic types available. (b) Direction of ow and invert sealing arrangement. (c) Mounting position. (d) Fixing details. (e) Method of operation. (f) Accessories. Having selected the basic frame type, it is then necessary to specify one of the following alternatives:A. Is the gate to take - on-seating head? - off-seating head? - on and off-seating head? On-seating head - Pressure forcing the door onto the frame. Off-seating head - Pressure forcing the door away from the frame. Modulating gates for ow control purposes, where gates may be frequently repositioned and utilise only a proportion of the full stroke, require special consideration and may necessitate: larger than standard stems slow operating speeds continuously rated motors on actuators special heat absorbing drive sleeves B. Is the gate to have - Chased/Rebated invert? - Flush invert?
5

SELECTION
Introduction
The primary application of gates is the ow control and isolation of uids associated with water, waste water, sewage treatment plants, power generation, irrigation schemes and process plants. The modern gate is designed to cater for a wide variety of duties from low seating to high off-seating heads in sizes from 150mm to 5000mm square. Selection of the correct gate to suit the duty is important to satisfy the design criteria and provide the most cost effective solution. Operation of the gate is governed generally by factors outside the control of the gate manufacturer. However, the range of available operating equipment is extensive: from simple direct operation by handwheel

FLOW CONTROL

Flush Inverts
These are available with a resilient sealing strip to produce a laminar ow, improved hydraulics, efciency and a non-fouling invert.

Channel Mounting
Any of Ham Baker standard gate units can be mounted in a channel. Channel mounted gates are xed into preformed rebates in the sides and inverts of channels by means of a sand/cement non shrink grout, to effect a seal between the rebate and the gate frame. Wall mounted Sealing gates can be installed with Grout foundation bolts and grout, however, the rebate will need to be cast large enough to facilitate normal wall mounting procedures and wedge adjustment. Off-Seating Head

Wall Thimbles
Wall Thimbles are not needed with our design. When high off-sealing pressure is specied, careful consideration must be given to the method of xing the gate to the structure. From our vast experience, we believe that a full survey of the situation is needed. Many high strength anchoring systems are available and should be considered before any thimble is specied. Thimbles are expensive, difcult to install and are a proprietary item supplied by the gate manufacturer. The following advantages are claimed for the use of thimbles: 1. Civil construction can proceed prior to delivery of the gate. This is also true for Ham Baker wall mounted gates. Extra costs will be incurred for the thimble and approx 50% extra for installation. 2. Considerable keying/anchor area within the concrete structure. The attachment of the gate frame to the thimble is achieved by drilling and taping the cast iron base material, and inserting stainless steel studs. Over time corrosion occurs, now the unseating load is transferred to these corroded taped holes. 3. Ease of gate installation and removal for re-sitting or cleaning etc. Most contractors add 50% more for installing a gate with a thimble so it is not that easy! When requested wall thimbles can be supplied in either E or F section, suitable for circular or rectangular openings. When pipe work connections are needed, the pipe supply company should supply the appropriate connection for sealing etc.

FIXINGS METHODS
Wall Mounting
Wall mounted gates are xed to vertical end walls of channels, chambers or similar structures by means of foundation bolts utilising a sand/cement Sealing non shrink grout to effect Grout a seal between the wall and gate frame. Anchor bolts can be supplied as an expanding type (as shown opposite), cast-in Concrete type or epoxy type. Structure

FLOW CONTROL

COUPLINGS
There are several methods of connecting sections of stem together. The type selected will depend upon the application and the duty of the gate. The most commonly used couplings are illustrated below. TYPICAL COUPLINGS

Stem Adaptor
Manufactured in cast iron, for jointing straight lengths of stem in line. For use with torsional loads only (non-rising stem applications).

Stem adaptor

Muff Couplings
Manufactured in the same material as the stem for joining straight lengths of stem in-line. For use with both axial and torsional loads (rising and non-rising stem applications). Two types of coupling are available:1. Plain muff coupling. 2. Screwed muff coupling. The use of a particular type of coupling will depend upon the operating duty and/or the specication.

Universal joint

Plain

Screwed

Muff Couplings TYPICAL STEM GUIDES

Universal Joint
Manufactured in mild steel or stainless steel, for joining two straight lengths of stem in different planes. For transmission of torsional loads only (non-rising stem applications). Universal joints are supplied in pairs for a maximum working angle of 35. Protective neoprene gaiters can be supplied for the retention of lubricants in the joints.

ACCESSORIES
Stem Guides
In some cases unsupported lengths of stem are subjected to buckling under compression or from lateral thrust by debris or solids. Stem guides are, therefore, necessary as a means of providing intermediate support. Bolt-on type adjustable guides are manufactured in cast iron, normally plain unmachined, but if required they can be bronze lined. When considering the centres or vertical spacing of the guide, the l/r (length/radius of gyration of the stem) should not normally exceed 200.

Used on larger sizes of sluice / slide gates for rising and non-rising stem applications.

Used on smaller sizes of sluice / slide gates for rising and non-rising stem applications.

