Wortatlas der arabischen Dialekte

Band I: Mensch, Natur, Fauna und Flora
Peter Behnstedt and Manfred Woidich
September 2010 ISBN 978 90 04 18664 4 Hardback 240 pp List Price EUR 150.- / US$ 213. Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 1, The Near and Middle East, 100/1 The Wortatlas der arabischen Dialekte / Word Atlas of Arabic Dialects (WAD) provides an unprecedented survey of the lexical richness and diversity of the Arabic dialects as spoken from Uzbekistan to Mauretania and Nigeria, from Malta to Sudan, and including the Ki-Nubi Creole as spoken in Uganda and Kenya. The multilingual word atlas will consist of three volumes in total with some 500 onomasiological maps in full color. Each map presents a topic or notion and its equivalents in Arabic as collected from the dialectological literature (dictionaries, grammars, text collections, ethnographic reports, etc.), from the editors own field work, from questionnaires filled out by native speakers or by experts for a certain dialect region, and also from the internet. Polyglot legends in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian accompany the maps to facilitate further access. Each map is followed by a commentary in German, providing more details about the sources and the individual forms, and discussing semantic and etymological issues. All quotations are in their original language. The maps mainly show lexical types, detailed and concrete forms are given in the commentaries. An introduction is provided in both German and English and an index of all lexemes in the atlas will be available. The first volume Band I: Mensch, Natur, Fauna und Flora / Volume 1: Mankind, Nature, Fauna and Flora will contain subjects such as family members, professions, human qualities. The second volume will deal with material culture (house, utensils, food, clothing, vehicles, etc.) and the third and final volume will focus on verbs, adjectives and function words. The atlas will be indispensable for everyone interested in the modern spoken Arabic language, as well as for dialectologists and for semanticists.

General Maps of Persia 1477-1925

Cyrus Alai
October 2010, Revised Edition ISBN 978 90 04 14759 1 Hardback (xvi, 320 pp., 211 ills.), 28,0 x 37cm List price EUR 210.- / US$ 311. Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 1, The Near and Middle East, 80 Iran, or Persia as it was known in the West for most of its long history, has been mapped extensively for centuries but the absence of a good carto-bibliography has often deterred scholars of its history and geography from making use of the many detailed maps that were produced. With over 400 separate map entries and over 200 illustrations, this work covers all the important printed general maps of Persia from the early editions of Ptolemy at the end of the 15th century until 1925 when the Qajar dynasty was overthrown. Useful historical accounts provide the background to this wealth of cartographic achievement. After a description of the many editions of Ptolemy, later maps are divided into groups according to the country where they were produced. This permits the work of a single cartographer to be handled in an uninterrupted sequence, thus aiding quick reference to a particular style of map, and its later offshoots. At the end of each major entry, further details concerning different editions and variations, other related maps, historical notes and unique or important features are provided, thus fitting the map into its chronological background. The large number of indexes at the end of the book should enable map collectors, dealers and librarians to identify any map of Persia with ease. This book is a good balance between history and geography, and will appeal to a wide range of readers. This second revised edition includes two new maps and a list of addenda.

October 2010 ISBN 978 90 04 18401 5 Hardback with dustjacket (420 pp.), 28,0 x 37cm List Price EUR 250.- / US$ 355. Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 1, The Near and Middle East, 99 This volume complements the award-winning General Maps of Persia. Encouraged by numerous positive reviews, Cyrus Alai continued his research and collected further material to produce the present volume: Special Maps of Persia, 1477-1925, covering every map of that region, other than general maps. It not only complements the General Maps of Persia, it is also a completely new volume in its own right and, providing an even closer insight into the region. The book has a dual character, being both a cartobibliography and a mapping history of Persia. It contains 761 map-entries, of which 409 are illustrated, mostly in color. Concise related historical accounts precede every chapter and section, and essential historical notes are also supplied within many of the map entries.

Handbook of oriental StudieS

Arab painting, preserved mainly in manuscript illustrations of the 12th to 14th centuries, is here treated as an artistic corpus fully deserving of appreciation in its own terms, and not as a mere precursor to Persian painting. The book assembles papers by a distinguished list of scholars that illuminate the variety of material that survives in scientific as well as literary manuscripts. Because of the contexts in which the paintings appear, a major theoretical concern is, precisely, the relationship of painting to text. It rejects earlier scholarly habits of analysing paintings in isolation, and proposes the integration of text and image as a more satisfactory framework within which to elucidate the characteristics and functions of this impressive body of work. This second revised edition includes a list of addenda.

