BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Approximately a year after final approvals were given for a theater wing addition to Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School in the town of Jackson, the facility is beginning to take shape. During a March 6 interview and tour, school Superintendent David Bartelt said the project will be completed by the end of May, with the summer months to be spent fine-tuning technical aspects of the additional and completing outside landscaping. Craicmore performing at Schauer Center

Craicmore, a contemporary traditional celtic quartet, comes to the Schauer Arts & Activities Center on Saturday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. Four part harmony, rhythmic hardshoe dancing, an East Indian Shruti Box, and rumbling Didjeridoo all accent the warmth of the fiery performance. With roots in the music of Scotland and Ireland, Craicmore features critically acclaimed vocalist Nancy Johnston. The marriage of Johnstons warm vocals with John MacAdams and Sean Faye Cullens churning rhythms and Dave Champagnes sinuous whistles and piping displays their absolute delight in playing. Like the name itself, an easy blend of an Irish word for fun "craic," and "mor," Irish for big, Craicmores music does what great music shouldenrich the tradition. The performance will be preceded by a free SoundBites discussion from 6:30-7 pm, during which members of the group will provide background on the program. Advance reservations recommended to guarantee seating. Tickets to Craicmore are $30 or $26 for adults and $28 or $24 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the Schauer Center Box Office Monday through Friday from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm at 147 N. Rural Street in Hartford, charge by phone at 262-670-0560, ext. 3 or online at SchauerCenter.org.

NO HEAT TO THE FEET

For some reason long ago, people started spreading the poor advice to others with foot problems to soak their feet in hot water, with or without some soaking additive. This is definitely WRONG. Never soak your feet in hot water. Even some whirlpools and spas are too hot for safety. Hot water can cause a dilatation of the blood vessels allowing blood clots to move if present. This could result in a stroke or heart attack. Hot water will also cause continued swelling of a foot or ankle resulting in continued pain of the foot, ankle or toes. Usually swelling will respond to cool or cold treatment, but if you are a diabetic or have poor circulation, you should see a Podiatrist before doing anything.

10 tips on clearing out clutter

(NAPSI)If you're like most Americans, you've lost something valuable because of clutter, according to a recent Harris Interactive survey. The most common thing lost? Important documents and bills. So that you don't have to deal with such difficulties, here are 10 tips to help you get organized: Tip 10: Start small when starting to declutter. Pick one area or room and sort through your stuff. Purge items no longer used and assign the keepers a place. Tip 9: Keep things orderly. Create zones for certain activities or categories and store all related items in that zone. Tip 8: Have a young family? Make it a game with your kids to get organized. Create a treasure hunt and you may rediscover items once thought to be lost. Tip 7: Organization needs consistency. Talk to your significant other or roommate about maintaining a united front on keeping things organized. Tip 6: Enlist help for larger organization efforts. Invite friends over to help clear out clutter; pay them with pizza and cold drinks for their work. Tip 5: Donate duplicate or unwanted items to a charity that can then use your extras to support those in need. Tip 4: Pick your battles. Start with what is manageable, like a closet, and work your way toward larger projects, such as the basement or garage. Tip 3: Create routines. Make it a habit to tackle a new area of the home every month. Tip 2: Put it away now. Done using something? Instead of letting things pile up, put them away immediately. Tip 1: Enjoy the spoils of victory. Cleaning and organizing is a daunting but rewarding task. Enjoy your accomplishment.

Attendees can have their treasures evaluated at a Show n Tell with Mike Paul event at the Old Courthouse Museum, 320 S. 5th Avenue, West Bend, on Tuesday, March 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. Paul, of Paul Auction Company in Kewaskum, will also provide interesting and entertaining information to the audience. This evening is free for Washington County Historical Society members, and $5 per person for non-members. Due to the popularity of this event, only one item per person is permitted. Those who have more than one item or would like a formal appraisal should contact Paul Auction Company at (262) 338-3030.

