For decades, Sri Lanka experienced civil war between the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan government. During the early parts of 2009, the war reached a climax, ending the death of tens of thousands of civilians, military personnel and the rebels. This book is based on the stories captured by Frances Harrison, the resident BBC correspondent in Sri Lanka from 2000-2004, who interviewed survivors, whose horrific stories she recounts in this book.

This publication discusses the potential, motivation, challenges and determinants of corporate engagement for conflict transformation. GENDER & WOMEN IN FOCUS

Gender and pre-school education: changing perceptions. By Chitrangani Abhayadeva. Published by Centre for Womens Research (CENWOR), Colombo, 2008. Gender and pre-school education is about the children at early childhood stage in selected areas in the Western Province. The main objective of this study is to observe the socialisation process and gender discrimination in pre schools. This research was conducted to identify behavior and attitudes of the children towards gender equality and to introduce gender equality practices within children. Children were interviewed individually and their behavior patterns and teacher behaviors were observed to carry out this research.

Over the past 30 years, research has already been carried out on gender and education. This study explains how children in pre schools tend to change their behavior and attitude even being at an early life. The main purpose of this study is to examine the socialisation process and gender differences including the methodology of education. This research explains that in order to have a community who understands equal gender relations, the education system itself must be transformed. This study aims to make a change by informing both advocacy and action to introduce systems to promote equal gender relations within children for a better life and a better community. This study has been done to identify the gender roles and the support networks of spouses of migrant workers in Sri Lanka. This research talks about the resources and the strategies of migrant worker families, differences of resources between the spouses of male and female migrant workers, the changes of the migrants family dynamics and many more areas in relation to gender and migration. The study mainly focuses on how the male and female migrants impact the family dynamics and the differences among them which is important to Sri Lanka.

This study examines the prevalence, determinants and causes of torture and other forms of cruel inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in Sri Lanka. It provides a comprehensive examination of the legal and institutional framework in Sri Lanka where torture is concerned, and an assessment of whether the system lives up to international standards. The study seeks to determine how legal and institutional mechanisms intended to promote justice and protect against abuse function in practice, in order to identify possible gaps in the system that may lead to the occurrence of torture and CIDTP.

This study talks about violence, punishment, cruelty, brutality, rough treatments, and humiliation that operate in Sri Lanka. This publication was initiated after conducting an enumeration in the 9 Provinces and 25 Districts including sub divisions. This guide is a useful resource to data users, planners, policy makers, academics and researchers.

This issue includes information on housing, materials used for housing construction, occupied housing units, sources of drinking water, toilet facilities and so and so forth. Information is presented under the two categories of housing unit information and household information. This research article highlights ways to identify these problems through their feedback and to find solutions to prevent discrimination and problems.

We believe that happiness and wellbeing stands on development and prosperity but research has shown that in most situations, that a persons finances have no significance with happiness. This research was carried out in the Badulla District to identify the satisfactory levels of happiness in men and women. Though there is an acceptable level of happiness, the research was able to find out the reasons why men and women are stressed and not happy.

This article focuses on the impact of infrastructure and privatisation projects on the displaced people and what they have to go through. Even though infrastructure projects provide livelihood opportunities for the community, some people are displaced from their homes, lands and crops. Losing their homelands create problems including food security issues that lead to the inaccessibility of nutritious food impacting on their earnings drastically. These factors negatively contribute to poor health conditions and wellbeing causing underweight children and malnutrition. Displacement, thus, negatively impacts on the society which needs serious consideration so that negative impacts can be minimised.

AUDIO-VISUAL RESOURCES ON SOCIAL ISSUES

Beyond 60 by Centre for Poverty Analysis, Colombo 2012. Sri Lanka is currently in the advances stages of a demographic transition and is the fastest ageing country in South Asia. The documentary, produced by CEPA with support from the World Bank Civil Society Fund, explores the reality of the elderly, revealing that they remain active and productive well into their later years, either because they have to or because they want to. It recognises their continued contribution to society and the need to protect their rights. Kanchivaram. Directed by Priyadharshan, starring Prakash Raj, Shreya Reddy, Shammu et.al. 2008. The film is set in the thick of Kanchi's silk weaving industry and tells the story of a common man caught amongst the forces that be, the society he lives in and the conflict between one's adopted ideals and individual dreams. The film is an analysis by the director on why communism took a backseat all over the world, because those who preach it could never practice it. As a race, humans are ambitious and at some level, also self-centered, which goes against the dictates of collectivism.

Shanghai. Directed by Dibakar Banerjee, starring Emraan Hashmi, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, Prosenjit Chatterjee and Amin Raj. June, 2012. In a bustling Indian city gearing up for the latest celebrated political elections, four individuals find themselves tied up into a gruesome game of crime and politics. A young activist encounters a shocking and disturbing road accident which leaves a prominent political figure in critical condition. A lone girl on the street believes it to be a murder. A porn film maker claims to have documented proof that will bring the government down. A high ranking bureaucrat is brought in by the government for damage control. As days go by, the individuals discover a hidden secret in the governments sector: a vision of a new metropolis, a pipe dream, a dream called Shanghai.

Mille soya. Directed by Boodee Keerthisena, starring Kamal Addaraarachchi, Jackson Anthony, Sangeetha Weeraratne, Mahendra Perera, Tim Deussen et.al. 2004. The film is about a group of young Sri Lankan musicians illegally migrating to Italy in a baggage compartment of a bus and about their lost dreams that are caught between a civil war and corrupt politics through their journey to reach the land of hope. During the course of this journey, in addition to meeting death inside baggage compartment of buses and in snow storms, the group is subjected to deceptions by the intermediaries, betrayals by their own friends, arrests while crossing the borders illegally.