Methods of Operation
The method of operation will depend on several factors which are outside the control of the gate manufacturer, but the range of operating gear available is extensive and can be provided to meet customer requirements. (See page 26) The following types of weir gates are manufactured: Type A weir gates of the screw-down variety with rising or non-rising stems, the stem operates through a nut which is either housed in the door for the non-rising types or housed in handwheel, gearbox or actuator for the rising types. Type B Screw-down weir gates with unobstructed openings, the rising stem is attached to a horizontal lifting beam above the opening and operates the door by lifting rods tted to each side of the door. For accurate measurement of ow, Type B weir gates are recommended because the stem does not obstruct the ow over the weir. Indicators with metric or imperial graduations can be tted for the application.

Stem Lift Nuts

The stem nuts are phosphor bronze stainless steel. For non-rising stems, the nut is housed in a stainless steel bracket secured to top of the gate door. For rising stems, the nut is housed in the operator and is bronze.

WEIR (Downward Opening)

Composite2 weir gates are constructed as described for the wall mounted type other than the stem is secured to the lower edge of the gate door via a stainless steel bracket, thus permitting maximum inhibited ow over the upper weir edge of the door. Flush invert does not apply for weir gates, however top seals can be tted. The sealing arrangements for the Composite2 gates combine the use of resilient and low friction synthetic materials which ensures a high degree of sealing with easy movement.

Fixing Bolts
Are supplied in stainless steel grade 316.

Pressure Pads
Adjustable pressure pads are tted as standard and pre-set at the works to provide maximum degree of water tightness.

SIZES
BS7775 Specication for Penstocks provides useful information regarding sizes for gates. Gates are suitable for three shapes of aperture Square Rectangular Circular Standard Rectangular Gates have an aspect ratio (width divided by depth) between 0.5 and 2. Gates outside this range can be considered but will be special designs.

2. Discharge through an orice

This type of ow occurs where a gate controls ow into or out of a tank or other large container. If the gate is fully submerged, the ow through an open or partially open gate and its associated civil engineering structure opening will be given by q = CA (2gH)

Where

q is the discharge rate - cubic meters per second C is a discharge coefcient generally taken to be 0.7 A is the aperture area - square meters The aperture area is the gate opening if the gate is fully open. If the gate is not fully open, the aperture area will be reduced. H is the differential head at the centre of the opening - meters The differential head is the difference between the upstream and down stream water levels. g is the acceleration due to gravity - 9.81 m/s2 For example a gate 1.5 meters wide by 2 meters deep with a 6 meter differential head at the centre of the door will discharge 22.8 cubic meters per second.

Cast Iron Circular gates below 600mm to 1000mm in diameter, depending on type, have a circular sealing face. For all other circular gates the sealing face is as a square gate.

FLOW CHARACTERISTICS
1. General
Gates are installed in civil engineering structures. When a gate is fully open, the head loss attributable to the gate alone is generally quite small compared to the losses due to the civil engineering structure. An exception to this is a channel mounted gate where the top water level is above the top of the door opening.
22

TECHNICAL DETAILS

A graph of a range of discharges for different gate apertures and differential heads is shown below.

4. Weir Gates
Weir Gates behave in their discharge capability as a rectangular weir with partial end contractions, the extent of the end contraction being inuenced by the civil engineering design in the locality of the weir. An approximation to the discharge is given by Q = 1.73 WH1.5

Fig. 1 - Graph of Discharge against Head

Where

Q is the discharge rate - cubic meters per second W is the width of the weir opening - meters H is the head at the weir crest - meters For example a weir 2 meters wide having a water depth of 200mm (0.2m) at the crest will discharge 0.31 cubic meters per second. If the weir is used as a ow measuring or control device reference should be made to BS 3680-4A:1981 Methods of measurement of liquid ow in open channels. Weirs and umes. Methods using thin plate weirs for channel design and relative water levels.

LEAKAGE
Ham Baker gates will be virtually drop-tight at their working pressure if installation has been carried out correctly. Leakage rates are inuenced by The head The seating direction, on or off The correct installation of the gate Time

3. Channel mounted gates

If a channel mounted gate is fully open and the top of the gate opening is above the water level in the channel, then the head loss results from disturbed ow in the rebates in the channel walls in which the gate frame is mounted. These losses can generally be disregarded provided that the channel is not obstructed. Channel mounted gates usually have ush inverts. When a gate is in a channel and is partially closed, or the water level is above the top of the door opening, the calculations are complex. Reference should be made to a suitable publication on civil engineering hydraulics.

