CHP and the use of gas
engines are hot topics in
the UK at the moment, so
GMP predicts keen
interest in a research
paper being presented by
one of the industrys
leading professionals -
Clarke Energys Adam
Wray-Summerson.
As Adam himself
explains: CHP is the
simultaneous production
of electricity with the
recovery and utilisation
heat.
CHP is a highly efficient
form of direct energy
conversion and it can
achieve primary energy
savings of approximately 40% compared to the separate
purchase of electricity from the national grid and a gas boiler for
onsite heating, he concludes.
Data Centres and Cooling are important issues for commerice and industry today. Alan
Beresford, Managing Director of EcoCooling, addresses this issue with his important paper:
The evaporative cooling of Data Centres to improve efficiency.
The cooling of data centres is becoming more of an issue due to limited power, high energy
costs and a high carbon output. Cooling can account for as much energy as the IT equipment in
many cases. The application of low cost fresh air systems with evaporative cooling can reduce
the cooling energy used by at least 90% with pay back being in under a year in many applica-
tions.
Alan Beresford explains the thrust of his study: The progress of todays Evaporative Cooling
Technology in data centres will be reviewed, taking in filtration, temperature and environmental
control, new ASHRAE standards and fire suppression. The principle of evaporative cooling will
be explained and the operating costs, power consumption, environmental impact and
inadequacy of some existing installations will be reviewed.
Case studies and design spread sheets will be used to explain in detail how evaporative cooling
is being used successfully in many different types of data centres including retrofit, new builds
and containerised cooling.

Cambridge to get
its own CHP
power plant
Homes in Cambridge could
one day get their heat and
electricity from the citys own
power plant.
James Beal, advisor of the
Low Carbon Development
Initiative (LCDI), which is
driving the project has con-
firmed that Cambridge City
Council and the University of
Cambridge are backing a
25m joint project for a 2-10
MW gas-fired plant and a heat
network for Cambridge.
The idea has has attracted
more than 150,000 the
250,000 required to deliver a
final business plan covering
financing and design.
The CHPplant would cut the
citys heat-related carbon
emissions by more than 8,000
tonnes annually. This
represents about 57% of the
current output from the
council and academic build-
ings involved.
Under the plans, an energy
centre would be built in
Queen Anne Terrace, in the
multi-storey car park or at
Kelsey Kerridge Sports
Centre.
Not only will the plant
generate electricity for all the
residents, but it would also
store the heat which is
created as a by-product and
distribute it using highly-
insulated pipes, known as
heat mains.
6 JANUARY FEBRUARY 2013 UK POWER NEWS
The UK District Energy
Association has called for a
commonsense approach to
industry standards.
In a recent report the UKDEA
has expressed concern that,
whilst a standard aimed at
ensuring district energy
schemes are well planned &
appropriately operated is a
good thing, the emerging
industry could be stifled if
such standards place some
quite unnecessary financial
burdens or restrictions on
innovation at this critical point
in its development.
The UK is one of the last
developed countries to take
up district energy on a large
scale, and the industry is
enjoying an unprecedented
boom since the turn of the
century.
However, the UKDEA
recognises that countries
such as Germany and
Denmark have been success-
fully operating many district
energy schemes on aa
very much wider scale than
the UK for some decades
now.
The UKDEA acknowledges
that many of these old hands
have spent years developing
industry standards - we

Peterborough City Council has chosen award-winning green energy company BIOGEN to
deliver a 5-year contract to recycle food waste from local households to create energy.
The projected 6,000 tonnes of food waste collected each year will be processed by means of
anaerobic digestion at BIOGENs Westwood plant near Rushden, Northamptonshire.
Sending the food waste to anaerobic digestion instead of landfill will prevent up to 6,000 tonnes
of carbon emissions entering the atmosphere each year, reports the company
Anaerobic digestion works by processing food waste which is stored in temperature controlled
sealed tanks. Naturally occurring bacteria in the food waste produce biogas which is captured
and used as a fuel in a combined heat and power engine to produce electricity and heat. The
renewable electricity is piped to the National Grid, the heat is used back in the process and the
remaining liquid is used as a biofertiliser for crops - nothing is wasted, reports BIOGEN
Cllr Gavin Elsey, Cabinet Adviser to the Deputy Leader of Peterborough City Council told UKPN:
"We're very impressed with BIOGEN's operation and lucky that it's relatively local to us. It's great
to know that the city's waste is going to be turned into fertiliser and generate green electricity,
rather than going to landfill. We've been very pleased with the uptake of the service in
Peterborough, which we're sure many councils will be keen to emulate."
Richard Barker, BIOGENs Chief Executive said, We are thrilled to have won the contract with
Peterborough, and look forward to working together with the Council to deliver the most effective
and environmental food waste treatment solution for the residents of Peterborough in the coming
years. This contract win is another strong endorsement of all the work that our teams have done
to create a truly outstanding business and further cements BIOGENs credentials as the leading
food waste AD company in the UK.
BIOGEN'S strategy is to develop a national network of at least 10 AD plants over the next 5-6
years. Anaerobic digestion is already attracting increasing attention from local authorities seek-
ing to set up food waste collection schemes, says a report for WRAP (Waste & Resources Action
Programme) by independent consultants, Eunomia.
should be looking to these
industry leaders for guidance
rather than trying to reinvent
the wheel, it says.
The Association believes that
any standard set in the UK
would need to be harmonised
with Europe for practical
reasons. It feels that adopting
existing standards - or at least
elements of them - should be
the top priority for the UK
district energy industry.
UKDEA chairman and CEO
of Cofely District Energy,
Simon Woodward, has
commented: The UKDEAs
view is that standards are a
good idea, especially if the
significant growth in DE takes
place as we all expect.
This will prevent systems
being poorly-installed and
operated which was the main
cause of DE schemes being
removed in the 1970s
following the previous boom.
He concluded: Any industry
standards which come about
in relation to district energy
should be set by a working
group of industry experts and
should be practical and
workable.
They should not put
unnecessary costs onto an
emerging industry.
As of February 6th, 2013,
ArcGen Hilta / SMC has
changed its name to Morris
Site Machinery.
Chris Morris, Chief
Executive, told UKPN: We
have decided to bring our
leading brands together
under the banner of new
company name to cut
through some confusion that
exists over our name and the
brands we represent.
This is also an ideal
opportunity for us to refresh
the identity of the world-
leading brands we currently
manufacture and distribute,
he commented.

ES2 in energy scheme
Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) has partnered with
energy metering and billing specialist ENER-G Switch2
(ES2) to deliver a borough-wide energy and cost saving
project that is helping residents to reduce fuel bills and
carbon dioxide emissions. The project is the first of its kind
and size in the UK and utilises the innovative G6 EcoServe
data collection and energy management technology,
designed and developed by ES2.
The new G6 system provides a fair and accurate billing
process for both pay-as-you-go and credit billing
consumers. It incorporates an in-home display unit that lets
customers see, in graphical form, how much energy they
are consuming, when they are using it, how much it is
costing them and how much credit they have available.
This facility, which complies with the Code for Sustainable
Homes, makes it easier for residents to budget and to
monitor and manage their energy usage, helping them to
reduce consumption and costs.
The pay-as-you-go element works much like topping up a
mobile phone, using smart wireless technology to replace
the traditional token-based pre-payment system.
KNH appointed ES2 in December 2011under a 1.7m
contract to create a flexible energy management and
payment process for its residents and provide a five-year
maintenance and data administration programme for all
homes connected to the community heating supply.
Because KNH's 1036 homes are spread across 28
individual schemes throughout the Kirklees borough, a
traditional energy pre-payment scheme involving small
numbers of residents purchasing 'credit' from local shops
was not practical or viable. In addition, KNH was looking for
more than a payment system; they wanted residents to be
actively involved in managing their energy more efficiently -
to help eradicate fuel poverty and achieve a smaller carbon
footprint.
Since the roll-out of the G6 technology began 6 months
ago, residents have reduced overall energy consumption
by15%, but when winter consumption is factored in and res-
idents get used to the system, KNH predicts that the annual
average consumption will reduce by 30 to 50%.
"The key to reducing energy consumption is being able to
see what you are using," said Barry Goodwin, KNH Project
Manager. "With the economy of scale of supplying heat via
a district heat network, we already provide lower cost heat,
but nowresidents can track how much energy they are using
and are taking action to reduce consumption.

New report asks
for clear energy
vision for the UK
Carbon Connect has
launched its new report,
Distributed Generation:
From Cinderella to Centre
Stage.
The independent inquiry
concludes that distributed
generation will play an
increasingly important role in
helping to solve the UK's
energy trilemma and realise
Energy Bill ambitions.
It states that in the UK
distributed generation has
been a largely neglected
'Cinderella issue' and that
Government should now
move it centre stage
alongside other key policy
areas such as energy
efficiency and smart grids.
The report stresses the
importance of establishing a
clear vision for distributed
generation.
Supported by Siemens and
Covanta Energy, the report
makes over 20 key
recommendations for the
energy regulator Ofgem, the
distribution network operators
and the government.
It states that distributed
generation will be critical in
the trebling of renewables
capacity to 45 GW by 2020
and delivering around 40%
additional lower carbon
energy from CHP by 2020,
bringing installed capacity to
around 9 GW.
UKdistributed generation
currently represents around
11% (9 GW) of the UKs
electricity capacity and over
half of this is renewables.

