About
Ash Resources is South Africas leading manufacturer and supplier of y ash products.
Since 1979 the companys pioneering development work has turned a waste product of Eskoms pulverised coal-red power stations into an environmentally-friendly and sustainable building material. Our ongoing research programmes, in partnership with local and international technical institutions, are continually providing y ash product solutions, helping to create more effective cement formulations and high performance concrete mix designs for the construction industry both locally and abroad.
Having access to these unrivalled technical resources and best practices is one of Ash Resources strengths, ensuring world-class quality products and leading edge technology.
At present, Ash Resources comprises four strategically located y ash processing plants sited next to Eskom coal-red power stations; our head ofce in Randburg, South Africa and a Middle East marketing ofce in Dubai. The Company has over 230 staff members employed from the local communities in which we operate. 2009 | ASH RESOURCES | PA G E 3
Environmental
Benefits
Offering the construction industry sustainable options
One of the unique features of our products is their sustainability providing a viable alternative to nonrenewable primary aggregates. Ash Resources aims to maintain its leading position as South Africas preferred supplier of premium y ash products and the major environmental benets they offer the Construction Industry. These environmentally-friendly attributes of y ash products are recognised worldwide. Each ton of y ash used in cementitious products saves approximately one ton of CO2 emissions (the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide). In the last decade, it is estimated that the use of Ash Resources y ash products by the South African cement and construction industries has saved the country in excess of 6 million tons of harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Ash Resources has pioneered the development of y ash to be an important component of greener, more sustainable concrete. Our siliceous y ash is an effective Portland cement extender that, when used as a binder, enhances both the fresh and hardened properties of concrete. However, it is also an environmentally friendly material, which is used to: Recycle a bituminous hard coal waste-product into a value adding cementitious by-product Reduce the usage of non-renewable natural resources Save energy Reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions Cut down on the size of power station landll sites Lafarge is presently the only company in the construction materials sector to be listed in the 2009 100 Global Most Sustainable Corporations in the World and are a primary sponsor of the WWF (World Wide Fund for the Environment), helping to lead the ght against global warming. Ash Resources is committed to the strong sustainability leadership example set by its shareholder, Lafarge.

Our
Product Range
With over 30 years of acquired experience and technical expertise in the y ash business we have developed a range of y ash products.
The companys main grades of y ash are divided into two broad groups namely: classied and unclassied. Classifying refers to our investment in specialised airseparation equipment to manufacture products that conform to specications requiring particular size ranges. Our products are designed to meet the performance needs of customers specic applications.
DuraPozz
Ranked among the worlds best y ash for its consistent size, low LOI value and highly reactive chemical properties, DuraPozz is the highest volume selling classied y ash in South Africa for use in cement manufacturing and by the concrete industry. DuraPozz has a mean particle size of 25 micron, and complying to specication requirements, typically 90% of the products particles pass through a 45 micron sieve. In comparison the typical particle size distribution of general purpose cement ranges up to 100 micron with a mean particle size of 35 micron.

SuperPozz
SuperPozz is designed to meet the needs for an ultra or super-ne y ash to formulate high performance concretes particularly where durability is a key consideration or to meet construction challenge brought about by architectural creativity. One of the key attributes of SuperPozz is the signicant improvement in long term concrete performance with the resulting reduction in maintenance costs. Applications for SuperPozz include: - Self-compacting or self placing concretes - High performance ready-mixed and precast concrete
Wet sprayed concrete Tunnelling concretes Proprietary pre-bagged repairs, precision grouts and owable screeds Marine environment concretes where durability is critical Filler material in the manufacture of extruded plastics and rubber compounds
SuperPozz has been used extensively in the concrete foundations and piles for the Burj Dubai Tower which, when completed, will be the worlds tallest building at over 700 metres high.

PozzSand
PozzSand is termed a conditioned y ash product in that approximately 10% potable water is added to y ash enabling PozzSand to be transported in tipper trucks, which are covered by tarpaulin to minimise dust. As the name suggests, the product can be used as a reactive replacement for ne sand (aggregate) in concrete and is often used by cement producers as a source of alumina (AI2O3) - typical value in y ash >30% - for the raw mix or kiln feed.
Specication Compliance
In addition to our y ash products compliance to stringent South African specications, they also meet the exacting standards of many international specications e.g. EN 450S and N, ASTM C618b, BS3892: Part I and EN 197 as a constituent material.

Our Production
Facilities
Ash Resources is an ISO 9001:2000 listed company. Our regularly audited Quality Management System (QMS) together with stringent quality control reafrms quality as one of our core values and assures customers that quality is central to all parts of our business. Our existing production sites are situated in four provinces, next to major Eskom bituminous coal-red power stations. Selected y ash is recovered and conveyed to the Ash Resources processing plants for conversion into quality products, based on the chemical and physical characteristics of the specic source of raw y ash.
Fly ash has a high volume for a given weight resulting in transport costs playing a major role in the products competitiveness. This means that the location of our plants generally aims to provide optimum service to customers situated within an economically viable distance from the source of y ash. However, engineers engaged in projects requiring high performance concrete specify our y ash irrespective of distance. Where durability, impermeability, resistance to chemical attack and high strength are key concrete requirements, Ash Resources y ash products have provided the solution. Project references include: Lesotho Highlands Water Project Saldanha Steel Works and Quay extensions in the Western Cape Mozal alumium smelter in Mozambique Richards Bay coal berth extensions Gateway Shoppertainment Centre in KwaZulu-Natal Coega Project in Eastern Cape Hidd Port in Bahrain, Middle East Nag Hamadi Barrage on Nile River, Egypt

Matla plant
Sited at the Matla Power Station near Kriel in Mpumalanga, our Matla plants four classiers can produce up to 800 000 tons per year of our premium classied y ash, DuraPozzProTM. At Matla and Lethabo we convey ash from each of the six generation units at the Power Station. This ability enables us to maintain production levels when Eskom undertakes their Unit Maintenance Programme.
Kendal plant
Established in 1997 at Ogies, near Witbank, Mpumalanga, our Kendal plant has access to 2 million tons of y ash (often referred to as run of station material). The plant is presently only set up for PozzFill out-loading. However, feasibility and environmental impact studies have been completed in preparation for our proposed capacity increase with a new state-of-the-art classied y ash plant in the near future.
Majuba plant
Commissioned at the end of 2008, our Majuba plant in KwaZulu-Natal near Volksrust (close to the KZN border) offers a responsive and cost effective customer service to the coastal regions of the eastern KZN seaboard and neighbouring countries i.e. Swaziland and Mozambique.
Matimba plant
Due for commissioning in 2009, the Matimba plant is based at Eskoms Matimba power station near Lephalale in Limpopo. Our new plant will give accessibility of PozzFill to one of South Africas major mining areas and provide a platform to export y ash into Botswana and Namibia. 2009 | ASH RESOURCES | PA G E 1 3
