Bottom Of Bag
Ch 10, join.
RND 1: 18 tr in circle.
RND 28: * Dc, ch 1, and repeat from * all around widening as usual.
Must be 20 holes. The hexagon blocks may be sewed or crocheted
together.
2nd row: In each loop across make sc, 9 dc and sc. Ch 4, turn.
3rd row: Skip first sc and dc, picking up front loop only, * (dc in next
dc, ch 1) 7 times; holding back on hook the last loop of each dc make
dc in next dc and in first dc of next scallop, thread over and draw
through all loops on hook (joint-dc made), ch1. Repeat from * across.
Turn. Hereafter pick up back loop only.
5th rnd: Sl st in next tr, ch 4, * tr in next tr, (ch 1, skip 1 tr, tr in next
tr) 3 times; (ch 1, tr in next tr) 4 times; (ch 1, skip 1 tr, tr in next tr) 4
times; ch 1, make a joint-dc over next 2 tr. Repeat from * around. Join
to 3rd ch of ch-4.
6th to 9th rnds inch Repeat 4th and 5th rnds alternately 2 more
times.
10th rnd: Repeat 4th rnd once more. Join and break off.
BODICE ... 1st row: Attach thread to opposite side of chain on Skirt,
ch 4, * 3 dc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * across, dc in last sc. Ch 3,
turn.
2nd row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc and in each sp across, dc in top
of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.
3rd row: Skip first dc, dc in next 2 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3
dc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3,
turn.
4th row: Skip first dc, dc in next 10 dc, ch 5, skip 3 dc, dc in each dc
across to within last 13 dc and turning chain, ch 5, skip 3 dc, dc in
each remaining dc and in top of turning chain. Ch 1, turn.
HEADING . . . Keeping the twist in all loops, attach thread to first loop
on hairpin lace, sc in same place, sc in each loop across. Break off.
Make 2 more pieces the same way and sew to Skirt, spacing evenly.
Make another piece about 7 inches long and sew around neck of
dress. Make a small bow with black, grosgrain ribbon and sew to front
of dress. Make a piece of hairpin lace as before about l l/2 inches,
gather straight edge to form a fan. Sew a piece of wire to center to
hold . in shape. Sew to right hand.
Make another piece of hairpin lace, draw doll's hair to top of head.
Sew hairpin lace around head. Sew a flower to front. Sew another
flower to left wrist.
Sunlight Hat
Crown. Beginning at tip, ch 10, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: *
Ch 10, s c in ring, repeat from * until 24 loops are made, then ch 6.
7th rnd: * Ch 5, s c under next ch-2 sp, repeat from * around (do not
make s cs between 2 trs that come together without ch-2 between),
ending with ch 5, s c in 1st loop.
10th rnd: Same as 6th rnd, ending with sl st in 4th st of ch-6 first
made.
13th rnd: Same as 9th rnd. After last group of trs is made, ch 4, sl st
in 4th st of ch-4 first made.
15th rnd: Ch 5, s c under next ch-2 sp, ch 5, skip next 2 tr, s c under
next ch-2 sp, ch 5, s c under next ch-2 sp, * ch 5, skip next 2-tr (that
are together), s c under next ch-2 sp, ch 5, skip next 2 tr, s c under
16th rnd: Ch 5, s c under next ch-5 loop, then repeat from * of 8th
rnd. After last group of d cs are made, ch 3, s c under next ch-5 loop,
ch 6, skip next loop, s c under next loop.
17th rnd: Same as 9th rnd. After last group of trs is made, ch 4, s c
under cb-6 loop.
18th rnd: Ch 4, tr in each tr with ch-2 between trs, but omitting ch-2
between groups (as in 6th rnd). After last tr, join with sl st in 4th st of
ch-4 first made.
19th rnd: Same as 15th rnd, ending with ch-5, s c under 1st ch-5
loop.
22nd rnd: Same as 6th rnd, but end with s c in 6th st of ch-6.