MPW - is the CHPfuel of the future
The University of Warwick spin out company, Recycling Technologies, has completed an equity
financing deal with the Wroxall Investors Group (WIG), a Midlands-based business angel
syndicate. Recycling Technologies was formed to commercialise a process developed at the
University of Warwick that can transform Mixed Plastic Waste [MPW] into heat and electricity.
The company was spun out in 2011, with assistance from Warwick Ventures, the Universitys
research commercialisation arm.
Adrian Griffiths, Managing Director at Recycling Technologies, told UKPN: We are really
pleased with this deal. It not only secures the funding we need at this stage in our growth but
simultaneously has expanded the experience that we can draw on as we develop the business.
To enable the investors to fully support the business, Martin Lusby, an experienced chairman
and business angel will also be taking a position within the company as Chairman of the Board.
Recycling Technologies is at an exciting stage in its development said Martin.
The concept of a machine that can be installed into existing recycling facilities to turn what most
people still regard as waste plastic into electricity and heat in a CHP plant (Combined Heat and
Power) is timely given the increasing costs of landfill and energy prices.
"With the first machine is due to go into production in 2014 the WIG investment will allow the
team and company infrastructure to be expanded at the Swindon base to ensure this
commercial opportunity is fully exploited.
only pays for the energy used
and avoids all capital,
installation, operating and
maintenance costs of the
CHP system. In addition, the
energy produced is priced
lower than existing and future
utility costs providing
immediate and on-going cost
savings."
Benjamin continued: CHP
systems are a cleaner energy
option, offering considerable
environmental benefits when
compared with electricity from
the grid and conventional
boiler systems.
Recognised as a low carbon
technology, the system will
reduce the hotels CO2
emissions by some 147
metric tons. According to
EuroSite, this will, in turn
reduce the impact of taxes
such as the Climate Change

Lithiumion
problems for 787
A
irline safety inspectors have found no faults with the
battery used on Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, Japan's
transport ministry has said.
The battery was initially considered the likely source of
problems on 787s owned by two Japanese airlines, but
that has since been ruled out, experts say.
The world's entire fleet of 50 787s has been grounded
while inspections are carried out. Attention has now
shifted to the electrical system twhich monitors battery
voltage, charging and temperature.
Japans Transport Ministry official Shigeru Takano told
UKPN: We have found no major quality or technical
problem with the lithium-ion batteries.
Shares in GS Yuasa, which makes the batteries, jumped
5% at the news.
The latest trouble arose when pilots for Japan's All Nippon
Airways smelled something burning during a flight and
received a cockpit warning of battery problems.
An inspection found that a flammable liquid had leaked
from an area located near a main lithium-ion battery below
the cockpit. Investigators found burn marks around the
damage.
Then there was the January 7th battery fire on a parked
Japan Airlines plane at Boston Logan - the fire took airport
firefighters 40 minutes to extinguish.
An investigation into a lithium ion battery which
overheated on a Boeing 787 flight in Japan found
evidence of the same type of "thermal runaway" seen in a
similar incident in Boston, officials have said.
The Japan Transportation Safety Board said that CAT
scans and other analysis found damage to all eight cells in
the battery that overheated on the All Nippon Airways 787
on Jan. 16, which prompted an emergency landing and
probes by both U.S. and Japanese aviation safety
regulators.
They also found signs of short-circuiting and thermal run-
away, a chemical reaction in which rising temperature
causes progressively hotter temperatures. U.S. investiga-
tors found similar evidence in the battery that caught fire
last month on a Japan Airlines 787 parked in Boston.
Photos distributed by the Japanese investigators [below]
show severe charring of six of the eight cells in the ANA
787's battery and a frayed and broken earthing wire -
meant to minimise the risk of electric shock.
All 50 Boeing 787s in operation are grounded as regula-
tors and Boeing investigate the problem. The Japanese
probe is focusing on flight data records and on the charger
and other electrical systems connected to the damaged
battery.

Work has begun laying the
foundations for Devonports
new Energy-from-Waste plant
In 2012 MVV signed a
contract with South West
Devon Waste Partnership to
build the facility at North Yard,
Devonport.
The plant will deal with waste
from Plymouth, Devon and
Torbay which is not recycled
or composted and will
generate electricity as well as
usable heat in CHP mode,
thereby saving valuable fossil
resources and reducing
carbon-dioxide output, says
the company.
In the plants boiler, water will
be heated by the heat from
the furnace, up to 420C at a
pressure of 60 bar. The steam
will be sent to a high efficiency
steam turbine which will
generate up to 22.5 MW
electricity and 23.3 MW heat.
The steam will be used to
heat the Dockyard and Naval

future houses and offices in
Plymouth.
The majority of the electricity
will be consumed by the

Wind turbine turns in an Osterley
direction for Sky/MITIE
Last month, MITIE, the UK-based outsourcing and energy services company, began its contract
providing integrated facilities management for British Sky Broadcasting Group (Sky), the UKs
largest entertainment and home communications company.
The contract, worth in excess of 100m over a five-year period, involves MITIE providing
energy management services across Skys estate in the UK and Ireland. As well as its two main
campuses in London and Scotland, MITIE will work at 12 regional offices, two data centres and
dozens of POP sites (internet exchange points).
Its been almost a year since MITIE completed a project to build an onsite wind turbine at Skys
broadcast facility, Sky Studios, in Osterley, West London. Claimed to be the most sustainable
broadcast facility of its type in Europe, the turbine provides over 133 MWh per annum of clean
energy to the studios.
In May 2012 Sky inaugurated the companys first-ever wind turbine installation at its West
London campus. The 55-metre Northwind 100 turbine provides over 133 MWh per year of clean
energy to Sky Studios - the companys state-of-the-art broadcast facility enough to meet its
annual office lighting requirements. The experts estimate that the amount of CO2 offset by the
turbine will be equivalent to driving 370,000 miles in a typical petrol-powered car each year.
The wind turbine operates in conjunction with Skys recently-commissioned Combined Cooling,

olcanic heat from deep underground could be
harnessed to provide as much as 20% of Britains
electricity and channel heat to millions of homes, a report
has suggested. Geothermal heat could supply almost as
much power as nine nuclear reactors, say researchers.
Deep geothermal energy could be exploited across the
UK, with hot spots including Cornwall, East Yorkshire,
Hampshire, Northern Ireland and Scotland, according to
the study for the Renewable Energy Association (REA).
But the current subsidies on offer for geothermal energy
are not enough to attract international investment that can
develop the industry and create thousands of jobs, a report
by engineering consultants, Sinclair Knight Merz, found.
Iceland provides a useful template for nation which is
efficiently utilising its geothermal resources. About 81% of
total primary energy supply in Iceland is derived from
domestically produced renewable energy sources. In
2007, geothermal energy provided about 66% of primary
energy, the share of hydropower was 15%, and fossil fuels
- mainly oil - 19%.
The main use of geothermal energy in Iceland is for
space heating with the heat being distributed to buildings
through extensive district-heating systems. About 85% of
all houses in Iceland are heated with geothermal energy.
Most of the hydropower plants are owned by Landsvirkjun
(the National Power Company) which is the main supplier
of electricity in Iceland.
The REA believes geothermal has significant potential
as a baseload electricity source, which can be exploited
as a backup to the more variable wind power and adjusted
to meet electricity demand, as well as providing heat. It
could also create thousands of jobs, the industry body
said.
Increasing subsidies for geothermal power would cost
an estimated 11million a year, which is the equivalent of
adding less than 50p to the average electricity bill.
Dr Ryan Law, of the REA, said the Government would
not end up facing an industry boom that pushed subsidies
out of control, as in the case of small-scale solar electricity,
as only a few power plants would go ahead in the next few
years. He said there were currently two schemes with
planning permission, both in Cornwall, but investors were
waiting to see what returns would be before committing to
developing geothermal.
Tim Smit, the Eden Project founder, who is planning to
build a geothermal heat and power station at his own site,
called for the Government to back the birth of a new
industry. The REA wants deep geothermal to receive the
same high level of support as other new technologies -
such as wave and tidal power - to drive development.

will be in charge of the erection of the new power plant for
Carrington Power Limited.
The total contract value is approximately 640 million, with
Alstoms share being around 410 million. The 880 MW
power plan will be built under an Engineering, Procurement
and Construction (EPC) contract. Duro Felguera will be
responsible for construction and site management.
Alstoms scope includes the supply of two GT26 gas
turbines and other key components, including the steam
turbine, heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and turbo-
generator. Additionally, Alstom has been awarded a long-
term service agreement valid for 16 years to maintain this
equipment once it enters commercial operation.
Scheduled for completion in 2016, the power station will
be capable of providing enough power for around a million
homes. The station will be located on the site of the old
Carrington power station in Trafford, next to the Manchester
Shipping Canal and the River Mersey. Up to 600 people will
be employed at the peak of construction.
Mark Coxon, Senior Vice President of Alstoms Gas
business said: This is the fifth gas-fired power plant that
will be built in the UK out of the last six to have contracts
awarded, which is a great reflection on the strengths of our
technology.
In the UK, Alstom has built, maintains and operates over

NASA is powering
up for a moonbase
building
programme?
F
or space scientists dreaming up a manned base on the
moon, 3D printing with lunar dust looms as an attractive
possibility. Such on-demand fabrication would allow
astronauts to repair broken parts, manufacture spare ones
and maybe even build structures, all out of the dirt scooped
from under their boots.
In a new study involving artificial moon dust, engineers
have shown that the technology is close to becoming
reality if only the power problem can be solved. With 10
pounds of simulated lunar dirt (or regolith) in hand, NASA
officials approached researchers at Washington State
University and challenged them to melt and resolidify the
fake moon rock using 3D laser printing technology, which
produces objects based on a computer model.
For the new study, the researchers fed the raw simulant
powder into a 3D printer, heating the material to high
temperatures and printing it out in smooth half-millimeter
(0.02 inches) layers to form small cylindrical shapes with
no visible cracks.
The structures which came out of the printer were about
as hard as typical soda lime glass, the researchers explain
in a study detailing the recent experiments in the Rapid
Prototyping Journal.
Obviously, building any large-scale structure on the
moon will entirely depend on a large and reliable power
source. But NASA has already thought of that.
NASA has proposed a plan - one of many potential
schemes - to establish a fusion reactor in its future moon
base. A fusion-powered system could generate up to
500MW and give any lunar outpost the power equivalent of
supplying a city on Earth.
The core of the plan is to bury a nuclear reactor below
the lunar surface to make use of lunar soil as additional
radiation shielding [pic bottom left].
The engines which convert heat energy to electricity
would be located in a tower structure above the reactor,
and radiators would extend out from the tower to radiate
into space any leftover heat energy.
Professor Chris Llewellyn Smith, director of Energy
Research at Oxford University, comments: "With enough
money we could probably build a fusion reactor now but it
would not be economical. The challenge is to make it
reliable and competitive."
This confidence is built upon the fact that fusion is now a
routine event at the Joint European Torus (JET)
programme in Culham, Oxfordshire..
Research at JET in the UK over the past 20 years has
led to continuous advances in understanding the behaviour
of the plasma. These have led to reduced heat loss due to
turbulence and that implies improved efficiency.
The Son-Of-Jet is fusion reactor called ITER, currently
under construction in France and is due to start operation
in 2020. Its principal goal is to determine the viability of
fusion at the scale of a power station. Success is widely
anticipated and there are already plans afoot to build a
"demonstration power plant" to start operating in the
2030s.