September 2008 ISBN 978 90 04 16858 9 Hardback (xciv, 602 pp.) List price EUR 199.- / US$ 295. Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 1, The Near and Middle East, 97 One of the main cultural consequences of the contacts between Islam and the West has been the borrowing of hundreds of words, mostly from Arabic but also from other important languages of the Islamic world, such as Persian, Turkish, Berber, etc. by Western languages. Such loanwords are particularly abundant and relevant in the case of the Iberian Peninsula because of the presence of Islamic states in it for many centuries; their study is very revealing when it comes to assess the impact of those states in the emergence and shaping of Western civilization. Some famous Arabic scholars, above all R. Dozy, have tackled this task in the past, followed by other attempts at increasing and improving his pioneering work; however, the progresses achieved during the last quarter of the 20th c., in such fields as Andalusi and Andalusi Romance dialectology and lexicology made it necessary to update all the available information on this topic and to offer it in English.

Section 1, The Near and Middle East, 98 Arranged alphabetically by subject and/or concept, the present handbook has been conceived, for convenience sake and quick reference, as an aid to students and researchers who are often puzzled or even sometimes intimidated by the mysterious world of Arabic manuscripts and the technical language that goes with it. A companion volume to the recently published The Arabic Manuscript Tradition (2001) and its Supplement (2008), the vademecum comprises some 200 entries of varying lengths dealing with almost all aspects of Arabic manuscript studies (codicology and palaeography). It is richly illustrated with specimens from manuscripts and expertly executed drawings. The main sequence is followed by a number of appendices covering abbreviations, letterforms, srah-headings, major reference works and a guide to the description of manuscripts, as well as charts of major historical periods and dynasties.

Section 1, The Near and Middle East, 96 The Aramaic language has continued to be spoken in various dialects down to modern times. Many of these dialects, however, are now endangered due to political events in the Middle East over the last hundred years. This work, in three volumes, presents a description of one such endangered neo-Aramaic dialect, that of the Assyrian Christian community of the Barwar region in northern Iraq. It is a unique record of the dialect based on interviews with the surviving older generation of the community. Volume one contains a detailed grammatical description of the dialect, including sections on phonology, morphology and syntax. Volume two contains an extensive glossary of the lexicon of the dialect with illustrations of various aspects of the material culture. Volume three contains transcriptions of numerous recorded texts, including folktales, ethnographic texts, songs, and proverbs.

The present work supplements the original volume of The Arabic Manuscript Tradition (AMT), both its glossary of technical terms and bibliography. It includes new entries of technical terms, additional definitions of, and/or citations for, the entries already found in AMT, and recent publications on various aspects of Arabic manuscript studies arranged by subject. Among additional features there are illustrations of various Arabic letterforms and an alphabetical index of all works cited in both AMT and its supplement.

This volume comprises an analysis of 112 divine epithets occurring in the alphabetic cuneiform texts from Ras Shamra and Ras Ibn Hani. It is intended to encompass all the epithets of the individual Ugaritic deities, semi-divine, and demonic beings, both good and evil, attested in the published texts. The epithets are profound expressions of the religious views of the ancient Ugaritians and their comprehension is essential for understanding the role, character, and status of the various deities in the Ugaritic pantheon. Particular attention has been paid to parallel divine epithets in Akkadian, biblical Hebrew, and classical Arabic.

Section 2, South Asia, 22 The five-volume Brills Encyclopedia of Hinduism is a thematic encyclopedia, presenting the latest research on all the main aspects of the Hindu traditions in original essays written by the worlds foremost scholars on Hinduism. The Encyclopedia explicitly adopts an interdisciplinary and pluralistic approach, and in it, the term Hinduism is used critically in the knowledge that most of the traditions that today make up Hinduism are much older than the term itself. Animals in Stone
Indian Mammals Sculptured Through Time

October 2008 ISBN 978 90 04 16819 0 Hardback (lxxii, 814 pp.) List price EUR 174.- / US$ 249. Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 2, South Asia, 21
Handbook of oriental StudieS

