MUSIC FOR FILMS:

By MelGuapo

Confessions of an ambient music and television soundtrack listener in the modern age
When I first started making music, I was interested, I suppose, in the personalities I could play, the different figures I could be. Um I lost interest in that. I didnt want myself to be in the center of the music anymore. And so I begun [sic] experimenting a lot with trying to remove the personality in some ways for example, by making more than one voice, so that it stops being a single figure in the middle of the picture. And I tried singing using nonsense words nonsensical words using words backwards putting strange sounds on my voice different ways of reducing the importance of the figure in the picture. Because what I was starting to get interested in was not the figure but the landscape behind the figure. And I found the figure more and more a problem, because its like with a painting, you know, if you have a picture of a landscape, you look at that, and your eye moves freely over the landscape. If you put a human figure in there, even if its a tiny, little one, it becomes the center of your attention. Its very difficult to ignore that. You know, humans relate to other humans. And with music, that became a problem, because I felt that as long as I was in the center of the picture, it made you, the listener, outside the picture. Now, if I took myself out of that picture, it left an open field, a sound field of some kind, which invited you in. And I felt that by removing my own personality as represented by my voice, I opened up that music in a new way. I made a space that people could come into. - Brian Eno, regarded as the founder of ambient music Endless chatter is the human condition. We are a babbling species. We must continually tell ourselves that were all right. And weve got to let everyone around us know that fact too. Its an exhausting thing, and nobodys to blame because its our nature. But its exhausting all the same, especially to a words -man like myself. I understand the world foremost through words and what they mean, but words are exhausting. Thats why they say that silence is golden. Its also why they say that Hell is Other People. I didnt realize this fact for a very long time. When I finally did realize this fact, I found a direct correlation in the rise of how much ambient music I was listening to, which was strange to me because for years and years, I neither understood nor appreciated the genre. I thought it was a little ridiculous and a bit smug, to be perfectly honest. However, I soon found myself craving those moments of stepping into a sonic picture and out of my world for a brief respite from the chatter. And this led to another deep appreciation of ambient musics older brother: television and film soundtracks. David Lynchs Twin Peaks soundtrack is one of my absolute favorites. Angelo Badalamenti creates a world of mystery and strangeness. It sets a repetitive and waiting tone, never moving very far out of first gear. Its the perfect escape from the worlds chatter and will take you someplace else a place where the world moves slower, like everything is under water. Theres tension, but the music never quite loses its cool. There is one thing that I have learned in life: It is always the things that I neither understand nor appreciate that I come to find myself most attracted to.

On the Corner
Louies & Louies Too
Where everything is under ten dollars just what every college student wants to hear!

By JordanAttebury

Louies on Campus Corner is standard fare for ravenous college kids. It offers hearty American pub food that wont break the bank like burgers and pizza. Oh, the pizza its pretty much the symbol of Louies. Advertisements and billboards alike hone in on the cheesy, carby goodness sometimes cradled by a youthful blonde. Yes, its casual dining and all the college girls go there. Just sayin. Wanting to know what its like for myself, I went in one Friday evening after a tough workweek. The barbecue chicken and cheese pizza seemed like a good way to go, boasting smoky bacon and sweet red onions on top. My fianc ordered a frosty, tall Sam Adams draft, creating the perfect accompaniment to the all-American cuisine. While we waited, there were plenty of televisions displaying the big games of the night. We were entertained as we waited for our food. The ambience of the restaurant was relaxed; there was plenty of beer-passing and televised sports. I could definitely walk in with a messy ponytail and sweats perfect for concluding a day of studying. Once dinner finally came, I was excited to sink my teeth into the thick slab of pizza on my plate. At just $8.99 for a sizeable personal pizza, I couldnt complain. But it was an indulgent bite of gooey cheese, tangy barbecue sauce, and crispy crust that was perfectly doughy and warm on the inside. One can also never go wrong with bacon. Yes, the pizza is worth the hype. Each day, Louies also offers a special. My personal favorite was the red pepper and Gouda soup creamy and sweet with a bite. (It should totally be on the menu all the time, FYI!) I bypassed the buffalo chicken wrap the last time I was there, but spicy buffalo sauce mingled with the cooling effect of bleu cheese is always a delicious idea. Dont forget the appetizers southwestern egg rolls are perfectly flaky on the outside and smoky on the inside. Yum! But whats Louies Too? Ive heard of Chilis Too, you might say. Well, Louies Too offers a nightlife atmosphere complete with pool tables and a full bar. Smoking is also an option mind you, its only one of three places on campus corner that allows smoking indoors. Again, if youve had a tough workweek, its literally across the street from the University of Oklahoma. You can flee from your fiasco of an exam and hit the bars! Not that Im advocating coping with your problems through drinking, but we all have those days! Louies Too is one of the many options on Campus Corner for socializing and grabbing refreshments. You can get dinner at Louies before proceeding to Louies Too. Then the remainder of the Campus Corner hotspots await. Like many of the bars in Norman, Louies Too offers drink specials. Check them out in this issue, and get yourself over there and enjoy yourself! That might be just what you need to do after the saddening end of spring break.

Time to Go Dancing
At one point the University of Oklahoma mens basketball team had the longest active streak of making post-season appearances, a streak that lasted 25 straight years. Then came the lean years in Sooner basketball. Jeff Capel made an Elite Eight run with Blake Griffin, and that was pretty much it. After that came Lon Kruger, a man who coached four teams previous to this, to an NCAA tournament appearance. He will set a record this year when he leads his fifth team, the Oklahoma Sooners, into the field of 68 teams. The Sooner team with its seniors like Steven Pledger, Sam Grooms, Andrew Fitzgerald and its leader, Romero Osby, will experience their first trip to the tournament, and they have earned it. The improvement in the team from last year to this year is very noticeable. If you ignore a few games (like the loss to Oklahoma State and of course the collapse in Texas), this team has only played poorly in two games, that being an early-season loss to the number one team, Gonzaga, and the lopsided loss to the Cyclones in Ames. As it sits now, the Sooners are in good position to be in third place in the final standings in the Big 12 and would also be in position for a possible third game with the dysfunctional Baylor Bears. Depending on what happens in Stillwater on the final day of the regular season, the Sooners may not meet the Kansas Jayhawks until the finals. The selection show should be an interesting one for the Sooners. If they finish well, I can see them up to a sixth seed in the tournament or as low as a 10th seed, depending on how they finish the Big 12 tournament. The good part is that the Sooners are in the dance again and Sooner basketball is relevant on the national landscape. This has been an incredibly fun team to cover this year between the players on the court to the Three Band led by James Fraschilla that keeps energy high on the bench. I say again that this team deserves to be where they are right now. Romero Osby is clearly the leader on the court, leading in scoring, but the offense goes hand-in-hand with Pledgers performance, and he has played really well down the stretch. How well, you ask? I saw a stat today that said the Sooners over the last eight games which equals 330 minutes of game time have only trailed 24 minutes and 24 seconds and just 6:23 in the last five games leading up to the game against TCU to close out the year.
You can follow Chris Joseph on ... I wish more fans had made it out to the LNC to see this team and what is to come for Sooner basketball. For those of you that came, cheered and made your presence @chrisjoseph1400 known, I say thank you for a job well done. The season is far from over, and if this year in And listen to his show 360 Sports on Sports Talk 1400 college basketball has shown us anything, its that anything is possible.