Biofuel potential
identified in
willow trees
British scientists have
identified willow trees which
can yield five times as much
sugar as ordinary varieties,
drastically reducing the
impact of biofuels on
agriculture and the UK.
Researchers found that if the
trees grew at an angle, they
produced a special kind of
wood which resulted in the
higher sugar content.
Willow, a short rotation cop-
pice crop, is widely grown as
a source for the biofuel and
biomass industries.
Dr Michael Ray, a researcher
at Imperial College London
which recently undertook the
experiments, commented:
"It would drastically reduce
the environmental impact of
biofuels because you would
not need such a severe
pre-treatment in the
conversion process. This is
currently one of the highest
energy consumption steps in
the process of converting
woody biomass to biofuels."
Energy intensive pre-treat-
ment processes are used to
soften the wood before it goes
through an enzymatic stage to
break down the woody matter
in order to produce biofuel.
Our feeling is that these
varieties that we know yield
more sugar will need a much
less severe pre-treatment
process," Dr Ray said in a
public statement.

UK & Ireland sign
new windfarm
agreement
January 24th, 2013, saw UK
and Irish ministers sign an
agreement that could see
some of the world's largest
wind turbines built across the
Irish Midlands.
Stretching more than 600 feet
(180 metres) in the air, the
towers are set to generate
energy for millions of UK
homes from 2017.
The UK government says the
Irish power is a cheaper form
of renewable than offshore
wind. However, a lobby of
environmentalists have just
publicly described the
scheme as crazy. They say it
risks damaging Ireland's
landscape.
Under the plan, a number of
companies are seeking to
erect hundreds of wind
turbines across the boggy
midlands of Ireland. The
power generated would be
transferred to the UK via
undersea cables which would
join the grid at two points in
Wales.
One developer, Element
Power, says the plan would
save UK consumers around
7bn over 15 years compared
to other renewable sources.
The developers also say that
thousands of jobs will be
created in Ireland and the
economy as a whole will
benefit. But concerns are now
growing that the turbines

dina has been awarded the contract to supply the power generation to the largest waste
anaerobic digestion plant in Northern Ireland. This is a 50,000 tonne per annum Anaerobic
Digestion plant which has started construction at Granville Eco Park in Dungannon, Co Tyrone,
Northern Ireland. The plant will treat commercial and food waste. The plant will be constructed
for B9 Organic Energy by a JV between Williams Industrial Services and Veolia Water.
The biogas produced will be fed to two MWM Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units supplied
by Edina UK Ltd. The containerised CHP units will be 2.76MW electrical, enough to provide
power to 6500 households. The Edina units chosen have market leading electrical conversion
efficiency, are constructed in house by Edina in the UK and have the lowest whole life cost of
ownership.
The generation plant will be delivered and commissioned in 2013 with full plant operation
anticipated by early 2014. Edina is the sole UK and Ireland distributor for MWM gas engines and
provides turnkey solutions for all gas and biogas generation requirements. Outputs range from
200kWe to 4.3MWe. All manufacture meets UK gas, CDM and H&S standards and the

will be of a size and scale not
seen in Britain or Ireland
before.
Because the landscape
chosen as the windfarm sites
is relatively windless, one
company behind the scheme
says the wind turbines will
need to stretch high into the
sky to catch sufficient wind to
generate power.
They will be spread around
40 clusters in five counties,"
said Element Power's Peter
Harte.
Ireland currently has an
installed capacity of 2,000
megawatts.
Depending on weather
conditions this is enough to
supply 1.3 million homes. In
2010 the Irish Wind Energy
Association reported an
installed capacity of 1,746
megawatts, enough to power
753,000 households.
Irelands 2012 capacity is
more than four times the total
of 495.2 megawatts in 2005.
In 2008 alone, the rate of
growth was 54.6%, amongst
the highest in the world. Last
year the output from the
country's turbines peaked
reaching 1,506 MW.
IPU features at
Data Centre World
F
ebruary 27th - 28th, 2013: At this years Data Centre
World, held in London, the IPU Group will be
showcasing its full range of fuel conditioning products,
designed to combat fuel contamination in back up power
supplies to ensure protection of data.
Many data centres invest in standby generators to
ensure that power, and therefore data, is not lost in the
event of a power failure. Most have robust testing and
maintenance procedures, but many neglect a vital
component - diesel fuel, the contamination of which can
cause generators to fail, reports IPU.
The IPU Group manufactures and supplies a large
number of fuel conditioning products to the data centre
industry, all designed to protect diesel fuel and ensure
back up power can be relied upon when required.
Its full range of products, including fuel sampling and
testing equipment, fuel stability additives and fuel polishing
equipment will be on show at stand D60 at Data Centre
World 2012.
Andy Hill, Group Marketing Manager at IPU Group, told
UKPN: With 50 years experience in the standby power
industry, all of our products are designed and
manufactured to the highest level to ensure that we are
minimising the risk of power loss for all of our customers.
With 24/7/365 requirements now placed on IT systems,
availability and performance are becoming more critical.
Server consolidation and infrastructure rationalisation are
also creating more compact and centralised data centres
so protecting your systems against power failure has
become more critical than ever. We are looking forward to
showcasing our products at the show and informing
visitors about how they can use our equipment and
services to ensure that they are always protected against
this issue, he concluded.
Fuel contamination can come from a number of sources
and can include water, diesel bug, various particles, acids
resins and gums all capable of blocking filters. Current
diesel engine technology is very sensitive to fuel borne
contamination, and even low levels can cause generator
running problems or even total breakdown, resulting in loss
of standby power, loss of revenue and, most damagingly,
loss of data.
All of IPU Groups fuel polishing products are designed
to preserve the quality of stored diesel fuel, constantly
re-circulating fuel through a series of filtration stages
removing water and solid particle contamination. This
reduces the risk of unpredictable failure of critical diesel
driven equipment. Operating independently through a pre-
set in-built timer, all systems are designed to ensure the
utmost protection of fuel, without sacrificing ease of use for
the customer.
All of IPU Groups products are designed and built in
house, with an expert team of designers and engineers
providing bespoke solutions for their customers.
Aside from fuel polishing equipment, IPU Group also
ensures that sampling and testing, and fuel additives
remain at the forefront of any project. This offers
customers a full service, ensuring that fuel remains pure
and any back up power generators will not suffer.

Nordex targeting the UK market with new
wind turbine models
N
ordex is targeting the UK and European market with its most powerful turbine yet for windy
sites, amidst claims the technology can boost energy yields by an impressive 31%.
The German wind turbine manufacturer unveiled two new machines at the European Wind
Energy Association (EWEA) conference earlier this month - the 3MW N117/3000 for medium
wind speeds and the N100/3300 for very windy areas.
The new machines have much larger rotors than previous platforms, increasing the swept area
by 23-37% with a view to boosting energy yields by up to 31%.
But despite the increase in yields, the new machines also seek to minimise noise, including
eight settings that allow the user to balance generation and sound.
Dr Jurgen Zeschky, chief executive of Nordex, said the new designs were aiming to deliver
significant cost reductions for onshore wind projects.
"With our Generation Delta, we have reached a new stage of evolution based on our proven
multi-megawatt technology," he told UKPN. "Our foremost goal was to lower the electricity
production costs. The new Nordex multi megawatt turbines achieve an increase of up to 31%in
yields, making them a particularly worthy investment."
The company is planning to install eight of the new machines across Europe this year, including
projects in Denmark and Finland, with commercial deliveries expected to start in 2014.
The new machines are also expected to open up new opportunities for Nordex in areas with
strong winds and cold temperatures. It said it would be targeting markets across the EU,
including the UK and Ireland, Scandinavia, France, Turkey and Northern Germany with the new
machine.
Siemens has also unveiled its new 4MW-130 offshore platform, providing a slightly larger
capacity to customers of its popular 3.6MW offshore turbine.
turbines and that is a
mistake," he said. "We really
don't want people getting
disillusioned and becoming
sceptical about renewable
energy because they buy a
small windmill and it doesn't
work as well as it could.
Small windmills with a
horizontal design spend too
much time searching for the
wind. A vertical-axis turbine,
such as the Urbine, doesn't
care which direction the wind
comes from, so is perfect for
the more challenging wind
conditions where small
windmills get installed."
After six months testing at
Myres Hill, a second Urbine
will be installed at a test site in
Scotland that offers high
average wind speeds and
complex terrain.
Bender UK
achieves Health
and Safety Award
for commitment to
safe working
E
lectrical safety specialist Bender UK is celebrating
achieving industrys flagship standard for occupational
health and safety best practice at its headquarters in
Ulverston which houses product testing facilities and
delivers, sales, service, project management and technical
support.
Bender UK has achieved OHSAS 18001 (an
international occupational health and safety management
system specification) after six months of intensive activity
driven by a determination to have the new standard in
place for the start of 2013.
The company specialises in the development of
innovative solutions for safe handling of electrical power
specifically tailored to meet the needs of its customers
across a wide range of sectors from healthcare, rail and
marine engineering through to electric cars, data handling
centres and solar power generation.
Health and Safety Manager Jon Lyons was given the
objective by Bender UK Managing Director Steve Mason to
obtain the safety award. However, Jon pays tribute to the
commitment and dedication of the whole company which
was needed to reach the required standard, including the
implementation of a Health and safety working group
which enhanced the bid.
Jon explains: Bender UK has an excellent safety record
as you would expect from a company which is in the
business of electrical safety across sectors where the
power system availability is crucial, such as healthcare and
operating theatres, data centres, power generation and
high-tech manufacturing.
A large part of our service support and installation takes
place on customer sites so Bender wanted to be able to
show the highest safety standard by gaining OHSAS
18001, and that meant examining and if necessary
upgrading management procedures, quality systems and
safety protocols within the business.
Accreditation to OHSAS 18001 will ensure that Bender
UK has the relevant qualities to adhere to large contractor
safety requirements and complements Zero Harm policies
which many now adopt. It will also give Bender UK a
competitive edge over other organisations not accredited
to OHSAS 18001 and will enhance the companys ability to
win new contracts. In addition to this award, Bender UK
has just been awarded Safe Contractor accreditation - a
leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises
very high standards in health and safety management.

