When we visit a national park or look at the skyline of a city, often we do not enjoy a clear vista -- a white or brown

haze hangs in the air and affects the view. This haze is not natural. It is caused by man-made air pollution, often carried by the wind hundreds of miles from where it originated. Haze consists of tiny elements which occurs naturally or is a result of daily human activities. Smog produced by factories and automobiles as well as fire smoke is the main contributing factors of the existence of haze. The one of the main cause that touches off haze is the industries who evil mind construct the smog into the air. Many factories were over measure produced the smog that had over the standard and the smog seriously influence the air become air pollution. The components that make up haze are carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, dust and metals which may have negative effect on ones health especially that of the children and the elderly. Also not excluded are those who have certain diseases such as asthma, allergy, and pneumonia and lung disease. Workers working in the open air have a high risk in their health. As a result, a vehicle such as cars and trucks what is burning fossil fuels is also the cause of haze. Vehicles have exhausted the black opium during the vehicle driving on the road which had compose the haze happened. Besides the ships such as boats and steamers had worn out the harmful smog had invented haze happened too. Therefore, haze had affected individuals activities badly. Haze prevents one from carrying out his normal activities. Residents are also advised to abstain from outdoor activities who are farmers and fishermen have to find alternative ways to earn their income for the time being. In addition, forest fires that used to clear land are the reason of haze too. The authorities concerned prefer used the way forest fires to clear land because they think so it was the fastest way to clear land. But, forest fires make their work complete faster at the same time forest fires also made-up the haze. Haze- Effects Destruction of a well-balanced habitat Endangered animals like the proboscis monkey and the Orang Utan live in the forests of Indonesia. Deforestation deprives them of their usual food and water sources. The forest dwelling people are also badly affected by deforestation. Unfortunately, logging companies trespass on their ancestral land and cause their eviction. Health Our health is also greatly affected by the haze. Asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia and other respiratory related illnesses are widespread in a hazy area. The haze also causes nose bleeds, skin and eye irritations. Vegetation and Agriculture Thick haze prevents sunlight from reaching the green plants. As they fail to photosynthesize, the

plants eventually die, causing many insects which rely on them to die to. As such, pollination cannot take place and new vegetation cannot grow. Agriculture is also affected by the haze. Plants grow slower due to the lack of sunlight. The slow growth can drive up the price of vegetables. Soil Erosion As a Result of Haze Vegetation helps to bind the soil together, helping to prevent the soil from getting eroded easily. However, the demise of plants due to the effects of the haze allows the soil to be eroded easily. Surface runoff is increased during periods with high rainfalls. This contributes to soil erosion. Soil, ash carried with the haze from forest fires and other debris flow into the river, polluting the water. Aquatic life and fishes may die. Transport Even transport is affected. A severe condition of haze causes visibility to go down to 30 metres so flights may be cancelled or delayed. Furthermore, helicopter flights crucial to those living in remote inland areas and Sabah and Sarawak are also disallowed to carry on. In 1997, ship collisions and a plane crash in North Sumatra that killed more than 200 people were reported. The particles that cause the haze phenomenon can originate from many sources, some of which are natural and some anthropogenic. Natural sources include the oceans, forests and ground surface. However the majority of the particulates are from human activities which include open burning, land clearing, vehicular use and combustion of fossil fuels in industrial boilers. The haze is a constant phenomenon faced by Malaysia and her neighbouring countries. The haze is basically pollution of atmosphere, which is clogged with pollutants and other substances from forest fires. The haze is a direct effect of forest fire in Kalimantan and other parts of Indonesia due to slash and burn method of farming. The Indonesian authorities appear to have no power to control farmers from practising such methods. The haze is further worsened by open burning practised by most Malaysians. Open-field burning of rice straw by the rice planters and open burning of dried leaves and garbage done by the public are a few examples that done by Malaysian. Many are ignorant of the health effects of open burning. During the haze, hospitals and clinic often report a dramatic increase in respiratory problems, lung infections and asthma attack. The Air Pollution Index (API) usually indicates the hazardous and dangerous levels of pollution during this period. The haze has long-term side effects. Prolonged inhalation of polluted air will result in serious lung infection which particularly affects the elderly. The government must play its role to reduce the haze treat. It has to cooperate with the Indonesian authorities to stamp out forest fires. The culprits must be brought to

justice, either through healthy fine or prison sentence. Constant vigilance would ensure the perpetrators do not repeat their offence. The government should also raise the public awareness of the dangers of forest fire. Continuous campaign of the cause, solutions and steps-need-to-be-taken to reduce the haze need to be promoted through all types of social media like television, radio, newspaper and even via internet. The authorities should also provide assistance to farmers and introduce more sophisticated forest clearing methods. In Malaysia, strict laws must be imposed to penalise those who practise open burning. On-going campaigns on the dangers of open burning should be intensified. Individuals too have a role to play. They must participate in every campaign and stop burning. Students can advise their parents not to practice open burning. Every individual has to remember that we do not own the world, but instead we lent it from our future generations. We must protect our world so that our grandchildren woulh have a healthy earth to live. ______________________________________________________________________ Haze consists of tiny elements which occurs naturally or is a result of daily human activities.