The art history of South Asia covers a time span of roughly 4,500 years. During this period, a vast number of animal stone sculptures has been produced, covering a great variety of motifs and imagery in different regions and religious traditions. The number of studies devoted to these animal sculptures has remained extremely low. This richly-illustrated book is the first of its kind. Van der Geer offers a comparative study of the ways in which various animals have been depicted and a lucid analysis of the sculptors treatment of their models: living animals. The art history of sculptured animals is contextualized with a description of the use of animals as can be read from ancient texts, archaeological evidence and contemporaneous culture. Parallels, as well as differences, in style or iconography are highlighted, elucidating the variety of animal depictions across regions, religious contexts and through time. The corpus of material discussed ranges from Indus seals, stupa panels and railings, monumental temples from North and South India, non-religious palace and fort architecture to individual sculptures in museum collections.

occupation: administration and policies

3. Occupation: Administration and Policies

3.0 Introduction Shigeru Sato nial propaganda, and the creation of politicized armed forces and a range of institutions designed to control or mobilize the local people and their resources. The Japanese also tried to make use of local elite groups in various places. These groups included the public service corps and business people. They were indispensable instruments for the implementation of the military administration but, thus far, they have attracted much less academic interest than the other elite groups. That was because they were ideologically less vocal than the nationalists and Muslim leaders. Social dynamics were, however, not propelled by ideology alone. A better understanding of the social dynamics would require investigation into the complex ways in which the war affected the power relations between the elite and the non-elite groups at the grassroots level. A well-informed conclusion as to just how widespread, profound, and lasting the wartime impact was on the political and economic setting in Indonesia cannot be drawn without further research. 3.1 S u m at r a s r e g i o n a l governments Gusti Anan

The essays in this Section demonstrate that the Japanese military administration in Java, Sumatra, and the Great East differed greatly. There were two main reasons: first, different circumstances prevailed in different places; second, Tokyo authorities showed no clear overarching policy guidelines. The Japanese invaded Southeast Asia without much preparation for social control or political and military mobilization. Their initial aims were to obtain strategic resources swiftly without causing excessive disturbances in the occupied land. For that reason, Tokyo requested that occupation forces simply make maximum use of the existing administrative machinery. Their policies regarding political and military mobilization were undecided at the time of the invasion. Consequently, Japanese power-holders at various levels expressed diverse and conflicting views. Their gradually-emerging policies swung together with the situation. In Java, the Japanese ambivalent attitudes towards the Indonesian nationalist movement resulted in the rise and fall of the three consecutive mass-mobilization movements: the Triple A Movement, PUTERA, and Jawa Hkkai. In these movements the Japanese made systematic use of the Indonesian nationalists and Muslim leaders. Administratively, they replaced the dual system (consisting of the Dutch Binnenlands Bestuur and the Indonesian pangreh praja) with a unitary pyramidal structure. Administration in the Outer Islands was, in comparison, more decentralized due to the difficulty of instituting a unitary administrative system over the vast and variegated areas. In the eastern archipelago intensified Allied counter-offensives forced the Navy to abandon its civil administration in Maluku and shift its office from Ambon to Bali. Behind the administrative motley, however, certain features were observable across the administrative boundaries, such as the concentration of greater executive power in the hands of the Indonesians, dissemination of anti-colo-

The experiences of the regional governments in Sumatra during the Japanese period reflected

the complexities and inconsistencies of Japanese rule in Indonesia generally and in Sumatra in particular. Unlike in the Dutch era, when Indonesia was firmly united under one central government, the Japanese divided the area into three separate jurisdictions: Sumatra (and the Malay Peninsula) governed by the 25th Army, Java controlled by the 16th Army, and Kalimantan, Sulawesi and the eastern isles under Navy authority. Each military government had its own policies and intentions, which can be seen, for example, from their reactions towards nationalist movements. Inconsistency and variety also colored the rule of the 25th Army in Sumatra. This could be seen in at least three aspects: first, the different policies in various occupation phases; second, the differences in locality; and third, the differences among local government leaders. This essay will discuss the dynamics, changes and complexities of the regional as well as the local governments in Sumatra during the Japanese military administration. During World War Two, Japan identified the Malay peninsula and Sumatra as a nuclear zone in the Nany (Southern Region), an area that was actually larger than present-day Southeast Asia. There were at least four reasons for this policy. First, the Malay peninsula and Sumatra were rich in raw materials like rubber, tin, bauxite, and especially oil, all of which were essential for Japans war machine. Second, its location was strategic from a military point of view. Third, Tokyo expected that an Allied counter attack would start in this region.