Integrating a
gen-set at QEH
S
erving the population of Greenwich
and Bexley, Queen Elizabeth
Hospital (QEH) in Woolwich was con-
structed in a PFI-funded programme
in March 2001 on the site of a former military
hospital.
As healthcare has become increasingly
sophisticated, the need for power at the
hospital has grown.
The existing standby power provision at
QEH was already considerable: the hospital
has two standby power substations,
Substation 1/3 and Substation 2, which were
served by standby generators with 1.3 MVA
and 1.1 MVA capacities respectively.
Substation 2 serves the hospitals main
clinical block and South London Healthcare
NHS Trust carried out a full analysis of the
essential power requirements and the clinical
risk factors affecting the business critical need
for standby power.
The conclusion was that the standby power
provision needed to be increased from 1 MVA
to 2 MVA at Substation 2 with a control and
synchronisation system that would ensure
critical power was restored within 15 seconds
of mains failure. Dieselec Thistle was brought
in to work with main contractor, Skanska, in
developing a standby power solution for
Substation 2 that would provide maximum
system resilience along with minimised risk.
As the existing generator was still in good
working order and the specification needed to
answer the best value requirements of a
public sector environment, it was decided that
a second 1 MVA generator synchronised with
the first generator to increase the capacity to 2
MVA would offer the best response.
The existing single 1 MVA generator in
Substation 2 supported two primary LV
switchboards via a load sharing panel, and
this was configured as a break before make
standby with no synchronisation or parallel
capacity.
A major part of the brief for Dieselec Thistle
was to redesign the control and PLC (pro-
grammable logic control) systems to ensure
that switch over to standby and back to mains
was smooth, power was prioritised to the most
critical services first and both generators were
synchronised to operate as a single standby
installation.
Dieselec Thistle custom-specified the 1MVA
generator which was built by FG Wilson at the
companys factory in Larne, Northern Ireland,
and factory witness-tested by the Dieselec
Thistle team.
To accommodate the additional generator on
site a second plant room was constructed at
Substation 2 and this was fitted out with a
specially-designed and constructed steel
substructure to support the new generators
exhaust and gas silencers.
While the existing bulk storage fuel tanks, a
legacy of the old military hospital on the site,
had sufficient capacity to serve both the
existing and the new generators, new
replacement oil transfer duty and standby
pumps that refill the new generators day tank
each time the day tank levels drop below the
50% mark were installed.
A new connection created between the bulk
storage tank and the new generator day tank.
Automated fuel monitoring was built into the
new standby power installations control
system to ensure that there is always
sufficient fuel in the day tank for the
generators immediate requirements.
The complexity of installing the new infra-
structure, updating the control systems and
synchronising the new generator with the
legacy kit required the existing generator to be
taken offline for several weeks.
As a result, the Dieselec Thistle team
installed a temporary generator to provide the
full 2MV standby capacity while the work was
carried out.
The key challenge was in the design and
testing of the control and synchronisation
system which needed to address prescribed
priorities in terms of business critical power
requirements while offering maximum flexibil-
ity to mitigate risk.
In order for the two generators to work
together as a single system a new control
panel and load distribution system had to be
designed and the PLC programmed with an
extensive range of cause and effect scenarios
to ensure that the available load is prioritised.
However, in addition to ensuring that, under
normal circumstances, the system delivers
parallel operation of the two generators and
transformers, it has also been designed to
enable each to operate independently of the
other and prioritise the reduced available load
accordingly should there be a failure on one of
the two generators.
While the primary aim of the standby power
project at QEH was to increase capacity, the
end result has been to enhance provision.
The additional generator provides the work
horse, but it is the complex control systems
and infrastructure improvements that will real-
ly future proof the hospitals standby power
capabilities.

Edinas Welsh
Water contracts
T
he initial 2011 order for Welsh Water
involved the delivery of complete con-
tainer gensets for four large advanced
thermal digestion projects at Eign,
Wrexham, Cardiff, and Afan, with a total
generator output of more than 10 MWe.
Edina UK received the second order, for
power generation from sewage gas from
Anglian Water, under the AMPS5
programme.
The contract involved the supply of a
number of containerised gensets over a
period of five years, up to 2016. The first six
were commissioned in early 2011.
The gas engines manufactured by
Mannheim, Germany-based MWM, are
noted for their high-efficiency, proven
reliability and low maintenance.
The Edina Group is famous for its track
record in design, construction, and long-
term operation of gas engines powered by
various types of gas, including landfill &
sewage gas.
At Eign, near Hereford, Edina provided a
full Turnkey package for the power and heat
provision of the build contract.
This comprised of two MWM TCG
2016V12C gas ignition gensets integrated
into a fully automated waste heat boiler
system to fulfil the requirements of the
advanced digestion system installed by
Imtech to treat the waste.
The contract involved the supply of 7 fully
containerised generating sets at three
locations, Eign, Cardiff and Afon, with a
totally generating capacity of over 9MWe.
Containerisation takes place in Edinas
manufacturing centre in Lisburn, Northern
Ireland.
Having total control over the design and
manufacturing process enables Edina to
produce class leading products to the
highest quality standards, reports the
company.
Anaerobic Digfestion of sewage sludge

used the biogas produced to power sewage
sites and to export electricity ton the grid to
offset operational costs.
Recent environmental requirements and
process innovations have led to Advanced
Anaerobic Digestion where the sewage
sludge is pretreated thermally and
enzymically before the digestion process.
This pasteurises the sludge and increases
conversion to biogas.
Often this process requires steam for
heating and this is produced from the
exhaust heat of the Biogas CHP engine.
Under the current AMP 5 programme
orders have been received from Welsh
Water, Anglian Water, Northumbrian Water,
Yorkshire Water and Jersey States.
Edina is the sole distributor in the Uk and
Ireland for MWM, the worlds oldest
manufacturer of gas-powered engines.
With individual gas-powered generator sets
form 400 - 4400kW, Edina provides
complete turnkey installations, supplying
electricity, hot water, steam or absorption
chilling.
These modules have electrical
efficiencies of up to 44%, overall

FG Wilson & the
Aviva Stadium
S
porting arenas and stadiums are
increasingly turning to FG Wilson
(Engineering) Ltd, one of the leading
global manufacturers of gas and
diesel generator sets, to ensure that their pro-
gramme of sporting and music events run
without a hitch.
The Aviva Stadium in Dublin, formerly
Lansdowne Road, is a world-class venue
for rugby, football, concerts and business
conferences and everything from the
scoreboards and the floodlights to the
under pitch heating is powered by FG
Wilson generators with a 6.8 MVA power
rating.
FG Wilson has installed power generation
sets and runs ongoing maintenance
contracts at other stadiums including Croke
Park, Casement Park and Thomond Park.
In its original incarnation, Lansdowne Road
stadium was the oldest sports stadium in
Europe but after a complete rebuild
programme in 2007, the 50,000 all-seater
Aviva Stadium re-opened in August 2010.
FG Wilson, invited to tender for the power
supply through the main contractors Kentz,
secured the order due to its technical
expertise in ensuring the delivery of a
bespoke solution that was integral to the
look and feel of the finished structure, and
the companys early involvement with the
stadium redevelopment.
FG Wilson identified the fact that to deliver
the power requirements of this site, four
1,700 kVA generator sets would be
required.
In concealing the generators in a very
compact space underneath the stadium
seating (level 7), the aesthetics of the
stadium remained intact and prevented the
need to house them externally in a storage
facility, as is often the case.
All air-handling, cooling systems, exhaust
units and switchgear were also concealed
within the envelope of the stadiums
expansive seating racks.
In conjunction with the project architect, the
exhaust system was moulded into
polycarbonate blades of the surface
structure of the stadium meaning no
protrusions or exposure to rainwater. The
exhaust is fitted with its own drainage
system to keep rainwater out.
During stadium events, the generators
operate in parallel with the ESB mains
supply to supplement the stadiums power
demand and also deliver no break standby
power on mains failure.
In order to deliver this control philosophy
FG Wilson designed a fully integrated
control system, based on the Allen Bradley
Hot-standby PLC platform. This delivered a
high level of system redundancy and
greatly increased the operational security of
the stadium.
The timing of the installation of the
generator sets was critical as they needed
to be in situ prior to the fixing of the seating
racks above them. Any delay in the
positioning would have had impacts on the
timeline for the seating construction above.
This part of the project was completed to
schedule so enabling the further smooth
running of the stadium build.
Another challenge overcome by FG Wilson
was noise. The Aviva Stadium is
surrounded by residential properties and
the power product solution had to
guarantee extremely low noise levels. This
was set at 53 dBA at 1m, which is low for
this type of installation, but as the
surrounding area is a highly desirable
residential development, minimal noise was
critical to the overall success of the
scheme.
To ensure noise levels were correct the
generators were set on spring based anti-
vibration pads. This means that there is no
vibration translation to the structure of the
building when the power supply is on as the
generators are effectively isolated from the
structure itself.
Another advantage presented by FG
Wilson is that all external contractors on
site, from burger vans to merchandise
sellers to event crews, can access the
stadiums power supply rather than bringing
their own generators onto the site.
This was not previously possible. The
capacity provided by FG Wilsons
generators is 5.44 MW and at peak usage
the Aviva Stadium uses on average 3.5
MW. The generators have a local 24 hr
hour daily service fuel tank, supplied from a
large bulk fuel storage tank to provide
multiple day 100% load run autonomy.
The power solution presented by FG
Wilson also has an environmental benefit in
the form of a heat recovery facility. From the
jackets surrounding the engines up to 750
kw of heat is recovered from each
machine and used to heat the pitch and
provide other forms of heating around the
stadium.
The installation programme, which took 11
months from tendering to completion, was
completed on time and within budget ahead
of the opening game in August 2010. Since
then, hundreds of football and rugby
matches, concerts and events have taken
place with Madonna having played there
recently to a capacity crowd.
David Blennerhassett, dealer principal at
FG Wilson in Dublin said: This was a very
challenging stadium project which
presented a number of issues from a noise,
space and design perspective. But in
getting to grips with the project from an
early phase and working with the M & E
Consultants throughout the tendering
process we were able to deliver a reliable,
competitive and quality power product that
exceeded all initial expectations. We had a
lot of positive input from the initial stages,
which was instrumental in determining the
final solution.
The Aviva Stadium was an immensely
satisfying project of which we are extremely
proud and as part of our ongoing
maintenance programme we always
ensure that we have a representative on
site every time there is an event taking
place.
FG Wilson product ranges from 6.8 2,500
kVA, including open and enclosed
generator sets providing prime and standby
power from standby domestic use, right
up to power modules with the ability to
operate as complete power stations
supplying electricity to national grids.
Through a global network of 380 Dealers,
FG Wilson serves and supports customers
all over the world. With the backup of FG
Wilsons power solutions team, Dealers can
meet any power requirement, no matter
how complex.

