The electronic system you will set up in this experiment is shown in Fig. 6-8. The 74147 encoder translates from decimal to 8421 BCD code. The BCD code appears in binary form on the LED indicator lamps (D, C, B, and A). The 7447 decoder translates the BCD code to the seven-segment code that appears on the digital readout. Pay special attention to the eleven 150 ohm limiting resistors in Fig. 6-8. These are essential so as not to burn out any of the expensive LEDs. Also notice that both the keyboard and seven-segment LED display have only one power connection. The keyboard has only a GND or common connection. The + 5-V connection to the keyboard is made through the 74147 encoder. The seven-segment LED display has only a + 5-V (Vcc) connection. The GND connection to the display is made through the 7447 decoder. Notice also the small inverter bubbles at the output of the 74147 encoder. The 7404 inverters change these inverted outputs to regular BCD code. The interfacing of the keyboard to the 74147 TTL encoder in Fig. 6-8 could be improved. Technically, nine pull-up resistors should connect each encoder input to +5 V. In this noncritical design, the pull-up resistors were left out for simplicity. The inputs to the TTL encoder in Fig. 6-8 float HIGH.

PROCEDURE
seven-segment LED display near the 7447 IC. Locate the keyboard near the 74147 IC. 2. Power OFF. Connect power (Vcc and GND) to the 7404, 7447, and 74147 ICs. Connect +5 V (Vcc) only to the anode of the seven-segment LED display. Connect GND only to the common (GND) of the keyboard. 3. Wire the circuit in Fig. 6-8. Use extra caution to make sure all 150ohm limiting resistors are in place. Use spaghetti (insulating tubing) on bare resistor leads so they cannot short out. 4. Power ON. The LED indicator lamps D, C, B, and A should not be lit. The seven-segment LED display should read 0. 5. Press each of the keyboard input switches (0 to 9), and record the results in Table 6-2. Be especially careful about the code used on the sevensegment code section of the table. 6. Power OFF. Take down the circuit and return all equipment to its proper place.
