Buffel Grass Removal Day February 9, 2013 was a great success Over 30 bags of buffelgrass was collected by 5 enthusiastic volunteers! Thank you to Caroline from Tucson Clean & Beautiful for organizing the event, to Yolanda Herrera for representing SNA and to the volunteers from Summit Hut. Traffic and Streets maintenance picked up ALL the bags. Thank you ALL ! Dump Day on the Weekend of February 16th was a success. Thanks to the Habitat for Humanity, Ward 1 and Environmental Services. 4 roll-offs were supplied and open for residents who wanted to clean their homes and yards due to code violations. All four bins were filled. The weight of the bins were: 3340, 4520, 3620, 4680 lbs. That is a lot of trash ! February 16, 2013 I would also like to thank all who helped us celebrate the Year of the Snake in the Peace Garden.
Chopsticks donated the delicious food that the children enjoyed tremendously. West District Parks & Rec picked up all the trash bags and to all the volunteers who came and helped with the clean up of the peace garden. Thank you ~Beki
Recycle question of the month: What other things can I take back to recycle at the grocery store with my plastic bags? Answer: Plastic bags that the newspaper comes in dry cleaning bags bread bags produce bags toilet paper, napkin, and paper towel wraps furniture wrap electronic wrap plastic retail bags (hard plastic and string handles removed) grocery bag zip lock bags (remove hard components) plastic cereal box liners (if it tears like paper do not include) Tyvek(no glue, labels, other material) diaper wrap (packaging) plastic shipping envelopes (no bubble wrap/remove labels) case wrap (e.g., snacks, water bottles) All clean, dry bags labeled #2 or #4.
Peace Garden Work Days 5901 S Fiesta March 2, 2013 10:00 to 2:00 p.m. garden Come help in the garden and then work on and Bike Maintenance. March 16th the Peace Garden will be cancelled due to the Peace Conference. The 2nd Annual Peace Conference will be March 16th at Doolen Middle School located at 2400 N Country Club. Hispanic Neighborhoods & Access to Healthy Food The National Council of La Raza recently published a factsheet titled, The Food Environment and Latinos Access to Healthy Foods, as part of their 2010 Profiles of Latino Health. In the factsheet, NCLR summarizes recent research on Hispanic families access to healthy foods, finding:
Hispanic families are less likely than nonHispanic White families to live in neighborhoods where healthy food is available and sold at affordable prices. For Latinos living in neighborhoods where affordable, healthy food is scarce, families may have difficulty obtaining transportation to obtain