23rd rnd: Ch 4, and make 2 tr under each ch-2 sp and 1 tr in each tr.
Join with sl st. Do not break off.
Brim. 1st rnd: * Ch 6, skip 2 tr, s c in next tr, repeat frorn * around.
2nd rnd: Ch 5, s c under next loop, then repeat from * of 8th rnd of
crown, around.
4th rnd: Same as 6th rnd of crown. After last tr, join with sl st in 6th st
of ch-6 first made.
6th to 12th rnds incl: Repeat from 8th to 14th rnds of crown incl.
14th and 15th rnds: S c in each s c. With thread double work a rnd
of s c holding along wire and working over it so that it is completely
covered. Fasten wire neatly. Break off. Sew ribbon band inside of
crown adjusting headsize. Starch hat or use white shellac and block.
Trim hat as in illustration.
Shell Motif
Make these Medallions of fine or heavy thread and join into lovely
Luncheon Sets, Table Runners, Tablecloths, Buffet Sets or odd
Doilies.
FIRST MOTIF ... Starting at center, ch 10. join with sl st to form ring.
6th rnd: Sl st to center of first loop, in same loop make sc, ch 20 and
sc; * ch 5, in next loop make sc, ch 20 and sc, Repeat from * around.
Join.
7th rnd: * In next ch-20 loop make sc, half dc, 29 dc, half dc and sc
(petal made); sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. join.
9th rnd: With wrong side of work facing, attach this thread to 9th sc
on ant petal, sc in same place and in next 16 sc, * skip first 8 sc on
next petal, sc in next 17 sc. Repeat from * around. Join and turn.
11th rnd: Beaded sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, skip next sp, (sc
in next loop, ch 5) 4 times; beaded sc in next joint-tr. Repeat from *
around. join.
EDGING . . . 1st rnd: Attach thread to first free loop on any motif, ch
11, * (sc in next loop, ch 7) 16 times; make a joint-tr over next 2
loops, ch 7. Repeat from * around. Join last tr to 4th ch of ch-11.
Row 7—Working through back loops of last row and through ridge of
row 2, sl st together. Skip 22 sts for gusset and work casing on other
side.
Rows 2 and 3—Sc in each st. End off. Sew one handle to each side
of bag, inside casing.
5th Row—Ch 6, turn, sk last 3 sts of last row, a 3-tr-Cluster in next st,
(ch 2, sk 2 sts, a 3-tr-Cluster in next st) 5 times, ch 1, sk 2 sts, 1 tr in
next.
Make four of these Small Blocks and sew together to form a Large
Block. The Cluster Corners form the center design of Large Block,
while the Filet Corners form the corners. Tack the other corners of
Small Blocks together by the p at tip of ends of Oval.
4th Row—* (6 sc, a 4-ch p, and 6 sc) over next 11-ch, 1 sc in sc, (7
sc, p, 7 sc) over corner 13-ch, 1 sc in sc, (6 sc, p, 6 sc) over next 11-
ch, 1 sc in sc, (5 sc, p, 5 sc) over each 9-ch loop to next corner.
Repeat from * around Spread. Fasten off.
Press Border and sew chs of Heading Row to edge of Blocks.
MATERIALS:
NOTE: When making Shells pick up back loop only. When making
Single Crochets pick up both loops on foundation chain only and go
directly through the center of Shells.
TO START: Ch 18.
lst row: Make 6 tr c's in sixth ch from hook, * skip 2 chs 1 sc in next
ch, skip 2 chs, 6 tr c's in next ch and repeat from * to end of row
ending with 6 tr c's in last ch (3 shells in row).
8th and 9th rows: Work same as 2nd row but make 8 tr c's for each
shell.
10th row: Work same as 2nd row but make 10 tr c's for each shell.
1ST ROW: Sc in center ch between 4th and 5th knots from hook, *
(ch 3, sc in back loop of last ch) twice, ch 3, sc in center ch between
next 2 knots. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last ch. (Ch 3,
sc in back loop of last ch) twice, ch 3, turn.
