See more about this Top 10 HDR Mistakes eBook here! We have a variety of downloadable PDF eBooks that can get you even more information about HDR and other subjects. These have been very successful and we plan on adding more soon! This first eBook about HDR Mistakes is unique because I actually use 10 of my old, horrible HDRs and talk about the mistakes I made. It should save you countless hours of pain and wonder!
WHAT IS HDR?
HDR is short for High Dynamic Range. It is a post-processing method of taking either one image or a series of images, combining them, and adjusting the contrast ratios to do things that are virtually impossible with a single aperture and shutter speed. I would say that about 75% of my images use the technique, and if you are new to it, then you may notice a slightly different look and feel to my photographs. You should also probably note that HDR is a very broad categorization, and I really hate categorization. My process starts with using basic HDR techniques, but then there are many more steps to help the photos look more lets say evocative. I can talk a little bit more about the philosophy behind the photography style here for a quick moment. You might consider that the way the human brain keeps track of imagery is not the same way your computer keeps track of picture files. There is not one aperture, shutter speed, etc. In fact, sometimes when you are in a beautiful place or with special people and you take photos have you ever noticed when you get back and show them to people you have to say, Well, you really had to be there. Even great photographers with amazing cameras can only very rarely grab the scene exactly as they saw it. Cameras, by their basic-machine-nature, are very good at capturing images, lines, shadows, shapes but they are not good at capturing a scene the way the mind remembers and maps it. When you are actually there on the scene, your eye travels back and forth, letting in more light in some areas, less light in others, and you create a patchwork-quilt of the scene. Furthermore, you will tie in many emotions and feelings into the imagery as well, and those get associated right there beside the scene. Now, you will find that as you explore the HDR process, that photos can start to evoke those deep memories and emotions in a more tangible way. Its really a wonderful way of tricking your brain into experiencing much more than a normal photograph. I will post a few interesting HDR photographs that I have taken that people seem to like. This first image below is the first HDR photograph ever to hang in the Smithsonian Institution in D.C. I think this goes to show how mainstream and accepted HDR can be, if the technique is properly applied.

Within budget of $800 I can recommend Canon T3i with kit lens (18-55mm) for starters or with 18-135mm lens (costs $200 more). You can get it on Amazon.com, they deliver rather fast if you are in the USA. Check it out the camera here: http://amzn.to/HWusoi - I like that the camera has rotating LCD screen so it's easier to take pictures from higher or lower perspectives than the usual eye level.. If you are getting the camera in Europe, the european model of the camera is called Canon EOS 600D.
Thanks for sharing great HDR tutorials. Regards, Nikon Baby http://nikonbaby.com
Great Tutorial I look forward to purchasing the full tutorial when the time comes. I was wondering what sort of adjustments do you do to your images before you pop them into photomatix?
Great stuff, Trey! Can anyone help with a sky-problem? I've taken some nighttime church pictures, 5-shot bursts, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2. The architecture renders ok in Photomatix Pro, but the night sky gets comes out weirdly bright and super-pixeled. I basically have to end up masking the entire sky, so I have to think there's a better way. Can anyone help? Thanks! - Burke
Just bought Photomatix Pro, love the images, so cool, A question i have is an image straight from my camera is 5184 x 3456 (17.9 mp ). After being processed in Photomatix Pro the image size is 2585 x 1717 ( 4.4 mp ). Is there any way of keeping the processed image the same size as the original image. Thanks. Mark.

Now THAT was a revelation. DxO is tuned to you camera body(ies) and specific lenses. Combining that with Photomatix and I am starting to see a workflow which is fast(er?), extremely flexible and effective. I suggest that all readers give it a try. My second puzzle is - Why take multiple exposures? As many have pointed out, with anything other than completely static images (No scudding clouds, people or waving fronds of vegetation) you automatically introduce potential blur between 3 images. If you shoot RAW, why not use the camera's "clean" image? i.e. No in-camera adjustments/filters applied. Then simply copy the RAW image plus and minus 2 stops. Photomatix then does an excellent job of merging/exposure fusion/tone mapping of the three resulting images. You can of course, still adjust each image for colour, contrast, chromatic aberrations, noise reduction, etc at will, before applying Photomatix. Just play with both programmes for a couple of hours and see which combination suits your MO.....
Thanks I am gonna try that. Never even thought of it. I have a bunch of vacation photos at the beach that I tried to shoot a couple stops off. But the Wind made the trees go crazy and it totally destroys the photo with so many ghosts. Hopefully exporting multiple version exposures of the RAW image will achieve the effect I'm looking for.
Hi, thanks for the great info. I'm a beginner and I'm hoping you could answer a question for me re AEB? The shot of the girl by the ocean at sunset. How do you get 3-5 shots in succession without the waves blurring? I mean, the waves would surely move in the time it takes to snap a sequence?
Masking with original. All the stationary items will be HDRed except the moving item. There will be 2 layers in Photo shop, one with HDr and second one will be the original one and then apply mask. Trey or anyone can correct me if I am wrong.
Question for Trey or anyone w experience shooting indoors w a tripod (museum, mall, etc.) Do you get bothered by security? Do you ask for permission or beg for forgiveness? Do you set up, shoot quickly and move on? Thanks for any advice you can pass on.
some museums wont allow photography at all and as its their property of course they hold the right stop you taking photographs, but it doesn't mean its not worth a shot! most security will just ask you to put it away, delete the photos or even leave(depending on the place); its unlikely you'll get into any serious trouble in a public area.

