Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness Cookbook and Recipe Guide

Harvest Goddess and Cooking There is one other individual who shares Recipes in Island of Happiness. When you reach the 255th Floor of the Mine, the Harvest Goddess will meet you there and give you either a Wonderful or a Recipe. Her Recipes tend to be exotic ones. She is the one who will give you all Recipes for Coloured Curries, among others. She will not give more than one gift in any single day, however, whether it is a Recipe or a Wonderful. You do need to have met the Harvest Goddess by throwing an offering into the Spring before she will appear at all on the 255th Floor of the Mine.

Cooking Festival The Cooking Festival with its Cooking Contest is held on 24 Spring. Pierre will visit on 23 Spring to announce the impending event. On 24 Spring, you must go to the Meadow after 10.00 a.m. but before noon to choose a category for your Entry. You can choose between the following: Salads Soups/Drinks Appetisers Main Courses Desserts Other Dishes Once you have made your choice, you will be held to it. Leave the Meadow and you will find yourself in your kitchen, asking yourself what dish you should cook Your chance of winning depends on the combined Stamina Recovery and Fullness Value of your Cooked Dish. Incidentally, you can enter a Cooked Dish given as an item to you by Manfred, but you probably will not win with the entry as the Cooked Dishes he gives are the Basic Dish without any optional ingredients added. A good entry is Relax Tea as even a Basic Relax Tea has 50 SR but you can boost this by adding Milk and more Wild Grasses to the Recipe before you cook it. The actual contestants incidentally depend on the category you choose. By speaking to the individuals at the Festival before you choose your category, you will obtain hints as to the dishes they favour as entries. Regis makes Soup, for example, so if you choose to enter the Soup/Drinks Category, he will be one of the other contestants. Lanna and Denny favour Fish Dishes. The prize for winning the Cooking Contest as in other Festival Contests, is a Wonderful. The Colour of the Wonderful you obtain is based on your total Farming Degree Points. Save your game BEFORE you enter the Meadow to participate in the Festival. If you do not win the Wonderful you desire, reload and perform actions to change your Farming Degree total. Use of tools

as well as the shipment of items will change the total.

Basic and Best Recipes The Basic Recipe will give a specific amount of Stamina Recovery and Fullness. By adding optional ingredients, you can increase the total of each. There are optional ingredients that can be added successfully but will not add anything in terms of Stamina Recovery or Fullness. For example, you can add Carrot Juice to your Basic Carrot Soup recipe, but neither SR nor FL will increase if you do, so it essentially is a waste of a good ingredient. It would be better to use the extra Carrot to make another dish of Carrot Soup. When adding ingredients, only 1 of each item can be added to any Recipe. For example, if Butter is an optional ingredient, you cannot double the SR and FL values by adding 2 sticks of Butter to the Recipe. The game will accept only 1 stick of Butter. In many cases, you can create only the Basic Cooked Dish. There is no possibility of adding any additional ingredients. You can experiment or you can use this Cooking Guide. I have given the Basic and Best versions of each Recipe when optional ingredients can be added. Remember that only 6 Slots for Ingredients are available in Cooking. Ultimately, I will add ALL possible optional ingredients to every Recipe, but at present, I have tried to add those that are easiest to obtain and have the best recovery values. Recipes are given in a specific order by Luke and Madelynn. To obtain Recipes that are useful in the early stages of the game, you may have to obtain many Recipes that require ingredients not yet unlocked first! For example, Pudding, requiring only Milk and an Egg, is one of the last Milk Recipes to be given by Luke. Tip for Obtaining New Recipes Before you give any ingredient to Luke or Madelynn, place it in your top equipment slot but do not actively equip it. When any item is actively equipped (on your head), you will not be able to save your game. With the item in the slot but not actively equipped, save your game. Only after you have saved should you offer the ingredient to the Cook. When Luke or Madelynn no longer will give new Recipes for a basic common ingredient like Medium Fish, Wheat Flour or Soybean, give a Cooked Dish made from that item instead. Sashimi, made from Medium Fish is the link to a number of new Recipes. Tofu made from Soybeans likewise prompts a number of Recipes. Tempura made from Wheat Flour is linked to new Recipes as well. Each Recipe listed in this Guide gives the ingredient that prompts the Recipe but if you wish to proceed without the aid of this guide, remember this tip at least.

How Best to use your Ingredients: You may notice that a basic Juice Recipe, irrespective of the Fruit used, gives +15 SR +3 FL. That means that, whether you make Orange Juice, Pineapple Juice or Peach Juice, the energy value of the beverage will be the same in each case. There are other considerations, however, when deciding which Juice to make. Pineapple Juice ships for over 700G while any other Fruit from a Tree, from Apple to Peach, ships from 100G 250G. On the other hand, you need to ship Summer Fruits from a Fruit Tree (rather than a Crop like Pineapple) to unlock new Farming characters. You need to weigh all these considerations before you decide which ingredients to use for Recipes and which to ship. Cooking in Island of Happiness, greatly increases the shipping value of an item as well as its energy value. In HM DS/Cute DS, all Cooked Dishes shipped for only 1G. Although you needed to ship one of each in order to complete your Shipping List, there was no financial advantage to this. In Island of Happiness, you may discover that a profit can be made whenever you cook an ingredient instead of shipping it raw. A basic Egg ships for 50G. The least you will make whenever you ship a basic cooked Egg is 60G. If you combine the Egg with other ingredients, you can make much more. It is not in Shipping Value that the humble Egg deserves recognition but for Energy Value. Early in the game, if you can build a Chicken Coop, Taro will give you a chick. That chick, when grown, can produce one egg each day. You can incubate the Eggs to raise more Chickens (provided you invest in an Incubator) or you can cook them to create Recovery Items. One of the more dramatic illustrations of the value of cooking, however, is seen with respect to Milk. Milk when consumed raw is worth +2 SR +1 FL. Take a bottle of Milk to Madelynn and she will teach you how to cook Hot Milk which is nothing more than Milk heated in a Saucepan. By making Hot Milk, however, you increase the Energy Value to +15 SR +7 FL. This is 7 x the value of the original Ingredient in terms both of Stamina Recovery and Fullness! Two Types of Energy Recovery You will note that, in Island of Happiness, Energy Recovery is measured by Stamina Recovery and Fullness rather than Stamina Recovery and Fatigue Resistance as in other Harvest Moon games. Fullness is the opposite of Hunger and occurs at regular intervals throughout the day and night as long as your character is awake. You therefore need to eat regularly, even if you do not eat much on any occasion. Your Stamina will decrease when you perform specific activities. 3 Stamina Points are used each time you use an ordinary Tool. If you have set Green Wonderfuls in the Tool, Stamina used can be reduced to zero but for any Tool