2ND ROW: Sc in 1st loop, * (ch 3, sc in back loop of last ch) twice, ch
3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. (Ch 3, sc in back loop of last
ch) twice, ch 3, turn. Repeat last row 20 more times. Fasten off.
Attach thread to 1 end of foundation chain, into each loop of
foundation chain, into each loop of foundation chain make 6 sc.
Attach round elastic to snood at this point. Continue around working
sc’s into the loops and over elastic to corresponding position at start
of foundation chain. Fasten this end of elastic securely. Cut ribbon in
half and sew to snood at both ends of foundation chain. Put snood on
as in illustration and trim ends of ribbon.
DAISY Mercerized Crochet Cotton, Art. 65, Size 20: 1 1\2 skeins
each Lt. Pink and Shd. Pinks; or
Lily MERCROCHET Mercerized Crochet Cotton, Art 161, Size 20: 2
balls each Baby Pink and Shd. Pinks. No. 12 Steel Crochet Hook.
SIZE - 20 inches.
Make 8 Roses. Sew tog. into a circle, with 2 free petals between
joinings on each Rose on inside of circle, and 4 free petals on each
Rose on outside of circle. Make a 9th Rose. Attach Lt. Pink to center
dc on 1 petal. To join this Rose in center of 8-Rose circle, ch 7, sl st
in lefthand petal of 2 petals on 1 Rose in circle, * ch 4, sl st in 1st
petal on next Rose, ch 7, sc in next petal on center Rose, ch 7, sl st
in next petal on same Rose on circle; repeat from * around; join,
fasten off, Make a 2d circle of 16 Roses. Sew tog. by opposite petals
into a straight row then sew end Roses tog. To join to 1st circle,
attach Lt. Pink to 2d petal on 1 Rose in 1st circle, ch 7, sl st in center
petal on 1 Rose in 2d circle, * ch 7, sc back in next petal on same
Rose in 1st circle, ch 12, sl st in center petal on next Rose in 2d
circle, ch 12, sc back in 2d petal m next Rose on 1st circle, ch 7, sl st
in center petal on next Rose in 2d circle; repeat from * around; join,
fasten off.
2d. SPRAY: Attach to 2d petal on next Rose, ch 16, join to last leaf
on previous Spray, sk 1 st of ch-16, sc in next ch; repeat from **
around Doily (16 Sprays), joining 1st and last leaves.
Rnd 9: Repeat Rnd 6 except make ch-10 lps instead of ch-8 lps; join,
fasten off.
Starch Doily, stretch and pin, right-side-up on waxed paper and block
as illustrated. Leave until dry.
4th row: * Sk 3 sc, holding back the last loop of each dc on hook
make 2 dc in back loop of next sc, thread over and draw through all
loops on hook (cluster made), ch 3 and, working behind cluster, make
dc in back loop of the center skipped sc (1 cluster pattern made), ch
2. Repeat from * across (32 cluster patterns). Ch 3, turn.
11th row: Same as 5th row, making ch 2 (instead of ch-1) to turn (79
shells and 2 half shells on row).
12th row: Cluster in back loop of 2nd dc, ch 3 and, working behind
cluster, make dc in back loop of 1st dc, * ch 2, cluster in back loop of
4th dc of next shell, ch 3 and, working behind cluster, make dc in
back loop of 2nd dc of same shell. Repeat from * across (81 cluster
patterns on row). Ch 3, turn.
Repeat 11th and 12th rows alternately 5 more times; then repeat 11th
row once more.
26th row: Sk first half shell, cluster in back loop of 4th dc of next
shell, ch 3, dc back in lst dc of lst half shell (1 cluster pattern
decreased), ch 2 and make cluster patterns with ch 2 between across
to within last complete shell, ch 2, cluster in back loop of last dc of
last half shell, ch 3 dc back in back loop of 2nd dc of last complete
shell (another cluster pattern decreased). Ch 3, turn.
