Argala means intervention in the affairs of a sign (Rashi) or graha by another rashi or graha. Argala can be of two types viz., (i) Shubhargala (good intervention) caused by benefic rasi/graha, and (ii) Papargala (bad intervention) caused by malefic rasi/graha. However, such Argala is also obstructed by other rasi/graha. The strength, effect and prevalence of the Argala or obstruction to the argala is determined from the strength of the rasi/graha (determined by the standard methods) causing the Argala and obstruction. The result of the stronger of the two causes it (Argala/obstruction) to prevail. The following rules explain the cause of Argala and the obstruction to it: Cause of argala RULE I The rasi or planet(s) in the 2nd, 4th and 11th houses f rom a rasi/graha intervene or cause Argala in the affairs of the latter. (UPSJ: 1.1.4) RULE II Malefic rasi/planet(s) in the 3rd from a rasi/graha also cause Argala on the said rasi. (Note: A malefic/malefics in the 3rd not only cause obstruction of the Argala of the 11th rasi/graha, but they themselves cause Argala simultaneously. RULE III The rasi/graha in the 5th also cause secondary level Argala on the said rasi. Obstruction of argala RULE I The rasi/graha in the 3rd, 10th and 12th from a rasi/graha obstruct the Argala. RULE II The rasi/graha in the 9th obstructs the Argala caused by the rasi/graha in the 5th (Rule III above). Exception regarding Ketu In the case of a sign occupied by Ketu, the reckoning of both Argala and Obstruction caused by the said rasi/Ketu is always done in the reverse direction (anti clockwise). ? FOLLOW-UP QUESTION BY MR.NARASIMHA RAO ON KETU EXCEPTION You said, "EXCEPTION REGARDING KETU In the case of a sign occupied by Ketu, the reckoning of both Argala and Obstruction caused by the said rais/Ketu is always done in the reverse direction (anti clockwise)." Is it "caused by" or "caused on"? I have so far been under the impression that the exception applies when we find argala *on* the sign containing Ketu (not *by* the sign). Let us say Ketu is in Libra. When we find argalas on Cancer, Libra and Ketu cause argala being in the 4th from Cancer. But, when we find argalas *on* Libra, they are caused by 2nd, 4th and 11th counted in reverse, i.e. by Vi, Cn and Sg. This is the way I understood it and possibly it is wrong. => ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH Your understanding is correct. Argala means planetary or sign intervention and they are caused on signs and planets alike. The primary ones the 2nd, 4th & 11th and they are obstructed by the 12th, 10th and 3rd respectively. As regards Ketu, the reckoning is always in the reverse. Thus, for example, my AL is Sagittarius and has Ketu in it. Thus for Ketu the 2nd, 4th and 11th counted in the reverse is Scorpio, Virgo and Aquarius that cause Argala. The planets in these signs also cause Argala on Ketu. However, the AL is Sagittarius and the Argala on the AL is reckoned in the regular order i.e the 2nd, 4th and 11th from Sagittarius or Capricorn, Pisces and Libra intervene in its affairs. Thus the presence of Saturn in the 2nd, Sun in the 8th and Ketu in AL causes Kemadruma (Poverty) Yoga which has resulted in taking up a service which can never make the two ends meet!! I guess all honest Govt. servants in India will be in such a predicament. Fortunately, the Mokshkaraka Ketu has Subha Argala in the 11th in Aquarius and due to my Ketu related activities I have received gifts and donations to improve my lot. Thus in Leo Dasa Aquarius Antardasa my elder brother gifted me a Car!! (We should also see the aspect of Aquarius on the A4 in Libra for this not ignoring its Argala on the 4th house as well.) Moon aspected by Venus can be a Dhana Yoga. ? ANOTHER FOLLOW-UP QUESTION BY DINA-NATHA DAS 1.What does that mean that malefic(s) in 3rd cause Argala themselves simultaneously? 2.What is the secondary level Argala? I couldn't find any explanation about secondary level Argala in BPHS. What is the difference between primary and secondary Argala? Regarding Exception of Ketu, In BHPS ch. 31. Verses 2-9, Santhanam's translation, it is said: "As the nodes have retrograde motions, the Argalas and obstructions be also counted accordingly in a reverse manner." Since Santhanam used plural for words node and motion, that would indicate that wants to say that we should use reverse counting for reckoning Argala for both nodes, Rahu and Ketu. Later in the notes on the same verse he is giving an example where he is counting in reverse order to reckon the Argala of Rahu which confirms the above verse from BPHS. Also there is very important rule about Argala in the verse 10 of ch 31.: " The Argala caused by placement of a planet in the first one fourth part of the Rasi is countered by another placed in the 4th quarter of the respective obstructive Rasi. Similarly 2nd quarter's Argala is eliminated by the 3rd quarter placement." Santhanam explains: "If the Argala causing planet is in the first quarter (or first 7 degrees 30 minutes of the sign), while the obstructing planet is in the 4th quarter (22degrees 30 minutes to 30 degrees), the obstruction indeed will come to pass... Likewise while the Argala planet is in the 2nd quarter of the sign (i.e. 7 degrees 30 minutes to 15 degrees), the obstruction (planet in 15degrees to 22 degrees 30 minutes i.e. 3rd quarter) will combat the Argala." => ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH Malefics in the third suo-moto cause Argala as they also simultaneously obstruct the Argala of the 11th house. Since the 11th is the house of Gains, the objective is not gained and the person has to use PARAKRAMA BALA to achieve the objective. Thus, the gain is initially denied and the native fights for it and gains it at a later stage. As regards the Chaturthamsa usage for determining the efficacy of the Argala and its obstruction, this is Bhagya (fortune/Destiny) and we shall discuss this later. I have already explained earlier that the reverse counting is for Ketu ONLY and not for Rahu as along with the other planets Rahu is the cause of rebirth and the fruits. Ketu is the ONLY planet that is working like Ganapati (Tapasya) to take us to Narayana i.e. Moksha. Hence Ketu's Argala is in the reverse as it indicates the planets favouring or disfavouring the attaining of Moksha. For example, I have Ketu in the AL in Sagittarius with the Moon in Aquarius and no planet in Libra. Thus, the Moon in the 3rd from the AL shows the nature of death and this is unobstructed. Moon is also in the 11th from Ketu counted in the reverse direction and helps in the gain of the objective of Moksha and this Argala is unobstructed. Thus on the one hand the Moon gives death, and on the other it aids Moksha which can be achieved, in the real sense after death. I hope with this example it is amply clear that the reverse count is only for Ketu because it is the Moksha karaka. ? ANOTHER FOLLOW-UP QUESTION BY MR.NARASIMHA ON THE ABOVE EXAMPLE. This is a convenient example with Ketu in the arudha lagna. Because of Ketu is in AL, 3rd from AL and 11th from Ketu (in reverse) coincide and you have nice logic. This is not always true. If someone has Ketu is in Sg, Moon in Li and AL in Le, he can say: "see - the 11th from Ketu (directly counted) has Moon and 3 rd from AL also has Moon. So Moon gives death and helps in the gain of the objective of Moksha" and present a case for forward counting for Ketu also. No, I am not questioning "vipareetam ketoh" exception. I accepted that argala caused *by* Ketu and his sign are counted in reverse, because Jaimini maharshi and you taught so. However, I still cannot see any logic behind this. I am referring to the concluding remark quoted above. I still can't see the relation between reverse counting for Ketu and Ketu being Moksha karaka. I am not satisfied by the explanation you gave and will wait for more explanation later. ? RELATED QUESTION BY MR.DINAKARAN Two malefic planets occupied in each two bhava 5th and 9th . 9th bhava obstructs the argala. The same number of planets occupied in each house now is the obstruction removed or not removed. How does it conclude? Does any remedy to remove the obstruction? Please clarify with need example. Have any rules to cancel " The Karaka bhava nasa" ? => ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH Nice question. If the Argala and its obstruction are equally strong, it constitutes a bandhana Yoga (Bondage). If malefics alone are involved, and if this is in the 2-12 or 5-9 houses, then this can cause actual physical bondage like kidnapping or jail. Rahu and Saturn involved gives being beaten with chains or other forms of torture while Gulika afflicting shows the use of poisonous substances. This world can be very evil for some people depending on their karma. That is why I always look for natural benefics in these places. ? ANOTHER RELATED QUESTION ON ARGALA BY MR.SATISH Appreciate if someone can answer the questions on argala. I don't think I understand argala. i.e. What is a good argala and what is bad argala. Does it depend on the planet causing the argala. => ANSWER BY MR.NARASIMHA RAO Yes. Think of this question: What is a good aspect and what is a bad aspect? Argalas by malefics are bad and argalas by benefics are good. Let me give an example. Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi's D-10 has lagna and Venus in Gemini, Sun in Cancer and Saturn and Mercury in Aries. Lagna in D-10

