Unison Scripture
Mark 5:35-43 (NIV)
While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. Your daughter is dead, they said. Why bother the teacher anymore? 36Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, Dont be afraid; just believe.
35

He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39He went in and said to them, Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep. 40But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the childs father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41He took her by the hand and said to her, Talitha koum! (which means Little girl, I say to you, get up!).
37

Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

SERMON NOTES/PRAYER CONCERNS

Lenten Meditation
THE UNFOLDING MESSAGE THERE IS FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY

veryone needs food and sustenance. We do not know how Jesus and his disciples managed this. There was, of course, a strong tradition of hospitality in those days, but we do not know how they got along from day to day. The only suggestion comes in a side reference in Johns story of the woman who anointed Jesus with precious ointment. John tells us that Judas carried the disciples bag and may have stolen from it. (12:6). However they handled the need, Jesus did not let people go hungry. He let his disciples pick and eat grain from the fields, even though it was the Sabbath, when work was forbidden. A major evidence of Jesus awareness of peoples hunger comes with the story of his feeding the multitude which followed him to a place away from food sources. The disciples felt helpless, but Jesus found a way. Human needs were provided for. (Luke 9:12-17) The hunger Jesus cared most about, though, was food for the spirit. Our souls need to be fed and nourished. Jesus prayer, Give us this day our daily bread! speaks of this need as well as a physical need. We have to have regular spiritual sustenance. Often, this kind of food comes through prayer. Prayer is a spiritual power source. Mark (9:14-29) gives us an interesting illustration of this. The disciples had tried unsuccessfully to cure a young boy who had an evil spirit. After Jesus later accomplished this, they asked why they had failed to do so. Jesus answered that this can be accomplished only through prayer. To be fed by Gods spirit, we need prayer. A second step in having enough food is our willingness to share what we have. The boy, who offered the disciples his loaves and fish, demonstrates this. He gave willingly and freely. As a result, he and the multitude ate all they wanted. Living with an open, expectant and generous spirit, we find spiritual food in abundance and are enabled to walk with power.

Fasting
Fasting for the Lenten Season
This year, God has called us to Raise Leaders and Develop Disciples. I am calling a church-wide fast this Lenten season. Fasting is a spiritual discipline designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ. We do not fast to lose weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. This year 2013, God will reveal Gods purpose and plan in your life if you dare fast, pray, study and learn the power of quiet time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and spend time with his Father in the mountains, to pray, study, reflect, meditate and center his spirit. If fasting and prayer were the disciplines of Jesus, should not this be followed by us? Join with us this season and witness a breakthrough as we fast, pray, study, reflect, meditate and learn the power of quiet time. Question: I have never fasted before? Answer: Consult your doctor first!* Fasting is not the removal of all food from your diet. Fasting is learning to discipline your mind, body and spirit to remove something you know hinders your ability to function at your highest capacity, from your life or diet. Question: Is fasting biblical? Answer: Fasting is biblical. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, fasting was used by the people of God to prepare for a spiritual challenge, hear Gods voice before making a major decision, and for removing destructive forces in your life. Fast #1 - Fasting to confront destructive forces February 13 February 19 Eat all your meals before 6:00 p.m. February 20 February 26 Eat only two meals before 6:00 p.m. February 27 March 5 - Eat only one meal a day before 6:00 p.m. March 6 March 12 Drink only juices, water and/or tea March 13 March 19 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m. March 20 March 31 Slowly begin to add meat to your diet Fast #2 The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, could fast eating only fruits and vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king. February 13 February 19 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m. February 20 February 26 Eat only two meals a day before 6:00 p.m. February 27 March 5 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m. March 6 March 12 Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added. March 13 March 19 Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added March 20 March 31 Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m. Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from your diet or life. One type of fasting is to remove certain foods from your diet, such as fried foods, sweets, sodas or refined sugar and/or flour.
*Please seek the advice of your primary care provider/ doctor before beginning a fast that involves restricting food/calories and/or medication. Your doctor can help you design a fasting plan that protects your health and well-being. This is extremely important if you are pregnant or have a medical condition. Medical condition examples include, but are not limited to those who have a chronic disease such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, recent surgery, etc.

FASTING FOR THE LENTEN SEASON

To Do Justice
Dear Trinity family, We are asking you today to sign a letter requesting Mayor Rahm Emanuel to consider supporting the call for a democratically elected Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC) over the Chicago Police Department, proposed by the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR). This letter comes on the heels of the Second People's Hearing on Police Crimes, which was held February 23rd at the University of Chicago. Both our Senior Pastor and our Pastor Emeritus were supporters of the call for these hearings. Testimony from across the city was heard from citizens who were victims of police misconduct, disrespect, and brutality. The CAARPR believes that a CPAC is essential in the effort to repair the broken relationship between the police department and the communities they are sworn to protect. Law enforcement has traditionally resisted the establishment of such bodies, arguing that law enforcement officers, like lawyers and doctors, are professionals and therefore are in the best position to discipline themselves. But, it would be fairly easy to make the argument that no professional group has been effective in "policing" itself as there are just too many vested interests and interlocking relationships. Most police departments around the country have an internal affairs division that is responsible for investigating misconduct allegations and disciplining officers, but internal review measures have not always proven effective. Critics disagree with the notion of the police policing themselves and find such a system to be inherently flawed and lacking in objectivity. Consequently, many citizens and civic organizations support aggressive external controls as the most effective means to combat police misconduct and brutality. Chicago has spent over $45 million in taxpayer money to settle over 400 police misconduct suits between January 2009 and November 2011. Please consider the call for establishing a common trust and accountability between the Chicago Police Department and the communities it serves by supporting an elected, unbiased civilian accountability council. Thank you and God Bless, Kevin Tyson Trinity UCC Justice Watch Team

RAISING LEADERS and DEVELOPING DISCIPLES

January Matthew 16:24 (NLT) Then Jesus said to his disciples, If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me." February Luke 4:18-19 (NIV) The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lords favor. March Luke 10:19 (NIV) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. April Romans 10:1-2 (NLT) Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. May 1 Corinthians 13:8 (NIV) Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. June Romans 5:8 (NIV) But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. July Philippians 4:13 (NLT) For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. August Jeremiah 1-7 (NLT) The Lord replied, Dont say, Im too young, for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you." September Isaiah 1:3 (NLT) Even an ox knows its owner, and a donkey recognizes its masters carebut Israel doesnt know its master. My people dont recognize my care for them. October Isaiah 40:29 (KJV) He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. November John 17:21 (KJV) That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. December Matthew 1:23 (KJV) Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