Crossrail at
Canary Wharf
C
anary Wharf will be one of the
largest Crossrail stations. Like the
nearby Canary Wharf Tube station,
the new Crossrail station will be built
in dock water, in this case the North Dock of
West India Quay. The station and proposed
retail and park areas will be six storeys high;
approximately the size of One Canada
Square laid on its side.
Crossrail itself is the new high frequency
railway for London and the South East. When
the service opens in 2018 Crossrail trains will
travel from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the
west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east
via new twin tunnels under central London.
It will connect Canary Wharf with the City of
London, the West End and Heathrow Airport
and provide much needed new transport links
into South East London.
Crossrail adds 10% to the entire London tube
and rail network and brings an extra 1.5 million
people within 45 minutes commute of
Londons key business and shopping districts.
Up to 24 Crossrail trains per hour will run
through Central London at peak times,
carrying an estimated 200 million passengers
in its first year. The estimated benefit of
Crossrail to the UK economy is at least 42
billion
Retail areas are planned for four of the six
storeys along with a landscaped park,
restaurant and community facility on the top
floor. The station will be covered by an
elegant, semi open-air timber lattice roof
allowing views out over the dock, Canary
Wharf and beyond.
The station development will provide a link
between Canary Wharf and Poplar, currently
severed by the North Dock. It also includes
links with the Canary Wharf Estate, via
Adams Place and the Jubilee Line and DLR
Stations.
The station box is being constructed and
designed on behalf of Crossrail by Canary
Wharf Contractors Limited, a wholly owned
subsidiary of Canary Wharf Group plc. It is
being built for a fixed price of 500m, of which
CWG is contributing 150m.
When works are completed the site will be
handed back to Canary Wharf Group to
enable development of office space at North
Quay, which already has planning permission.
Rappell is in charge of all the power
requirements for the project and has been
contracted to provide four 4000A main
switchboards and 23 interim switchboards
with the installation.
In May 2012 Rappell Special Projects was
also involved in a scheme to provide new low
voltage switchboards for the major
redevelopment of Liverpool Street Station,
London. Rappell also provides complete
custom built M.V/ L.V package substation
assemblies as part of its product range.
These involve cast resin transformers up to
4MVA, incorporating medium voltage switch-
ing units, close-coupled to the transformer
housing or stand alone units.
Rappell is currently a leading provider of
industrial switchgear to the UK market.
Founded in 1979 it is currently based in the

ounded as an electrical motor factory
by Ali Metin Kazanci in 1968, Aksa
manufactured its first generator in
1984 and rapidly became known as
an expert in electrical energy supply.
In 1994, Aksa became incorporated under
the name of Kazanci Holding and
reorganised, achieving its current business
structure.
Today, Aksa is well-known for its expertise in
the generating sets market and is among
Turkeys leading 200 industrial companies
and exporters.
Gasoline, diesel, natural gas powered
gensets, marine generating sets, lighting
towers and generating sets hardware are all
made by Aksa, one of the biggest generating
sets manufacturers in the world.
In May 2012,Aksa Power Generation opened
one of the world`s largest gen-set factories, a
100,000 m2 facility based in China.
The new factory produces 24,000 diesel gen-
sets annually. In addition, it has 16 test rooms
which are equipped with the latest technology
and have more than 25 MVA test capacity.
A company spokesman told WIP: Being one
of the first manufacturers of natural gas
generator sets in the world, Aksa Generators
offers a unique background in synchronised
sets.
Aksa Generators has had a key policy of
continuously increasing its many investments
to remain a pioneer of change, says the
company.
It is pledged to make more soundproof,
environment-friendly generators with lower
fuel consumption for the world market.
The company recently received approval to
apply the UL 2200 listing to its gen-sets
following a rigorous product review of the
components used in the manufacturing of
each unit, as well the completed product.
The UL 2200 certificate ensures that the
AKSA Power Generation gen-sets have been
tested and that they conform to health and
safety standards.
Gen-set specifiers, operators and owners
recognise the UL 2200 listing as a sign that the
gen-set system has been formally evaluated
and approved.
Aksa currently offers a number of rental
power gen-sets and different voltages are
available for applications in their home
market, Turkey.
Aksa gen-sets offer quick voltage change to
maximise flexibility and minimise setup, and
are available to supply as stand-alone source
or to be synchronised with other modules or
with the local power utility.
Aksas containerised gen-sets are said to offer
compact and stable structures which are
convenient for transportation and resiting.
Suitable for continuous prime and standby
application, the gen-sets cooling systems
offer reliable operation in ambient
temperatures of up to 50C.
Standard 20 ISO containers features four lift
points and fork lift slots as standard,
accompanied by a side ladder, embedded
doors, hinges and louvres for safer
transportation.
External refuelling points and rain pipes are
available for oil, fuel, and water supply. The
generator set inside is surrounded by anti-skid
safe metal flooring for a safer maintenance.
Additional features include an external fuel
inlet with t-joint to allow easy converting
between internal and external fuel tanks, an
external emergency stop button, an external
visual and audible alarm, remote alarm fire
protection, and an external power cable
outlet.
AKSA Power Generation has also opened
the world`s biggest generator factory in China.
The generator factory has a projected annual
production capacity of 24,000 generator sets
per annum. Aksa has seen an increasing
demand since its first establishment in China
in 2007 and has increased its investments up
to US$50m in China alone.
AKSA Power Generation is among the top
five generator set suppliers in the world and
the new factory is expected to export its prod-
ucts over 1500 countries in the world. Product
range varies from 10kW to 2500Kw.
With its newest factory in Changzhou, AKSA
has become the largest generator set
exporter in China and also has become the

Symmetra PX
for data centres
T
he University of Salford is spending
5.7m on a datacentre upgrade which
will improve student access to shared
applications, storage and virtual
learning environments.
It hopes it can repay its investment by
leasing IT resources to other academic
institutions via shared cloud-based
services.
We are looking at this as a revenue
opportunity a way to repay the big
investment we have made here, said
Salford University CIO Derek Drury.
There is an opportunity for a lot of people
looking at disaster recovery and failover
sites, as well as additional storage and
hosted applications.
Salford hosts almost 20,000 students and
2,500 staff on its campus, with students
also able to access facilities at the
MediaCityUK development at Salford
Quays.
The University had a number of
requirements for world class, redundant
and scalable 3 phase power protection.
Availability was critical for the equipment
being supported, so the University needed
a trusted partner - Datacentre UK.
This company was chosen as it could be
relied upon to work with other contractors
and suppliers to design, supply, implement
and support solutions which meet the
Universitys current and expected needs.
Datacentre UK has provided The
University of Salford with a number of APC
PX Symmetra Solutions located in different
data centres around campus.
The Symmetra PX is a true modular
system made up of dedicated and
redundant modules, power, intelligence,
battery and bypass, all engineered into a
design that is easily and efficiently
serviceable. This architecture can scale
power and runtime as demand grows or as
higher levels of availability are required.
The Symmetra PX is widely-regarded as a
world class, redundant, scalable, power
protection system designed to cost
effectively provide high levels of availability.
Said to seamlessly integrate into today's
state-of-the-art data centre designs, the
Symmetra PX is described as a true
modular system.
Made up of dedicated and redundant
modules - power, intelligence, battery and
bypass - these have been engineered into a
design which is easily and efficiently
serviceable. This architecture can scale
power and runtime as demand grows or as
higher levels of availability are required.
Symmetra PX serves as the core power
train that drives InfraStruXure systems for
small and medium data centres but can
also power individual "zones" of larger data
centers.
Highly manageable, the Symmetra PX
features self-diagnostic capabilities and
standardised modules which mitigate the
risk of human error resulting in increased
overall data center reliability.
Delivered under a 13-month contract with
systems integrator Unisys, the Universitys
data centre upgrade has two objectives: to
help the university cut ongoing costs by
virtualising and centralising 360 servers
and 164 customised applications, and to
provide a second datacentre for disaster
recovery purposes.
There were four content management
system (CMS) and three customer
relationship management system (CRM)
applications in use, and CIO Derek Drury
wanted to make sure everyone was using
the same software.
Security is provided by Novell identity
access management (IAM) tools and
student email accounts are already hosted
with an external cloud provider using the
readily-available web-based Microsoft
Live@Edu communication and
collaboration platform.
We went through a period of low
investment in IT the replacement cycles
were very high and we ended up with 290
servers in the datacentre with another 70
under peoples desks in schools and other
facilities, said Drury.
Now we have a bit of budget to spend, we
have virtualised all of them and there is
further rationalisation of applications. The
second datacentre is a business continuity
thing the new one will be the main facility
with plenty of space for expansion and the
old one used for disaster recovery.
Drury says the upgrade is long overdue,
but that the lack of investment in Salfords
IT infrastructure was not down to lack of
budget, but to the absence of any clear

New EfW plant
for Teeside
T
he UKs latest 50MW Tees Valley
plant, destined to be built at the New
Energy and Technology Business
Park, near Billingham, Teesside, will
be based on advanced gasification EfW
technology.
The Tees Valley plant, claimed to be the first
of its kind in the world, is expected to produce
enough electricity to power up to 50,000
homes.
According to Air Products, the plant is
situated with good access and connectivity to
local and national electrical distribution
infrastructure, and close proximity to landfill
disposal facilities.
Once operational, it will divert up to 350,000
metric tons of non-recyclable waste from
landfill per year.
The plant is expected to create up to 700
construction jobs and more than 50
permanent jobs once operational. Energy
facilitys core conversion technology - a
Westinghouse gasifier supplied by AlterNRG
- this technology has been used successfully
in other countries, such as Japan.
It is said to offer a more efficient, cleaner
conversion of waste to power than traditional
EfW technologies and has the potential to
generate a wider range of products, including
heat, hydrogen, chemicals and fuels.
The technology also produces 42% fewer
CO2 emissions per MWh than incineration.
Longer term, Air Products believes the
potential generation of renewable hydrogen
could be deployed for commercial use, such
as fuelling public transport.
Air Products says it has secured the
necessary environmental and planning
approvals and the renewable energy facility is
scheduled to enter commercial operation in
2014.
The Alter NRG Plasma Gasification System
based on Westinghouse Plasma Corp. (WPC)
technologyhas been designed to provide
users with a syngas tailored to the down-
stream process needs of the customer.
Through WPC, Alter NRG offers four models
of plasma torch systems each designed to
operate over a wide range of power inputs.
This breadth of product offering allows Alter
NRG and WPC to best match the plasma
power requirements to customer applications.
Inside the plasma torch, a plasma stream is
created by the interaction between air (other
gases can also be used) and an electric arc
created between two electrodes.
The interaction of the gas with the electric arc
dissociates the gas into electrons and ions
enabling the gas to become electrically and
thermally conductive. Torches can be turned
up and down to maintain reaction
temperatures as feedstocks with higher and
lower Btu values are processed and/or
feedstocks with higher or lower values of
ash/glass/metals are processed
The key advantages of the Westinghouse
Plasma Gasification Technology are said to
be:
Self-stabilised and non-transferred arc
Operation on many gases - air, oxygen,
nitrogen, etc.
Wide variety of torches available with power
input from 80 kW - 2,400 kW
High thermal efficiency
Plasma torches have no moving parts
resulting in high availability
Torch consumables are quickly replaced
without shutting down the gasifier
Long electrode life
The Alter NRG Plasma Gasifier is said to
provide unmatched flexibility to process a
variety of feedstocks including municipal solid
waste (MSW), industrial waste, biomass,
coal, petroleum coke and tyres, when
compared to most other gasification
technologies.
The APG is a refractory-lined vessel which
stands about 60 feet tall (based on Alters
largest reactor size).
Plasma torches, which provide heat for gasifi-
cation and melting, are located around the
periphery near the bottom of the reactor.
The heat from the torches is used to heat up a
bed of foundry coke. The temperature at the
center of the coke bed very near the plasma
torches is greater than 3,000C.
The temperature at the top and bottom of the
coke bed is approximately 1,650C. Air and/or
oxygen inlets are located just above and
below the top of the coke bed.
After the feedstock is converted to syngas it
exits the top of the reactor at a temperature of
approximately 900-1,000C where it begins
several gas clean-up steps before the syngas
can be converted into various energy
products.
The extreme temperatures within the reactor
ensure that all organic material is converted to
syngas and any material that cannot be
gasified is melted and flows out as molten
slag. Long residence times within the reactor
ensure there is sufficient time to crack any tars
and minimise particulate carryover, a
systemic problem for many other gasification
systems.
www.airproducts.co.uk
Feedstock materials enter the APG through
the feed port which can be located on the side
of the reactor or at the top. The feedstock
either gasifies immediately upon entering the
reactor or falls onto the coke bed where com-
plete gasification occurs.
APG benefits include:
Feedstock flexibility operation at ambient
pressure and high temperature (greater than
5,000C/10,000oF) from plasma results in:
Ability to use heterogeneous feedstocks such
as MSW
Ability to mix feedstocks like MSW, tires and