shows one's true nature when moving in society (i.e. in career). Let us take the argalas on lagna. Sun casts an argala and so do Mercury and Saturn. What are the results? Mercury's argala shows that he may be intellectual in nature. Saturn's argala on lagna can make him humble. Sun's argala may make him forceful and authoritative. How can one be humble and authoritative? Well, you can see both these qualities in him depending on dasa and transit influences. But the dominating influence will be Sun's, because Saturn is debilitated and weak. Why did I say Saturn's argala gives humility, which is a word with a positive spin on it? Why not introvert nature, inhibition, servile behavior etc, which have a negative spin? Similarly, why did I say Sun's argala on dasamsa lagna makes him forceful and authoritative in his movement in the society (which is somewhat negative)? Why can't it make him a charming and charismatic leader (which is positive)? The answer has to do with benefic/malefic argalas. Each planet's influence on each house can have a positive spin as well as negative spin. A positive influence, consistent with the nature of the planet, can be exerted when it has a benefic argala. A negative influence, consistent with the nature of the planet, can be exerted when it has a malefic argala. Here Saturn owns 8th and 9th from lagna and he is a functional benefic. So his argala on lagna can give humble nature (positive) and not servile, introvert and inhibited nature (negative). Sun, OTOH, is a functional malefic as he owns 3rd house and he gives a forceful and authoritative nature (negative) and not a charismatic and charming personality (positive). [Note: To find functional benefics and malefics for a lagna, follow Parasara and not modern day savants! What Parasara taught is perfect. If it doesn't make sense to you or if it doesn't work for you, it must be that you misunderstood him! While on the topic of strict adherence of Parasari principles of functional nature of planets, look for my article on "Kendradhipati dosha" (the malice of a benefic's ownership of a quadrant) in Surya Prakash memorial issue of "The Astrological Magazine" - Sept 1999.] Another example: Madonna's D-10 has ghati lagna and Venus in Taurus and Saturn causes argala on ghati lagna from Pisces. With Saturn being a yogakaraka (owner of 9th and 10th) from Taurus, his argala is benefic. What does it give her? Humility? In the previous example, we were dealing with lagna. Lagna shows true nature, arudha lagna shows perceptions and ghati lagna shows power and authority. When we consider planets and houses, we have to choose what they stand for based on the varga (divisional chart) at hand and the reference point at hand (lagna, arudha lagna, ghati lagna etc). This is why classics give many qualities for the same planet. In the case of lagna, the positive quality Saturn gives is humility. In the case of ghati lagna (fame, power and authority), Saturn signifies popularity among masses. So yogakaraka Saturn's benefic argala on ghati lagna made her popular among masses. Final example: Sanjay's D-24 (chart of knowledge) has a benefic argala of Saturn on lagna and benefic argala of Sun on ghati lagna. In matters of knowledge, he is a humble person because of Saturn's benefic argala on lagna (despite Saturn's debilitation). In matters of knowledge, he is popular among politicians and powerful men, because of Sun's argala on ghati lagna. As far as matters related to ghati lagna (fame and power) are concerned, Saturn signifies mass following and Sun signifies following in the ruling class. As I keep trying to show you again and again, different divisional charts and different lagnas cover different dimensions of human life. Attempting to cover all those with one lagna and one chart results in ambiguity and eventually loss of confidence in classics. Parasara wasn't fooling around when he defined special lagnas and divisional charts. They have specific purposes. Also he did not mention argalas for fun. They too have a purpose. Hope you have learnt something from these freewheeling thoughts.... Rasi Drishti ? QUESTION BY MR.SARAJIT Can You please tell me something about the rasi dristi? => ANSWER BY MR.SARAT CHANDER I don't know if Narasimha has already replied to this as I have not followed the mails closely. However, here it is. Rasi Drishti is called sign aspects. The basic rule is (1) All Chara (Moveable signs) Rasis aspect the Sthira (Fixed signs) except the one adjacent. Example: Aries (Chara Rasi) aspects Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius - all the three being Sthira Rasis and does not aspect Taurus (also a Sthira Rasi) as it is adjacent to Aries. (2) All Sthira Rasis aspect the Chara Rasis except the one adjacent to it. Example: Taurus (Sthira Rasi) aspects Cancer, Libra and Capricorn - all the three being Chara Rasis and does not aspect Aries (also a Chara Rasi) as it is adjacent to it. (3) All the Dwiswabhava (Dual signs) Rasis aspect each other. Example: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces aspect each other. Rasi dirshtis are more permanent in nature while the graha drishti indicates only the desire for the significance. Good or bad aspects of a Rashi dirshti are bound to fructify while those of graha drishti only indicate a possibility. Rashi drishti can be said to be akin to two houses opposite each other (or even as stated in points (1) (2) and (3) above) in the neighbourhood and the grahas in such rasis can be compared with the people living in the houses. The positive and negative influences of the people living in the opposite house is bound to influence the very living of ours. Assume a very pious and dharmic person (say Jupiter) living in the opposite house. His pious and peaceful disposition is certainly going to influence everybody in the neighbourhood. Similarly, if a bad element (say Rahu) were to live in the opposite house the negative influence is bound to take place disturbing the peace and harmony of all. Thus, the grahas occupying the rasis casting rasi drishti are bound to give the results (good or bad) during their periods, while the grahas in graha drishti need not necessarily give such results even though indicative of the same. I hope you get the idea know. ? QUESTION BY Mr. NICHOLAY When, at the analysis of a horoscope, apply Argala, when graha dristi, when rasi dristi? => ANSWER BY PT.SANYAY RATH Argala is an intervention of outside influences on a house or significator. These are normally inanimate like a beneficial Ketu argala on Jupiter can give assets like aeroplanes! (This is an extreme position and experience is the best teacher in handling argala). Graha's are animate or movable objects like men and Graha dristi indicates desire of individuals or the native himself. Rasi dristi are permanent aspects of the signs. Both Rasi and Graha dristi are to be applied simultaneously. Rasi dristi is a permanent aspect while Graha dristi only moulds the desire of the object. For example, Saturn's aspect brings sorrow. If Saturn aspects the second, this could be with regard to family and so on. These are very qualitative as the sorrow always comes due to an incorrect perception or desire. => ANOTHER RELATED ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH Imagine two houses facing each other in the opposite sides of a street. Let us call one Aries and the other Scorpio as these houses aspect each other. Now, the planets stationed in these signs are like people staying in the houses. What happens if these people are friendly to each other, like a priest Jupiter in Aries, the Mantras he says in the morning is going to be beneficial for the house in front as well. As the house and its occupants also benefit from the association with their front door neighbour. What happens if someone tells you that a Criminal has come to live in the house opposite yours? You have not met the criminal, yet there is going to be an apprehension. This is the effect of Rasi Dristi. These are permanent aspects caused due to the signs. They decide your reaction to information and other inputs from the Nature. Application of Rasi Dristi is vital in Jyotish. For example, you will recall how I had explained the Sarpa Yoga and the war in Yogoslavia. It ended as expected when Jupiter entered Aries and broke the sarpa yoga. Now, when Mars moved into Scorpio, it has dristi in its own house and the reconstruction of the place has begun as Mars favours its sign. Argala means intervention while Dristi means aspect. Argala may have dristi, while the vice-versa is not assured. ? QUESTION BY Mr.GAURANGA DAS I have read the chapter on planetary and sign aspects in BPHS. One surprising thing is that Varaha Mihira mentions only the planetary aspects. And usually we consider opposition and the special full aspects by Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and the nodes and on other aspects. Does this mean that these are the most important or strong aspects? Another thing is that Parasara not always gives a full aspect to a planet on the opposing sign. He says that Mars aspects the 7th with one foot, Jupiter with two feet and Saturn with three feet, while other planets give a full aspect on the 7th. (I deduct one foot meaning 1/4 aspect, 2 feet as 1/2 aspect etc.) Please guide me, how should I use the aspects, because I'm confused. => ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH

