Rivers. It is situated at the confluence of three mountain Rivers namely Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. So this hill town got its name as Munnar. It is the only place in Kerala having cool climate as in Kashmir. So Munnar is renowned as the Kashmir of South Munnar is famous for Tea plantations, most of the hills here are converted as Tea plantations. The erstwhile British rulers in India recognized the tourism importance of Munnar. They started to use the estate Bungalows in Munnar as the summer Resorts. The cool weather, Water falls, Wildlife, Neelakurinji, Tea estates, Colonial Bunglows, Matupetty Dam, Neelakurinji, the amazing beauty of the hills Etc attracts a lot of domestic as well as overseas tourists to Munnar. The major tourism locations in and around Munnar are Eravikulam National Park, Neelakurinji, Anamudi Peak, Mattupetty, Attukal Water Falls, Muniyara Caves, Top Station, Echo Point, Chinnakanal, Anayirangal, Pallivasal, Tea Museum, Chinnar, Cheeyappara Waterfalls, Pothamedu, Kolukkumalai, Kundala Dam, Devikulam, Marayur and many more. I am going discuss the features and facilities of the tourism spots in Munnar one by one. Eravikulam National Park Eravikulam National Park is at Rajamala; at a distance of 15 km from Munnar and spread over to an area of 97 sq. km. which is

considered as one of the major attractions in Munnar. The Wildlife Sanctuary is divided into three zones such as core zone, buffer zone and tourism zone. Visitors are allowed to the tourism zone only. It is famous for Nilgiri Tahr-an endangered inhabitant and home to several rare species of animals, exotic birds and butterflies. The panoramic views of the hills covered with rolling grasslands and the Shola forests are increased the popularity of Eravikulam National Park. Neelakurinjis of Munnar was last bloomed in the year 2006. Remember the next Neelakururinji blooming is on the year 2018. Floriculture Centre Floriculture Centre is an extremely well maintained Garden in Munnar which is run by the Kerala State Forest Development Corporation. Chithirapuram is a small town located a distance of just 10 km from Munnar. It is famous for the old Playgrounds and Courts, Large bungalows and Little cottages, Chithirapuram also famous its Tea plantations.

Anamudi Peak The highest peak in the south Anamudi Peak is located inside the Eravikulam National park which has a height of 2700 m from the Sea level. Treks to Anamudi peaks are restricted by the Kerala Forest and Wildlife authorities. Permission from the relevant Kerala Forest authorities may be obtained for the trekking in Anamudi Peak. Mattupetty Mattupetty is situated at a height of 1700 m above sea level; it is at a distance of 13 km from Munnar town. Mattupetty masonry Dam, the famous Diary farm, lush green Tea plantations, Shola forests, Rolling grass lands, Birds of variety species Etc. are the main tourism attractions in Mattupetty. Boating facilities are offered in Mattupetty Dam reservoir. Seeing the hills, Tea Plantations Wildlife, Cattle, Bird varieties and many more on boating is a different experience to everyone. Mattupetty is popular for its modern diary farm which is run by the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project. We can see large varieties of cow breeds here. There are 11 cattle sheds for preserving high yielding variety cow breeds. Visitors are allowed to see some of the cattle shed. Attukad Water Falls Attukad Water Falls situated between Munnar and Pallivasal at a distance of 9 km from Munnar and covered by the hills and dense

forest. Glittering Waterfalls, Rolling hills, facilities for trekking and hiking Etc. are the main attractions in Attukad Waterfalls. Muniyara Caves Muniyara Caves are seen in between Marayur and Kanthalloor, just 1 km away from Marayur. It was used by the tribal to live in. Huge rock slabs are used for the construction of the Caves. It is believed that the ancient sages are used these caves for their meditation. It is also a hot shooting location for the film makers. Top Station Top Station is the highest point on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road which is about 32 km away from Munnar. The altitude of this spot is about 1700 m above the Sea level. It offers the panoramic view of the neighboring villages in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the apt places in Munnar to watch the Neelakurinji flowers blooming over a maximum area.

Echo Point

Echo Point is located at a distance of 13 km from Munnar, on the way to Top staion. Producing echoes several times to the sounds is the peculiarity of echo point. Chinnakanal is very close to the Munnar town which is enriched with the panoramic view of the Western Ghat ranges. The Power House Waterfalls is another attraction in Chinnakanal which is cascade down a steep rock. Anayirangal Anayirangal.is situated a distance of 7 km from Chinnakanal and 22 km from Munnar which is look like a lush green carpet of Tea plants. There is a Dam and reservoir, covered by Tea estates and dense forests. Boating in the reservoir by watching the picturesque views of Munnar give a special experience to the visitors. Pallivasal The first Hydro-electric project in Kerala, Pallivasal is situated at a distance of only 3 km from Chithirapuram in Munnar. With its immense scenic beauty, Pallivasal is also a best picnic spot adjacent to Munnar. Tea Museum Tea Museum- a Museum exclusively for tea was opened some years ago by Tata Tea at the Nallathanni Estate in Munnar. The exhibits in the Museum includes curios, photographs and machineries which are capable of revealing the story of origin and growth of Tea plantations in Munnar. It is must see place in Munnar. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary Wildlife sanctuary is the major attraction in Chinnar. It has a wide array of habitat variations like deciduous forests, dry thorny forest, riparian types, sholas and grasslands. That are interspersed with plains, hillocks, rocks and cliffs which provide Microhabitats for

varied forms of life. Chinnar is also famous for so many species of rare medicinal plants. Blossom International Park Blossm International Park is an Adventure park complex in Munnar which have 1000 ft long fountain, Roller stakes, Underground Meditation Centre and a beautiful Garden. Cheeyappara Waterfalls The Cheeyappara Waterfalls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls of Kerala which is a hot Ecotourism spot. It is situated between Neriamangalam and Adimali on the Cochin-Madurai highway, at a distance of 35 km from Munnar. Cheeyappara is a seven step cascading Waterfall; it is at a height of 1000 m above he Sea level. Pothamedu Pothamedu is an important tourism spot laying 5 km away from Munnar. Visitors are favored by the clear view of the surrounding places from Pothamedu. It is an amazing experience to view the greeneries of the Tea plantations sky kissing hills around Pothamedu. There facilities for Trekking and Mountain walking Kolukkumalai Tea Estate Kolukkumalai Tea estate is about 30 kilometers away from Munnar; it is at an altitude of about 8,000 feet from the sea level. The factory inside the estate engaged in the production of different grades Tea. The production process includes withering, rolling, sieving, fermenting, drying, fiber extraction, and grading. It is also a must visit spot in a Munnar tour. Photo Point

Photo Point is a small place around Kundala Stream filled with woods. It is very favorable place to be photographed. Kundala is a tourism spot developed around Kundala Dam. It is on way to Top station laying 20 km away from Munnar. The picturesque Lake covered with green forest is main attraction in Kundala. The boating facility is provided in Kundala Dam. Devikulam Devikulam is a hill town situated 7 km away from Munnar. The Devi kulam means the Pond of Godess. Devikulam got its name from the popular mineral water lake Sitha Devi Lake here. This Lake is surrounded by Woods and Green hills. The Sacredness, Curative power of the Lake Water, Panoramic views of the surroundings and more attracts a lot of visitors daily. Marayur Marayur is famous Sandalwood. It is the only place in Kerala has natural growth of sandalwood trees. The sandalwood factory of Forest Department, Muniyaras with murals and relics from the New Stone Age civilization and the Childrens Park and much more are the attractions in Marayur. It is siuated at 40 km away from Munnar.