Repeat 25th to 28th rows inclusive 2 more times; then repeat 25th
and 26th rows once more (Center Back measures 8 inches). Fasten
off.
With right side facing, attach thread to lst sc at left neck edge, shell
under next dc, sc in next. sc, shell in ch-3 sp of next cluster pattern,
sc in next sc, shell under next dc, sc in next sc, shell in ch-3 sp of
next cluster pattern, sc at base of next cluster pattern, shell in ch-3 of
cluster pattern and continue thus along entire outer edge of Sacque
to opposite side of neck edge, working shells along bottom of Sacque
in established pattern. Fasten off.
SLEEVES . lst row: With wrong side facing, attach thread to shell
where first half of joined cluster pattern was made at underarm, ch 2,
cluster in back loop of 4th dc of shell where other half of joined cluster
pattern was made, ch 3, dc back in back loop of 2nd dc of shell where
thread was attached, ch 2 and work cluster pattern with ch-2 between
over shells of Sleeve, ending with cluster pattern over last free shell,
ch 2, sl st in tip of lst cluster made. Turn.
Work thus in pattern until 6 rnds in all have been completed. Fasten
off.
Run ribbon in and out of both rows of dc sps at neck edge. Tie ends
in bow at front and trim. Press through damp cloth.
Attach thread to lst sc on lst row and work across curved edge as
follows: lst row: Make 68 sc along edge, making last sc in last sc of lst
row of Back Piece. Ch 3, turn.
2nd row: Dc in next sc, (ch 2, sk 2 sc, dc in next 2 sc) 3 times; (ch 2,
sk 1 sc, dc in next 2 sc) 14 times; (ch 2, sk 2 sc, dc in next 2 sc) 3
times (20 sps). Ch 1, turn.
4th row: Make 27 cluster patterns across, working as for 10th row of
Sacque.
9th row: Sk lst dc, sc in next dc, (2 dc in next sp, sc in next 2 dc) 8
times; (3 sc in next sp, sc in next 2 dc) 16 times; (2 dc in next sp, sc
in next 2 dc) 8 times (145 sc). Ch 2, turn.
Now work a row of shells all along outer edge of Cap, working over
decreased edge as for Sacque. Fasten off.
Run ribbon in and out of both rows of dc sps at back of Cap. Tack
ends of ribbon on wrong side. Cut remainder of ribbon in half and sew
to Cap for ties. Sew on rosettes.
BOOTEES
2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until
piece measures 1 1\4 inches. Ch 55 for ankle, sl st in first st at
beginning of last row. Fasten off. Now work in rnds as follows.
Sew edges together. Count up 8 rnds from seam just made, attach
th-read in st at center back and, with seam facing, work sc through
top of each dc on this rnd, thus forming a ridge around sole. Fasten
off.
Now work top as follows: lst rnd: Attach thread to center st at upper
edge of Toe Piece, ch 1, sc in same place where thread was
attached, work 67 more sc around (68 sc). join. Ch 3, turn.
lst row: Same as 4th row of Sacque (17 cluster patterns). Do not
join. Ch 3, turn.
With Green, make ch about 19 inches long, turn. 1st row: 2-tr cluster
in 7th ch from hook, * ch 4, 2-tr cluster in next st, skip 4-sts, 2-tr
cluster in next st, repeat from * across. Fasten off and attach Black.
Ch 1, turn.
2nd and 3rd rows: S c in each st across, ch 1, turn. Fasten off and
attach Green, ch 6, turn.
4th row: * 2-tr cluster in next s c, skip 4 sts, 2-tr cluster in next st, ch
4, repeat from * across, ch 6, turn.
5th and 6th rows: 2-tr cluster at joining of tips of clusters of row
below, * ch 4, 2-tr cluster in same place, 2-tr cluster at joining of tips
of next group, repeat from * across. Ch 6, turn. Fasten off, attach
Black. Ch 1, turn.