An on-seating gate will leak less with increasing head. An off-seating gate will leak more with an increasing head. Gates subject to an on-seating head seal more tightly than those subject to an off-seating head. If the gate is installed so that the frame is twisted, then the leakage rate will increase. Gates should be installed by experienced contractors and mounted on grout. Over the course of time after closure of the gate, the leakage rate will decrease as leakage paths are blocked by small pieces of debris in the water. From the above it is clear that if leakage is required to be minimised, then the gate should be congured so that it is on-seating.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Allowable Leakage Rates

Leakage rates are dened by the amount of water which leaks through a 1 meter length of seal in 1 minute. BS 7775:1995 leakage rates apply to gates subject to a head of 6 meters or less and widths of 2 meters or less. Gates with metal seals (Cast Iron Gates) The allowable leakage rates listed are derived from BS 7775 Specication for Gates and AWWA C56007 AWWA Standard for Cast Iron Sluice Gates as appropriate, shown in (gpm/ft) On-seating head Any head Allowable leakage rate 1.25 litres/min/m (0.1gpm/ft)

the test. Tests shall be carried out over a period of 30 minutes.

FOUNDATION LOADS AND OPERATING FORCES

Precise foundation loads can be given by Ham Baker once a gate has been specied. As a guide to the foundation loads to be expected, the following formulae can be used. A gate exerts two types of load on the civil engineering structure. Hydrostatic Operating

Off-seating head Allowable leakage rate Up to 6 meters 2.5 litres/min/m (0.2gpm/ft) Up to 9 meters 3.0 litres/min/m Up to 12 meters 3.75 litres/min/m Up to 15 meters 4.5 litres/min/m Leakage rates for off-seating heads greater than 15 meters will be advised on request. Gates with resilient rubber or plastic seals On-seating head Up to 5 meters Off-seating head Up to 4 meters Allowable leakage rate 0.5 litres/min/m (0.1gpm/ft) Allowable leakage rate 0.5 litres/min/m (0.1gpm/ft)

Note on heads.
Heads for gates are specied to the invert in BS 7775. These heads can be used conservatively for these calculations. More accurately, the head at the centre of the door should be used, this is the head at the invert less half the door depth.

1. Hydrostatic Force.
The hydrostatic load F is the force of the water against the gate door, which will be transferred to the civil engineering structure by the gate frame. This force acts horizontally. The force F is given by (approximately) F=10HA where F is in units of kN H is the maximum differential head at the centre of the door - meters. This should be the worst case which could occur. A is the door area in square meters For example a 1.5 meter square door with a head at the centre of the door of 6 meters will experience a hydrostatic force of F= 10 x 6 x 1.52 that is F=135 kN

For example, a 1500mm wide by 2000mm deep cast iron gate subject to an off-seating head of 9 meters would have a seal periphery of 2(1.5+2) = 7m and allowable leakage rate of 3.0 litres/min/m. Therefore maximum allowable leakage rate = 7 x 3 = 21 litres/min.

On-site Leakage Test According to BS 7775 & AWWA C560, 561 & 563
Before a site leakage test is undertaken the installer shall ensure that the gate and its associated operating equipment have been correctly installed and xed in position. Gates and associated operating equipment shall be installed strictly in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations. Final adjustments to the gate shall be made and all moving parts shall be operated through one complete open and shut cycle to conrm proper operation before the leakage test commences. Measurement of the liquid loss through the seals shall be carried out in such a way that any leaks from between the gate frame and the structure shall not affect the result of
24

2. Operating Force
This is the force required to open and close the gate door. The civil engineering structure will experience this load where the gate operating device is connected to the civil engineering structure and the gate frame is connected to the civil engineering structure. However the civil engineering structure will not experience this force if the gate operating device is connected directly to the gate or the thrust reaction is taken at the top of the gate frame.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

The normal operating force of the gate P can be taken as rst approximation as P= 0.5F kN where F is dened above

an auxiliary method of operation, the handwheel effort is limited to 250N if this is reasonable. Although the handwheel effort can be limited to 250N in most cases, this increases the complexity of the gate drive. For larger gates (above about 2000mm square) manual operation of the actuator for a full stroke of the door is not practicable due to the excessive number of turns required. If the gate must be operable in the case of electrical failure, provision can be made for an auxiliary power device such as a mobile internal combustion engine power pack.

This force acts vertically and can be up or down. For example the 1.5 meter square door with a head at the centre of the door of 6 meters considered above will have an operating force P= 0.5 x 135 = 67.5kN In addition to the normal operating condition, a fault condition Pf (e.g. actuator limit switch failure, or excessive force applied to the operating hand wheel) should be considered. Pf = 2F kN where F is dened above

The operator generates a torque, but the forces associated with this can be neglected for a rst approximation. The weight of the gate is usually secondary to the operating force, except for low head applications.

STEM DIAMETER
This is determined by many factors, included in these are The stem should not fail due to yield or buckling during normal operation. The stem should not fail due to yielding under the worst fault condition. The slenderness ratio of the stem should be less than 250 or 200 if specied. The slenderness ratio is the length of a stem section between guides divided by a quarter of the stem diameter. The stem should be self-sustaining (that is the weight of the gate door should not back-drive the stem through its power screw.

HANDWHEEL AND TEE KEY EFFORT

The efforts considered below are for normal operation of the gate against the specied heads. For a manually operated gate the handwheel effort is limited to 250 N (55 lbf) as a single pull on the rim unless otherwise specied. A Tee Key is usually 500mm across the handle and has a push/pull effort limited to 125N thus generating a torque of 62.5 Nm.
