1 H2 Mathematics Self-study plan for Nov/Dec holidays 2012 Start With the End in Mind What do you want

to graduate with at the end of your two years in CJC? The answer is obvious but what are you actually doing to achieve this goal? Are you satisfied with your Promo Exam results? The A levels are just 11 months away. Be realistic and think. This Nov/Dec holiday is the only long break you have to strengthen your weak topics and have a strong foundation at the start of JC2. If you miss this opportunity to catch up or to build up your weak areas, there is no other long break. Although considered long, this holiday only has 7 weeks left. You may like to consider the option of doing 3 weeks of play and 3 weeks of study. Consider your own area of weakness and adjust this ratio accordingly. Think long-term, be happy with your choice and move on. Topics in JC1: Binomial Theorem Arithmetic Progression Geometric Progression Recurrence Relations Sigma Notation Mathematical Induction System of Linear Equations Vectors Functions

Graphing Techniques Conics Transformations Inequalities Parametric Equations Trigonometry Differentiation Applications of Differentiation Maclaurins Series Small Angle Approximations

How to Start on a Study Schedule Step 1: Reflect on your JC1 study habits. Think whether you have used the right strategy to study for Math. What do you need to change? What do you need to keep? Decide that you want to improve in Math. Step 2: Block out days which are not available for studying, e.g. OBS, CCA training, family holidays, scheduled outings with friends, etc. Mark out days you have left for studying. Step 3: For each Math topic, think of how you want to revise, e.g. read notes, make summaries, re-do tutorial questions, and do holiday assignments (found in AsknLearn website). Then allocate the time needed for each topic, e.g. Functions 1 day, Differentiation 2 days, etc. Step 4: Put all your study days into the calendar. If your study time cannot fit into your available days, you will need to prioritise. Decide which is more important and what you want to achieve at the end of the holidays before start of JC2. Step 5: Adjust your plan if needed but you must mostly stick to it. Please note that studying Math involves understanding concepts and then applying the concepts to solve problems. It is no use just reading notes or solutions and trying to memorise them. You need to learn to solve problems. In other words, only regular and consistent work to solve problems will help you improve. Sorry, no last minute cramming. Remember: Two hours of maths a day, will keep the U and S away!