3
A very valid point has been put forth by you. What comes first "the chicken or the egg". The sign aspects are permanent aspects and do not change with time. They are to understood as two buildings standing in front of each other. These are the inanimate aspects indicating the fructification of the desires in the forms of physical or material changes on the universe. Planetary aspects are like the desire of the planets/ people they represent. Thus, if we say that the aspect of Jupiter is good, it is because the DESIRES of Jupiter are good. Your point about the quantum of aspect is very Vital. All planets aspect the seventh, but the outer planets Mars, Saturn & Jupiter have special aspects. These special aspects are FULL 4pada or 100%. The lower aspects show that the aspect/ desire is very low. WHAT IS SEVENTH HOUSE ASPECT? This is the seventh or KAMA Iccha or the desire for having union with the opposite sex etc. Mars is akin to Hanumanji the Brahmachari who has very little desire (25%) for these things, Jupiter has slightly more (50%) desire while Saturn has 75% desire. All the other planets have 100% desire. thus all planets (representing people can be said to be perverts to some degree or the other. The only exception is KETU, who does not have a head and hence cannot aspect the 7th house. Thus Ketu becomes a perfect Brahmachari and strives for Moksha. Thus, Ketu is always punishing people so they become perfect Brahmachari, renounce their wrong desires and attain Jagannatha. Even Bill Clinton was punished during Jupiter dasa-Ketu Antardasa for his affair with Monica Lewinsky. ? ANOTHER RELATED QUESTION BY MR.YASOMATINANDANA DAS Could you explain the difference between Argala and Rashi-drishti? => ANSWER BY Mr.SARAT CHANDER I will attempt the reply to rashi drishti. Imagine the two rasis as two opposite houses, which look at each other and the planets, disposited in these rasis as people living in the opposite house and yourself living in the other. Obviously, a good neigbour in the opposite house will be most welcome to you, as will have good neighbourly relations and the vibrations of such a relationship will have a good effect. Eg., imagine Jupiter living in the opposite house. Obviously the pious qualities of the neighbour will spell good effects on you too. On the other hand, if a dacoit or Rahu were to live there, you will live fearing the worst constantly. But at the same time you cannot escape seeing or ignoring this house or the people living in it as it happens to be just opposite in the immediate neighbourhood. This is the effect of Rashi Drishti. Hope this explains. ? FOLLOW UP QUESTION BY Mr.YASOMATINANDANA DAS You were discussing about 7th graha aspects with Sanjay Prabhu. Recently while rereading BPHS bumped against a seeming contradiction. At the end of the Rashi Dristi chapter Parasara does discuss the 1, 2, and 3 pada 7th aspects for Mars, Jupiter and Saturn respectively. But in the beginning of the Graha Dristi chapter Parasara says that it is a well-known fact that all planets have full 7th aspect. Can you help understand in which circumstances are those statements should be applied to avoid seeming contradiction . => ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH I have mentioned this thing about desires earlier. This applies to the second part of the quote i.e. about the pada's of dristi while the first part applies to the ability to see things or "have knowledge of". Thus all planets aspect the seventh or they have the knowledge of the happenings of the house in the seventh from their station. To what extent they desire these things in the seventh house is seen from the "Dristi Pada". Maharshi Jaimini has also expressed a similar opinion when he assigns the seventh from Lagna and the Moon for Hridaya (Not physical heart, but emotional desires). Let us say you have Saturn in the ninth house. So, Saturn aspects the 11th (income), third and sixth houses. Since Saturn can give very strong desires due to depriving the person from the items it aspects, these houses will also show the strong desires the person will have and that these desires will be the cause of sorrow (Saturn's aspect). the aspect on the 3rd house is full in the sense that Saturn knows all that happens out there and that it can fully influence the third house, but this is not the priority of Saturn. Its aspect on the sixth gives rise to enemies and desires to win in conflicts (10th aspect-Upachaya aspect is top priority with Saturn the Labourer). Its aspect on the gains (third aspect another Upachaya and desire to show Parakrama is next priority with saturn) reduces gains and brings misfortunes...etc. Thus, in the ninth Sani is bad both by placement and graha dristi as well. Argala ? QUESTION BY MS.LAKSHMI DEVI Someone please answer this question. I saw the posts regarding rashi dristi. However this is a little different. This is probably basic/ stuff that I missed somewhere but please answer My question is- can the SIGN in question be influenced by the SIGNS on either side of it ? For example- my lagna is Gemini- so do the qualities of cancer , and taurus help make up/influence the Gemini lagnas nature? Mithuna is supposed to have weakness for romance. Is this not only because Venus rules house of romance 5th,12thbed pleasuresbut also because TAURUS itself, is on one SIDE.Cancer is on the other? So really regardless of where Gemini is,-is its very nature influenced by the signs on either side of it namely cancer/taurus. So to understand Libra we see they are influenced by scorpio/virgo influence in general-of course to be modified by house placement and planets, etc ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH "NO BODY, WHETHER PLANET OR SIGN, CAN ASPECT THE SIGNS NEXT TO IT, EXCEPT THE GREAT CAUSE OF REBIRTH I.E. RAHU". Rahu represents the Various desires and other evils which have eclipsed our Dharma (Sun) from the very time our Atma had an independant existance from the Paramatma. This causes rebirth again and again as RAHU HAS A SPECIAL ASPECT ON THE 12TH HOUSE RECKONED IN THE REVERSE AS RAHU IS RETROGRADE. thus counted directly this is the 2nd house. The 12th house has to do with Moksha and the ONLY real obstruction to all of us getting Moksha is Rahu. The influence on the 2nd/12th is by way of ARGALA and this is planetary/sign intervention. If a Car is standing right in front of your Car, almost touching it (like the signs next to each other touch each other), it is difficult to go ahead by ignoring its intervention. If there is another Car Behind, then you cannot back out also. In this manner try to visualise the influence of the argala in real life. When you try to visualise, then the PARAMJYOTI awakens and you shall have the power to see the past present and future or to see Bhagavan wherever He wishes to reveal Himself. ? REPLY QUESTION BY MR.ANANTARUPA You wrote: "....NO BODY, WHETHER PLANET OR SIGN, CAN ASPECT THE SIGNS NEXT TO IT, EXCEPT THE GREAT CAUSE OF REBIRTH I.E. RAHU. .....The influence on the 2nd/12th is by way of ARGALA and this is planetary/sign intervention...." Papakartari yoga, Durdhura yoga (Moon with planets in both houses adjacent to herself), Sunapha and Anapha (planets in the second or twelfth of Moon) as well as Veshi and Voshi yogas (planets in twelfth or second from Sun) are examples of planets influencing the sign next to it. Is this due to Argala? Is the following understanding of argala correct? That: Benefic planets in the second, fourth or eleventh from a house boost its significations and promises. Such supportive influence can be obstructed by malefic planets in the twelfth, tenth or third from the house. For instance: If Jupiter is in house two, it boosts the prospects of the first house by way of argali but if Rahu is in house twelve at the same time then Jupiter can only benefit house 1 if it is stronger than Rahu. Is this correct? => ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH Yes the planets ans signs in the second, fourth and 11th do influence its significations. The second is to be understood as the Dhana Argala. For example the second from the Lagna is the Dhanargala on Lagna and gives excellent food that influences health. If the planet is inimical to the natural significator then the argala need not be beneficial. Thus the natural benefic nature is important but the natural relationship is even more important. Saturn in the second gives impure or petrified food and this argala need not be good for health indicated by the lagna. If another malefic is in the 12th to ruin the sleep then the Papakartari and Asubha Yoga on lagna can damage health. Similarly the second house from the arudha Lagna should be strong with planets naturally friendly to the Moon or the 2nd Lord itself being there. This can give wealth and thus augment the artificial image of the person in the world. Argala ? QUESTION BY MR.YASOMATINANDANA DAS I am somewhat confused about how Argala is used in some places in COVA. Generally, the planet WHICH causes argala interferes in the matters of the respective houses. How then can I understand the statements like: "The ascendant (being the eleventh from the third) has argala and shows that such short joneys have a direct bearing on the health and status of the native". To me it would be to interpret it vice versa - something like "the condition of one's health and status will influence the ability (and neccesety) of short joneys" (1st causes argala on the 3rd). And the above statement would be true in the sense that if there are malefic in the 3rd (argala on the 1st) then the native would be fond of such excercise like jogging and this would have a positive bearing on the health. And benefics in the 3rd would have counterargala because of lack of physical action.

4
Similarly, another passage: "The eight house has argala on the fourth, fiths, tenth and eleventh houses showing ones general state of happiness and living coditions, mantra, children and supporters, spouse, Karma and gains have a direct bearing on longevity. Thus it is vital to bear in mind that the birth chart alone is not the final say in determining longevity. The texts say that the saints and spiritualists (mantra, 5th) extend tehir life as per their desire. Similarly many people tend to lose longevity due to their karma (10th)" Again, my (mis-?)understanding of argal would be that one's longevity interferes into the affairs of the above mentioned houses - like "One's longevity and turmoil in life will influence one's happiness, the conditions of one's wife, children and friends as well as the karma he manages to do". It seems, I still have a wrong understanding of the argala concept. Can you please clarify my confusion. => ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH The concept of Argala can get confusing. To understand the relationship between mutual 3 & 11, we should first consider the a benefic in 3. Then there is no Argala on Lagna and the benefic is not going to contribute to the good health of the native. The point raised is with reference to the third house as the focus. Now, the third house rules short journeys and this has the Lagna being in the 11th house from the third. The 3 & 11 have a mutual relationship in Argala. Take an example of a short journey that one makes from the house to office. The clerk may use a public transport like bus to make the journey. Junior officers will use smaller cars and the Managing director uses a Mercedes Benz. Thus the status is reflected through the means of transport used. The making of the journey from home to office is going to "show" to the people who "see" the transport means the status of the native. Here the reference is to the third from Arudha Lagna (/Varga) as status is a part of Maya. The question arising is interpreting this influence of the third house on lagna (or AL). If the short journey is being made in an ambulance, it can indicate a serious fall in health. Vice-versa, the journey itself will have an impact on the person. A person who has to travel a lot in connection with the work may have failing health (if the journey becomes very tiresome). In interpreting Argala, the 11th house does influence the matters of the house concerned, but at what cost is the question. Since the 11th is a house of gains, the 11th from the third i.e. Lagna is the house of gains for the third house. Thus if the third house is gaining something, say energy from the Lagna, then the Lagna has to lose the same. Thus short journeys require expenditure of energy that may or may not be very good for the lagna. That is the point. Except Ketu all other grahas cause a argala when placed in the 4th, 2nd, 11th and the 5th from an aspecting graha or sign Argala to a GrahaBenefic or Malefic 1.Graha in 4th from that house 2.Graha in the 2nd from that house 3.Graha in the 11th from that house. 4.Graha in the 5th from that house. Argala by graha removing the Obstruction. 1.Graha in 10th from the same house . 2.Graha in the 12th from that house. 3.Graha in the 3rd from that house. 4.Graha in the 9th from that house.

For Ketu ,argala is caused by a graha in the 9th from Ketu and is counteracted by the one in the 5th from it. For Rahu and Ketu grahas in the 4th, 2nd, 11th, 3rd and 8th do not cause argala. Next Rule is that say Argala is caused by some Graha in a house. Then the Graha causing the Argala which removes this obstruction is powerfull enough to do so fully only if he traverses a longitude which is more than the longitude of the graha causing the argala in the first place. If on the other hand it is placed in the first few degrees of a sign then it cannot do so The system of Argala is used to determine the activation of planets and houses. Planets in the 4th, 2nd, 11th and 5th houses from a planet, cause "argala" to the planet. The more planets are found in such argala positions, the stronger the effect. A special case is when at least 3 malefics are in the 3rd house. Even though the 3rd is normally an argala obstructing house, malefics in the 3rd are particularly well placed and cause "Vipreet Argala", having the same positive effects as a normal Argala. Obstruction rules : Each argala can be obstructed or broken if there is planet in the house that is symmetrically opposite to the Graha in question. For example, an argala causing planet placed in the 4th would be obstructed by a planet in the 10th. Obstruction can only take place when the obstructing planet is sufficiently strong in Shadbala, and if there are at least as many obstructing planets as there are argala causing planets (for that particular position). An additional rule considers the signs as having 4 quarters of 7.5 degrees each. The obstructing Graha should be placed in the opposite quarter to (effectively) obstruct: the 1st and 4th quarter are opposites, and the 2nd and 3rd are opposites. For example if the Sun is in the 11th house in 9 degrees (that is the 2nd quarter) it could be obstructed by the Moon in the 3rd house if the Moon is between 15 and 22.5 degrees (3rd quarter). Rahu and Ketu : Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde, and the Argala causing positions and Argala obstructing positions are just the reverse. For example, a Graha in the 10th from Rahu causes Argala, and a Graha in the 4th from Rahu obstructs it. Parashara says that 1 unobstructed Argala will give limited effects, 2 unobstructed Argalas will give medium effect, and more than two unobstructed Argalas will give a strong effect. This phenomena will clearly manifest during the Dasha or Antardasha of such a planet having Argala. Effects of Argala on the Grahas : The effects of the Graha that gets Argala from multiple sources will manifest without obstruction. Whether these effects are positive or negative, depends mostly on the placement of the Graha as discussed in the tutorial section on "auspiciousness". However, argalas caused by malefics will decrease the auspiciousness somewhat, and argala from benefics will increase the auspiciousness. Therfore, the ideal situation would be to have a strong Argala from benefics. Effects of Argala on the Bhavas : The main effect of Argala on a house is that it's prime significations are manifested, for good or for bad. The effects of argala on the houses is described by Parashara thus. Note : Argala on the Lagna, Arudha Lagna, the 7th house and the 7th from the Arudha Lagna will make one famous and fortunate. As you can see, the primary effect of Argala on the houses is not necessarily positive, but depends on the nature of the house. The 3 Dusthan houses (6,8,12) will actually manifest their troublesome nature more, when receiving Argala. As a secondary consideration, argala caused by benefics will give an enjoyable and auspicious effect on the areas of life indicated by the house, while argala from malefics will give somewhat compromised enjoyment. If there is a combination of argalas from benefics and malefics, it would be some of both. Formation of Argala BPHS Chapter 31 Slokas 1-10

