Join Date Jul 2005 Inquirer - Rito Asilo Maging Akin Muli D: Marilou Diaz-Abaya S: Marvin Agustin, Noel Trinidad, Sandy Andolong Marilou Diaz-Abayas timely (and timeless) cinematic reflection on faith is served well by the big screen that expands her digital films emotional breadth and pertinence. Still big on visuals, but this time, more intimate in narrative scope, Abaya limns a meditative tone on her intimate story about Junjun Santos (Marvin Agustin), a young deacon, and his often confounding, but ultimately cathartic journey towards spiritual

enlightenment. He struggles to confront and find the relevance of his chosen vocation in this day and age. Abaya tackles a hodgepodge of issues that every Christian faces on a daily basis: Morality, sexuality, capital punishment, abortion, parochial intrigue and the culture of gossip and violence. Some scenes occasionally teeter on schmaltz, but Agustin -- along with Noel Trinidad and the productions other principals (Sandy Andolong, Noni Buencamino, Missy Maramara ) -paces the film with his powerful, empathetic involvement and deep understanding of character. In Junjuns eyes, you see a mixture of hope, awe and confusion that also seeps through our own consciousness every now and then. Our reaction to Abayas 2003 drama, Noon at Ngayon, was lukewarm, but her latest films subtle intensity reminds us of her power as a great storyteller. While this spiritual trajectory doesnt have the splashy magnitude of Muro -Ami, Jose Rizal and Bagong Buwan, the movie nonetheless serves as a reminder that it was the filmmakers contemplative soul that had steered her indelibly intimate movies (Karnal, Moral and Brutal) to artistic fruition. In our daily struggle to stay on the right track, we get lost in rhetori c. But, Maging Akin Muli shows us that, indeed, theres no perfect vocation, just perfect intentions. And, sometimes, theyre enough.

Jun Jun, 26, is a newly-ordained deacon. By tradition, he may now be addressed as "Reverend," a title that sounds better with his full name, Christoper Santos, Jr. But he prefers to be simply Junjunordinary, simple, cool. Junjun entered the seminary at age 12, but he nevertheless enjoyed his childhood and teens, managed to have a couple of girlfriends in secret, earned good grades, and taught himself to sing pop songs as well. He has never doubted his vocation, but often wonders if there are ways to live it "outside the box." Music is the language of his heart, the prayer of his soul. After ordination as a deacon, he is sent to his hometown to assist in the parish and gain pastoral experience as a way of preparing for his ordination to the priesthood. There he meets Fr. Salvador Bautista, 65, fluent in Latin and Italian, a product of the "old school." Ordained just as the reforms of the Second Vatican Council were launched, Fr. Doy had served in several parishes before being assigned to the rural Parish of Santiago Apostol the past five years. MAGING AKIN MULI accompanies Junjun on his journey to the priesthood. At Santiago Apostol, he encounters the complexities of life for his fellow pilgrims in the parish -a generous but demanding benefactor, a young lady in distress, a couple whose son is on death row. The lives of these people enrich his own, but also challenge his vocation to be good and holy, to belong to God. The film explores the tension between human freedom, what people decide to do with their lives, and divine wisdom, what God asks of each person.
