On behalf of the Conference Council on Youth Ministry, I invite you to take a look at the

exciting ministry opportunities available during 2009! YOU are the reason this booklet was created.
We want you to feel connected and informed about how you can be a part of what is happening in the
Tennessee Conference of The United Methodist Church. We take seriously our mission of creating
disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We also know that we can’t accomplish
this awesome task alone. It takes the Body of Christ working together and reaching out throughout
our vast conference to see this come to reality. I am excited and humbled to have the opportunity to
partner with you on this journey. Please know that I am here to serve Jesus Christ and you. My
purpose is to help you have opportunities to be encouraged, engaged, empowered and equipped for
ministry in the local church, our seven districts, the conference and most importantly the world. I want
to get to know each of you and how we can work together to grow closer to Christ while growing
closer to each other. Let’s take every opportunity given to us to minister to the world which so
desperately needs real forgiveness, real hope, unconditional love, and peace that only Christ
provides.
In Christ,

A unique component of Youth Ministry in the Tennessee
Conference is the use of Design Teams.

Design Teams consist of youth and adults who work

together to create the ministry events found in this
booklet. Youth leadership is a priority and is most
developed and demonstrated through the practice of
creating and designing opportunities for spiritual growth.

In order for the design teams to function as necessary,

WE NEED YOU! There are some guidelines set by our
standing rules that relate to design teams and those are listed below.

If you are interested in being a part of a design team please contact Brad at bfiscus@tnumc.org.

District Youth Rally— Connecting the district youth for worship and service!
Completed prior to March 28th and will be announced by the District Coordinator in conjunction with
the Conference office and the District Superintendents office.

One of the realities of life is that a body cannot live healthily without it parts functioning together. This
is also the reality of the Body of Christ that represents the Youth Ministries of The Tennessee
Conference. A strong body is made up of organs performing their function and providing their input
giving life to the being. So it is with the local churches and districts that make up the Tennessee
Conference.

You will have an opportunity to breathe life into the Youth Ministries of The Tennessee Conference by
participating in your district’s youth rally. The rally will be organized by the local district youth and
youth ministers with assistance from the Conference. This event will be an opportunity for the district
youth to come together and choose delegates to FRESH, the Tennessee Youth Annual Conference.
The delegates will attend FRESH the weekend prior to the Tennessee Annual Conference in June.
These delegates will serve as the District Youth Council and members of the council will be eligible to
run for offices during elections at FRESH to serve on the Conference Council on Youth Ministry.

The District Youth Rally will be an exciting event filled with fellowship, fun, opportunities for service,
and most importantly worshiping together as one District Youth Group. If you would like to help
organize this event contact your District Coordinator.

District YouthWorker Gatherings— Connecting youthworkers together to serve Christ!

The challenges of ministry are tough. The challenges of ministry while feeling disconnected are even
tougher. In order to increase connectivity, gain input, fellowship, and study the scriptures together
monthly district youthworker gatherings will be held at local churches inside of each district.

If you would like to host a gathering for your district, please contact Brad Fiscus, Conference Director
of Youth and Young Adult Ministries at 615-327-1533 or 1-800-403-5795. The gathering will consist
of a scriptural focus and study, opportunities for input and discussion about district and conference
ministry, and fellowship.

District Youth Council— Youth leading youth for Christ!

If you feel called to leadership then put your talents and gifts to use as part of the District Youth
Council. The District Youth Council will work alongside the District Coordinator and District
Superintendent to plan district ministry events throughout the year. This is a great way for you to
experience leadership in the United Methodist connectional ministry system and an opportunity to
meet other youth on fire for Christ.

The members of the District Youth Councils will be a vital component in our desire to create disciples
of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Youth Service Fund is unique to the United
Methodist Church. Money from this fund is
raised by youth, and given to youth to be
used to help other youth. Each year, 70% of
the money we raise stays in our conference.
Most of that money is given away to youth
groups who request help with their mission
projects for the year. The other 30% is
given to the United Methodist Division on
Ministries with Young People which gives
grants internationally to help youth.

opportunities for you to come ―feast‖ on discipleship and service with your
friends, family members, and congregation as we work together to improve
the camp facilities. During this weekend, you will work hard, play hard, and

camps housed at Cedar Crest. Two millennia ago, Jesus used a couple of
loaves of bread and a few fish to feed multitudes. Experience how God
continues to multiply our efforts today, as you work on facilities that will be
used by children, youth, and families for generations to come. This opportunity is a free mission

Second Sunday of September

We believe that we, the youth of the Tennessee
Conference, are the church of today not just ―of
the future.‖ God has given us gifts, ideas, and
talents to lead others in unique ways. We
encourage you to use those gifts to help lead
worship in your local congregation throughout
the year. The CCYM suggests that at least once
a year or more, your youth ministry should take
the lead for the whole worship service. As a
way to mark it on the calendar, we suggest that
you work with your pastor to consider having

What better way to end your summer than to spend it with friends from across the Tennessee
Conference worshiping God at Beersheba Springs? Summer Sizzler brings an exciting and spirit
filled end to the summer camping season. This year you have an exciting opportunity to spend a full
week at Beersheba immersed in a worship environment. By combining Celebration Camp with
Summer Sizzler, campers will have the opportunity to both develop their gifts of worship but also
share them during the Celebration experience as well as at Sizzler. Campers who attend both will
lead worship during the Sizzler weekend. This event is for graduated 6th—12th graders.

Our Summer Events design team works diligently to create a weekend of activities, worship and fun.
Our speaker and musicians as well as campers from Celebration Camp will lead worship during our
sessions. A great Summer Sizzler tradition is the utilization of small groups to facilitate deeper
discussions and deeper understandings of God working in our lives.

Summer Sizzler is filled with traditional games, tournaments, YSF challenges, district meetings and a
cookout.

Our most cherished tradition of the weekend is the opportunity to honor our graduating high school

Over twenty-seven years ago a group of youth

re: A Retreat for Youth Workers
Come and be refreshed, revitalized,
reenergized, reconnected and rejoice as a
child of God with others just like you.

These district based retreats will be an opportunity for

you to connect with other youth workers who are
experiencing the same challenges that you do. This one
day retreat will focus on tending to your soul and your
needs. We encourage you to come to your district
based retreat so that you may meet others in your area but understand if a different
district’s date works better for you. The retreat will begin at 9 am and conclude at 4 pm
with communion.

Cost is $25 includes lunch

Site and Dates will be determined and announced online at www.tnumcyouth.org

Youth Ministry Institute is an in-depth time for

study about Youth Ministry. It will strengthen a person’s call
to ministry as well as give hands on ideas and support for
ongoing ministry. It will be inspirational as well as practical
and relevant to where youth and youth ministry are today. It
requires a serious time commitment. Class time is mandatory
and will be held one Saturday a month. The class will also
participate in three retreat weekends during the course.

Using the strongest leadership in the area, including college

professors, clergy and youth workers, class members will
receive training needed for effective youth ministry in a local church.

Course work includes outside reading and assignments, meeting in ministry small groups, journaling,
and one class meeting with their pastors. Each class meeting will have assigned texts and reading.
All books and reading materials will be furnished.

This is a cooperative ministry sponsored by the Conference Council on Youth Ministry and the Center
for Church Leadership at Martin Methodist College.

The fee for the class is $1000.00 and includes all books, food, and housing fees during retreats.
Scholarships are available upon review of a written request made to the Conference Director of
Youth Ministries.