5
1. Maitreya: O Mahri Parara, you have told of auspicious effects related to Argala. Kindly narrate its conditions and effects. 2-9. Formation of Argala: Maitreya, I will explain Argala (intervention) to know the definite effects of Bhavas and Graha. Grahas in the 4th, 2nd and the 11th cause Argalas, while obstructors of the Argala will be those in the 10th, 12th and 3rd from a Bhava or a Graha. If the Argala-causing Graha is stronger than the obstructing one, the former will prevail. Or, if the number of Argalas are more than the obstructing Graha, then also the Argala will prevail. If there are 3 or more malefics in the 3rd they will cause Vipreet Argala (more effective intervention) which will also be harmless and be very favorable. The 5th is also an Argala place, while the Graha in the 9th will counteract such Argala. As Rahu and Ketu have retrograde motions, the Argalas and obstructions [on them] be also counted accordingly in a reverse manner. Mahris say that the Argala caused by one Graha will yield limited effect, by two medium and by more than two, excellent effects. Argalas should be counted from a Ri or a Graha, as the case may be. The Argala which is unobstructed will be fruitful, while the one duly obstructed will go astray. The Argala effects will be derived in the Da periods of the Ri or Graha concerned. 10. Special: The Argala caused by placement of a Graha in the first one fourth part of the Ri is countered by another placed in the 4th quarter of the respective obstructive Ri. Similarly a 2nd-quarter Argala is eliminated by the 3rd-quarter placement of another Graha. Commentary In addition to the influence caused y planets with raha-d i and i-d i there is another influence called Argala. Argala is a very important i -d i have a small influence on a concept in Vedic astrology. Argala in Sanskrit denotes an impediment or obstruction. Argala literally means "a bolt". Argala on a house shows an influence that intervenes in its affairs decides some parts of it and loc it down so to spea . Planets having house. Planets having raha-d i have a more concrete influence. Planets with Argala simply decide some parts of the matter signified by the

house. In other words, the influence caused by Argala is decisive. Some suggest that the Argala obstruction places are countable from the Argala place instead of from the original place, or Graha. This is not logical and a glance into Gochar Vedha (obstructions during transits) will confirm this. If the Graha Argala causing and the obstructing Graha described in Sloka 10 are in the respective quarters, the obstruction will take place, otherwise not. Note that the obstruction from the 12th house specifically affects the Argala from the 2nd house; similarly, the obstructions from the 10th, 9th and 3rd houses affect the Argalas from the 4th, 5th and 11th houses respectively, as shown in the first diagram below. The figure below illustrates the pattern of Argalas and their corresponding obstructing Argalas. Note that for Rahu and Ketu this pattern is reversed (use the pattern of Argalas for the obstructing Argalas, and the obstructing Argalas for the Primary and Secondary Argalas). To download this chart to your computer for reference or printing, click here. The literal meaning of the word Argala is 'Bolt' that which has the ability to exert its influence on something. I am pasting below a part of an article I had written long ago. Guru Visti Larsen had written a good article on this topic and perhaps you can request him to upload it on his website as he keeps uploading various articles there for study. The literal translation of the term Argala is Intervention. This could be an intervention caused by a planet in the affairs of the house as well as on the effect of a particular planet. Hence, Argala becomes an important factor when we want to study the results of a particular house or even a planet. Argala from the various planets can also cause certain yogas and can also hinder certain yogas further making its study an important part of any chart. In transit too Argala holds its importance and so will the effects be felt as per the dasas. Various aspects of Argala Argala can have different factors to it. It is mainly a concept, which can further be applied to not only the various planets but also to houses. Thus we study Argala not just as the effect given by a planet on another planet but also its effect on the whole house and the native as well. Argala can be seen from not just the Lagna but from each house too. 1. Planets in one particular house (lets say A) will give Argala to planets in another house (lets say B) 2. Planets from another house (lets say C) may be obstructing the same Argala and changing the results further. 3 .Now how do we reckon the result of house B that is receiving Argala from House A and facing an obstruction at the same time from house C? Here its also important to note which planets are giving Argala and which planet is obstructing it. Are they only malefic planets or benefic and which is stronger. All these factors will make an impact on the results of the house. If the same Argalas are on the Lagna then these factors will affect the native directly. It may give attributes to the persons nature. 4. Argala on various planets can be studied to look at a particular aspect in the chart. For example to see all the influences on the native's wealthsources Argalas on Jupiter can be seen. 5. Argala is also studied not only on the various houses but on Arudha as well. Maharishi Parashar gives simple effects of Argala on Arudha. Should there be Argala on the Arudha Pada, for the natal Lagna and for the 7th from both, the native will be famous and fortunate. A malefic, or a benefic, causing unobstructed Argala, giving a Dristi to Lagna will make one famous. Similarly a malefic, or a benefic, causing unobstructed Argala, giving a Dristi to Dhan Bhava denotes acquisition of wealth and grains, to Sahaj Bhava happiness from co-born, to Bandhu Bhava residences, quadrupeds and relatives, to Putr Bhava sons, grand sons and intelligence, to Ari Bhava fear from enemies, to Yuvati Bhava abundant wealth and marital happiness, to Randhr Bhava difficulties, to Dharm Bhava fortunes, to Karm Bhava royal honour, to Labh Bhava gains and to Vyaya Bhava expenses. The Argala by benefics will give various kinds of happiness, while benefic effects will be meddling with malefic Argalas. Argala by both benefics and malefics will yield results. 6. Maharishis say, that the Argala, caused by one Grah, will yield limited effect, by two mediums and by more than two, excellent effects. Argalas should be counted from a Rasi, or a Graha, as the case may be. 7. The Argala, which is unobstructed, will be fruitful, while the one duly obstructed will go astray. The Argala effects will be derived in the Dasa periods of the Rasi, or Graha concerned. Calculation of Argala The 2nd house gives Argala to the lagna; the 12th house obstructs the same argala.

6
The 11th house gives gains to the lagna; the 3rd house obstructs these gains. The 4th house ensures happiness to the native/lagna; the 10th house obstructs the same. The 5th house shows the future and the 9th show the past. The past always obstructs, the future, which is yet to be. So, 5th house gives argala, the 9th obstructs it. The 8th house gives Argala to lagna, and the 6th house obstructs it. Classification of Argala argala can mainly be classified into: A. PRIMARY ARGALA: Argala given by the houses 2nd, 4th and11th is primary Argala. B. SECONDARY ARGALA: Argala given by houses 5th and 8th are Secondary Argala. Various terms for Argala: 1.Shubh Argala 2.Ashubh Argala or Papa Argala. 3.Virodha Argala. 4.Vipreeta Argala. The topic itself is very detailed but I have given you most of the outlines here. Gradually apply the rules and see a few charts to understand how a planet giving Argala will alter the other results. Best Wishes, Kanupriya

7
A planet or house in the 2nd, 4th and 11th houses from a planet or house causes primary Argala on the latter. Argala by a benefic planet is called a ubhrgala (benefic intervention) and Argala by a malefic planet is called a pprgala (malefic intervention). This simple concept can be better appreciated if some examples are given. The 4th house stands for education. The 2nd, 4th and 11th from the 4th house are 5th interaction with others ( th) and overall character and sa s th and nd houses respectively. One s intelligence (5th) ra ( nd) ma e or rea one s education. If Jupiter is in 5th h ouse, he will give

intelligence and his u h rgala ( enefic intervention) on 4th will help one s education. If ahu is in 5th house his p p rgala (malefic intervention) on 4th will cause obstacles in one's education by way of poor intelligence. Similarly, benefics and malefics in the houses causing Argala cause good and ad intervention. asically the point is that intelligence interaction and sa s decide one's education. They have a decisive role. Let us take another example. Domestic harmony, comfort, well-being and happiness are seen from the 4th house. What are the things that can make or break domestic harmony? Of course, wife, children and other family members! Each of them can intervene in one's domestic harmony. No wonder the 5th, 7th and 2nd houses have an Argala on the 4th house (being the 2nd, 4th and 11 th respectively from the 4th house)! If a malefic in 5th has p p rgala on it it may show domestic clashes and lac of u ha (comfort/happiness) on account of a child. If a enefic in th has u h rgala on 4th it may show domestic happiness due to a caring partner. Apart from the 2nd, 4th and 11th houses from a house, the 5th house from a house has a secondary Argala on it. In the case of learning, Argala of 8th house shows the influence of hard work in learning. Hard work is another decider. of argala. Planets and houses in the 12th, 10th, 3rd and 9th houses from a Virodh rgala and o struct the Argala on it from the nd 4th 11th and 5th example let us say udha uru u ra and ani are in Mithuna M na Me a on 4th (8th is the 5th from 4th) Virodh rgala shows the o struction house or planet cause houses from it respectively. or and Kany respectively. ani is in eing a malefic this is a p p rgala ra are the things that

the 4th from Budha and Mithuna, and he causes Argala on them. With Saturn

(malefic intervention). But Guru is in the 10th from Budha in Mithuna. So he obstructs Saturn's Argala and averts the troubles. Venus is in the 11th from udha in Mithuna and so she holds Argala on them. With Venus eing a enefic it is a u h rgala ( enefic intervention). If Si ha (3rd from Mithuna) is empty, this Argala is unobstructed. Rahu and Ketu: Argalas and Virodh rgalas on ahu or Ketu are calculated antizodiacally. For example, let us say Ketu is in Vi. Then Le, Ge, Sc and Ta are the 2nd, 4th 11th and 5th from Vi (counted anti-zodiacally) and planets in those signs cause Argala on Vi and on the planets in Vi. Virodh rgala is also calculated similarly. The table at right summarizes the Argala relationships among the houses of the chart. In this table,

