Good evening to one and all.

I am here to present my views about the importance of learning English language which is taught to us right from our birth. A language is a systematic means of communication by the use of sounds or conventional symbols. It is the code we all use to express ourselves and communicate to others. Any means of communicating ideas, specifically, human speech, the expression of ideas by the voice and sounds articulated by the organs of the throat and mouth is a language. It is generally supposed that the study of English was imposed upon Indians by Lord Macaulay with the sole purpose of serving the end of the British Administration in India. The historical circumstances of India have given the Indians an easy access to mastering English language. Many Indians have become so skilled in English language and have won many international awards for creative and comparative literatures during the last few years. Sometime ago, an Indian author, Arundhati Roy, won the prestigious booker prize for her book The God of Small Things. Her book sold lakhs of copies all over the globe. A famous Indian movie maker Shekhar Kapoors film Elizabeth has got several nominations for Oscar Awards. We can make also use English to promote our worldview and spiritual heritage throughout the globe. Swami Vivekananda established the greatness of Indian view of religion at the world conference of religions in Chicago in 1893. He addressed the gathering in impressive English. English is not just taught at home, at schools and colleges but even at professional colleges and at work places too. In present competitive market to survive we have to develop our communication skills. English is one of the most important languages in the world. English has a special status in India. Apart from having a place in the public institutions of the country, in parliament, the law courts, broadcasting, the press, and the educational system, English has spread in our daily life. India ranks third in the world after USA and the UK to use English as spoken language. After Hindi English is the most commonly spoken language in India. English is also the first and foremost criteria whether you are applying for a job or you are seeking admission in a reputed college/university/institution. However, candidates with the relevant qualification without having proper knowledge of English language are being rejected. Learning English is not that difficult if you have taken admission in the right institution. This English language is a mode of communication and most of the nations of the world use English Language as an official language. Believe me, it is fun learning and it can be learned easily. One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way. Frank Smith

"The English language is nobody's special property. It is the property of the imagination: it is the property of the language itself." Derek Walcott
