FIFTH SUDAY OF LET

The Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem is often filled
with incense that wafts through the archways and corridors as worship-
pers pray in one of the most sacred places for Christians. Burned in sa-
cred rites through the centuries, the dried, hardened sap of the Boswel-
lia trees that grow on the Arabian Peninsula forms the base of most reli-
gious incense blends today. Mixed with myrrh and other fragrances, the
same sap was used in the preparation of bodies for burial in an attempt
to mask the stench of decomposition.
Martha's warning to Jesus in today's Gospel about the state of
Lazarus' body is a reminder of our very mortality. After he commands
the onlookers to take away the stone from the tomb, Martha tells Jesus,
"Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days."
With our modern funerals, embalming practices, and sealed caskets,
Martha's rather blunt expression of the eventual disposition of our hu-
man remains seems like a shocker. About the only remnant we retain of
what would cover a rather messy end is the abundance of flowers that
surround a casket. What was once a need because of their scent, is
now just a pleasant addition to a mournful situation.
The death of Lazarus is a reminder of our own eventual passing. Like him, we will not be in this world
forever. Our death is just as real. And while our human remains may not necessarily corrupt as quickly as
those of Lazarus, we will still turn to dust. At least our physical selves will. But we are much more than that.
Just like we can see incense, so we can see one another physically. But there is more to incense than the
smoke we see. There is also the sweet smell, that unseen fragrance that rises toward the heavens. And so
do we. More than our physical selves, our souls rise with Christ to the heavenly realm.

The Washing of Feet on Holy Thursday March
28th, 7:30 p.m. Mass
The Lord Jesus washed the feet of his disciples at the
Last Supper as a sign of the new commandment that
Christians should love one another. Such as my love
has been for you, so must your love be for each
other. This is how all will know you for my disciples:
by your love for one another. (John 13, 34-35). For
centuries the Church has imitated the Lord through the ritual enact-
ment. Were looking for both men and women of the parish that
would be interested in participating in the ritual enactment during
the 7:30 p.m. Mass on Holy Thursday, March 28th. Parishioners
must be at least in the 8
th
grade to participate. Please contact Theresa
Szippl at 934-5933 if you are interested