PA = Primary Argala SA = Secondary Argala PV = Primary Virodh rgala SV = Secondary Virodh rgala

Depending on the matter of interest ta e the relevant house or the relevant K ra a. ind Argalas and Virodh rgalas on it. If there are oth see if more planets cause Argala or Virodh rgala. If they are caused y the same num er of planets compare the strengths and decide whether Argala dominates or Virodh rgala. ased on the signs houses and planets involved guess the meaning of the Argala or Virodh rgala. Using the a ove guidelines we can understand the meaning of Argalas on houses and K ra as.

Primary Argala from the 2nd house shows the basic ingredient for the sustenance of a matter. For example, the 2nd house shows food and it is a basic ingredient for the sustenance of self (1st house). The 5th house shows intelligence and it is a basic ingredient for the sustenance of learning (4th).

Primary Argala from the 4th house shows the basic factor that drives the mood, state and progress of a matter. For example, the 4th house shows comfort and it drives the mood and state of self (1st). The 7th house shows interaction and that drives one's learning (4th). Primary Argala from the 11th house shows the catalyst that can result in gains for a matter. or example the nd house shows character grooming and sa s ra and it is a catalyst in the process of learning (4th).

Secondary Argala from the 5th house shows the additional contributing factors. For example, the 5th house shows emotional situation and that contributes to the state of self (1st). The 8th house shows hard work and that contributes to one's learning (4th).

argala category: RashiNo Comments

Today, you will find many articles about the argala of a planet/sign. However, desipite the best efforts, many of learners cannot use the principles nor can they apply them in the chart. I will not speak about argala in a techical matter, for all about it can be found in books of my Jyotish Guru Pt. Sanjay Rath, as well as classical texts such as Parashara and Jaimini. In the context of understanding argalas, you should analyze each argala in detail (primary argalas are 2.4.11 positions). You should also keep in mind that Virodha Argala completelly may change or block the argala.

Dhana Argala Result on Lagna

I will take one graha position and give you the effect of Dhana Argala. You can check it practical horoscopes and see the results. You will be suprised by the effect found. We will take Rahu position in the 2nd house which has dhana Argala on Lagna. Keep in mind that Rahu can be found in 12 different signs, where resources and effects will be slightly modified, and Rahu can also be found in different positions from different Lagnas, can rule different bhavas and be influneced by different graha. Nevertheless, the effect of dhana Argala of Rahu in 2nd house are as follow: 1. Loss of money which will come through significations of the house ruled by Rahu 2. bad health, loss of longevity in time (deadly disease) 3. shocks and troubles in family which will negativelly affect the life and health of a person 4. Influx of wealth if Guru is placed in Lagna, 3rd, 6th and 10th house. If rahu is placed in Kanja wealth is there, while in Karka, a person will get wealth from foreign sources. In other signs judge accordingly. In any case, there will always be plans and confusion about the money which may cause a lack of mental peace 5. A person is extremelly egoistic, angry and selfish (yet a person hides these within themselves) 6. A speech is diplomatic, a person lies and has no boundaries in speech. May speak a shocking things or revealing personal things which are shocking to others 7. A person is not Sundari (internally and externally beautiful), and nas no style, manners. Eyes are usually small or not appealing (Mark of Rahu). 8. No matter how intelligent a person is, there will be stupid decisions, lack of wisdom during the lifetime, particularly those related to family or money. 9. A person easily losses mental and physical energy, disperce in plans and lacks initiative 10. Life can stop or get entangled in family matters, money or other area depending on the position of other planets and points in 2nd bhava. In this way, you should understand all planets having dhana argala on lagna from 2nd house. This should be wiselly applied on dhana argals on various houses. Argalas the planetary interventions. From Cologne Digital Sanskrit Lexicon: argala: A wooden bolt or pin for fastening a door or the cover of a vessel, a bar , check , impediment ; a wave. Or Name of a hell in Padma Puraana. Argala means a bolt or lock or an intervention. In Jyotish it means an intervention by a Raashi, the Bhaava in the Raashi and Grahas if any in that Raashi will intervene or influence another Raashi, the Bhaava in the Raashi and the Grahas if any in the Raashi. Again these interventions can be blocked by other Raashis (also the Bhaava in the Raashi and the grahas therein) these obstructions are called Virodhargala. As a real life example: Suppose I want to keep cash in my wallet, this is only possible when I withdraw it from my savings. The cash in my wallet will be influenced by my savings, then again the amount of cash that I spend from it will decrease my cash. So my savings intervenes (Argala) in my day to day affairs and the saving in turn is influenced by my spending habit (Virodhargala). Thus we see how each house influences and intervenes in the affairs of other houses, nothing works in isoloation in real life as well as in Jyotish. Argalas are of two types benefic and malefic, called Subhargala and Paapargala. Benefics planets (Subha Graha) cause Subhargala and Malefic Planets (Paapa Grahas) cause Paapargala. There are three categories of Argalas: 1. Primary Argala. 2. Special Argala (Some call it Nirabhasa Argala other call this Vipareeta Argala). 3. Secondary Argala. There are two kinds of Virodhargalas. 1. Primary virodhargala. 2. Secondary Virodhargala. We will deal each one of them: The Primary Argala and Primary Virodhargala.

9
Primary Argala are influences or supports that are instantly or grossly felt, Primary Virodhargala are obstructions that we are aware of instantly and grossly. From a particular Bhaava, Raashi or Graha, the 4th, 2nd and 11th Raashi (with the Bhaava and Graha in it) cause of primary Argala . These Argalas are obstructed by the 10th, 12th and the 3rd Raashi respectively. This means that the Argala of the 4th Raashi is obstructed by the 10th Raashi from the Bhaaava, the Argala from the 2nd is obstructed by the 12th and from the 11th by the 3rd. The fourth Bhaava Argala is technically called the Sukhargala. Sukh means happiness. So you can understand that this Argala intervenes in the Happiness of a particular Bhaava or Graha. The Sukha argala is obstructed by the 10th. What this means is that the fourth from any house is the house of rest, the home and the tenth from any house is the place of work for that house, it is the place where rest is not the priority. Home and office oppose each other (except for the few lucky ones who work from home!) The second Bhaava argala is called the Dhana argala, Dhana means Money or resources, so the second from any Bhaava or Graha intervenes either beneficially or otherwise by influencing the resources available for that Bhaava. The Dhana aargala is obstructed by the 12th Bhaava from the Bhaava under focus. Well, we all know how much our savings are related to our expenses. The second from any Bhaava or Graha shows the amount of resources available to it and the twelfth form that particular Bhaava or Graha shows its expenses and losses. The eleventh Bhaava or Graha Argala from a Particular Bhaava or Graha is called Laabh Argala. Laabh means Profit or gain and this is obstructed by the Bhaava or Graha in the Third. Amongst other things the eleventh Bhaava from any particular Bhaava or Graha shows the gains or profit of that particular Bhaava. Whereas the third from the Particular Bhaava or Graha is the house of courage or daring (carried to the extreme it is recklessness) is required to profit. Remember no risk-no gain. That is why the Third house from a particular Bhaava or Graha falls under a special category of Argala. Special Argala: Malefics in the Third from a particular bhaava or Graha cause Argala on their own in addition to obstructing the Argala of the eleventh from that particular bahaava or Graha. This argala is not obstructed by any bhaavas. Remember only if the third from a particular Bhaava or Graha is occupied by malefics (some say more than two malefics) is this Argala caused, if there are benefics as well as malefics then the malefics should be more in number and strong. It is called as Niraabhaasa Argala by some and Vipereeta Argala by others. This shows that initially the objective is obstructed but later it is achieved due to Paraakrama (extra effort or courage) on part of the Jaatak (native). So even though it is a Paapargala it is still a positive thing as it shows that extra push and drives necessary to achieve the goal. Special Argala is also caused by the planets/sign in the 7th house. This is obstructed by the planet/sign in the Lagna r first house. Secondary Argala and Virodhargala: The fifth from a particular Bhaava or Graha in the Horoscope cause Argala to that particular Bhaava or Graha. This is obstructed by the ninth from that particular Bhaava or Graha. This is a secondary influence and not easily felt or noticed and only with time are these noticed. In a way we all know that the future (our projections and estimates) always subtly influence us to the extent of intervening on our present circumstances and the Future is always obstructed or otherwise by the past. Other even less secondary Argala is of the eight bhaava from a particular Bhaava or Graha and this is obstructed by the sixth Bhaava from the particular Bhaava or Graha. Special rule for Ketu: Maharishi Jaimini in Upadesa Sutra gives the dictum. Vipereetam Ketuh There is a special way of finding Argalas from Ketu. To see Argalas from Ketu we have to reverse the order. The houses which cause Argalas to other Grahas or Bhaavas will cause Virodhargala to Ketu, i.e. the 2nd, 4th and the 11th cause virodhargala and the 12th, 10th and the 3rd cause Argala on it. In addition the 11th house causes special Argala if occupied by malefics. So also the secondary Argalas be reversed. We will illustrate this concept with a Horoscope in the next post on this topic. Till then try to soak it in. RishiRahul and vivek. Combination of Dashas & Transits In the sections on dashas and the section on transits we have already seen a few ways in which dashas and transits are used together. Now let's look at a more complete list of how these two techniques integrate:-When a dasha starts, it marks the start or birth of a new period of time in life. The transits at that start of the dasha will give an indication of how favorable or unfavorable the period will be. Particularly the position of the mahadasha lord is important: The effects are favorable if at the commencement of the dasha, the dasha lord is transitting the Lagna, or is exalted/own sign/friend's sign [in transit]. The results of the dasha will be unfavorable if the dasha lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house [in transit], or is debilitated or in enemy's sign [in transit]. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Of course this principle extends to all the other factors that make a planet favorable or afflicted. Combustion, placement in sandhi and conjunction with malefics are a few other important ones As the dasha progresses, the dasha lords will keep moving in transit. Think of these grahas as activated due to the fact that they are dasha lords, and pay particular attention to their transits over natal grahas, and house cusps (bhava madya).- When the potential of a current dasha lord in the natal chart is reinforced or repeated in its position in transit, it will most likely trigger an event. For example, if the mahadasha lord rules the 12th house, and transits the 12th from the Moon, it may trigger a 12th house related event. A more specialized situation of the former principle is found when the dasha lords interact with each other in transit. This could be a conjunction, aspects, sambhanda or yoga formed. If the dasha lords in transit form such a configuration that reinforces the relationship they have in the natal chart, the effects will be strongly manifested and results in an event.

