InGreece
Olive cultivation is one of the largest and most important Greek agricultural sectors, with national annual olive oil production about 400.000 t. Olive pomace oil potential is estimated based on the assumption that olive pomace oil is production is about 8% of the olive oil production (32.000tn)

2/36

The majority of the olive oil extraction mills use the three-phase extraction technology system (Aprox. 3,2% uses the traditional extraction system, 2,4% uses the 2-phase system & 94.4% uses the 3-phase system).

3/36

In the Island of Crete, exist ten (10) operational pomace oil refineries and the overall processed virgin pomace amount is estimated at 200.000tn annually with small fluctuations from season to season. From this quantity, 100.000tn depleted pomace is produced of which aprox. 50% is being consumed in the refineries as fuel and the rest is sold to the local market at a relatively low price (50 /t). By comparing energy cost for heating, olive pomace has a significant advantage over diesel as the heat content per Euro is 15.454 kcal/ for heating diesel (market price 0,60 /L) and 81.020 kcal/ for olive pomace.

In Greece at old times pulp was used as animal feed and for this reason pomace oil refineries were separating the pit from the pulp after the pomace oil extraction. Nowadays pulp which isnt used as feed, is burned with the pit. In Spain the separation of pit from pulp is taking place after the olive oil extraction this is due to the fact they use decanters which in Greece are considered as expensive for their small production in comparison with Spain.

Abea is a 120 years olive oil industry located at Chania, in the island of Crete. The industry sells besides olive oil, pomace oil, olive soaps and depleted pomace

Abeas pomace refinery is the 1st in Greece which used depleted pomace as a fuel

8/36

At the pomace oil refinery virgin pomace is dried and the moisture content is reduced from 50% to ~12%

9/36

~50% of the depleted pomace produced is used during the drying phase of virgin pomace. 31% is used at the drier and 19% for the production of steam

10/36

After the drying phase a solvent is used in order to extract pomace oil from the pomace. The price for pomace oil is 650/tn

11/36

This final product contains: pulp, pits and humidity ~12% In the market this product can be found with several names such as: olive kernel wood, exhausted pomace or depleted pomace.

12/36

Pomace oil refineries are energy autonomous Total thermal energy consumption: 150*10 ^9 Kcal Total electricity consumption: 2*10^9 Kcal Thermal: 98,8% Electical: 1,2%

13/36

The final product has an energy content of 3.500-4.000 kcal/kg, (16 MJ/kg), (4,4 kWh/kg). The refineries in the island of Crete produce annually ~100.000tn depleted pomace. Equals to 350*10^9 Kcal

The available amount of depleted pomace to enter the market is ~57.000 tn Equals to 200*10^9 Kcal
