PERITONEAL ANATOMY

ABDOMINAL CAVITY LIMITS SUPERIOR =DIAPHRAM INFIRIOR = PLANE OF PELIVIC BRIM (DASHED RED) ANTERIOR = ABDOMINAL MUSCLES LATERAL= (AWAY FORM THE MID LINE) POSTERIOR = PSTERIAIR ABDOMEN

THE PERITONEUM The peritoneal membrane is a semi-permeable membrane that lines the abdominal wall (parietal peritoneum/has no contact with organs ) and covers the abdominal organs (visceral peritoneum/ covers the organs) The peritoneum secretes serous fluid which lubricates the lining allows organs to move smoothly and move freely this is very important for the visceral peritoneum Both the parietal and visceral layers are continuous layers The peritoneal cavity is located between both the layers and contains no organs the only thing it contains is a thin film of serous fluid, in males this is closed but in females it has an open to the exterior of the fallopian tubes

Mesentery

Mesenteries The mesentery is a double fold of the peritoneum. True mesenteries all connect to the posterior peritoneal wall. The double fold then causes an elongation and forms a tube like connection, the function of a mesentery is to provide blood, nutrients and nervous connections to all the organs and to reach all parts of the intestines

Loss of a dorsal mesentery

The functions of the peritoneum are to: anchor the ongans in place and prevent any drastic movement protect the organs from and leakage or deris alow frictionless movement facilitate enlargement of the intestines contain mast cell with are ascociate with an immune responce as it contains histamines

Peritoneal formations

Omenta/ Omentum Folds of peritoneum that extends from stomach to adjacent organs Greater Omentum Four-layered fold of peritoneum, the anterior two layers descend from the greater curvature of stomach and superior part of duodenum and hangs down like an apron in front of coils of small intestine, and then turns upward and attaches to the transverse colon Greater omenta

the greater Omentum attaches to

The gastrocolic ligament ( ligament between the stomach and the colon) The gastrosplenic ligaments ( ligaments which attach between the stomach and the spleen) The gastrophrenic ligament (ligaments which attach between the stomach and the diaphragm) Lesser omentum two layered fold of peritoneum which extends from porta hepatis to lesser curvature of stomach and superior part of duodenum Hepatogastric ligament extends from porta hepatis to lesser curvature of stomach

Hepatoduodenal ligament Extends from porta hepatis to superior part of duodenum Contains common bile duct, proper hepatic a. and hepatic portal vein .

Lesser Omentum