10
As the dasha lords get strong and weak in shadbala in the transit chart, their effects will also rise and fall. The ashtakavarga scores of the signs transitted by the dasha lords will further affect the favorable or unfavorable results of the dasha period. The above principles should not be used in isolation, but they have to be combined sensibly. Always look for repeating patterns. As stated before, each and every event must be indicated in the natal chart for it to be possible to manifest due to the dashas and transits.Parashara's Light offers several tools to help you use the above principles. When you have a animated transit chart on the worksheet along with a dasha cell, you can right-click on any dasha and the animated transits cell will show the transits at eth time that dasha started. This is very helpful to quickly look at the transits for each dasha change.- The Graphical Ephemeris worksheet shows the dashas and transits alongside. This is helpful to get a month-at-a-time overview of both.- The transit dasha report lets you compile lists of dasha changes and major transits sorted by date Argala or Intervention Introduction to Argala - The term Argala means bolt which fastens objects together for good or ill. In a birth chart, Argala shows how each planet influences every area of our lives, quite beyond the connections usually seen via aspects alone. Argala clearly shows how each planet will influence different areas of our lives leaving no stone unturned. This explains how it is that we continue to eat throughout life, though few planetary periods seem to have anything to do with the activity of eating. Argala also explains how one area of life affects another. Just as our choice of spouse may cause peace or peril to the family or our job may take us away from home, the patterns of Argala effect our lives. A person who masters the concept of Argala will gain perfect knowledge in timing events in astrology. Houses of Argala There are two types of Argala or intervention, one which is a positive support the other which is an obstruction:

Primary Virodha obstruction that is felt immediately and directly.

Primary Argala support that is felt immediately and directly. Secondary Argala support that is felt subtly, but noticed with time.

Secondary Virodha obstruction felt subtly, but noticed in time. Primary Argala will have a direct bearing on the affairs of the house it gives Argala to. The Secondary Argala will have a subtle bearing, in the form of things which are not brought to our immediate attention. A Sign or Planet receives Argala from the following positions taken by other planets or signs and reflected back to it.: Primary Argala: 2 nd, 4 th and 11 th signs from its position. These are known as Dhaanaargala, Sukhaargala and Labhaargala respectively. Secondary Argala: 5 th and 8 th signs from its position. The planets or signs in the 12 th, 10 th and 3 rd respectively, will cause Virodha, or obstruction, to the said houses. i.e. the 12 th house will obstruct the Argala of the 2 nd house, as the 10 th house will cause obstruction to the 4 th house. Similarly the 9 th and 6 th houses will cause secondary Virodha, or obstruction, to the 5 th and 8 th houses respectively. Chart 1 : Argala Chakra From the above we can infer that the sign Pisces receives Primary Argala from: Aries (2 nd), Gemini (4 th) and Capricorn (11 th). This Argala is obstructed by: Aquarius (12 th), Sagittarius (10 th) and Taurus (3 rd). Pisces will receive Secondary Argala from Cancer (5 th) and Libra (8 th) and is obstructed by the secondary Virodha coming from Scorpio (9 th) and Leo (6 th) respectively. Planets in these signs will moderate the results of Argala and obstruction, just as living beings can intervene in the affairs of others. Argala caused by Benefics are called Shubhaargala, while that caused by Malefics are called Papaargala. If a malefic is in the 3 rd sign from a planet or sign, then it causes Vipareeta Argala, or Reverse Intervention. This means that an objective is initially obstructed and then gained later on through some extra effort, which is called Parakrama. The 7 th sign from any sign or planet will cause Argala or Virodha depending on whether the sign or planet is friendly or adverse to the natural significations (Karaka) of the house or planet receiving the bolt. For example, a friendly planet will benefit the house, while a malefic planet will do the opposite. Planets obstructing malefic or Papaargala will benefit the native. Argala and Houses Argala and the mutual relationships between the houses. The mutual placement of the houses from each other gives a better understanding of Argala. Everyone needs to eat to sustain the body and the 2 nd house from Lagna has a direct bearing on the health of the native. Similarly the 4 th house will show the home of a native and his or her mother who is responsible for carrying and nurturing the child to maturity. The 11 th house shows the hopes and the fulfilment of dreams which are essential for the natives journey through life. Malefics placed in these houses will hurt the Lagna, by giving: Bad food (2 nd house), loss of home or dangerous surroundings (4 th) or obstacles in achieving desires (11 th). The 5 th from the Lagna shows the future of the Lagna, namely the children and followers who may shape the natives fortune. Malefics in the 5 th may ca use lack of support from the same. Whereas malefics placed in the 8 th from the Lagna would indicate longevity and sudden events influencing the life of the native. Similarly the 2 nd, 4 th and 11 th from any house or planet must be checked for Argala and Virodha, as well as the 5 th and 8 th houses.

11
Example of Argalas with reference to 4 th house Chart 2 : Argala Chakra for 4th house Above is a chart showing the Argala interactions the 4 th house as the focus. The 4 th house rules primary education, mother, home, vehicles and happiness. Focusing on the topic of education the following can be seen. The 4 th house receives Argala from the 5 th house (2 nd from it) and shows that the intelligence of the native is necessary to sustain the education. The 4 th house receives Argala from the 7 th house (4 th from it) indicating that social-capability, and partners, may enhance the comfort of ones education. The 4 th house receives Argala from the 2 nd house (11 th from it), which shows how ones speech and oral capability is necessary for one to progress properly in education. In long lasting traditions, knowledge was provided orally and not written down. The 4 th house receives Vipareeta Argala from malefics in the 6 th house (3 rd from it) indicating that strife and extra effort maybe needed to learn, if ones oral capabilities fail (2 nd). Depending on the nature of the planet in the 10 th house (7 th from it) the natives education may gain or suffer. This will depend on whether the planet sends the native into work (10 th house rules work) prematurely, or if it sustains the possibility of further education helping the native achieve their professional ambitions. Additionally in this example the 4 th house receives secondary Argala from the 8 th house (5 th from it) showing how research , and new knowledge may help the persons education. Additionally the 4 th house receives secondary Argala from the 11 th house (8 th from it) showing how ones social circle and friends can shape the educations longevity. Planets in the mentioned houses will determine the quality of the Argala. The quality of the Argala depends on whether the planet is friendly or inimical towards the significations (Karaka) of the house it gives Argala to. Argala and karakas of houses In previous chapters the significators (Karakas) of the various houses were given. Planets giving Argala to a house will shape the houses quality. If the planet giving Argala is inimical, or malefic, toward the Karaka of the house the quality of the house will fall. A good example is Saturns placement in the 2 nd house. Saturn will give Argala to the 1 st house whose Karaka is Sun. Sun ru les vitality and the overall health of the native and Saturn is naturally inimical towards the Sun. Hence during a period related to Saturn the natives health will suffer greatly. The reason will be seen from Saturns placement. Saturn in the 2 nd house may indicate bad food, or bad habits. If Saturn is in a friendly sign or exalted sign, the wrong food or wrong habits may come from living too luxuriously without care for ones health.