RETIREMENT s Senior LIVING For

Getting the most out of Social Security
(BPT) - The majority of Americans support continuing the Social Security program, even if they are decades away from drawing benefits, a 2010 survey by AARP found. Nevertheless, with the program's future financial viability an ongoing subject of political debate, many people may undervalue the role Social Security can play in their retirement planning. "For years, financial services companies have downplayed the role of Social Security in bolstering financial security in retirement," writes James Mahaney, vice president of Strategic Initiatives for Prudential, in the white paper "Innovative Strategies to Help Maximize Social Security Benefits." "However, considering the increased financial risks retirees now shoulder, the tax preferences that Social Security receives, and the income options that Social Security now offers, a strong argument can be made that Social Security should play a greater role in a retiree's financial planning." Each day, 10,000 Americans reach retirement age. With people living longer and fewer companies offering pensions, saving for retirement has become even more important for today's workers. Yet, retirement savings rates remain low. Social Security offers "regular income that is guaranteed to increase over time and continue for as long as you live," Mahaney writes. "No other (retirement) vehicle can match the combination of inflation-fighting increases, longevity protection, investment risk elimination, and spousal coverage that Social Security can (offer)." With Social Security accounting for approximately 40 percent of income for the

From page 1
The school is financing the project through bonds, and fund raising is ongoing. Bartelt said the goal of the school is to have the bonds be paid off in eight years rather than a longer period of time. Were really looking for $1 million a year from our donors, from the people who love the arts, that would be a significant partnership, Bartelt said. The project was designed by PlunkettRaysich Associates while construction is being undertaken by Catalyst Construction. So far, Bartelt noted that while a construction contingency has been built into the project to account for any unexpected situations, Catalyst has barely touched it. Theyve done really good job managing the project, making sure were on track, close to our budget, contingency has been excellent, Bartelt said. It is the fifth major building project for the school since it was first opened 40 years ago.

People and events: Key moments in Jackson area history

The Express News recently asked the Jackson Historical Society for a list of three to five items about the Jackson area that people may not know about. The following information was provided by Russ Hanson of the Jackson Historical Society. A Young Man From Germany Village of Jacksons founder In 1848, Franz Reis, a young German of 27 summers, acquired a preemption on an area of land on which subsequently the Village of Jackson arose. The year before he had emigrated from Germany, and arrived almost penniless. Strength, coupled with courage and determination, were his capital. When he had saved up a little money, he bought forty acres of land. To this he added one stretch after another, as his means would allow, until at last, he owned four hundred acres of the finest soil in that vicinity. He worked his land in the best way and with the best means of the pioneers. When the "air-line" railroad was built from Milwaukee to Fond du Lac, Franz Reis offered the company, free of charge, a right of way and a plot of ground for a depot, for he was aware of the advantages he would reap from a railroad that would pass through his farm and would stop right at his door. Not only would he benefit from it, but likewise the entire neighborhood. The offer was accepted, the rails were laid across his land, and the depot was built. Thus he became the founder of Jackson which formerly was called Riceville, after his Anglicized surname, so that Americans could pronounce it correctly. On his farmland the village was built. In 1873 he erected a large general store and saloon, and also an elevator, and around this center the village grew. The founder had six children, of whom the three sons followed in the footprints of their father. He died in an accident in 1878. "Reisville (Riceville)" was incorporated as the Village of Jackson in 1912. It covered 160 acres and included 172 persons Jackson and the railroad In the early 1870s, a railroad to be built from Milwaukee to Fond du Lac was seeking a route through our area. Mayfield in the Town of Polk had been working to have the railroad run through its community and appeared to have a head start in the negotiations. When the process bogged down in Mayfield, Reis offered the railroad free rightof-way across his land plus land for a depot, and having solid community backing, sealed the deal. With the railroad passing through his land, in 1873 Reis built a general store, saloon, and grain elevator, beginning a period of community growth. "Reisville (Riceville)" was incorporated as the Village of Jackson in 1912. It covered 160 acres and included 172 persons. "Corner Communities" in the Town of Jackson The Town of Jackson was incorporated on January 21st, 1846. Within the mainly agricultural Town of Jackson there developed a number of hamlets to serve local trade. Most of the hamlets had a general store, saloon and dance hall, blacksmith shop, and church. Some had a cheese factory, post office, or school. Among these hamlets was Kirchhayn on Western Avenue, Thiels Corners at Hwy. 60 and County M, Salter at Pleasant Valley Rd. and County M, Keowns Corners at County NN and Maple Road, Gumms Corners at Sherman Road and County P, and of course, Reisville (Jackson). With the coming of the railroad to Reisville (Jackson), it grew while the other hamlets faded into history. Of these hamlets, only Kirchhayn and Jackson remain today. First town meeting By a legislative act the Town of Jackson was created on January 21, 1846. On April 7, 1846, three months after the town had been born, the first town meeting was held. It appears to have been looked upon as a most important affair, for 43 voters were present-evidently the entire voting population. It was decided to levy $100, of which $75 were for general expenses and $25 for schools. Thus the town began to manage its affairs. Jackson Town Hall was Country Club

