Second Semester Branch: Civil Engineering Specialization: Geomechanics and Structures MCEGS 204 SPECIAL FOUNDATIONS AND STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF FOUNDATIONS (Regular 2011 Admission onwards) Time: 3 Hrs Max Marks: 100 Answer all questions (Use of IS-456-2000, IS-2950 (Part-1)are permitted) (For candidates admitted from the year 2011 onwards) (Assume suitable data wherever necessary) 1. Design a reinforced concrete square footing for a column of section 400X400mm which is subjected to an axial load of 1000kN and a uniaxial moment of 400kNm at service state. Consider wt of soil=20kN/m3 Angle of repose () =30o Allowable bearing capacity of soil (q0)=150kN/m2 Concrete of grade M20 and Fe 415 grade steel (25) OR 2. A rectangular combined footing having a longitudinal beam joining two columns 400X400mm and 300X300mm in sections carrying loads of 750kN and 300kN respectively spaced at 4.5m centre to centre. Allowable soil pressure =130 kN/m2.Use M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel. Design the slab. (25) 3. A building consists of 12 columns 400X400mm in sizes arranged in three rows of four each. Distance between the columns is 5meach. The load carried by four corner column is 500kN each, that carried by exterior column is 550kN each and that carried by interior column is 900kN .Allowable soil pressure is 50 kN/m2.Design the raft slab.Use M20grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel. (25) OR 4. a) i)Mention methods of analysis of beams on elastic foundations (2)

ii) Explain classifications of beams as rigid and flexible (3) iii) A combined rectangular footing in medium dense sand is 7.5m in length, 1.3m in width and 450mm in depth. Loads of 750kN are placed at 2.5m from L.H.S and load of 300kN at 0.6m from R.H.S.Classify the beam. (5)

b) The load from funnel shaped overhead water tank supported by cylindrical shaft rests on circular raft. [P.T.O] Height of tower shaft=20m above GL. Basic wind pressure=1.5 kN/m2 Depth of foundation (Df)=1.5m Allowable soil pressure=150 kN/m2 Dia of supporting shaft=5m Total load from tank and shaft=7880 kN Total moment due to load about the base (M)=2884kNm Design the circular raft. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 grade steel (15) 5. A reinforced concrete column is supported on 4 piles of dia 300mm and carries load of 800kN and moment of 100kNm in Y-direction. There is a seismic moment of 500kNm in any direction at a time. The centre to centre distance of piles in X and Y direction are 1.1m. The centre of pile to the edge of pile cap may be taken as 300mm. Design the pile cap using M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel. (25) OR 6. a) What are the advantages of well foundations over pile foundations. (5)

b) Determine the cross-sectional dimensions of a cylindrical open caisson to be sunk through 33m of sand and water to bed rock if allowable bearing pressure is 1300kN/m2. The caisson has to support a load of 55X103kN from superstructure. Test the feasibility of sinking of the superstructure. Test the feasibility of sinking if the skin friction is 30 kN/m2. Also calculate the necessary thickness of seal and thickness of wall. (20) 7. Design a suitable tower foundation for double circuit 144kV transmission line without any deviation. The foundation is to be located in sandy soil with =30o ,=20kN/ m3 Bearing capacity of soil = 200 kN/m2. Foundation is subjected to the loading given in table Nature of load Load in kN under condition Normal condition(NC) Broken wire condition(BWC) 1)Downward 220 300 2)Uplift 165 240 3)Shear in transverse 14 18 direction 4)Shear in longitudinal 8.5 direction (25) OR 8.A concrete chimney of height 80m with external dia of shaft being 4m at top and 5m at bottom is required in a place where load intensity is1.5 kN/m2. Thickness of the brick lining =100mm. The permissible bearing pressure of the soil at the site is=150 kN/m2 . Adopt M 20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel. Design the foundation for chimney. Assume the thickness of shell is 200mm at top and it is increased to 400mm at bottom. (25)
