aboutwhattodoandgivenmanyoftheirrecentmovesitappears
theywillbereachingfarbeyondtheirnormalmarketsectors.
Todayitamazesmeatthemanyconferencesandmediaevents
thatIattend,whensomanyIirmsareconcernedwithbrand
buildingandbrandequity,whyarewestillseeingsomany
techno-slogansthatblurthevaluepropositionofthebrand?Why
spendmoneyontaglinetrivialitiesthatconfusecustomersrather
thanintrigueorprovokethem?Brandequitydoesnotliveinthe
qualityorcharacterofacompanysproductorservice;itlivesin
therelationshipbetweenthevendoranditscustomers.
RelationshipsdeIinebrandsandbrandsdeIinerelationships.
Informationtechnologyisnotinitselfanindicatorofthenew
economy,whatisextremelyimportantishowtechnologyisbeing
usedtocreatenewbusinessmodelsandincreaseourproductivity.

returntoinnovationandgrowth.Theempoweredbuyers
thougharenowtakingmoretimetomakeeachdecisionand
areusingawidervarietyofsourcestomakethatdecision.
Todaywithonlineresources,peercommunitiesandsocial
resourcesbuyersnowhavemoreindependentsourcesof
informationandasaresultexpectationsareelevatedbeyond
meresalespitchestovalue-addedconsultativeadvice.
Formarketingdepartments,thetimeofhighspendingacross
awideassortmentofprogramshasgivenwaytobare-bones
budgeting.Itsnotthatmarketingsoverallcharterhas
changed,butitsfundinglevelsclearlyhave.Wearein

Digital music sales drive 4%
growth
Recordedmusicsalesareupforthe=irsttimesince1999.For
morethanadecade,themusicindustryhasbeenblaming
piracyforerodingitspro=its,butnowonlinesalesand
streamingservicesareresponsiblefortheindustry'sgrowth.
Thankstodigitalsales,theAustralianmarketfortherecorded
musicindustrygrewfourpercentlastyearfrom$382.7
millionin2011to$398.1millionin2012,accordingtoa
digitalmusicreportbytheInternationalFederationofthe
PhonographicIndustry.DanRosen,CEOoftheAustralian
RecordingIndustryAssociation(ARIA),saidtheresurgenceof
thelocalindustryinAustraliashowsnosignofabatingand
predictedcontinuedrolloutoftheNBNshouldfurtherspur
sales.Howeverheadded:"Localrightsorganisations,
includingARIA,areconcernedthatwhilethenewNBNopens
upendlesspossibilitiesforlocalcontentindustriesifmore

Howeverthemarketdiffersineachstatewithanemergingtrend
formulti-skilledemployees.Queenslandhasjustundergonea
majorgovernmentshakeoutwithplanstooutsourcebillionsof
dollarsofworktoprivatecompaniesandachangeofministerasa
resultoftheannouncement.
Perth,wheretherehasbeendemandandshortfalls,drivenbythe
resourcessectorandknock-ondemandsinassociatedbusiness
areas,isnotseeinganyshortagesatthemoment.
AnumberofPerthminingcompanieslastyearannouncedbudget
andprojectcutssothisresultedincandidateswithlimitedITjob
opportunitiesandaverycompetitivemarketforprojectbased
jobs,MsTrevorsaid.Buttheforecastformarketandproject
improvementsslatedforFebruaryhavenowbeenpushedtoApril
duetotheWAstateelectioninMarch.Requirementsformulti-
skilledstaffhavealsoincreasedinWAwithapreferencefor
candidatestohavemoreroundedskillssuchashands-ontechnical
projectmanagers.Itsmorecosteffectiveandrecentjob
descriptionsareaskingformorevariedskills.Forexample,
technicalhands-onprojectmanagers,businessanalystsand
consultantsareinhigherdemandthanjustaprojectmanager,Ms.
Trevoradded.
InSydneythereismainlyashortageinthehighlyspecialised
areassuchasbusinessintelligenceanddatawarehousingroles.
Thereisalsoade=initetrendforcompaniestorequiredevelopers
andtesterstohavethenecessarytechnologyskillsaswellasto
interactandcommunicatewiththebusinessandclients,face-to-
face.Essentiallyprofessionalsneedtobeabletocodeand
communicate.
InMelbournetherehasbeenalotofdownsizingforITemployees
inthebankingindustrytraditionallyalargeemployerofthis
sectorinthepast.Wereexpectingthatmarkettopickuplaterin
theyear.Intheprivatesector,SMEsinVictoriaacrossdifferent
industriesarealsolookingformulti-skilling.Theskillssets
requiredvarybutmanywantthemixofinfrastructureand
developmentexperience,Ms.Trevorsaid.
Gartner says worldwide business intelligence
software revenue to grow 7% in 2013

US$13.8billionin2013,asevenpercentincreasefrom2012,
accordingtoGartner,Inc.ThemarketisforecasttoreachUS$17.1
billionby2016.
InAustralia,businessintelligencesoftwarerevenueisforecastto
reachA$475.6millionin2013,up9.5percentoverlastyear.
GartnerexpectsNewZealandBIsoftwarerevenuetoreachNZ
$75.1millionthisyear,up8.4percentfrom2012.
"BIandanalyticshavegrowntobecomethefourth-largest
applicationsoftwaresegmentasenduserscontinuetoprioritiseBI
andinformation-centricprojectsandspendingtoimprovedecision
makingandanalysis,"saidDanSommer,principalresearchanalyst
atGartner."Asmoreandmoreinformationisgenerated,business
modelsneedreinvention,andit'sincreasinglyclearthatmastering
analyticsonbigdatawillbeakeydriverforthenexteconomic
cycle.
CIOappetiteforBIiscomplementedbymore-tacticalbuyingin
businessunitsfordepartmentalandworkgroupanalysis,aswellas
forpersonalBI,enabledbytheNexusofForces(cloud,mobile,
socialandinformation).Thesearefundamentaldrivers.However,
inthenearterm,growthwillbehamperedbysluggish
macroindicators,aswellasbyslowingsalescyclesofmultimillion-
dollarend-to-endBIdeals.Comparedwith2011growthof16
percent,2013andthecomingyearsareexpectedtobeslower,with
growthinthehighsingledigits.
"AlthoughthisisamaturemarketandhasbeenatopCIOpriority
foryears,thereisstillalotofunmetdemand.Everycompanyhas
numeroussubjectareassuchasHR,marketing,socialandsoon
thathaveyettoevenstartwithBIandanalytics,"saidKurt
Schlegel,researchvicepresidentatGartner."Thedescriptive
analyticshavelargelybeencompletedformostlargecompaniesin
traditionalsubjectareas,suchas=inanceandsales,butthereisstill
alotofgrowthexpectedfordiagnostic,predictiveandprescriptive
deployments.Sincemanymidsizeenterpriseshaveyettoevenstart
theirBIandanalyticinitiatives,weexpectthemarketforBIand
analyticsplatformswillremainoneofthefastest-growingsoftware
markets.