...How a country club became Jackson Town Hall

From page 8
The Town of Jacksons town hall was originally the Twin Oaks Country Club. One of the two bur oaks remains today and can be seen growing through the roof of the town hall. An original farm house and barn were incorporated into the country club when it was built in the late 1950s. The property dates back to land purchased from the U. S. Government in 1846 and 1848. The country club failed in the 1970s. After several owners, the property was purchased by the Town of Jackson about 1990. A Wisconsin Secretary of State from Jackson Today, Washington County is considered politically to be leaning Republican. In the 1800s, however, it was very strongly Democratic. In 1894 that began to change with the election of the first person elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Republican from Washington County, William H. Froehlich of Jackson. Froehlich was born in Jackson in 1857, son of German immigrants. His education was in the Jackson public school, Davids Star Lutheran School in Kirchhayn, and the Spencerian Business College in Milwaukee. After working in Milwaukee, he returned to Jackson to work. In 1887, he was elected Justice of the Peace. He was Postmaster from 1888 until 1893. In 1891, he was appointed a member of the school board and served until 1907. In 1892, Washington County Republicans nominated him for the Assembly, but he was defeated. Two years later, in 1894, he was elected to the State Assembly. This was the first time a Republican had been elected to the assembly from Washington County. He was reelected in 1896. As Assemblyman he was chairman of the Committee on Dairy and Food, and here is where he gained a reputation by his advocacy of the Pure Food Bill to restrict the sale of impure and adulterated food and drugs. The Republican State Convention of 1898 placed his name on its ticket as a candidate for Secretary of State. He was elected by a gratifying majority. After completing his second term as secretary of state, he retired from public life and returned to Jackson. In 1905 he was again appointed postmaster of Jackson. In 1907, he organized The Wm. H. Froehlich Co. of Jackson, and served as its president. Also in 1907, he organized the Jackson State Bank, was a principal stockholder, and cashier. He was the leader in the movement to incorporate the Village of Jackson. The incorporation was granted by the court in 1912. A Civil War soldier from Jackson Andrew J. Fullerton, Jackson resident, son of farmers Joseph and Catherine Fullerton, enlisted in the 26th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment at the age of 21 on August 21, 1862. Originally in Company G as a Corporal and then 1st Sergeant, he was severely wounded in the thigh during the battle for Chancellorsville, Virginia. He later fought at Gettysburg, PA. He was transferred to Company F, "The Lakeshore Rifles", and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on June 8, 1864. He was promoted to Captain on October 19, 1864 and his unit joined General Sherman for the Atlanta Campaign, March to the Sea, and Carolina Campaign. He fought in battles for Resaca, GA, Funkstown, MD, Chattanooga, TN, New Hope Church, GA, Buzzard Rost, GA, Wauhatchie, TN, and Cassville, GA. He was mustered out on June 13, 1865. Over 150 men from Jackson served in the Civil War. Captain Andrew J. Fullerton was one of them. The Andrew Fullerton GAR Post #193 in West Bend was named for him. The Charter was established on March 21, 1885 with 17 Charter Members Membership in the GAR, the Grand

