The test r e s u l t s h a v e demonstrated t h a t c e r t a i n a b n o r m a l i t i e s , e g . , a d e a c t i v a t e d shock a b s o r b e r , yield vibration signatures that a r e readily d i s t i n g u i s h e d f r o m t h e i r normal c o u n t e r p a r t s . Many (e.g., eroded contacts), a b n o r m a l i t i es, however produce changes i n s i g n a t u r e s t h a t a r e d i f f i c u l t t o d e t e c t by o b s e r v a t i o n . Thus, t h e s i g n a l p r o c e s s i n g a n d d e c i sion-making p r o c e d u r e s d e v e l o p e d i n t h i s program a r e necessary i n o r d e r t o e n a b l e c o n s i s t e n t - a n d c o r r e c t - - d e t e r m i n a t i o n s of t h e m e c h a n i c a l c o n d i t i o n of a c i r c u i t breaker. The f o l l o w i n g s e c t i o n d e s c r i b e s t h e e x p e r i m e n t s and t h e d i a g n o s t i c i n s t r u m e n t a t i o n S i g n a l p r o c e s s i n g and d e c i sion-making procedures a r e then b r i e f l y described. F i n a l l y , a p p l i c a t i o n s t o a number of t e s t c o n f i g u r a t i o n s a t t h e manufacturer 8 1a borat o r i e s and a t t h e U n i v e r s i t y a t B u f f a l o a r e presented.

under f i e l d c o n d i t i o n s ( a t t h e e l e c t r i c u t i l i t i e s ) and i n t h e l a b o r a t o r y ( a t t h e m a n u f a c t u r e r s and a t t h e University a t Buffalo). I n a l l cases, t h e c i r c u i t b r e a k e r s were operated out of s e r v i c e . The d e v e l o p m e n t of s i g n a t u r e s a n d d i a g n o s t i c procedures was based upon comparisons of e x t e r n a l t a n k w a l l a c c e l e r a t i o n d a t a obtained from a g i v e n c i r c u i t b r e a k e r t h a t was o p e r a t e d u n d e r b o t h normal a n d abnormal conditions. Abnormal c o n d i t i o n s h a v e i n c l u d e d d e a c t i v a t e d shock absorber s, eroded c o n t a c t s, m i s a l i g n e d b u s h i n g s , o v e r t r a v e l s t o p misadjustment s, broken s t a t i o n a r y c o n t a c t , and changes i n t a i l s p r i n g settings. F i e l d t e s t s were p e r f o r m e d b e f o r e and a f t e r s c h e d u l e d m a i n t e n a n c e o p e r a t i o n s . These t e s t s h a v e p r o v e n u s e f u l i n t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of p r o c e d u r e s t h a t were c o m p a t i b l e w i t h m a i n t e n a n c e o p e r a t i o n s . AS a n t i c i p a t e d , a b n o r m a l i t i e s i n t h e c o n d i t i o n of a u n i t o c c u r r e d o n a random b a s i s . The v a r i o u s f i e l d t e s t s h a v e p r o v i d e d s t a t i s t i c a l d a t a b a s e s on ( 1 ) s e a s o n a l v a r i a b i l i t y of a c q u i r e d s i g n a t u r e s f r o m a s e l e c t e d c i r c u i t b r e a k e r , ( 2 ) s e n s i t i v i t y of r e s p o n s e t o changes i n t r a n s d u c e r l o c a t i o n , and (3) t h e s i m i l a r i t y i n t h e s i g n a t u r e s of d i f f e r e n t u n i t s of a g i v e n model. These a s p e c t s w i l l be i n c l u d e d i n a f o l l c u i n g paper. Experiments conducted a t manufacturers' s i t e s and a t the University a t B u f f a l o have permitted the i n t r o d u c t i o n of a b n o r m a l i t i e s i n a c o n t r o l l e d manner ( i n a d d i t i o n , of c o u r s e , t o o p e r a t i o n u n d e r normal conditions). F u r t h e r , i n