Protection
against pole slip
T
he power industry has experienced
swift changes over the last few years;
the most obvious is the move towards
larger number of smaller
decentralised power sources, which impose
higher demand on the grid stability.
As result, the network operator requirements
on functionality and performance of protection
devices have become more demanding - and
requirements are still increasing.
To avoid any dangerous situations, like the
vast rolling black-out which happened in the
US in 2003, generator operators have been
required to embed protection against pole slip
and prevent the grid from island non-
synchronous operation.
If the load mismatch becomes extreme, one
generator could slip 2pi of phase relative to
the other. In the industry this is called pole slip.
Pole slip is a specific phenomenon, caused
either by low excitation, a faulty regulator or
abrupt changes of load within the mains. This
puts severe mechanical stress on the
machine, putting windings at risk, shaft
damage or affecting the normal operation of
control systems.
Moreover, the simultaneous very high
currents can be thermally very devastating
and lead to complete generator destruction
and massive instability to the grid.
Conventional protection, such as overcurrent,
vector shift or ROCOF, is not sufficient
because it is not fast and reliable enough
especially if oscillations - caused by large load
jumps - develop.
The innovative patent-pending solution for
pole slip protection from ComAp, the Czech
generator and engine control manufacturer,
strengthens the overall protection of
synchronous generators, meets current
legislation and provides improved peace of
mind. ComAps solution prevents
unnecessary damage to embedded power
systems, both large and small.
This brand-new technology predicts eminent
pole slip occurrence in time to minimise the
destructive effects of lost synchronism without
any complicated settings.
ComAp delivers solutions for its customers in
the UK, where pole slip protection might
be required by the utilities on all the STOR
(Short Term Operating Reserve) type projects
for gen-sets.
ComAp pole slip protection is currently fitted
in following products: InteliPro, InteliGen NT
BaseBox, InteliGen NTC BaseBox and
InteliSys NT BaseBox.

Retrofit upgrade
for R-R turbines
S
cott DeWolfe, Rolls-Royce, RB211
Product Director Energy, told
UKPN: The RB211 is the most
reliable and easily maintained
industrial gas turbine available in its class
today.
The new RB211-Gzero delivers an
additional ten per cent more power that will be
critical to boosting performance and
profitability for our customers in the global
power generation and oil & gas sectors.
Engineered as a modular package for ease of
maintenance, the RB211-Gzero product will
specifically benefit operators of the 440-plus
worldwide installed fleet of RB211-C and
RB211G variant gas generators that feature
RT-56 or RT-62 power turbines.
The RB211-Gzero power increase is
achieved during routine gas turbine overhaul
by retrofitting applicable RB211 units with a
modular package that increases the flow of air
through the engine.
This move increases power availability at ISO
conditions by 10% for the RB211-G, and up to
31% for the RB211-C, depending on existing
package configuration.
This simple retrofit approach requires minimal
modification to the existing gas turbine and
also ensures that oil & gas production and
power generation facility down-time is kept to
a minimum.
With over 700 units sold, recording over 30
million operating hours, the industrial RB211
gas turbine is available in a power range of 29
to 44MW and provides an ideal solution for
onshore and offshore oil & gas and power
generation applications.
For global oil & gas mechanical drive and
power generation applications, Rolls-Royce
RB211 gas turbine systems have earned a
market leading reputation as the most reliable
and efficient in their class.
Available from 37,465 to 45,316 horsepower
at ISO conditions, more than 700 units have
been sold, recording over 30 million operating
hours.
The RB211-Gzero retrofit upgrade provides
existing users of industrial RB211-C and
RB211-G gas generators, utilising RT-56 and
RT-62 power turbines, with a nominal 10%
power increase depending on ambient
temperature.
The RB211-Gzero upgrade further enhances
the productivity and customer value of these
reliable units. The RB211-Gzero upgrade can
be easily achieved with minimal modification
to the existing package design during routine
unit overhaul.
This cost-effective and simple retrofit
approach ensures facility down-time is min-
imised, while performance, power and opera-
tor profitability are optimised.
The industrial RB211 has been refined
through in-field experience, including remote
and offshore operations where availability and
rugged reliability are of crucial importance.
Rolls-Royce has a proven track-record of
applying systematic product enhancement
and upgrade improvements to increase
power output and enhance the efficiency and
emissions performance of equipment for
owner operators.
The first RB211 gas turbine went into service
in 1974, rated at 26,418 horsepower. Year on
year the Rolls-Royce team of expert design
and field-service engineers has applied fleet
performance data insights from operating
hours accumulated in the field to drive
continuous RB211 unit performance
improvements.
These have included power and efficiency
upgrades and improvements such as the
RB211-GT, RB211-H63 and now the RB211-
Gzero.
RB211-Gzero is a power enhancement pro-
gramme particularly relevant to operators of
the 440-plus worldwide installed fleet of
RB211-C and -G gas generators with RT-56
or RT-62 power turbines.
The programme offers operators an
upgraded version of the RB211-G gas gener-
ator which, when harnessed to a power tur-
bine, delivers enhanced prime mover power
capacity.
The RB211-Gzero gas generator upgrade is
achieved with increased air flow featuring
zero-staging, partial re-blading of the
intermediate pressure compressor and
upgrading of the inlet vane of the power tur-
bine to suit the higher flow.
For existing RB211-C engines, the
conversion, easily made during the overhaul
cycle in one of the Rolls-Royce approved
repair and overhaul bases worldwide,
combines the existing C-to-G turbine refit with
the RB211-Gzero compressor upgrade to
create the RB211-Gzero gas generator.
The new RB211-Gzero engine is
interchangeable with the current -G engine,
with similar dimensions and interfaces.
Ease of gas generator refit is a key element
of the upgrade alongside minimal package
alteration to ensure a cost-effective
modification in the field with minimal down-
time.
www.rolls-royce.com
Technical benefits
The RB211-Gzero upgrade focusses on two
of the five RB211 modules: air intake and
intermediate pressure compressor. The
remaining three modules remain unchanged
and are taken from the donor engine during
retrofit.
Module 1, the air intake casing, has been
redesigned and shortened to ensure identical
engine interface length is maintained, com-
pensating for the increased length of module
2, the intermediate pressure compressor. A
redesigned elliptically-profiled nose bullet
extends further forward in the air stream and
achieves ideal airflow entry to the compressor.
Core elements of the upgrade focus on the
intermediate pressure compressor module.
Here the existing stage one disc and blade
row is removed and replaced with a new stage
zero and stage one discs and blade assembly,
designed to mate with the existing stage two-