Fourth, the Malay peninsula and Sumatra were seen as the foremost fortress and planned as a permanent possession in the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere. The order to attack this large area was given to the 25th Army which, in the southern part of Sumatra, was to be supported by the 16th Army. The military units of the 25th Army, also known as the Tomi Command Force, did their tasks successfully. The Malay peninsula and Singapore were occupied in the last week of February 1942, and Sumatra as a whole was effectively taken over one month later. The important dates, which marked the Japanese subjugation of several regions in Sumatra were: 13 February (Bangka-Belitung); 14 February (Palembang); 4 March (Jambi); 12 March (Aceh and East Sumatra); 17 March (West Sumatra); and 19 March (Riau). Each of these regions was conquered by different command units, and in the early weeks of the occupation of Sumatra these military units were the first to administer the island. First, the 26th Mixed Brigade which had captured Bangka, Palembang, Jambi, Bengkulu, and Lampung took control of these areas and chose Lahat as its headquarters. Second, the 2nd Konoe Division (Imperial Guards Division) had conquered North Sumatra and Aceh and established its headquarters in Medan. Finally, the 14th Osaka Division, which occupied West Sumatra and mainland Riau, chose Padang as its the headquarters. The fact that each of these areas differed in culture, geography, natural and human resources, and were from the outset under different military regimes, would result in highly differentiated forms of local government in Sumatra.

An obvious hiatus amidst the abundance of Pacific War studies is the story of Indonesia during that period. The Encyclopedia of Indonesia in the Pacific War, edited under the aegis of the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation, now fills that gap. This state of the art work reflects the different experiences and historiographic traditions of Indonesians, Japanese, and Dutch. The aim is to present the developments in the Indonesian archipelago in as much a rational and dispassionate way as possible, taking into account regional and social variations and interpreting them within the international context of pre- and post-war trends. With due acknowledgement of different perspectives, ambiguities, unresolved issues and conflicting views, it sets out to enhance mutual understanding and academic dialogue. A detailed chronological and iconographic study of sculptures and wall paintings in Cave 169 at Ping-ling ssu yields a chronological framework for unlocking the difficult issues of dating early fifth century Chinese Buddhist art, and offers some new insights into textual sources in the Lotus, Huayen and Amitabha sutras. Further, this study introduces the iconographpy of the five Buddhas and its relation to the art of Gandhara and the famous five colossal Tan-yao caves at Ynkang.

Ritual Alliances of the Putian Plain

Kenneth Dean and ZHENG Zhenman
Making ingenious use of a wide variety of sources, and old as well as modern technical resources, Kenneth Dean and Zheng Zhenman here set a new standard for an histoire totale for a coherently well-defined cultural region in China. At the same time it deals in-depth with the ongoing negotiation of modernity in Chinese village rituals. Over the past thirty years, local popular religion has been revived and re-invented in the villages of the irrigated alluvial plain of Putian, Fujian, China. Volume 1 provides a historical introduction to the formation of 153 regional ritual alliances made up of 724 villages. Early popular cults, Ming lineages, Qing multi-village alliances, late Qing spirit-medium associations, 20th century state attacks on local religion, and the role of Overseas Chinese and local communities in rebuilding the temple networks are discussed. Volume 2 surveys the current population, lineages, temples, gods, and annual rituals of these villages. Maps of each ritual alliance, the distribution of major cults and lineages, are included.

It left its imprint not only on its native India, but far beyond, on Southeast Asia, Central Asia, including Tibet and Mongolia, as well as the East Asian countries China, Korea and Japan. Not only has Esoteric Buddhism contributed substantially to the development of Buddhism in many cultures, but it also facilitated the transmission of religious art and material culture, science and technology. This volume, the result of an international collaboration of forty scholars, provides a comprehensive resource on Esoteric Buddhism and the Tantras in their Chinese, Korean, and Japanese contexts from the first few centuries of the common era right up to the present.