t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of t h e d i a g n o s t i c p r o c e d u r e s , m e a s u r e m e n t s c o u l d be (and were) o b t a i n e d re1 a t i v e l y c o n v e n i e n t l y both i n s i d e and o u t s i d e of a u n i t . In particular, a t the University a t Buffalo, t h i s arrangement h a s enabled e x t e n s i v e measurements t o be c a r r i e d o u t concerning t h e e f f e c t s of t r a n s d u c e r placement upon (1) t h e a s s o c i a t e d capab i l i t y of d e t e c t i n g a b n o r m a l i t i e s and (2) t h e d e t a i l e d v i b r a t i o n a l c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of t h e t r a n s m i s s i o n path f r o m t h e i n t e r i o r (i.e., the source) t o t h e e x t e r n a l measurement l o c a t i o n s used f o r diagnostics. Instrumentation Sample Data Sample d a t a from f o u r c i r c u i t b r e a k e r s a r e considered. The u n i t s a r e d e s i g n a t e d h e r e i n a s : Siemens (BZO-121; 115 kV o i l ) , General E l e c t r i c (FEK239; 115 kV o i l ) , McGraw-Edison (RHF-90; 242 kV o i l ) , and B B C (PA-40; 242 kV SF6). T h e Siemens, McGrawEdison, and BBC c i r c u i t b r e a k e r s were new u n i t s ; each was t e s t e d a t t h e f a c i l i t i e s of t h e r e s p e c t i v e m a n u f a c t u r e r . The imposed a b n o r m a l i t i e s , p h y s i c a l l y r e l a t i v e l y s u b t l e i n nature, c l e a r l y then require signal processing f o r c o n s i s t e n t (and c o r r e c t ) d e c i sion-making.

Introduction S i g n a l p r o c e s s i n g techniques, i n c o n j u n c t i o n w i t h automatic decision-making procedures, provide a p a t t e r n r e c o g n i t i o n system t h a t can a u t o m a t i c a l l y d e t e c t t h e d e f e c t s of c i r c u i t b r e a k e r s . A s shown i n Fig. 6, a p a t t e r n r e c o g n i t i o n s y s t e m g e n e r a l l y cons i s t s of two p a r t s : a f e a t u r e e x t r a c t o r and a c l a s s i f i e r [21. The f e a t u r e e x t r a c t o r i s a s i g n a l processor t h a t p r e s e n t s t h e s i g n a l i n a manner which e n h a n c e s t h e d i f f e r e n c e s between normal and abnormal behavior. ' h e c l a s s i f i e r i s an automatic d e c i s i o n m a k e r .
S i g n a l p r o c e s s i n g t e c h n i q u e s denoted by t h e terms m o d i f i e d s p e c t r a l (MS) a n a l y s i 6 a n d s t r u c t u r a l m o d i f i c a t i o n (SW) a n a l y s i s a r e employed a s f e a t u r e extractors The modified s p e c t r a l a n a l y s i s y i e l d s a s e t of s p e c t r a of any s i g n a l . This technique i s e f f e c t i v e i n e x t r a c t i n g u s e f u l i n f o r m a t i o n about t h e s i g n a l and i s s i m p l e t o i m p l e m e n t i n t h e f r e q u e n c y domain ( i n which power s p e c t r a a r e obtained). Struct u r a l m o d i f i c a t i o n a n a l y s i s i s a more s o p h i s t i c a t e d s i g n a l p r o c e s s i n g method t h a t r e q u i r e s v i b r a t i o n s i g n a l s f r o m b o t h t h e e x t e r i o r and t h e i n t e t i o r of a c i r c u i t b r e a k e r . I n t h i s method, t h e e f f e c t s of t h e i n t e r v e n i n g s t r u c t u r e and i n t e r r u p t i n g medium a r e i n c o r p o r a t e d so a s t o e n a b l e t h e d e t e r m i n a t i o n of t h e s i g n a l t h a t i s c h a r a c t e r i s t i c of t h e i n t e r i o r source.

