About NR Mechanical Workshop Amritsar About Northern Railway Mechanical Workshop Amritsar Amritsar workshop was set up by the

Punjab Government in 1901 to meet the maintenance requirements of the Head Works Machinery of Punjab Public Works Department (Irrigation Branch). In 1942, the Workshop was handed over to the Defence Department and named as the Ordnance Factory, Amritsar. In 1947, this workshop was once again handed over to the Punjab Government for manufacturing the requirements of the Bhakra - Nangal project. It was taken over by the Railways on 1st June 1956. The workshop started off as a locomotive workshop for undertaking the POH of steam locomotives. Initially, the workshop undertook POH of steam locos of various types -SPS, XT, EM, SGC, and PTC. (BG) etc. The POH of XA-I & X-B class of locos was started in 1961. POH of ZE & ZF narrow gauge steam locos was started in 1964 & subsequently POH of IC, KC and ZF-I class of locos was transferred to Amritsar shop from Kalka Workshop. In 1961-62, this Workshop started manufacture of BOX wagons under the Rolling Stock Programme. The capacity of the shops increased rapidly from 25 FWUs in 1961-62 to the present level of around 750 FWUs. Various types of wagons viz. BCX, BRHT, BCN, BVZC, BWL, BMKM/BOM (for Defence Department), TPGLR (IOC), BOXN, and BVZIs have been manufactured in these shops. In 1986, after the closure of the steam loco POH, the POH of WDS4 loco and POH of Steam Break down Cranes were taken in hand. In July 1998, this Workshop started manufacturing ICF bogie frames for 13 Ton All Coil Bogies and other sub-assemblies such as Headstocks etc. for Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala. In 2004, the POH of Self Propelled ART/ARME was started. In 2006, Manufacture of Side Panels of SLR Coaches for RCF was started. In 2007 Manufacture of ICF Bogie frame for Crash Worthy Coaches was started. In 2009 Manufacture of Air Suspension Bogie for EMUs and manufacture of BOX N HL stainless steel wagons under RSP was started. Geographical Total area : 162000 Sq.Mtrs. Covered area : 55687 Sq. Mtrs. PRESENT ACTIVITIES Presently, the workshop is mainly functioning as manufacturing shop. Apart from the manufacture of the High Speed BOXN HL wagons & BVZI wagon, the shop has manufactured a completely new design of wagon for carrying steel coils. i) The other major activity is the manufacture of ICF bogie frames, side walls & headstocks for passenger coaches being manufactured at Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala. ii) In addition, the shop is also undertaking the following activities: Assembly/Repair of Wheel & Axles for various types of locomotives, coaches and wagons of Indian Railway. Repair of Equalising Beams. Manufacture of various types of C&W and diesel components. Manufacture of 13 Ton ICF assembled bogie. Manufacture of Air Suspension Bogie foe EMU.

Fixture for reclamation of Traction Motor magnet frame of DEMU coaches The reclamation of magnet frames for LDH diesel shed was increased to 6/month. In addition, a fixture was developed & the work of reclamation of pinion end & commutator end sides bores of magnet frames of DEMU was successfully started.

Improvement in quality of bogie frames A number of measures were introduced for improving the quality of bogie frames: Short term courses were organized for welding staff & supervisors for improving their skills. Fixtures developed for enabling down hand welding of bogie components like head stock with end pieces etc. Complete switch over to MIG welding and welding on sub-merged arc. Improving the quality of joint preparation by proper edge preparation.

Fixture for fitment of axle guide arrangement A fixture has been developed for fitment of Axle Guide arrangement on Bogie Frames successfully. In addition to the bogie frames required for BVZI production, now all the bogie frames to RCF are being supplied fitted with axle guides.

Future Plans Achieve excellence in manufacturing of wagons & Coach & wagon sub-assembly manufacture by using latest technology and upgrading the skills. To start manufacture of Side Panels of GS/GSCN/SLR coaches for RCF. To implement PMIS in the workshop. To start manufacture Air Suspension Bogie. Creating facilities for manufacture of FIAT bogie. Upgrading Canteen facilities. Upgrading Drawing/Design Office.

Assistance seeks from Head Quarter This workshop is more than 100 yrs. Old and civil engineering infrastructure has not been upgraded for long. Major problems in existing infrastructure are: Roofs are leaky due to broken roof sheets and gutters. Roads are broken resulting in problems in material movement. Water pipe line is corroded. Buildings having arch roof are unsafe and needs replacement. One time input of funds is required for above marks. Amritsar workshop is more than 100 years old and has still got World War II vintage machines. Even the civil and electrical infrastructure of this shop is very old. This workshop has been known for its hard working & innovative workers who have developed and produced new wagons and bogies for Indian Railways whenever demanded. Now this workshop has started developing cramps in its infrastructure and needs a cohesive and planned modernization input. A proposal for modernization of workshop was

sent under PWP 2011-12 but was not sanctioned. Proposal is being sent again under PWP 2012-13 and needs sanction. Steel yard in the workshop is not having any material handling facility in spite of it handling more than 500 MT of steel. It has resulted in haphazard stocking of material and poor stocking of material and poor stocking. A work in VolII for Provision of Gantry net work in steel year(consisting of 02 parallel bays Total length 250 +250=500 Mtrs.) with EOT cranes.)Capacity 35 Ton, Qty. 02 Nos.) Along with Hardonite flooring in total area 11500 Mtrs. with provision of Yard offices. RPF post etc., has been proposed which will improve the efficiency of material handling. Presently Civil Engg. Maintenance is being looked after by Firozpur division through ADEN posted at Amritsar. The present Civil Engg. Organization is already having busy schedule and priority towards maintenance of divisional assets. Workshop gets a very low priority for funds allocation as well as execution of works. A civil Engg. Organization working under AEN/XEN should be placed Administrative control of CWM. A proposal laying down procedure for allotment of funds, processing tenders by workshop and nominating workshop finance as associate finance has been moved at Hqrs. Office. Filling of Vacancies of Tech Gr. III Crane jamadars Vacancies of supervisors and staff, Indents on RRB/JAT to be expedited. There will be 426 anticipated Vacancies up to 2016 due to retirement. Monthly ceiling for stock/non stock items to be enhanced to 12 lacs from 7.5 lacs at par with JUDW, SSB & AMV complex. Officers club and staff institute at Amritsar are catering to the officers and staff posted at Amritsar. Both these organization have not got any input for long. A Gym and a Badminton hall are required to improve the facilities.
