Laughter Really Is

At her comfortable home on the In-
tracoastal Waterway on the Isle of Palms,
nurse-writer-actress and breast cancer
survivor Gene Glave laughs...a lot! Her
laugh is birdlike, but not like the trill of a
sparrow or a canary’s melodic call. More
like the kookburra’s raucous guffaw. All
that hilarity issuing forth from the petite,
curly-headed health care professional is
all the more astonishing when placed in
juxtaposition to the serious medical treat-
ment she has endured for the past three
years.
In January, 2006, Gene was diag-
nosed with breast cancer. Bad enough,
but hers was a rare form of the disease,
estrogen receptor negative metaplastic
spindle cell adenocarcinoma, which af-
fects less than one percent of breast can-
cer victims.
As the manager of Pediatric Servic-
es for Roper St. Francis Healthcare, she
knew right away what she was in for. She
had administered chemotherapy many
times to the youngest cancer patients,
keeping the ones who didn’t make it in
her heart and exulting over the ones who
treatment improved and even cured. She
faced a mastectomy plus chemotherapy
with adriamycin, a powerful drug nick-
named the “red devil”
for its red color and
its generally ghastly
side effects, plus cy-
toxan and taxol.

New Index Helps Determine Future Of Retirement

(NAPS)—As the median age of Ameri-
cans rises and more baby boomers prepare
for important decisions—like when to take
Social Security and when to exit the work-
place—a new study called the Sun Life
Financial Unretirement Index is finding
that many of the traditional attitudes about
retirement no longer apply.
For example, almost half (48%) of the
American workforce believes it will still
be working at age 67—and four of the
five top reasons given were not financial
in nature. Instead, the most cited reason
for continuing to work (83%) was “to stay
mentally engaged.”
The Sun Life Financial Unretirement
Index is a first-of-its-kind measure to track
the changing attitudes and expectations
American workers have regarding retire-
ment. The Index gauges how economic,
financial and societal forces are impact-
ing working Americans’ perceptions of
their ability to retire, and as these factors
and other market forces change, whether
workers believe they will have a “tradi-
tional” retirement or will enter the ranks
of the “unretired.” Unretirement is defined
as working at least 20 hours per week after
the age when one is eligible to receive full
Social Security benefits.
“As our workforce evolves and at-
titudes are impacted by economic condi-
tions and world events, the nature of re-
tirement in America evolves as well,” said
Bob Salipante, president, Sun Life Finan-
cial U.S. “Traditional views on retirement
are quickly evolving and more Americans
are choosing to be unretired.”
Nearly 40% of workers surveyed with
household assets of more than $500K
still plan to work at least part time, while
overall, more than 77% of those planning
to work beyond age 67 will do so to earn
enough money to live well.
The Index also examined a broad
array of factors including economics,
health care, personal finance and govern-
ment benefits and their potential impact
on Americans’ plans for retirement.
It found that only 46% of those surveyed
are “very confident” that they will have
enough money to take care of basic living
expenses at the traditional retirement age
of 67. Only 28% are “very confident” that
they will be able to take care of medical
expenses and 26% are “not at all confi-
dent” that they will be able to do so.

phe in his surname. He will
begin speaking with the
same brogue made famous
by Barry Fitzgerald in “Go-
ing My Way” and will fly
to New York City on March
17th to serve as Grand Mar-
shall O’Bama in the annual
St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

it’s empowering to be able
to lighten up and just write
about what interesting things
you’ve seen and what wild
ideas have crossed your

all you have to say is “Hey,
that was just my opinion!”

treatment sickened her. She also
felt that removing any potential
carcinogens from her life would
be a positive step, as her type of
cancer does not allow for tamoxi-
fen follow-up to surgery and che-
motherapy. More importantly,
she began writing an on-line
journal – a blog – chronicling her
feelings and observations about
her condition and its treatment.
One of the readers of that
blog was her friend Keely En-
right, the managing director of
the Village Playhouse. Enright
felt that Gene’s humorous and
insightful journal needed to be
available to a larger audience.
She encouraged Glave to turn her
blog into a one-woman show, but
Gene resisted. She had a decent
background in performing, from
children’s theater in Virginia to
the Pluff Mud Players East of the
Cooper and the Dock Street The-
ater.
But, this would be a solo
flight for her, and audiences
might well not appreciate the hu-
mor in battling a deadly disease.
Ultimately, Gene gave in to
Enright’s entreaties and her one-
woman show, “Mammologues”
premiered as a part of Piccolo
Spoleto in 2007.
The response was over-
whelmingly positive although

2 lb lean stewing beef
3 tablespoons oil

When I first heard there was
a film called Taken, I thought
it was about the Obama Stimu-
Pork bill; as in, “Aw crap!
We’ve all been TAKEN!” But
unlike the Pelosi Pork Pack,
this story is easy to follow and
all it will cost you is 8 bucks
and 90 minutes. In the first 10
minutes of Taken, the story is
set. Two ditsy, trampy teens are
kidnapped in France by greasy
brutes. Okay I get it – saw it
coming a mile away. From that
point on, Neeson opens up a can
of whoop on virtually anyone
who stands in front of him. This
is what the movie trailer shows,
and Taken doesn’t veer from that
one bit. Whatcha see is whatcha
get. No tricks, no plot twists, no
gimmicks. Just straight-ahead
ticked-off butt-kickin’. In fact,
most of the other characters in
Speeder

a car puttering along the highway
at only 22 m.p.h. He turned on his
lights and pulled the car over. Ap-
proaching the vehicle, he noticed
that it contained five old ladies,
two in the front seat and three in
the back, and that all the old la-
dies were wide-eyed and white as
ghosts. The driver, obviously con-
fused, said, “Officer, I don’t un-
derstand. I was going exactly the
speed limit. What’s the problem?”
“Ma’am,” the officer replied,
“You weren’t speeding, but you
should know that driving slower
than the speed limit can also be a
danger to other drivers.”
“Slower than the speed limit?
I’m following the posted speed ex-
actly!”
The officer, trying to contain a
chuckle, explained “22” was the
route number, not the speed limit.
Embarrassed, the woman smiled
and thanked him for pointing out
her error. Before letting her go,
however, the officer asked, “Is
everyone in the car okay? Those
women seem awfully shaken, and
they haven’t made a peep this
whole time”
“Oh, they’ll be all right in a
minute, officer. We just got off
Route 119.”

movie could easily be re-

lot less political correctness in
it than most Hollyweird films
in the last three years, the very
premise of Taken is PC. Al-
though it is a fact that young
women, particularly white Cau-
casians, are kidnapped for sex
slavery around the world and
Albanians truly are involved in
this big time, France is not the
prime location for this dirty
deed. Of the top 10 places list-
ed as “Most Likely to Be Kid-
napped In,” only one – Chech-
nya – is anywhere near Europe.
They are, in order: Haiti, Iraq,
Afghanistan, Chechnya, Ni-
geria, Philippines, Venezuela,
Columbia, Brazil and Mexico.
Bet you won’t see a Hollyweird
movie about that.

ton.
“Yes,” she told me, “I realize
that’s a mouthful but what can I
say? My mother, bless her heart,
was wild about alliterations. She
had no idea what she put me
through.”
I could hardly let that one
get by me, so I asked, “What do
you mean, Lila? What did she
put you through?”
“Are you serious? I was
called Little Lila Littleton when
I was a child, and I hated it. It
was just too big a temptation
for the other kids to resist. I’m a
big girl today, so I forgive them
here and now and take back all
the evil curses I put on them
through the years.”