Have ski-mask
will travel?
I
n the summer of 2012 delegates from
foreign companies visited the UK with the
idea of forging relationships with British
companies to help them rebuild industries
in their own particular country.
One such meeting, with a subsequent factory
visit, involved the Advanced Diesel
Engineering (ADE) premises in Yorkshire -
proved to be a great success.
The foreign company involved was more
interested in dealing with ADE than anyone
else - and a good relationship developed to
the point where I agreed to visit them abroad,
sign contracts and set up an operation.
Warning advice from the UK Foreign Office
meant I could not fly directly from the UK to
this particular destination, making the journey
slightly more convoluted for me, as I had to
travel via Rome.
My day began with the 6.30am red eye flight
out of Heathrow, though I arrived at the
longstay car park at around 4.00am suffering
from the Hangover from Hell (a consequence
of a business meeting the night before).
The changeover of planes at Rome airport
was very smooth and within a reasonably
short time I was on my way to my final
destination.
Fifteen minutes before we were due to land
the Captain advised us that there would be a
short delay and we would be circling for 45
minutes. I found out later this was due to army
tanks on the runway my day was getting
better by the minute. We made a fairly bumpy
landing. Alarm bells start ringing when I saw
there were no other planes on the ground
apart from military aircraft.
I passed through security and passport
control with no problems as our prospective
dealer had arranged an armed guard to escort
me to the exterior of the airport.
At this point I met the client with his two
associates; we then made our way to his 4 x 4
GMC truck. He took great pride in explaining
the vehicles capabilities - it was built to
withstand a hit from a small rocket launcher
and the tyres wrere designed to run for 35 km
even when shot out and on rims only!
This is just the type of information you really
do not want to hear when you are a few
thousand miles from home.
On settling into the armoured vehicle we set
off at a steady pace. The surroundings could
only be described as war-ravaged.
Buildings had been bombed or bullet-ridden
and everybody on the streets seemed to be
carrying guns. My client, who I am going to
call Ali, advised me that I would not be
staying in conventional hotels while on my
visit but at what he termed safe houses.
After about one hours travelling we arrived at
the safe house which was like a big old
country house.
Forget Chatsworth - this version was
surrounded by breezeblock walls topped with
razorwire, with large, steel entrance gates.
The gates were manned by armed personnel
in combat gear - it required a telephone call in
order to allow us entry.
While the house was quite spectacular, the
landscape remained the same - bombed-out
and like a warzone.
Ali gave me a tour of the house which
included an underground swimming pool
complete with a bar in the corner. The house
also held a fully equipped nightclub decorated
with lavish furnishings, big enough to serve
150 people, .
Our communal sleeping quarters consisted of
a large, open area furnished with wall-
hugging palatial lounge furniture. On the first
night the six people on this venture slept here.
There was ample food and alcohol to keep
everyone happy and the night passed quietly
enough - with just the odd burst of gunfire to
be heard in the distance.
The following morning we left to visit the
offices and showrooms in the town centre.
What is truly remarkable about these kinds of
places is their ability to switch-off from the
sporadic gunfire and bombing and continue
with their daily business when there is a
virtual civil war going on.
After two days of fairly intense negotiations
the deal was almost finalised - apart from one
other trip. This was to visit the main
showrooms and factories; however this was
located where much of the civil unrest was
taking place.
The journey took five hours by car, passing
through some beautiful countryside, quaint
little villages and also some very damaged
areas.
Vehicles could be seen abandoned
everywhere along the route most of them
stripped bare and lacking wheels.
We passed several roadblocks manned by
civilians dressed in combat fatigues; they
were wearing the type of ski-masks which are
typically associated with guerrilla warfare.
Most of these roadblocks we passed through
uneventfully, thanks to an exchange of
money, until the final block which provided
entry to the city.
Several of these bandits were not wearing
ski masks and a particularly large member of
the group started to approach our vehicle with
a machinegun slung over one shoulder and a
cigarette dangling from his lips.
A minor confrontation ensued - a mixture of
Tarantino and Jack Reacher - needless to say
I am glad I proved to be on the winning side.
I was now nearing the conclusion of this
unusual trip. We entered the city and then
drove down many little side roads filled with
war-torn, derelict buildings.
Ali advised me we were at the next safe
house. This was when I became extremely
nervous and wondered why I had ever taken
up this profession of travelling and not settled
for a nice 9-to-5 office job in the UK?
The house was three-storeys high and right
outside the entrance door on the street was a
totally burned-out BMW.
You could only identify it by the shape of the
bodyshell as nothing else remained. I asked
about this - and Ali advised me that it was one
of his vehicles which had been attacked two
weeks earlier.
We stayed at this safe house for two days
but unfortunately were unable to visit the other
showrooms and offices due to the unrest.
On my final day Ali and his associates drove
me the long way round, keeping the sea and
some lovely beaches in view.
The coastal scenery was breathtaking and it
was hard to believe that elsewhere the
countrys cities had been ravaged by war.
I duly got back in to Heathrow Airport at 20.00
on a Saturday night, raining, cold and on the
way home. The M4 was closed between
Junction 18 and 20 which meant a 30 mile
detour for me. Nothing ever changes in Britain
- thankfully.

n July 2012, British physicists at CERN,
the renowned Science Centre for Particle
Physics based in Geneva, home of the
Large Hadron Collider, announced the
discovery of the obscure - but profoundly
important - Higgs boson, the particle which
sparked the greatest hunt in modern science.
As the investigations continue, CERN has
placed an order with Oerlikon Leybold
Vacuum for the delivery of over 50 mobile leak
detection systems (the PHOENIX L300),
which include the matching Remote Control
System (RC 310 WL).
Dr. Martin Fllenbach, CEO Oerlikon Leybold
Vacuum, told UKPN: "This is one of the largest
orders for leak detection systems of one single
customer in the applications within the branch
of R&D. We are pleased that CERN continues
to regard us as an important partner in their
pioneering research."
For the applications of the CERN institute, the
technical requirements on vacuum systems,
such as quality, reliability and stability are very
high.
For decades, Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum has
been a technology partner of the Geneva insti-
tute and has delivered several vacuum sys-
tems and components.
According to British scientists at the LHC, it is
imperative to maintain a pure, ultrahigh
vacuum continuously in the underground
pipeline.
The helium leak detection at CERN is
aeesential. If the scarce and expensive noble
gas escapes from the storage ring, no more
experiments can be performed, as the
temperature in the system needs to be kept
constant using helium at -271.3C.
Only under these conditions the particles will
travel at the speed of light and finally collide.
The head of CERN's Group of vacuum,
surface and coating technology, Dr. Jos
Miguel Jimenez commented: "Oerlikon
Leybold Vacuum is one of the few technology
suppliers who meet the extreme requirements
of CERN high energy particle accelerators in
terms of vacuum and leak detection systems.
We can rely 100% on solutions from Oerlikon
Leybold Vacuum."
In addition to the particle accelerator at
CERN, the leak detectors are used in leak
testing of the large ATLAS detector, the CMS
(Compact Muon Spectrometer) and individual
components which are used for antimatter
research.
Vacuum leak detection is typically used for
the particle beam vacuum, and for the
reception testing of vacuum insulation. For
identifying major leaks, however, the sniff test
method is used.
Both leak detection methods are possible
when using Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum leak
detectors. Conclusion: Leak detection is an
integral solution and fully complementary to
achieve and maintain the high vacuum in
technically complex systems.
In this context, the compact leak detector
PHOENIXL300 of Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum
convinces with its features and flexible
deployment. A deep detectable leak rate (<= 5
x 10 -12 mbar x l/Sec.) and the ability to oper-
ate the mobile device in a partial flow system,
provide reliable and consistently reproducible
results in such demanding applications.
The quick start and the extremely short reac-
tion times in leak detection measurements
provide customer friendly operation of the
leak detector.
In addition, users control the device with the
Remote Control System RC 310 WL via
graphic touch panel, data storage and USB
port, from a distance of up to 100 meters from
the measuring point.
Another plus: Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum
offers training programs for the full range of
leak detection applications also onsite.
Franois Duval, head of the EN/EL group,
which is responsible for CERN's electrical
installations told UKPN: "We take advantage
of every technical stop to replace UPS
batteries which kick in when the main power
supply fails and provide emergency power for
at least a few minutes," explains Duval.
"Various projects are currently under study at
CERN, such as recovering the energy
released into the air by the accelerators'
cooling towers. For our part, we only install
transformers with high-tech materials
nowadays, in order to keep energy losses to
the minimum," concludes Duval.
"Our network is very dense and complex," he
says. It has evolved to meet CERN's
growing energy needs over the years without
any real overall plan. With 1,000 high-voltage
circuit-breakers - about twice the number of
the SIG network - it's not necessarily the
optimum set-up you'd design and build today."
Oerlikon CEO Michael Buscher had the last
word: "The success of this tender
demonstrates once again that the
technologically-advanced solutions we offer
are essential for research applications. We
are proud to support CERN in answering the
basic questions of physics now and in the
future."

District energy is
key for Cofely
A
new 3.2 MW CHP engine at the
University of Leicester will provide
heating and hot water to several city
council buildings as well as a prison.
More than 3,000 council houses are also
covered.
Laying out the 7 km of pipework to connect
these buildings for the scheme took about
18 months.
Cofely has completed the first phase of the
Leicester district-energy scheme serving
thousands of homes, as well as council-
owned and other buildings. The scheme
uses a combination of over 5 MW of gas-
fired CHP and upgraded biomass boilers,
which will help reduce carbon emissions by
around 12 000 t a year by 2012, rising to
over 20 000 t a year by 2020.
This scheme is a 25-year partnership
between Leicester City Council and Cofely
District Energy. It covers six city estates and
is said to be the largest system of its kind in
the UK installed in one phase.
Work to lay the 7 km of pipework took about
18 months and was completed five weeks
ahead of schedule, reports the company in
a recent release..
Included in the scheme is a new 3.2 MW
CHP engine at the University of Leicester. It
will provide heating to several city-council
buildings, including De Montfort Hall, the
Town Hall, Moat Community College and
Leicester Central Library. It will also provide
heat to HMP Leicester.
Simon Woodward, chief executive of
Cofely District Energy, said: The Leicester
district energy scheme is one of the largest
projects of its kind in the UK to be
constructed in the UK and has been
completed ahead of schedule and on
budget.
He continues: Now fully operational, the
scheme will stand as an example of what
can be achieved with the vision and
ambition that Leicester City Council has
shown.
Grant Charman, deputy director of estates
at Leicester University, commented: We
have a sector-leading carbon-reduction
target (60% by 2020), and the district-
energy scheme will help the university to
make the first big reductions against this
target.
Cofeley is probably best-known for its
involvement with Londons Energy Centre
in the Olympic Park. This is a facility owned
and managed by Cofely which provides a
combined energy output of over 500 GWh a
year.The district-energy infrastructure
owned and managed by Cofely and which
now has the capacity to deliver over 500
GWh a year, following recent additions to
the companys portfolio - including
extensions to the Birmingham and
Leicester schemes.
The news comes at a time when the
Department for Energy & Climate Change
is promoting district heating as the low-
carbon energy solution for urban areas as
part of its heat-strategy framework.
The 500 GWh is the total of heating and
electrical power from schemes based on
CHP.
Simon Woodward explains: The UK
District Energy Association reports that
over 14% of the UKs heating needs could
be met using low-carbon district-heating
sources within the next 20 years.
With schemes in Birmingham, Leicester,
Greenwich, Olympic Park and Stratford
City, Whitehall in London, Manchester and
Southampton, Cofely District Energy is
uniquely placed to help the UK reach its
substantial potential in this market and
deliver a significant proportion of this
target.
Cofelys low-carbon district- energy
schemes use CHP to generate hot water
and electricity. Some schemes use heat
from the CHP in Summer to produce chilled
water from absorption chillers.
In 2010 Cofely designed, installed and
commissioned a trigeneration system and
energy centre for MediaCityUK on Salfords
historic docks.
The scheme subsequently won the
industrial and commercial award from the
Combined Heat & Power Association.
MediaCityUK is described as a new
community for the creative and digital
industries. Anchor tenants include the BBC
and the University of Salford.
Trigeneration CHP was the first phase of a
special initiative by MediaCityUK. This first
phase covers more 15 ha. Its energy centre
includes a 2 MW CHP unit fuelled by
gas/biofuel. During the Summer, heat
drives a 1.5 MW absorption chiller
designed to meet 20% of the cooling load
and is supplemented by chillers in the
individual buildings.
The CHP unit reduces carbon emissions
by 29% compared with conventional
methods, with predicted energy-cost
savings of around 560,000 a year.

