Internship Project Problem of Practice Ideas: Two Options SLT/SIT Members: Please briefly look over both of these options; we will vote in a brief meeting on Monday, November 19th regarding which Problem of Practice will be the topic of Laurens internship project here at Belmont. Thanks in advance for your help and cooperation! Option 1: K-2 Hispanic Students in Reading n Group of approximately 20 kids (last years School Report Card showed that only 38% of Hispanic students in 3-5 passed both reading and mathout of 19 kids, and 2010-2011 was @ 35%-- a drop from the 2009-2010 percentage of 54% out of 11 kids). We have had an influx of Hispanic students over the past 2 years, and their percent of proficiency has not been increasing, but rather dropping. n Theory of Action: Preparing them w/ stronger early literacy skills in K-2 (as evidenced by DIBELS progress) will help with the testing data in 3-5. n Goals: Increased literacy growth among Hispanic/Latino students in K-2 (according to DIBELS data) n Outcomes: Growth on DIBELS EOY assessment, continued growth on DIBELS progress-monitoring, increased student engagement (especially in reading time) among Hispanic students n Potential Strategies: ESL teacher working with grade level PLCs @ least once a month, ESL instruction connected to grade-level objectives, additional progress monitoring w/ ESL students (perhaps by reading coaches? Heather?), book club w/ tutors weekly or bi-weekly (led by 3rd grade tutors/administration)

Option 2: Low Parent Involvement among Low-Income African-American Families n After looking @ our schools Teacher Working Conditions survey results, ongoing teacher efficacy surveys, conversations w/ grade levels and individual teachers, etc., community and parent involvement is a HUGE gap for us (both perceived and otherwise). n Theory of Action: If parents a) feel more welcomed by school staff and administrators, and b) they are met both where they are and at the school building, then they will be more authentically and productively involved in the functioning of the school. n Goals: Increase in authentic parent and community involvement, among ALL parents. n Outcomes: Increase in parent volunteer hours @ school events, increased range of parent involvement (i.e. MORE parents of MORE students in ACADEMIC ways), increase in positive communication between staff and parents, etc. n Potential Strategies: Facilitate joint meetings/events between PoPS and PTA, PTA Board/staff members initiate parent volunteer hours drive, parent outreach/Parent University @ Creekside w/ Mr. Carey (w/ teachers attending), encourage at least 5 positive calls home/mth by each teacher for 5 different students, etc.
