Capabilities
The Deltbase 505 is designed for the following geotechnical applications: 1. Coring: Wireline coring systems Conventional core barrel systems Undisturbed sampling and testing - can be used with SPT (automatic SPT system is supplied as standard on the DB520), Shelby thin wall tube sampler and hydraulic piston sampler (with 50 mm drill pipe).
2. Geotechnical Investigation - using rotary and rotary percussive systems for anchors, micro-piles and high-pressure injection systems. 3. Micro-piling holes for water wells or piezometer installation can be drilled using: Tricone roller bits in the range from 95mm up to 260mm diameter Auger drilling depending on prevailing ground conditions, holes can be drilled down to 30m with 176mm diameter augers Porousity / permeability testing it is possible to use inflatable packers or conventional packers with screw type, expandable rubber seals.
Note: This drill can be supplied with a Hydraulic Hammer mounted on the rotary head for direct percussion drilling.

Mobility: The compact size and low weight of the machine makes transportation by road a simple procedure and the narrow width allows access into confined spaces. As an option, the standard 750mm wide rubber crawlers can be replaced with telescopic crawlers extendable up to 1000mm. The drill rig can be powered by either diesel engine or electric motors. Stability: Stabilising cylinders are fitted at each corner of the rig. They can be operated independently and swung out to improve stability during the drilling operation. Drill Mast: The standard drill mast is a modular mast fitted with a top mounted feed motor. The standard stroke is 1700mm but lengths of 1000, 1500 or 2400mm can be supplied on request. Sections of the modular mast can be added or removed to suit any height restrictions that may apply. Where required, a fixed length mast with hydraulic feed cylinder can be supplied. The mast rotates through 360 degrees. A hydraulic cylinder rotates the mast through 45 degrees either side of vertical and additional rotation is achieved by moving the cylinder eye end round to additional attachment points.The mast has a dump cylinder to compensate for uneven ground conditions. Bottom Clamp: A clamping system is fitted at the bottom of the mast with maximum clamping diameter of 140mm. The clamping force can be adjusted by a pressure control valve. An optional thread breaking device can be fitted. Rotary Head: The floating spindle type rotary head has two Danfoss hydraulic motors that can be changed hydraulically between series or parallel operation.
Engine: The hydraulic system is powered by a Hatz Silent Pack diesel engine rated at 78 dB at a distance of 7m.

Hydraulic System: Consists of a variable delivery piston pump with fixed power rating for rotation and crawlers and a gear pump for the feed motor, servo controls and other functions. Proportional valves are used in the hydraulic controls for precision of operation and loadsensing valves are utilised for maximum hydraulic efficiency. All main cylinders are fitted with non-return valves. A temperature-sensing device, switches on a heat exchanger automatically and a light illuminates on the control panel when the heat exchanger operates. A suction filter protects the hydraulic system with automatic clogging indicator on the control panel. Control Panel: The fixed position control panel is located on the side of the rig. All controls are ergonomically grouped on the panel and in addition to the standard drilling controls; an emergency safety button is included. The DB 535 is a multipurpose diesel hydraulic drill rig with capacity to drill Geotechnical and Environmental investigation holes using Auger, casing, rock roller bit, DTH hammer and wireline percussion tools. The rig is able to handle tool sizes from 4 to 8 diameter with a depth rating of 60 metre for drilling with casing and 150 metre for rotary drilling. High speed / High torque heads are available for drilling with core drilling equipment in all sizes up to SQ size. Fully equipped with the Boart Longyear Tool-OMatic set-up this rig is one man operated. The Drill mast is turned 90 allowing the operator full access to the flat and drilling line. The drilling tools are located on the flat in hydraulic operated elevators and conveyers. In the centre line is mounted a manual drill pipe loading frame. All routine operations are possible within an arm length of the operator. This revolutionary design is fully protected by patent. All drilling operations are electrically operated from a cable remote control. SAUER DANFOSS and REXROTH supply all hydraulic valves, motors and pumps. The electrical system provides full control during making and breaking the threads. The rig is equipped with an emergency shut down system that shuts down the entire power supply. Geotech SQ
The Geotech SQ wireline head assembly as shown in the diagram is commonly used for large diameter wireline coring in geotechnical applications. It features heat treated latches for durability and longer wear life. The spindle can be adjusted to allow for control of the flushing flow and pressure in different formations. This is particularly useful in softer formations where, in conjunction with face discharge drill bits, the fluid flow can be diverted away from the core sample to reduce core loss. Boart Longyear offers a range of flush jointed casing, primarily used to stabilize the walls of the drill hole in difficult ground conditions. The casing has right-hand male and female threading at opposite ends. Metric Casing is most commonly used in shallow drill holes in typical geotechnical drilling applications usually in complement with Metric Coring Tools, (Section 3). Metric casing is manufactured from cold drawn seamless steel tubing with material specifications exceeding DCDMA specifications. The WJ drill rod is a non-wireline drill rod primarily used in conventional diamond core drilling applications, soil investigations and rotary drilling. Series Impregnated Bits: Series bits are coded numerically from 1 to 10. As a simple guide, the harder rock type, the higher the series (i.e. series 10 for the hardest rocks and series 1 and 2 for the softer, abrasive formations). As many other factors affect the selection and use of a series bit we have introduced new matrices, diamond types and manufacturing techniques to create a range of new improved products. Please contact your local representative for additional information. Series 1 Series 2 For extremely abrasive and broken, softer formations. Should only be used on very powerful drills with high torque, high thrust capability. For abrasive formations and/or most fractured formations. It is a general purpose bit for use on all types powered drills. Higher bit loads (more than recommended in the tables) may be used without serious risk of excessive bit wear. For medium hard, abrasive, competent formations. Recommended for low powered drills only. High loads (more than recommended) will seriously reduce bit life. For medium to hard, low abrasivity and partly fractured formations. Less susceptible to overdrilling at high loads than is Series 4. For hard, moderately abrasive and fractured formations. A tough, relatively free cutting fast penetrating bit. For hard, competent and non-abrasive formations. This free cutting bit requires high rotational speeds and light bit loads for best performance. Very free cutting bit with good life in hard to very hard competent and non-abrasive formations. High rotational speeds and light bit loads. Used in underground drilling operations. Recommended for ultra-hard, non-abrasive formations. Needs high rotation speeds and low thrust. No use in abrasive formations.