Hello Trey, I am HOOKED on HDR. I started out in the late 70's shooting film - weddings, portraits and then I found BW infrared film. I have always loved being in the darkroom because you could always manipulate the image by dodging and burning. A few months ago, I received a Panasonic 3rd generation 4/3 camera and it has the bracketing feature in it. I have been taking it out and shooting and am so excited to have the passion back with photography. Using Photomatix (and Photoshop) software is like being in a darkroom without the chemicals. Sharing your ideas and thoughts about photography and life has inspired and changed me. Thank you so much. Lynn
Hi Trey, I've been photographing for over 35 years. Film being the medium of choice. I mostly thought that digital was just photography without film until by accident came upon some of your stunning images. I thought I need to know how is this done! I would like to thank you for your generosity in sharing this tutorial and seeing how HDR digital imaging opens new avenues of creative photography. Mark
Hi, Trey. I'm new to HDR and have thoroughly enjoyed cruising around your site. Apologies if my question is too pedestrian, but with regards to Photomatix: I've heard great things about it beyond your endorsement. However, I have an old laptop that runs XP 32 bit...which means no Photomatix for me. However, I do have Adobe CS4, which has an HDR option. Do I need to buy a new laptop or can I get decent production out of CS4? - Burke
Luv your tutorial and will be checking out your sites and soak up that valuable knowledge Thanks a Million. Also checked out the image that you took while in Japan and loved the way the light was glowing from the building in HDR, i currently live in japan and luv shooting myself. http://www.blackmaninjapan.com photoblog Again luv your work
Trey, I've seen your work for a while now, and finally stumbled upon your site. Love the tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to put this together! Tampa Photographer

Sir ,I would be grateful if u would post HDR tutorials in photoshop. VIVEK NAIR
I think Trey specifically uses Photomatix for the "heavy lifting" of his HDR Photography.
We are a group of volunteers and starting a new scheme in our community. Your site offered us with useful information to paintings on. You have done a formidable task and our entire neighborhood can be thankful to you.
Trey...I just found out about your HDR course and see you use Photomatix. I use Nik HDR Efex Pro...will I still be able to take your course? Thanks for your attention!
Liked your video but I wish you didn't waste so much time showing so many of your own examples ~ Six and a half minutes in before any instruction begins. Instruction was a good overview. Thanks.
Actually, I like this one best (of the one's I've seen so far, of course): http://www.flickr.com/photos/s...
I so glad to see you say "Actually, I keep my older stuff up there to illustrate how much progress you can make in such a short time. I hope this is as inspirational for you as it is embarrassing to me". It IS inspirational to hear someone at the top of their game say it. I don't know how many books I've read that give the advice "only publish (post) your best stuff, because that's how you will be judged". Sorry, this is old school before internet and digital cameras when the only game was clients and stock. If you only post

How come no photos of Russia and no translation in Pahrusski? :o). I'm overwhelmed with breadth of your travels, I thought I had done some but had to think again! Russia a 1000 year history and so many things to photograph, people and places, much more (in quantity) I think than Ukraine (not not in quality, I love Kiev and don't want Ukrainians to blast me!!!). Have you considered it? Don't believe the rumors and propaganda, it's quite safe and Russians are such great hosts, they love Americans.

Hi, I bought the HDR tutorial plus book on 11/29 and the charge posted to my bank account, but so far no email to link to the tutorial. Please help!
thanks
I am a novice photographer. HDR creations intrigue me; though some of them are too artificial to be good. I want to learn the technique and use it occasionally.
Any reason that after I put my photos through Photomatix the resolution is reduced so much? I'm shooting with a 14 MP camera and afterwards the resolution is down to 3.2 MP on the final image? Thanks!

Thanks Trey, a very easy to follow overview of HDR there. Looks good, I will give my first ever HDR shot a try this weekend. Wish me luck ;)
This is a fantastic explanation of hdr photography. Would you be interested in guest blogging for my site perhaps?
I just watched your tutorial and tried the techniques and applied them to some shots of old covered bridges I took last weekend. While I have never composed pictures well or had much luck with lighting, the wow factor and comments from friends and family was enough to encourage me to buy Photoshop and will be purchasing your full tutorials this week. I already had Photomatix Pro. Thanks for sharing the knowledge on HDR. It has made my "regular" snapshots that much more impressive (trying to be modest here).
I think HDR would really work well with some elements, like closeups of the rings, etc. But, I'm not sure HDR would be that great to capture all of Tampa Wedding Photography

Help! Today my husband bought the tutorial for me. He paid with his pay pal account. He used his e-mail and not mine. How can I get it on my MAC? I am very anxious to get it and frustrated that I can't! HELP!!!!
Wow I must say this is amazing, I have started to use HDR for my real estate pictures, but I do have one question, which you have been asked a million times - How do you deal with movement? I was taking photos of my kids with the family dog but there was to much movement in the shots. I currently use a Canon G11. Thanks in advance.
I got the Premium HDR tutorial and registered with the clubhouse. It's been 3 days and my account has still not been activated. I even contacted support. I'm yet to hear back. Pl help
