Information Networks for Cyber Physical Systems with Applications in Smart Grids: From Maxwells Demon to GPS Spoofing
ABSTRACT:
The efficiency, reliability and security of information network are of key importance in cyber physical systems (CPSs) such as smart grids. In this talk, we focus on three aspects of information network for controlling CPS, each with significant applications in smart grids: (1) Minimum Information Requirement: The control of CPS is considered as reducing the entropy of physical dynamics. The minimum communication between the sensor and controller is analyzed based on the motivation of the second law of thermodynamics and the detailed information theoretic analysis. (2) Information Network Operation: The CPS, with both information network and physical dynamics, is modeled as a hybrid system. The communication and control in the CPS is then jointly optimized after analyzing the impact of communications on control. (3) Timing Information Protection: Timing information attack, particularly GPS spoofing attack on smart grids, is proposed and analyzed. An effective cross-layer defense scheme is proposed for such an attack.