If a planet that obstructs a house is also the Karaka for that house the planet will forcefully protect its results, whether the native likes it or not. This will ultimately benefit the house. Between a planet giving Argala and a planet obstructing the same, the stronger of the two signs containing the planets must be analysed to deduce the more dominating force. A sign with more planets will be more dominant. If equal numbers of planets are in the signs, then a sign receiving sign sight by more planets is stronger. If they are still equal in strength, the strength of the sign lords must be deduced. The one occupying higher degrees is stronger. Results of Argala and VirodArgala will arise during the periods and sub-periods of the signs/planets giving Argala to the relevant house or sign or planet. Argala and planets Argala can also be seen with reference to the planet itself by treating the planets position as the focal point. Argala with reference to the planets natural characteristics will determine which forces intervene in attaining the significations of that planet. For example, the planets giving Argala to Jupiter will determine which forces will intervene in the native getting fortune. Similarly the planets which give Argala to Ketu will determine which forces help a native attain liberation from the cycle of rebirth. For this purpose ONLY should the Argala given to Ketu be reckoned in reverse. This is depicted below. Chart 3 : Ketu Argala Chakra In this manor the Astrologer should reckon Argala given by a planet to the various houses, their lords, their Arudhas and the Karaka of the houses, as well as other vital points. Examples of Argala Argala shaping ones fortune Chart 4 : Bill Gates October 28th 1955, 21:21:29, TZ: 8:00 West of GMT, 122w20; 47n36 In the chart of Bill Gates, who is among the worlds richest, Jupiter the Karaka for wealth and fortune is in Leo. It is important to see the Argala Jupiter receives from various sign and planets to ascertain how a native accumulates wealth around them. Jupiter in Leo receives Argala from Exalted Mercury and Mars in the 2 nd from it. This shows that communication, specifically the Internet, as well as applications for computers (Mercury) as well as large property and machinery (Mars) will surround him. As this happens in Virgo, the 4 th house, it shows lots of property and also highly advanced modern houses. The obstructions to this Argala are seen from the planets and signs in the 12 th from Jupiter. Cancer is the sign in the 12 th from Jupiter, and it is unoccupied, hence there is no obstruction and the wealth (2 nd) is greater than the expenses (12 th). The 4 th sign from Jupiter is Scorpio the 6 th house, housing Rahu. Rahu in Scorpio can indicate large machinery used for mining (Scorpio resides underground), but this Argala is obstructed by Ketu who is in the 10 th sign from Jupiter, in the 12 th house. Among the two signs (Scorpio and Taurus) Taurus is stronger, as it sees Libra where its own sign is placed, whilst Scorpio sees no other planets and therefore cannot gather as much strength/resources. Ketu (upwards movement) seeing Venus (vehicles) can indicate the use of planes and such airborne vehicles. Saturn and the debilitated Sun also see, or aspect, Taurus and being the 12 th house this shows charity to people (Saturn indicates the masses or the public), around the world (The Sun sees the entire world). The 11 th sign from Leo is Gemini, where the Lagna sits, showing how writing about himself may take up his time and money. However, the 3 rd from Leo is stronger housing 3 planets, obstructing this effort. The 3 planets are in Libra, the 5 th from Lagna, showing the previous mentioned indications (charity, vehicles, etc) will give him power and authority (5 th house). As 2 of the said planets are malefics he will make extra efforts to achieve wealth and fortune. The 5 th sign from Leo gives secondary Argala and shows the subtle interventions to his fortune. This sign is Sagittarius, who is unoccupied, but gathers sight from 3 planets (Moon, Mercury and Mars), while getting obstructed by Aries (9 th from Leo) who gathers sight from two planets (Rahu and Jupiter). The former is stronger, as it gathers resources from more planets, and indicates paper bonds (Mercury), land-investments (Mars), as well as commercials (Moon) as a source of accumulated funds.

12
The 8 th sign from Leo, also gives secondary Argala to Jupiter, and has the Moon posited giving effects similar to the previously mentioned (commercials, landinvestments and bonds). As there are no planets in the 6 th from Leo and Jupiter, the 8 th becomes stronger and will dominate the results. The 7 th sign from Leo and Jupiter is Aquarius and being a malefic sign and the 9 th sign from the Lagna, it indicates problems from the law, who may obstruct the extent of his fortunes and wealth. Argala shaping ones property Chart 5 : Female October 19 th 1949, 13:15:29, TZ: 3:07 East of GMT, 40e54; 2s16 The 4 th house will show ones property and home, and the Argala the 4 th house receives will show the influences which may change the natives residence, and what will influence any property the native owns. The Karakas of the home, specifically the birthplace is the Moon, and the Karaka of lands and property is Mars. The Karaka of buildings is Ketu and must be kept in mind when ascertaining the results of various Argala on the 4 th house. In the above chart, the 4 th house is Aries, a movable sign, indicating a person who may move and may have changed residence many times in life. The 4 th house receives Argala from the 5 th house (2 nd sign from it) which is the unoccupied sign of Taurus. Taurus is a beneficial sign and the exaltation sign of the Moon, which will keep the native close to their country or town of birth. However, this is obstructed by Rahu who is in the 3 rd house (12 th sign from the 4 th). Rahu is greatly inimical towards the Moon hence there is a strong foreign influence that will cause the native to live in a foreign place or country for most of their life. This started when the period of Rahu began and she managed to visit many parts of Asia and Europe. Rahu is also inimical towards Mars, and is the opposite of Ketu, so ownership of land, and stability of home-buildings was lacking in this period, and was not to be seen until the native entered parenthood. The 4 th house receives Argala from the 7 th house (4 th sign from it), which is the unoccupied Cancer. Cancer, being the home of the Moon, would also give happiness in the natives home country, but this Argala is obstructed by Jupiter in the Lagna (10 th sign from the 4 th), and is debilitated. Jupiter is the Karaka for happiness (Sukha) which is also one of the 4 th house traits, and hence during its period the native will be forced to reside in the place where happiness ultimately will be found. During the period of Jupiter, the native moved to another country when the job-opportunities of her husband (Jupiter also signifies husband) decreased in the natives home country. The 4 th house receives Argala from the 2 nd house (11 th sign from it), the unoccupied Aquarius, a malefic sign, causing little gains from property-matters. This Argala is dominated by the obstruction from the 6 th house (3 rd sign from the 4 th), which is stronger than the 2 nd (Aqua) because it receives the sign aspect of more planets. The 6 th house being stronger shows that court cases and legal developments will dominate the natives property matters. With the advent of the sub -period of Mercury, the native had legal problems with a person who claimed to own her land. Mercurys involvement is caused by its sign aspect on the 6 th house. The 4 th house receives secondary Argala from the 8 th house (5 th sign from it) occupied by a badly placed Moon and two dire malefics: Mars and Saturn. This specific combination caused an early death to the natives mother resulting in the native having received support and mothering from other peoples mothers (Mars + Saturn). Hence, early in life the native was living in the homes of other peoples mothers at the advent of Moons period. The 4 th house receives secondary Argala from the 11 th house (8 th sign from it) occupied by Venus. This shows that the native gets support from tourists and travellers, to support her property and home, as is the case with one of her properties. This is however, obstructed by the 9 th house (6 th sign from the 4 th house), showing that some laws of the country may cause obstruction to this. This sign occupied by Mercury and Rahu, as mentioned previously, cause problems with court cases and such disputes. The 10 th house is occupied by the Sun who is friendly towards the Moon, Mars and Ketu, indicating a beneficial Argala on the 4 th house giving good living circumstances during its period. However the Sun is debilitated and the native would become a victim of neglect by her parents and relatives. This is especially so, due to the Sign and Planetary Aspect of Saturn on the Sun. This in fact materialised during the natives early life when the period of the Sun occurred. The reason for this neglect is seen from the lordship of the Sun. Argala shaping the flow of power Chart 6 : Al Gore March 31st 1948, 13:04:16, 5:00 West of GMT, 77w02, 38n54 The flow of power in a persons life is discerned from the Ghati Lagna (GL). Power is signified by the Sun being the king of all creation. Planets inimical towards the Sun will also subdue the power of the native when discerning these effects from the Ghati Lagna. The Ghati Lagna is in Virgo the 3 rd house, showing that power comes through conscious effort and indicates a native who will fight for power. The Ghati Lagna receives Argala from the 4 th house (2 nd sign from it) housing Ketu and Hora Lagna. Ketu is in Kendra to the Lagna among 3 other malefics Saturn, Mars and Rahu, showing the presence of a Sarpa Yoga. As a result the native may be surrounded by immoral people, criminals, lawyers and such. We may infer that these people would have contributed to his power, and that being during a very young age. As Ketu Dasa occurred at birth this confirms that political power already residing in the family of Mr. Gore. These immoral activities would also have enhanced the flow of wealth in his life shown by the Hora Lagna in association with Ketu. The Ghati Lagna receives Argala from the 6 th house (4 th sign from it) housing Jupiter and Moon. Moon is Lagna lord here joi ning the 6 th house and its lord causing Dhimantah Yoga. This would give Mr. Gore a very high level of intelligence, which would lead him to a high throne of power. The union of the Moon and Jupiter also causes Gajakesari Yoga which is sure to seat Mr. Gore on a high throne. This was in fact prominent when Mr. Gore continuously won his seat in congress in 1976, 1978, 1980 and 1982, very easily. This all happened during Moons Dasa. In the same period of the Moon, he gained a seat in the senate in 1984. Jupiter Dasa is yet to run, and will come to pass in 2010 and will be excellent for Mr. Gore. The Ghati Lagna receives Argala from the Lagna (11 th sign from it) housing Retrograde Saturn and a debilitated Mars. Mars being a friend of the Sun will, although being malefic, ensure the natives power during its period, while Saturns presence may cause some tension in the seat of power. Planets in Lagna