without a Green Wonderful in it, every use decreases your Energy level by 3 SR. Many Recipes, especially those that you can make early in the game, are more effective in restoring Stamina than Fullness. Ordinary beverages and soups are more potent in Stamina Recovery than in Fullness potential. An Egg Soup, for example, restores 15 Stamina points but only 3 Fullness. As in real life, the sort of item that sticks to your ribs is the food that will increase your Fullness. Any Dish made with Wheat Flour will give significant Fullness, for example. Rice probably will be the first Grain that you harvest. Cooked Rice has an Energy Value of +5 SR +5 FL, less in terms of Stamina Recovery than most Soups but more in terms of Fullness. Adding Rice to an Omelet, however, to create Omelet Rice will provide your character with a Cooked Dish that is worth +20 SR +28 FL, making it a good Recovery Item and requiring only Egg, Milk, Cooked Rice and Oil. Until you have access to Rice, you can use Egg and Milk to make Puddings, probably one of the better Cooked Dishes early in the game. Remember, though, that you need to ship a few of each item regularly in order to unlock new options and new characters in the game. In particular, Ranch Products made in Makers must be shipped regularly. Do not hoard all your Milk and Eggs for use in Cooking! Frugality and Energy Once the Caf and Diner have opened for business, you should be able to restore Energy Bars that have been depleted almost to zero by purchasing Cooked Dishes. You will notice that, in the ordinary course of a working day, your Stamina will decrease faster than your Fullness. If you have equipped Harvest Goddess Pendants to increase your Total Stamina, you still will find that it moves towards zero faster than your Fullness metre. If you buy Cooked Dishes at the Caf and Diner while your Fullness remains almost at maximum, you will be wasting the effects of the purchases. Wait until you have depleted both metres as far as possible without passing out, and only then visit one of the local eating establishments for a full Recovery both of Stamina and Fullness. This strategy should be employed only AFTER Caf and Diner are open. In the first fortnight of the game, you must try always to maintain your Fullness at maximum as the items that you will be able to eat will not have much value and it is almost impossible to recover Fullness with Chocolate Bars and Wild Grasses if you have depleted it below the halfway mark. Before restaurants exist on the Island, therefore, you must try to keep your Fullness metre at maximum as much as possible. Eat as frequently as you can in order to achieve this goal.

Ranch Products and Makers You may notice that there are a few items that can be made either in your Kitchen or by using a Maker. These items are listed in the Cookbook in the Others Category and consist of Mayonnaise, Butter and Yogurt. Makers may be expensive but it is necessary to buy ALL of them if you wish to unlock all options and new characters in Island of Happiness. The game WILL distinguish between a Ranch Product made as a Cooked Dish and one made in a Maker. It is only those that are made in Makers that count towards the 100 item total that will unlock new Ranch Characters. On the other hand, even though it is necessary to buy and use all Makers, you need to obtain the actual Recipes for Mayonnaise, Butter and Yogurt from the Diner to complete your Recipe Book. You must make one of each and ship it as well. Special Ingredients: Two special ingredients for Recipes can be obtained from Festivals before any Grains are unlocked. These are Buckwheat Flour and Rice Cakes. You will receive a random number of bags of Buckwheat Flour at the Year End Festival and a random number of Rice Cakes at the New Years Day Festival. Save your game BEFORE you enter the Meadow. If you do not receive 14 Buckwheat Flour or Rice Cakes, reload and try again. You can obtain as many as 14 and as few as 1! Once you have unlocked and grown Rice, there will be a Rice Festival at which you will obtain a random number of portions of Cooked Rice, but this Festival will occur only after you have grown and harvested Rice in your own Paddy Fields. In this category, you will find many basic Recipes that consist of a single Vegetable. In almost every case, the Stamina Recovery and Fullness Values of the Basic Dish are the same, irrespective of the variety of Crop used to create the Dish. For example, Basic Stuffed Cabbage and Basic Braised Potato each are worth +15 SR +10 FL but one is considerably more valuable when shipped than the other. Furthermore, Cabbage Seeds must be unlocked and may be one of the last Crops that you are able to unlock. Potato Seed is available from the 1st Spring onward. It may be wisest to ship one Stuffed Cabbage to complete your Cookbook but to make Braised Potato instead if you wish to have a cheap but fairly decent basic Recovery Item in your Rucksack.