...Schowalter family emigrates to area

From page 9
Army of the Republic was limited to those men (and a few women) who served in the Union Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War. Therefore, it was destined to eventually go out of business and in 1956 with the death of its last member, the charter was vacated. The Schowalter family emigrates to the Jackson area Why had the Schowalters emigrated to this country from Hesse-Darmstadt in 1843? Jacob Schowalter had 23 acres of land in various small parcels around the village in which the family made their home. He had a half acre here, an acre there, and a quarter acre here, which was the custom in those days for all families. Jacob had four sons and two daughters and it was very difficult to make a living from these 23 widely scattered parcels of land. It was for this reason that Jacobs son, Samuel, came to the United States in 1843 In the early 1840s, Samuel Schowalter came to Milwaukee and took a job with the Pabst Brewing Co. Looking for land for his family still in Germany, he walked northwest out of Milwaukee on an Indian trail and came to Richfield. The old Indian trail eventually became Highway 41. After staying with friends in Richfield which was just being settled, he heard of some land available in the area. He walked from Richfield to what is now the intersection of Western Avenue and County P in Jackson. The land was covered with virgin timber and had a flowing spring on it. The Indian trail that ran alongside this land eventually became Hwy. 55, then Hwy. 45, and finally County P. Samuel hurried back to Milwaukee and wrote his father to urge him to bring his family to the United State at once. Upon arriving, they immediately made a claim and paid $125 for each 80 acre parcel they claimed. An 80 acre parcel was claimed in the name of the father and each of the four sons, with three of the 80 acre parcels being on the north side of the present road (Western Avenue) and two being on the south side across from the other three. The Schowalter family had found their new home in Jackson. Marshals days over: Jackson abolishes postDecember 1976 Jackson was the last village in the state with a marshal as the top law enforcement officer. In December 1976, the village abolished the elected position in favor of an appointed police chief.

...Getting the most out of Social Security

From page 5
average retiree, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, it makes sense to take steps to maximize potential Social Security benefits, Mahaney advises. While most Americans realize they accrue Social Security benefits throughout their careers, many may be unaware that they can influence the amount they will receive upon retirement. Retirees can help maximize their Social Security benefits by avoiding four costly - and common - mistakes: Don't underestimate the real value of Social Security. Don't rush to collect Social Security - and then regret the reduced benefits for the rest of your life. Don't overlook the various ways married couples can integrate their benefits. Don't get blindsided by taxes. Claiming benefits as soon as they're eligible is a common mistake that can cost retirees tens of thousands of dollars over their lifetime. Although most everyone becomes eligible for benefits at age 62, delaying benefits until you reach Full Retirement Age (which varies depending on your birth year) or later may help ensure you receive the maximum amount you qualify for. "Retirees often apply for Social Security benefits early," Mahaney writes. "Most certainly didn't stop to think that ... they could have potentially doubled their initial payments if only they had waited until age 70." Another common mistake is forgetting that when you retire, the income received from IRA withdrawals often causes Social Security benefits to become taxed as well. Since Social Security income is taxed differently than IRA income, you can often reduce your taxes by choosing higher Social Security income and lower IRA withdrawals. It's never too early - or too late - to plan for retirement, experts agree. Talk to your financial advisor about your retirement strategy and how Social Security fits into it. "It's all about choices," Mahaney concludes. "Those who understand how to evaluate their choices and optimize their decisions will be the ones to enjoy a more secure retirement. A larger amount of Social Security within a retirement income strategy may, indeed, be the golden ticket to the golden years."
