Assignment Questions

Due: 11.55pm 31st August 2012 Rev 3

This is the third assessment item due for CIV1501, semester 2, 2012.

Due Date: 11.55pm 31st August 2012 Total Marks: 150 marks Assignment completion instructions:
Ensure that you: Attempt as many questions as possible. Write clearly and set out your work in a tidy and professional manner, illegible or badly set out work will not be marked. o Set out your working so that it is clear from where your numbers have been derived and why you are undertaking each step (E.g. using statements such as Fx = 0; as appropriate), this is modelled throughout the textbook. Clearly differentiate between vectors and scalars in your working, using the notation discussed in your studybook, Module 2.

Start a new page of working for each question. Draw a free body diagram at the start of your working for each question. You must include and label all known and unknown forces, axes and relevant dimensions or geometry. (Refer to Chapter 5.2-5.3 of the text.) This is an important part of your problem solution, you should also include additional diagrams if necessary to clarify your working method. Report all answers to three significant figures; carry a minimum of four significant figures through your calculations. Show the correct units with your final answer(s). Clearly identify all final answers requested in the question by summarising them at the end of your working for the question. Use the methods and notation in the solution of problems that are consistent with the relevant sections of the course material, otherwise the question may not be marked.

Handwritten calculations and diagrams must be produced and submitted for marking.
Questions follow the course material that is presented in the studybook and textbook. It is strongly recommended that you complete your study of the relevant section of course material, including sufficient Activity questions and online tutorial questions, prior to attempting the assignment questions.

Assignment Submission
You must submit your original working to the examiner for marking via the Assignment Submission Box provided on the course studydesk site (Assessment Area). Signed Assignment coversheets must be included as the first page of your assignment. You will need to download the coversheet through your UConnect Student centre, print it and sign it. You must retain a copy of your submitted working for your own reference and be able to produce it if requested by the examiner. Working submitted for marking must be clear and easily legible or it may not be marked.

Students Own Work

All assessable work in this course is to be the individual students own work. It is unacceptable for students to share solutions to assessable work in any manner. Violations of this principle are regarded as Academic Misconduct and will be dealt with under the USQ Academic Regulations.

Question 1 15 marks Before attempting this question you should complete your study up to and including Module 2. Three cables exert forces on a bracket as shown. (i) (ii) (iii) If the resultant of the forces has a magnitude of 400N and a line of action along the aa axis find the magnitude and direction, , of force, F3, in the third cable. Sketch the arrangement of the three applied forces relative to x-y coordinate axes. Write the three applied forces in Cartesian form.

Question 2 20 marks Before attempting this question you should complete your study up to and including Module 2. A pre-cast concrete slab weighing 200kN is lifted by means of three chains connected by a smooth ring at A. If point A is directly above the centre of gravity G of the slab determine the tension in all three chains.

Question 3 15 marks Before attempting this question you should complete your study up to and including Module 2. Find the resultant force acting at point D and write it in Cartesian form. (Note that CD is parallel to the y-axis, the 40N force acts parallel to the z-axis and the 30N force is parallel to the x-axis.) Find the magnitude of the projected component of the resultant force acting along the line AD.

Question 4 15 marks Before attempting this question you should complete your study up to and including Module 3. Find the tension in the three weightless chains (AC, BC & CD) and the spring DE that support the loads shown. Find the un-stretched length of DE if k = 150 kN/m.

Question 5 10 marks Before attempting this question you should complete your study up to and including Module 4. One fork of the lifting assembly of a garbage truck which empties industrial waste bins is shown. If the bin exerts a force of 10kN on the fork, the weight of member ABC is 3kN acting at point B and the weights of the other members can be neglected, calculate the reactions at the pin at A and the force in the hydraulic cylinder BD. Assume all pins are smooth.

Question 6 15 marks Before attempting this question you should complete your study up to and including Module 4. Determine the magnitude of the moment of the force F about the baseline CA of the tripod ABCD, if F = {40i -30j -100k}N.
