Sparking Creativity at Ferrari

Learning Points: Creativity needs support from environment; the company provides good environment for employees to become creative. Creativity is for everyone, includes all people from every levels in the organization structures Creativity can comes from many different topics (Jazz, sculptures, photography, languages, chef, etc.). It synthesizes ability. Recognition (reward system) and appreciation in any kind Fun at work and health-conscious

Lessons learned
1. Based on my own experiences In the place where I work, we have the same working atmosphere and culture built such as in Ferarri. Our organization initiates and/or facilitates the staffs with many activities to bring out our talents and hidden potentials, such as in office gathering, birthday events for staffs, outdoor meeting, team building, etc. all of that activities can develop our skills and knowledge to new things or even strengthen our existing talents in organizing events, public speaking, entertainment and art skills (singing, decorating, multimedia). Most of the staffs really enjoy doing these and not consider it as extra-working; on the other hand, the organization can recognize some of the staffs with multi talents. Other activities are initiated by the staffs, after working hours such as create various clubs (watch movies, singing karaoke, sports, cooking, English conversation, dancing, and/or just hang out together and sharing about lives). The interesting thing is that some of the activity-started-by-staff is adopted by our organization and make it as official program such as doing sport every Friday morning and practice English every Friday. So, just like the Ferrari who provide an environment that nurtures the development of creativity in their organization, so do we. I also learned that Ferrari manages their creativity source by inviting external parties, mostly creative artists or well-known people that can inspired all of the employee. We also use external sources to initiate ideas for developing creative solution or new methods. Since our organization deals with community development and social issue, we have to be aware of external changes (politics, culture, environment, economics, law, and technology) and always be ready to adapt or contextualize our action for any current situation that happens in Indonesia.

Human Resources Department has a strong role and function in managing the people in Ferrari. Ferrari's continued success is thanks to its talented and dedicated team of employees and the two men who have provided unrivalled, strong leadership Enzo Ferrari and Luca di Montezemolo. They manage their employee as individual/ personal, in groups (High performing team), and also as the whole company of Ferrari.

Marketing Management

Ferrari sells idea and creativity in their cars. They have managed their brand in such ways in order to make it strong in positioning and well-known by people globally (the Prancing Horse as an icon of Italian design, exclusivity and technology). They enter into a niche market such as racing car (Formula 1) and sport cars; and not only in automotive, their products including perfumes, watches, clothing, accessories, etc. If were talking about new product development and product life cycle, Ferrari is one of the best in innovation.

Operational Management

Ferrari dont explicitly explain about any operational management in their managing creativity outline but I believe that theres a sequence and different levels of creativity developed by its employee from the not-so-creative until become very creative or able to innovate. Operation management tells us about progress achievement and goals (target) for each employee in Ferrari, though Mario Almondo said that they dont want to push or directly relate all the club activities into creativity at work but theyre encouraging employees to make the link between the inspirations they get into their professional activity in Ferrari.

Knowledge and Innovation

Ferrari knows that the best performance is only achieved if employees feel empowered and appreciated. Ferrari also believes that the quality of its cars cannot be separated from the lives of the people working at the Ferrari plant. That's why the working environment and welfare of the people working there are the most important priorities. Ferrari is a company that values excellence, so it is always looking for progressive people who can help it innovate. Ferrari also values a person's freedom to express him or herself is given highest priority, because Ferrari believes this is the key to creative and successful team collaboration.

Business Law & Business Ethics

The Ferrari plant is a model work environment. The philosophy behind the creation of Ferrari's production areas lea dictated that buildings and their functions should be designed with the needs of employees firmly in mind. This philosophy became known as Formula Uomo. Consequently, the

newly renovated Ferrari complex now combines carefully designed lighting systems, green areas (there are over 100 trees along the roads around the factory), a new restaurant, climate control, noise damping, and special measures aimed at reducing environmental impact, with advanced technologies. The Ferrari complex was specifically designed to architecturally reinforce the synergic relationship between work and results.1 From the statement above, we can see that Ferrari really concern about their employees, their human rights and health issue; and also for environmental condition as well. Ferrari shows the world that their interest is not only in innovative cars, but also considers ecological and giving social responsibility (CSR) for many beneficiaries.
