Almost all students attempted this section as students only had to pick the right option from 4 given answers. Many, especially those in Form 4 Science 1 & 2 were able to answer this section well. . They understood stimulus given and were able to extract relevant information from them. Most students scored between 2 to 4 questions correctly.
Some students still had difficulty understanding vocabulary found in some questions while some struggled with Questions 4 - 6 involving a Rational Cloze Passage.
First 5 questions are quite tricky. Most students were able to extract information from given stimulus, but fail to score question 4 and 5. Nevertheless, they manage to score the rest of this section.
Most students had the tendency to copy the general place from the text as their answers. Students were unsure of keywords indicated in the instruction, i.e. where the incidents occurred.
Students will be exposed to intelligent lifting of answers, as opposed to total lifting. Students will be reminded and given practice exercises where they check answers carefully for this section to avoid misinterpretation of instructions.
Students were able to lift intelligently from the passage to score marks for comprehension.
Some students ignored certain keywords in the questions, for example, name two spices, give a reason, etc.
Students from 4 Science 1 and Science 2 were able to score this section as the text is rather straight forward. Many students managed to answer many questions on Short Story and some on Poem, thus indicating they have basic knowledge of the literature component.
Many students were unable to understand the content of the test and weak in grammar especially tenses.
Students will be given more practice exercises to ensure they are aware of the requirements of questions which state they are to give ONE WORD or PHRASE as their answer. Students will be encouraged to use at least some own words, for example by substituting single words, phrases or reordering words. Students will be exposed to many exercises of this sort so to enhance their understanding of grammar usage. Students will be exposed to an abundance of SPM style questions. Students will be asked to look out for and highlight key words so as to understand fully the requirement of the questions.
Students were unable to present the relevant textual evidence from the texts (both Poem and Short Story) Some students answers reflected very minimal understanding of the text, especially for Part 1, Question 3.