2nd and 3rd rnds: S c in each st around, and in 3rd st of each ch-5
work 1 s c, ch 1, 1 s c in same st. (This forms a square). Fasten off
and attach Green at center of one side.
5th and 6th rnds: Ch 4 (to count as tr), tr in same st from which ch-4
started, ch 4, 2-tr cluster in same place, 2-tr cluster in st before corner
cluster, ch 5, 2-tr cluster in corner cluster, ch 5, 2-tr cluster in next st.
Continue as before. (6th rnd will have 1 more group on each side).
Fasten off and attach Black.
Materials: Lily Double Quick, Art. 50, in Black: 2 skeins. No. 3 steel
crochet hook. 4 large marbles and 8 small marbles. Flower Holder
size: 5 x 5 1\2 inches.
Edge: (Ch 3, sl st in next sc) repeated around; join and fasten off.
Rnd 6: Like Rnd 2 but inc in every 4th sc (50 sc); join. Repeat Rnd 3.
Rnd 8: Like Rnd 2 but inc in every 5th sc (60 sc); join.
MAT—Cut cardboard for a loose fit in frame. Cut out center 3" from
bottom, 2" from other 3 sides. Cut linen 1" outside edges, pull taut
and fasten on back with gummed tape, slashing inside corners. In Lt.
Ecru, make ch 2" longer than bottom width, tr in 15th st from hook,
(ch 4, tr in next 5th st) repeated across for width (stretched). Cut off
excess ch.
ROW 2—Ch 9, turn, tr in next tr, (ch 4, tr in next tr) across to 5th st of
end ch. Repeat 4 times to cover bottom. Then work up each side (4
sps wide). Connect top corners with a ch (5 ch for each sp minus 1
ROW 2— Join Dk. Green in same end st, ch 3 and in back loops, dc
in next st, (2 dc in next, 1 dc in next) twice, hdc in sc between
scallops, * (dc in next st, 2 dc in next dc in 2 sts, hdc in sc) twice, * dc
in next st, 2 dc in next, (2 dc, 3-ch p, 2 dc) in next st, 2 dc in next, 1
.dc in next, hdc in sc. Repeat from * to *. 1 dc in next st, (2 dc in next)
3 times, 1 dc in next, sl st in 3-ch, ch 10, 9 sc on ch. Fasten off.
Cut Green muslin 1" larger all around than mat opening. Pin motifs on
muslin, following illustration, then tack lightly. Twist larkspur sprays so
flowers are on alternate sides of ch stem. When finished, stretch and
pin right-side-down, and steam and press dry thru a cloth. Fasten
with gummed tape on a 2d piece of cardboard cut 1\8" smaller than
outside of frame. Place glass and mat in frame, then tack 2d
cardboard on back of frame, with very short nails or tacks.
Work Basket
LID: Repeat Base but add edge: Ch 1, (hdc in next sc, 2 dc in next,
dc in next, hdc in next, sc in next) around. Fasten off.
Stiffen basket by rubbing and patting with a cloth dipped in hot, thick,
cooked starch. Cut a heavy white cardboard oval to fit inside base,
and weight down. Weight down Lid too, to keep it flat. Cut a long strip
of thin cardboard and roll to fit inside the basket to brace sides.
Fasten another strip snugly around outside. Pull sides up to an even
height . When perfectly dry, sew lid to sides between 8 scallops
across back edge. Give 3 coats of White Shellac.
RND 3: Repeat Rnd 2 working over the sc in that rnd; join to back lp
of 1st sc.
RND 3: Attach to center of one rope lp, * make rope for 2 1\4 inches,
sk .1 sc, sl st in next sc, sc in center of next lp; repeat from * 5 times.
Fasten off.
HANDLE: Make rope for 9 inches. Sew tog. 1 3\4 inches from ends.
