THE BOSTON MARATHON Jahde.

Boisgirard
Aim: In this task you will be looking at the speeds of runners who have run the Boston Marathon. In 1897 the first Boston Marathon took place with 15 people running. Today, over 9000 people run in the 26 mile race each year. Below is a table showing the winning runners and their times for 1997 through to 2001. Year 1997 1998 Mens Winner L.Aguta, Kenya L.Aguta, Kenya J.Chebet, Kenya E.Lagat, Kenya Time 2:10:34 2:07:34 Womens Winner F.Roba, Ethiopia F.Roba, Ethiopia F.Roba, Ethiopia C.Ndereba, Kenya C.Ndereba, Kenya Time 2:26:23 2:23:21

Use the data in the table to answer the following questions. 1): Convert each winners time to hours. You can do this in the following way: Time in = Number of hours + Number of minutes + Number of seconds hours -------------------------- ---------------------------

Much improved Jahde, please look back at the womens data as your calculations were incorrect. Always aim to simplify your fractions and include the units where appropriate so as your results make sense within the context of the question.

Write each time in hours as a mixed number. ): Represent each winners time in hours as a decimal. Round your answers to the nearest thousandth.

A good try Jahde, but I am missing the data for 1. Whilst the womens data was incorrect, they were correct for the values you found in Q.1 and you had justified your work which I was impressed by. Well done Jahde! 3): Find the average (mean) speed of each winner by dividing 26 by the winners time in decimal form. Take care here Jahde, these were actually not correct. You were instructed to divide 26 by the winning times, not the other way around.....look at these again now please. See me if youre still not sure. Round your answers to the nearest thousandth. (You may use a calculator here!) ): Make a double Bar Graph of the mens and womens average winning speeds for each year. 5): Which male ran the marathon in the least amount of time? What was his average speed? L.Aguta, Kenya:0.081 The answer is actually M.Tanui, with an average speed of 12.230 mph. How does his average speed compare to the other male runners average speeds? Is this what you expected? Why or why not? It was pretty unexpected because 7 and 9 and 10 are pretty far apart and I was sort of expecting it because he did the run a couple times. Ok, a start.....a comment like the person who ran the fastest should have the best time would also have been sufficient. 6): Which female ran the marathon in the least amount of time? What was her average speed?

F.Roba, Ethiopia:0.078 Good How does her average speed compare to the other female runners average speed compare to the other female runners average speeds? I was not too surprised because she did it so many times and all of the scores were pretty close together. Ok, but a statement like her speed was greater than everyone elses could have also worked. 7): Now use the Internet to find the winners of the Boston Marathon in 2012 and any other years you may discover. How do their average speeds compare to the fastest average speeds from Questions 5 and 6? Men 1 Wesley Korir 2 Levy Matebo 3 Bernard Kipyego Women 1 Sharon Cherop 2 Jemima Jelagat Sumgong 3 Georgina Rono Wheelchair Men 1 Josh Cassidy 2 Kurt Fearnley 3 Kota Hokinoue Wheelchair Women 1 Shirley Reilly 2 Wakako Tsuchida 3 Diane Roy Good research Jahde, well done! They were a lot different because most of the people in first where in the 3040 somewhere even a bit higher so I found that interesting.

Well done Jahde. Please look now on Managebac for further comments. Below is the rubric for Criterion D which you will be summatively assessed on.

I would like you to aim to explain your findings throughout, providing a detailed explanation of the importance of your findings in connection to accuracy where appropriate. Also look to see if anything could be real-life where appropriate. Try to justify your findings and the degree of improved with your method. Good luck!!!