Cogeneration for
Bradford 2016
P
ennine Resource Recovery (PRR), a
consortium of companies comprising
Skanska, AECOM and FCC
Environment, is Bradford and
Calderdale councils preferred partner in a
project to change the way waste is managed
across the two districts.
In fact, the way waste is managed in
Bradford and Calderdale is set to improve
radically. In future the focus will be on recover-
ing value from the waste produced in the area,
and from the resources that are locked up in it.
The project will be undertaken as a 50/50
engineering, procurement and construction
joint venture between Skanska and AECOM
with FCC Environment operating the facility
on completion.
The facility will receive up to 190,000 tonnes
per year of Bradford and Calderdales
household waste, mechanically extracting
valuable recyclable materials before using the
remainder to generate up to 18MW of
electricity.
In doing so, the facility will divert over 90% of
Bradford and Calderdales waste away from
landfill each year and generate enough
electricity to power the equivalent of 20,000
homes.
Mark Tribe, Project Director, adds: We are
pleased that the PRR consortium can
contribute and apply its global expertise in
engineering advanced waste treatment
facilities to help successfully deliver Bradford
and Calderdales Resource Recovery Facility.
We are confident that this experienced and
capable joint venture team will deliver a
sustainable solution which assists the
Bradford and Calderdale Waste Partnership in
meeting its combined targets for waste
diversion, recycling and energy production.
PRRs aim is to deliver sustainable waste
management which will reduce the carbon
impact of waste disposal services by minimis-
ing waste to landfill, boosting recycling and
generating low carbon energy.
Rather than sending Bradford and
Calderdales residual household waste (that
is, waste left over after recycling) to unsustain-
able and expensive landfill sites, PRR propos-
es to send this material to a new, modern
Resource Recovery Facility at Bowling Back
Lane, Bradford.
Here, materials will be recycled and the
residual household waste (commonly known
as 'black bag' waste) will be used to generate
heat and electricity.
Bradford Council, as the Local Planning
Authority, unanimously approved plans for the
Resource Recovery Facility in November
2012. Work is expected to begin early in 2013
with the facility operational by April 2016.
Sending rubbish to landfill is wasteful and is
becoming increasingly expensive. In
recognition of this, the EU and UK
governments have brought in targets to
reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
If councils such as Bradford and Calderdale
dont meet these targets, they face financial
penalties.
By helping residents in Bradford and
Calderdale to increase their recycling levels to
at least 50% by 2020 and by diverting more
than 90% of all household waste from landfill,
PRR will help to reduce the financial burden of
managing waste, help to reduce the regions
impact on climate change and reduce overall
dependency on fossil fuel derived energy.
Waste delivered to the proposed RRF will be
deposited in an enclosed waste reception
hall.
The waste will then be sorted using
mechanical processing involving magnets,
infra-red equipment and separators in the
Mechanical Recycling Plant. Recyclables
such as paper, plastic, metals and glass will
be extracted for re-use elsewhere.
Once recyclables have been recovered, the
remaining waste will pass into the Energy
Recovery Plant where it is treated using
tightly controlled thermal combustion
technology.
The heat produced is used to generate steam
which travels through a turbine to generate
electricity. Subject to further feasibility studies,
this steam could be used to provide a local
source of heat.
Cogeneration practices like this have been
implemented in some of the earliest
installations of electrical generation.
Before central stations distributed power,
industries generating their own power used
exhaust steam for process heating. Large
office and apartment buildings, hotels and
stores commonly generated their own power
and used waste steam for building heat.

B
eing at the heart of the UK's and
Continental Europe's cross-Channel
transport network and one of the
busiest RORO terminals in the world,
the Port of Dover needs a secure source of
power.
With the reported imminent closure of some
of Britains nuclear power stations, plus the
increasing demand for electricity, the Port of
Dover engineers decided that they had a
resource onsite which could be used to make
their embedded generation more robust and
help with the forecasted national power
shortage.
The Eastern Docks currently has 15 standby
generators each supporting many of the
buildings on the site.
Working together with Turner EPS, the site
engineers are upgrading six of the existing
generators and installing two new ones;
Cummins VTA28G5 producing 1000 kVA and
a Cummins QST30G4 producing 630 kVA.
Some of the older generators are being
removed or relocated which, in conjunction
with some cable and protection modifications
to the HV and LV networks, will allow the
whole site to be supported by remaining 13
generators.
The scheme will involve Turner EPS installing
a Master Central Control system which will
allow the eight upgraded generators to
synchronise with the National Grid to enable
power to be exported from the site.
Additional fuel storage capacity has been
added so that the Port can run fully-supported
on generators for up to three days without fuel
deliveries.
The centrally-located Command HMI is linked
to each generator via a fibre optic cable for
communicating between the individual
generators, allowing them to be started,
stopped and monitored remotely.
Working together with Turner EPS, the Port
of Dover and npowers SmartSTOR scheme
provided in conjunction with Flexitricity, eight
of the generators will be taking part in the
National Grids STOR (Short Term Operating
Reserve) scheme.
Flexitricity will monitor the overall state of the
generator system from its base in Edinburgh
and will call on the site to run the generators to
export power to the National Grid at times of
high demand.
Providing this facility will require the
generators to run for around 50-80 hours per
annum. The Port of Dover standby generators
will be capable of exporting over 2MW of
power to the Grid, in addition to supporting the
site load for the Eastern Docks.
As well as improving electricity supply
security for the site, the scheme has other
benefits associated with the ability to export to
the Grid.
Standby generators need to be run regularly
on load to ensure that they are capable of
providing reliable emergency power.
Generators which are only tested off load
have an increased likelihood of failure when
they are needed most.
When called to run, the generators taking part
in the STOR scheme will run at or close to full
load, increasing their standby reliability.
Being part of a network of small, controllable
generators, a low-carbon source of balancing
electricity demand is created. This is able to
respond to variations in wind, wave, tidal and
solar generation, contributing to the wider
adoption of renewable energy.
Flexitricity states that every megawatt of
capacity connected to its smart grid is a
megawatt that does not have to be held in
reserve elsewhere.
This reduces the need to keep coal and oil
stations on hot standby or running inefficiently
at part load which can reduce emissions by
between 300 - 700 tonnes of CO2 per annum
for each megawatt provided.

hen crane drivers have only one or two speeds for lifting and
lowering available, the current peaks and numerous
changeovers can lead to wear and tear and high energy consumption.
Such a situation requires stepless and adjustable hoisting speeds.
They provide better operating comfort, increase productivity and the
cranes service life even as they reduce energy consumption. There
is, however, one problem: conventional frequency converters require
an elaborate equipping of the crane leading to high investment costs.
To overcome it, Konecranes has developed two converters with
ASR (Adaptive Speed Range/Adaptive hoisting speed) and ESR
(Extended Speed Range/Extended hoisting speed) which enable
advanced solutions for stepless adjustment of the hoisting speed.
The convenient ASR technology provides stepless control of the
hoisting speed in the ratio of 10:1. Owing to the optimized model
sizes of the components, the ASR technology does not require any
elaborate electrical equipping of the crane. The speed with full load
automatically touches a third of the maximum speed with empty
hooks. The hoisting speed with empty hook, on the other hand, is
50% faster than with two-speed hoisting.
The ESR technology offers extremely fast hoisting speeds using
more powerful engines and providing an extended speed range of up
to 37:1. When operating with the maximum load, the hoisting speed
with ESR is automatically two thirds of the maximum hoisting
speed. However, hoisting speed with empty hook is 50% faster than
with traditional frequency converter.
ASR technology: The adaptive hoisting speed is mainly for cranes
and hoisting units that usually lift small or medium loads and
occasionally maximum loads. The experience shows that most hoist
units are usually loaded with light weights. Owing to quicker speeds
in empty hooks and partial load, ASR hoist converters offer higher
productivity, safety and service life for these applications (see Info
graphic 1/ASR). Owing to the converter technology in the hoist unit,
the CXT wire rope hoists with ASR technology are also suitable for
a quick and easy modernization of existing crane systems.

The Kohler/Lombardini group has been updating its range of air-
cooled, single cylinder diesel engines. The new KD15-440 engine
has improved performance, reduced maintenance costs and
increased ease of use for the operator.
The new KD15-440 air-cooled single cylinder engine, with
a displacement of 441 ccs, is becoming the "best in class" within
its power range, reports the company.. Benefiting from its innova-
tive air filter and tank, the KD15 model can provide the operator
with the longest time between maintenance intervals. However,
when required, the task to replace the filter cartridge is simplicity
itself.
The longevity of the new air filter has proven to be five times
greater than the current version.
This result has been achieved
thanks to a high efficiency
separator with pre-filter and an
accumulated-dust drain valve in the
filter itself. Furthermore, the
increased dimensions of the
cartridge and the high filtration
capacity of the paper element
greatly enhances the engine
protection, resulting in a key
reduction in maintenance costs,

50 JANUARY FEBRUARY 2013 UK POWER NEWS
T
he UKs Combined Heat and Power
Association (CHPA) is poised to
resolve rising concern over the absence
of customer regulation in Britains
booming district energy sector.
Heat supply is unregulated, unlike
electricity and gas, and this poses a risk
to district heatings image, CHPA Deputy
Director, Ian Manders, commented on
February 1st, 2013:
Before district heating gets much
bigger in the UK there needs to some
form of self-regulation in terms of how
domestic customers are treated, to mirror
the rights of customers of the regulated
utilities.
He continues: By the end of the year
our focus is on creating a UK residential
heat customer protection scheme with
independent governance.
He concludes: In addition, a good
service to a customer is only as good as
the performance of the system, so it may
be helpful at some point to consider
minimum district heating performance
guidelines. We are interested in outcomes
for the consumer, rather than specifying
technology used in the heat supply
network.
While the UKs district energy sector has
recently seen calls for technical standards
and speculation these could be over-
restrictive the CHPA is concentrating
on residential customer protection, he
said.
CIBSE: New edition of AM12
Combined Heat and Power
for Buildings now available
The CIBSE is pleased to announce the
availability of a new edition for 2013 of
the CIBSE Applications Manual -
AM12 Combined Heat and Power for
Buildings.
This revised and updated edition has
been produced in the recognition of the
role that Combined Heat and Power
(CHP) can play in delivering low carbon
buildings. The comprehensive Guide
features new chapters on District Heating
(DH) applications, information for
assessing environmental benefits and
more detail on tri-generation (cooling,
heating and power - CCHP) and thermal
storage. CHP and DH can offer a more
energy efficient way of generating power
and be cost-effective to implement in
many applications.
CHP produces both electric or shaft
power and thermal energy onsite or near
site, converting as much as 85% of the
input fuel into useful energy.
Used appropriately, CHP therefore
increases resource energy efficiency and
helps reduce CO2 emissions.
CHP systems can also improve power
reliability by reducing or eliminating a
building's dependence on the electric
power grid.
This Guide will help inform industry pro-