Consequently, f o r a g i v e n o p e r a t i n g c o n d i t i o n , should any f e a t u r e e x t r a c t o r a n d i t s a s s o c i a t e d c l a s s i f i e r i n d i c a t e t h e threshold (or c r i t i c a l ) value t o have been exceeded, t h e c i r c u i t breaker i s then d e c l a r e d t o be i n abnormal c o n d i t i o n . Thus, t h e c o m b i n a t i o n of f e a t u r e e x t r a c t o r and c l a s s i f i e r i s used t o determine w h e t h e r a c i r c u i t b r e a k e r i s i n normal OT a b n o r m a l condition. I n o p e r a t i o n , a t l e a s t t h r e e MS a n a l y z e r s w e r e used as f e a t u r e e x t r a c t o r s ; S M a n a l y z e r s were implemented whenever t h e d a t a were a v a i l a b l a Each f e a t u r e e x t r a c t o r was connected t o a c l a s s i f i e r . Each c l a s s i f i e r s t o r e d t h e proper normal f e a t u r e s ; t h e i n p u t f e a t u r e (of unknown c l a s s i f i c a t i o n , i n p r i n c i p l e ) was characterized numerically i n respect t o t h e threshold value I n t h i s arrangement, t h e c l a s s i f i c a t i o n s (Le,, n o r m a l l a b n o r m a l ) d e t e r m i n e d by t h e s e c l a s s i f i e r s m i g h t n o t a l l c o i n c i d e w i t h each o t h e r . As noted above, t h e c i r c u i t breaker was d e c l a r e d t o be i n a n abnormal c o n d i t i o n i f a t l e a s t one of t h e c l a s s i f i e r s lo i n d i c a t e d , i.e., i f t h e d e c i s i o n r a t i o , DRn [DRn = QAnITHn; where QAn = mean v a l u e c h a r a c t e r i z i n g abnormality n and THn = t h r e s h o l d ( o r c r i t i c a l ) mean v a l u e f o r abnormality n l > 1.00. McGraw-Edison (RHF-90; 242 kV o i l ) , and B B C (PA-40; 242 kV SF6). The r e s u l t s w i l l p o i n t t o t h e v a l u e of u s i n g s e v e r a l ( a t l e a s t t h r e e ) MS a n a l y s i s c l a s s i f i e r s , t o g e t h e r w i t h t h e SM a n a l y s i s c l a s s i f i e r s . S U M M A R Y AND CONCLUSIONS Through t h e use of n o n i n v a s i v e d i a g n o s t i c s , t h e a s s e s s m e n t of t h e m e c h a n i c a l c o n d i t i o n of a c i r c u i t breaker, L a , whether t h e u n i t i s i n normal o r abnormal c o n d i t i o n , h a s b e e n s u c c e s s f u l l y d e t e r m i n e d . T e s t s were c o n d u c t e d upon o i l ( p r i n c i p a l l y ) and S F 6 c i r c u i t b r e a k e r s a t t h r e e m a n u f a c t u r e r s and a t t h e University a t Buffalo. Test procedures h a v e i n v o l v e d o b t a i n i n g v i b r a t i o n s i g n a l s from transducers placed a l o n g t h e e x t e r n a l s u r f a c e s of (and, under c e r t a i n conditions, w i t h i n t h e i n t e r i o r o f ) a c i r c u i t breaker. By a p p l y i n g d a t a p r o c e s s i n g (modified s p e c t r a l a n a l y s i s and s t r u c t u r a l m o d i f i c a t i o n a n a l y si s) and d e c i sion-making techniques, t h e m e c h a n i c a l c o n d i t i o n of a u n i t u n d e r any g i v e n o p e r a t i n g c o n d i t i o n (normal and w i t h v a r i o u s imposed a b n o r m a l i t i e s ) was d e t e r m i n e d q u a n t i t a t i v e l y (i.e., numerically).