Spread ends and sew to 2 lps in Rnd 4 one half inch from Handle
ends. Sew 7th Ring inside top lp of Handle. Starch and block as for
other trivet.
RND 1: Ch 2, hdc in next ch, (2 hdc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch) 9
times hdc in sl st, join with sl st in ch-2, sl st in next 2 hdc.
With wrong sides facing, sew pieces together by joining back loops of
dc's where front loops were previously worked, leaving a 4-inch
opening. Cut 2 pieces of cardboard each 4 1\4 inches in diameter,
insert cardboard and sew up opening.
With wrong side facing, sew pieces together, leaving opening large
enough to insert pincushion. Insert pincushion and sew up opening.
With Black embroider lines around pincushion.
CORD ... Cut 6 strands of Black, each 3 yards long. Twist these
strands tightly, then double and give them a twist in the opposite
direction, knot ends securely.
1st round. 4 ch, for long treble (lt: thread over needle twice). 3 ch,
making 7 in all, 1 1t into the ring, 3 ch, 1 1t into the ring, * 3 ch, 1 1t
into the ring, repeat from * until there are 8, 1 lt into the ring, after the
last lt work 3 ch, sl st into the top of the 4 ch worked from the lst 1t.
4th round. After the last sl st of the previous round work 12 ch from
the medallion, sl st into the 10th loop from the needle, into this ring
work 2 d, 5 ch, 2 d, 5 ch, 2 d, 5 ch, 2 d, 5 ch, 2 d, 5 ch, 2 d, 2 ch, 1 d
into the same d in the circle as the 12 ch was begun from, and into
the lst sp of 9 ch work 4 d, draw the thread through the lst p on the
side of the ring just worked, 6 d into the same sp of 9 ch 1 d into the t
of the previous round, * 12 ch, sl st into the 10th loop from the needle,
Join one medallion to another by the last round on the pattern the
following way: ** Begin with the small ring on the corner of the
medallion and work 12 ch, sl st into the 10th loop from the needle,
into this ring work 2 d, 3 ch, draw the thread through the 4th d from
the needle of the 10 d of the previous sp, 3 ch, 2 d into the ring, 5 ch,
2 d, 3 ch, draw the thread through the 3d p on the corner ring of the
previous pattern, 3 ch, 2 d into the ring, 5 ch, 2 d, 5 ch, 2 d, 2 ch, 1 d
into the same d as the 12 ch was begun from, 4 d into the next sp of
9 ch, draw the thread through the lst p on the side of ring just worked,
6 ch, 1 d into the t of previous round, draw the thread through the 3d
p on the next ring on the side of previous pattern, 10 d into the next
sp of 9 ch, 1 d into the d of the previous round, 12 ch, sl st into the
10th loop from the needle, into this ring work 2 d, 3 ch, draw the
thread through the 4th d from the needle of the 10 d of the previous
sp, 2 ch, 2 d into the ring, 5 ch, 2 d, 3 ch, draw the thread through the
3d p on the next corner ring of the previous pattern, 3 ch, 2 d into the
ring, 5 ch, 2 d, 5 ch, 2 d, 2 ch, 1 d into the d on which the 12 ch was
begun from, repeat from ** for all the joinings. After 2 rows are joined
together there should be 4 p of 5 ch joined to each other at the
corners of each pattern. When joining down the sides and across the
bottom there should be a pattern or small flower on each side joined
by the p at the top. There are 18 medallions which form the bag.
Around the top of the bag make 1 row of t (thread over needle twice),
except when there is a p, when you make a single crochet. There are
3 medallions which make the flap. Join them together, following the

Join the thread to the corner of bag, ch 65, draw the ch through lst
mesh between flap and bag and join with d to a large bone ring, ch 65

skip one mesh and pass the chain through the next, 1 d to ring, ch

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 ch; in next ch make sc,

Place these 2 pieces so that loops along edges correspond, and work
edging over both thicknesses as follows:
