neighborhood safer and more enjoyable.
You will not only see some of the issues with the
existing street design, but local residents, parents,
and business owners will share their experiences.
We hope youll see the tremendous
opportunites to create a network of safer, more
accessible streets that also function as beautiful

INTRO + SAFETY
SENIOR CENTER
This intersection represents an opportunity to
better connect two sides of Escuela Avenue.
Escuela is only half a mile long, but is a key city
street that connects Castro School, Rengstorff
Park, the Senior and Teen Centers, and other
city services that provide for persons who tend
to drive less or not have access to a car.
The new signal is much appreciated, but
tightened corners would make walking across
safer and more enjoyable.
Valeria Craven, a nearby resident, and
employee at Castro Elementary will speak
about the challenges at this intersection.
Ortega Avenue is a neighborhood street that
connects residents to Klein Park. However, it
is often used as a shortcut by drivers to access
El Camino. Given the generous width of the
street, tbere may be opportunltes to aoo tratc
calming, landscaping, and pedestrian crossing
improvements to better connect the park with
the neighborhood.
Howie Meyerson and his daughter Dana
will share their experiences at this location and
how it impacted their perception on biking and
wlaking.
John & Karen Farrell have operated
Bumble Bee Health Foods since 1957 and have
seen the neighborhood grow over the years
in regards to street safety. Elena Pacheco,
member of Community Action Team (CAT),
will also share her story.
A nearby intersection recently received a new
signal, but there are opportunites for sidewalk
improvements along this stretch of California
Street. The walkways are narrow due to signs,
poles, and other obstructions, and theres a
dearth of street trees.
Ariel T. Mendez lives in the SWAN
neighborhood and bikes to Stanford 3-5 times
a week. He will share his take on California
Street in relation to safety.
Sborellne 8oulevaro ls one ot tbe most oltcult
streets to cross in this area due to its width.
Nowhere else is the road 6 lanes wide and the
roads size encourages drivers to speed.
Thida Cornes, Parks Commissioner and
Jack Miller, bike enthusiast, will share their
experiences navigating this intersection and
nearby streets.