In softer formations such as slate, soft shales, soft sandstone and limestone, a tungsten carbide bit may be used. The cutting face of this type bit is inset with small octagonal inserts of tungsten carbide (TC) alloy. The inserts may be re-sharpened using a carbide-grinding wheel. Depending on the formation, the size of the Tungsten Carbide insert could be changed in order to enhance the drilling capabilities. Tungsten carbide bits are used with a saw tooth or flat face profile. The saw tooth profile is suitable for drilling in tightly compacted soil. The flat face profile is used in soft shales and soft rock. Boart Longyear offers a range of Geotech Water Swivels designed for reliability and durability, they can be used with water and drilling fluids. The water swivel permits circulation of fluid through the drill rod string while the rods are drilling or suspended on the hoist line. Hoisting of the drill string over short distances is also possible with the hoisting bail. Water swivels are available in a range of sizes up to 10,000 Kg Static Load capacity. The complete water swivel assembly as detailed below is very easy to assemble and maintain at the drill site. Shelby Tube
The Shelby Tube Sampler is a thin wall in-situ sampling system, designed to take undisturbed samples in cohesive type clays and soils. The head section contains a drill rod box connection at one end and incorporates a check valve for vacuum control. The thin wall sample tube is attached to the head by means of three cap screws. The head features a machined shoulder, when sampling the tube seats firmly against the shoulder, this ensures that the sampling force is applied uniformly. The sampler should be pressed into the formation by application of steady pressure until the tube is full or the point of refusal is achieved. The tube should be removed from the head and capped for testing at a later stage. The thin wall sample tubes are available in the standard length of 701 mm; other lengths can be provided on request.

This is a general, all-purpose split-tube sampler that can be used in both the geotechnical and environmental drilling industry. It is often used to determine bearing capacity of soils as required for Standard Penetration Tests. It is designed for taking soil samples at the bottom of the cleaned bore hole by the drive weight method. The standard length of the sampler is 623 mm providing a sample length of 559 mm. The head of the assembly comes with a ball check feature that helps prevent losing a sample by washing out during withdrawal.