Local Religion in North China in the Twentieth Century

The Structure and Organization of Community Rituals and Beliefs
Daniel Overmyer

Early Chinese Religion

Together, and for the first time in any language, the 24 essays gathered in these volumes provide a composite picture of the history of religion in ancient China from the emergence of writing ca. 1250 BC to the collapse of the first major imperial dynasty in 220 AD. It is a multi-faceted tale of changing gods and rituals that includes the emergence of a form of secular humanism that doubts the existence of the gods and the efficacy of ritual and of an imperial orthodoxy that founds its legitimacy on a distinction between licit and illicit sacrifices.

September 2009 ISBN 978 90 04 17592 1 Hardback (xiv, 219 pp) List price EUR 103.- / US$ 147. Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 4, China, 22 This book is a comprehensive survey of the structure, organization and institutionalization of local community religious traditions in north China villages in the twentieth century. These traditions have their own forms of leaders, deities and beliefs. Despite much local variation one everywhere finds similar temples, images, offerings and temple festivals, all supported by practical concerns for divine aid to deal with the problems of everyday life. These local traditions are a structure in the history of Chinese religions; they have a clear sense of their own integrity and rules, handed down by their ancestors. There are Daoist, Buddhist and government influences on these traditions, but they must be adapted to the needs of local communities. It is the villagers who build temples and organize festivals, in which all members of the community are expected to participate and contribute. With chapters on such topics as historical origins and development, leadership and organization, temple festivals, temples and deities, and beliefs and values.

China, Democracy, and Law

A Historical and Contemporary Approach
Edited by Mireille Delmas-Marty and Pierre-tienne Will November 2010 ISBN 978 90 04 17871 7 Hardback (900 pp.) List price EUR 225.- / US$ 320. Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 4, China, 26 This landmark volume deals with essential questions: what points of departure, or resources, can be identified in Chinese history and culture for what we call democracy? What aretheir potential for development in a modern China confronted with powerful Western influences? Are there any connections between imperial Chinas strong legal tradition and the PRCs current endeavour to restore the rule of law, in a context of legal globalization in which China itself is an important participant? How serious, or superficial, should the political opening which started in the 1980s be regarded, and the discourse on human rights currently heard in official circles? And finally, how relevant is Taiwans experiment with democratic institutions? In this rich and inspiring volume, foremost French scholars carefully clarify the process of political and legal change, convincingly showing that these questions cannot be answered without a proper understanding of centuries of Chinese juridical, philosophical, religious and political thought.

Handbook of oriental Studies. Section 8, uralic & Central asian Studies

Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 8, Uralic & Central Asian Studies

Edited by Nicola Di Cosmo and Denis Sinor Discusses the history and culture of the Central Asian regions, including linguistics of the Uralic languages. brill.nl/ho8 ISSN: 0169-8524

Introduction to Altaic Philology

Turkic, Mongolian, Manchu
Igor de Rachewiltz and Volker Rybatzki
June 2010 ISBN 978 90 04 18528 9 Hardback (500 pp.) List price EUR 158.- / US$ 225. Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 8, Uralic & Central Asian Studies, 20 There are many excellent books dealing with Old Turkic, Preclassical and Classical Mongolian and literary Manchu individually, but none providing in a single volume a comprehensive survey of all the three major Altaic languages. The present volume attempts to fill this gap; at the same time it reviews also the much debated Altaic Hypothesis. The book is intended for use by students at university level as well as by general readers with a basic knowledge of linguistics. The 39 language texts analysed in the volume are discussed within their historical and cultural context, thus vastly enlarging the scope of the purely linguistic investigation.

December 2008 ISBN 978 90 04 16829 9 Hardback (i, xiv, 1, 306) List price EUR 124.- / US$ 190. Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 8, Uralic & Central Asian Studies, 19 The Kitans established the Liao dynasty in northern China, which lasted for over two centuries (916-1125). In this survey the reader will find what is currently known about the Kitan language and scripts. The language was very likely distantly related to Mongolian, with two quite different scripts in use. A few generations after their state was defeated, almost all trace of the Kitan spoken and written languages disappeared, except a few words in Chinese texts. Over the past few decades, however, inscriptions from the tombs of the Liao emperors and the Kitan aristocracy have been at least partially deciphered, resulting in a significant increase of our knowledge of the Kitan lexicon, morphology and syntax.