Denison Double Tube
The Denison Sampler is designed for taking undisturbed samples in soils and easily eroded materials that have a potential to wash out during sampling. The double tube, swivel type core barrel is able to obtain undisturbed samples from soft materials as well as hard soils where pressures required would be too great to push or even drive thin wall samplers. During sampling the inner tube shoe is pressed firmly against the formation while the outer tube is rotated. To protect the sample, the inner tube remains stationary at all times. The inner tube contains a thin plastic liner to preserve sample integrity during sampling and handling out of the test hole. The sample is retained in the sampler liner either by wall friction or with a basket retainer. This equipment is inter-changeable with the K3 Double Tube Core Barrel with the exception of the bit and core lifter. These are replaced with a thin kerf bit / outer shoe and basket type retainer. This procedure developed by Terzaghi and Peck gives the measurement of the penetration resistance of soil, using a standard sampler driven for 30cm with a 63,5kg hammer dropping 75cm. The split-spoon sampler connected to the drill rods, is lowered into the hole after the hole has been cleaned out and the water level has settled. The automatic hammer falls on the driving rod head so that the tube is driven 15 cm into the layer (to avoid interference zones) and the spoon is driven 30cm. Inclinometer System
Inclinometer casing is typically installed in a near vertical borehole that passes through suspected zones of movement into stable ground. The Digitilt inclinometer probe, control cable, pulley assembly, and readout are used to survey the casing. The first survey establishes the initial profile of the casing. Subsequent surveys reveal changes in the profile if ground movement occurs. During a survey, the probe is drawn upwards from the bottom of the casing to the top, halted in its travel at half-meter intervals for tilt measurements. Plotting the cumulative changes at each measurement interval yields a high-resolution displacement profile. Displacement profiles are useful for determining the magnitude, depth, direction, and rate of ground movement. Digitilt Control Cable Digitilt control cable is used to control the depth of the inclinometer probe, it also conducts power and signals between the probe and the readout. Depth marks are vulcanised onto cable jacket. Steel core wire controls stretching. Binder layer eliminates slipping of cable jacket relative to core wire. Torsion braid counters cable torque. The neoprene cable jacket resists chemicals and abrasion. DigiTilt DataMate Readout Unit The Digitilt DataMate records data from inclinometer probes and stores up to 40 complete inclinometer surveys. It is capable of powering a Digitilt inclinometer for 16 hours. The DataMate is designed for hard use in difficult environments. Electronic components are rated for extended temperatures. Operation The standpipe piezometer system comprises a sealed standpipe tube connected to a porous element, the filter tip. The filter tip is placed at the desired zone and a bentonite plug is placed above the zone to isolate it from the other layers. Water now enters the installation through the filter tip making it possible to take readings by lowering a dip meter from ground level. A sound can be heard as soon as the dip meter encounters the water level. The graduated tape with cm markings gives the operator an indication of the water depth. Limitations and Advantages The standpipe piezometer offers a low cost alternative to borehole pressure transducers and is simple to read. The VW piezometer converts water pressure to a frequency signal via a diaphragm, a tensioned steel wire, and an electro-magnetic coil. The piezometer is designed so that a change in pressure on the diaphragm causes a change in tension of the wire. When excited by the electro-magnetic coil, the wire vibrates at its natural frequency. Displacement and especially settlement along an axis of a measuring tube (or borehole) can be measured by means of a magnetic probe extensometer. Monitoring settlement and heave can be very critical in excavation, foundations, earth dams and embankments. Data from the extensometer provides an indication of settlement per measuring point, as well as total settlement. Operation The magnetic extensometer system exists out of a magnetic probe, a measuring tape, a tape reel with built in light and buzzer and a number of measuring rings positioned at distinct intervals along the length of an access pipe. Readings can be obtained by lowering the extensometer probe trough the access pipe to the depth of the measuring rings equipped with magnets. When the probe enters the magnetic field, a reed switch closes, activating the light and buzzer. The actual depth of the measuring ring is established from the measuring tape onto which the extensometer probe is connected and which is graduated with cm markings. When the access pipe is anchored in stable ground, the depth of each measuring ring is referred to a datum magnet reading that is fixed to the bottom of the access pipe. Installation Access tube is used to install magnets and provide a means of lowering the probe. If possible the access tube should be installed into stable ground making it possible to use a datum magnet as the reference reading. A datum magnet is used in installations that are anchored in stable ground and are placed at the bottom of the installation. The settlement of each measuring point is referenced to the datum magnet. In case of earth fills or the construction of embankments, plate magnets should be used. The plate magnet, measuring 300x300mm and incorporating a magnetic ring, is placed around the access tube and plate magnets are added as construction proceeds. DTH Hammers The BL21 Hammer is suitable for operation at air pressures of 7-17 bar. The valved design provides high performance at low pressures. Designed for hole sizes of 70mm to 76mm. The BL31 Hammer is ideally suited for smaller hole drilling due to its robust design, providing superior strength and durability. Designed for hole sizes of 90mm to 100mm. The BL41 Hammer is designed for maximum performance at high pressures up to 24 bars. A wide range of bit diameters is available from 105 to 130mm. The BL56 Hammer is suited for drilling applications in medium to hard rock types at a wide range of air pressures from 7 to 24 bars. Designed for hole sizes of 130 to 152mm. The BL61 Hammer is suitable for drilling at a wide range of air pressures but the full potential of this hammer is realised at the higher working pressures.