13
indicate that during their periods/sub-periods the native may start raising his true goals and ideals. Incase of Saturn in Cancer in the Lagna, this would be the highest of ideals namely the seat of power. In 1987 during Mars Dasa, Mr. Gore announced that he was entering the presidential race. During this period Mr. Gore won sev eral elections in the southern States. His campaign was going extremely well, making him a leading contender for the 1992 presidential elections (in the dire end of Mars Dasa). However, after his son Albert III was hit by a car when the two of them were returning home from a baseball game, Mr Gore decided to sit out the presidential elections. Instead he became Mr. Clintons running mate for the election that Mr. Clinton won very successfully. Here Mars showed its weakness, being debilitated and conjoined the evil Saturn. Since Mars is the 5 th house lord, the weakness was displayed through his childrens misery. The Ghati Lagna receives secondary Argala from the7th (5 th sign from it). This shows Mr. Gores unseen power which he receives from fans and followers. Being the 7 th house, it shows partners (in both business and pleasure) who will support Mr. Gore. However; this Argala is obstructed by the 11 th house (9 th sign from Ghati Lagna) housing a strong Venus in own sign. This shows strong support from friends, especially women, who may have taken an interest for Mr. Gore due to his power. This manifested in his school days from 1949 to 1969, after which Mr. Gore was drafted for Vietnam. The Ghati Lagna receives secondary Argala from the 10 th house (8 th sign from it), which is occupied by Rahu. This shows the unseen support that most politicians receive from Image makers, political spies and surveyors, or others who are able to spot political manoeuvres. This Argala is obstructed by a strong Mercury in the 8 th house (6 th sign from Ghati Lagna) showing support from his work and associations in the communications industry (10 th from Arudha Lagna). The Argala of Rahu became prominent when Mr. Gore became vice-president in 1993 during whilst the period of Rahu ran. However, as soon as the sub-period of Mercury began in end of 2000 he lost this support, which was the focal point in his many years in the shadow of President Clinton. Hence with the obstruction to Rahu, Mr. Gore lost his ability to spot the sinister tactics employed by other political rivals. This led to the loss of the Presidential elections in September 2000. The 7 th sign from Ghati Lagna is occupied by the Sun, which is the significator of power itself, and the Sun being in the 11 th sign from the Arudha Lagna, shows that this would also be his source of gains in life. Hence Mr. Gore receives an excellent support and as Sun is in the 9 th house, the support came from his father who was a prominent politician in his days and his fathers contacts. Argala shaping ones image Chart 7 : Male August 7th 1963, 21:15 Sambalpur, India (84e01 ; 21n18) The image one has in society and their material bliss can be seen from the Arudha Lagna. As Image is a mental projection of the mind the Argala and Obstructions must be gleaned through friendship or enmity with the Moon. The Argala formed on the Arudha Lagna will show the support or obstructions one receives to this image. The Arudha Lagna is in Sag the 10 th house and is occupied by Ketu. This shows that the native has a mystical image similar to that of a sadhu. As this happens in the 10 th house, this image will manifest through his occupation. The native is an astrologer. The Arudha Lagna receives Argala from the 11 th house (2 nd sign from it), which is occupied by Retrograde Saturn. Saturn is very inimical toward the Moon and hence would naturally be adverse for the natives image in society. Saturn is in its own sign of Capricorn, making it strong and auspicious for his image. However its natural enmity with the Moon will make the native secluded or secretive at times and will not support his name and fame. As this happens in the 11 th house it supports his traditional learning of the occult sciences. As Saturn is also the Chara Atmakaraka for the native he has and will experience a great deal of sorrow in this area of life. The Arudha Lagna receives Argala from the 1 st house (4 th sign from it), which is occupied by a stationary Jupiter. This ind icates that much of the natives fortune will come through the natives own (Lagna) tradition (Jupiter). This also indicates a deep level of knowledge occupying the native, which would manifest itself through sleep or meditation. The Argala of Jupiter is obstructed by Mars showing his image, at times, will be coloured by his aggressive outbursts toward his partners, though calmed down by Ketus sign sight on Mars. However as Jupiter is stronger than Mars, this aggressive image is only temporary. The Arudha Lagna receives Argala from the 8 th house (11 th sign from it), which being occupied by Ghati Lagna, shows a flow of power coming to his image through his occult work (8 th house). However this is obstructed by the 12 th house (3 rd sign from AL) occupied by the Moon in a sign lorded by Saturn. This shows that the native may renounce all the fruits which may have coloured his image in the past and take on the life of an ascetic. This has yet to be seen. The Arudha Lagna receives secondary Argala from the 2 nd house (5 th sign from it), which is unoccupied. Being the 2 nd house, it shows how the natives family offers support to the natives image. This is however obstructed by the stronger 6 th house (9 th sign from the AL), occupied by Mercury and whos suffering a Papakartari Yoga. This shows his image influenced by many fights, arguments and even court cases. Mercury is also involved in a Sharada Yoga with the Moon, hence the court cases will give the native immense blessings in the finer-details of law. This manifested in the period of Mercury. The Arudha Lagna receives secondary Argala from the 5 th house, which is occupied by Venus and Sun causing Matsya Yoga. The presence of this Matsya Yoga shows how the native may have some hidden knowledge of various sciences such as Astrology, the Vedas, etc, which will sustain his image in society, though the source of his knowledge will not be prominent. Venus being 8 th lord and Chara Pitri Karaka, indicates that this knowledge is of an occult nature, and comes from the paternal heritage. The 7 th from the Arudha Lagna is the 4 th house occupied by Rahu, a dire malefic for the image. This shows that the native will be obstructed by foreigners. However; being exalted in the 4 th house, it helped the native through his education in a popular and highly esteemed foreign school. The native attended primary school which was based on English principles, while residing in India. In this manor the Astrologer should reckon the Argala given by a planet to the various houses, their lords, their Arudhas an d the Karakas of the houses, as well as other vital points. Om Tat Sat Refer: Brhat Parasara Hora Shastra: Argalaadhyaaya, Sloka 3 Maharshi Parasara explains the additional Argala from the 5 th house as follows: pm< cagRlaSwana< nvm< diraexkt!, The addition of the 8 th house to this scheme becomes apparent in the description of the effects of Argala. Liberation; also known as Nirvana or Moksha. Jaiminis Upadesa, Adhyaya 1, Pada 1, Sloka 9: ivprIt< ketae>. - Reverse for Ketu. To see which resources are available to a planet or sign, Sign Sight or Rasi Dristi should be used. 3 malefics in the quadrants to the Lagna causes Sarpa Yoga, which causes criminal or immoral activity around the native. The 2nd and 4th houses, when occupied by planets give effects early in life. Dhi-mantah Yoga is created with the union of Lagna lord and 6 th or 5 th houses/lords, and causes a person to be an eager student and researcher. The native will be highly intelligent. Generally Jupiter in a quadrant sign from the Moon causes Gajakesari Yoga. The Yoga is strong especially when Jupiter is strong. The effects are a person who works his way to power/fame easily, and through pure efforts. Periods of planets always tend to get more evil towards the end, whilst are very beneficial in the beginning. Image makers are those who are able to shape the image of politicians. A Sadhu is a person who lives an ascetic life in search and worship of God.

14
The 11th house is the 4th (learning) from the 8th (occult) and hence shows the learning of occult sciences such as Astrology and such. The nature of planets in the 11 th house, will show the type of upbringing... Saturn indicates strict traditional upbringing. Stationary benefic planets show activities related to meditation, sleeping etc. Malefic planets do not enjoy standstill and can burn down the house they sit in. Malefics placed in the 2nd and 12th signs from a planet or sign, causes Papakartari Yoga on the planet/sign. Sharada Yoga is caused when Mercury is in a quadrant from the Moon, whilst Moon occupied the 0-9 degrees of a Movable sign, 10-19 degrees of a fixed sign and 20-29 degrees of a dual sign. It gives blessings of Saraswathy in learning. Benefics in 1st/9th, Malefics in 4th/8th whilst planets occupy the 5th house, gives Matsya Yoga, which makes the native an intelligent astrologer or seer. Matsya means fish and is a reference to the fish-incarnation of Vishnu who saved the knowledge of the Vedas before they were lost by time. As stated before, Secondary Argala are unseen, or not prominent. The concept of Argala INTRODUCTION Here is a small writeup on Argala to ignite your curiosity more and give some guideline on working with Argala. Study this and try out the argala and its obstruction in your seconds house. It is written in jyotisha shastras that signs/ planets placed in the 2nd, 4th and 11th from a house/ karaka have argala to it. Whereas planets placed in the 12th shall oppose the argala of 2nd, 3rd will oppose 11th and 10th shall oppose the argala of 4th. The secondary argala is caused by signs/ planets in 5th and 8th from a house/ karaka and planets/ signs in 9th and 6th from it shall oppose it. Lets see what is the practical use of the concept of argala. THE CONCEPT We know that none of the activities in this world happen in isolation. There are many factors which each activity in our life. Argala is a JyotishTool to analyse how the argala influence our activities. To understand thislets take an example: Lets find out what are the factors which influence our worklife or karmakshetra indicated by the 10th house. They are: 1. Our Attitudes and Personlity 2. Intelligence 3. Drive and Vitality 4. Health 5. Job-Satisfaction 6. Income from the Job 7. Friends circle 8. Stress and Tension 9. How much tiring the job is? Now we can broadly classify these indications into the following houses: Lagna:1. Our Attitudes and Personlity 2. Intelligence 3. Drive and Vitality 4. Health 5. Job-Satisfaction 11th house 6. Income from the Job 7. Friends Circle 8th house 8. Stress and Tension 9. How much tiring the job is? Now we see that the common link between these three houses are that, they have argala on the 10th house or work. Now the planets placed in these houses shall positively or negetively affect the work. Like if Rahu is placed in the Lagna, the person shall have no job satisfaction and prone to take wrong decisions at job as Rahu is an enemy to the Karaka for Intelligence and wisdom, Jupiter. Now lets see how to analyse the argala of a planet on a given house. We shall take a step by step approach to look at that: 1. Find the Karaka of the House under focus. For the present case, this happens to be 10th and the karakas are: a. Sun- Recognition at workplace b. Mercury - Intelligence and communication c. Saturn - Persistence, Patience and Hardwork d. Moon- Nature of Workplace 2. Find the relationship of the planet causing argala and the karaka of the house, If the relationship is friendly then that will have positive influence on the significations ruled by the Karakas under consideration. Here we have to look at two things: a. The influence due to the natural nature of the planet b. The influence based on the house (11th, Lagna, 8th) causing the argala on the concerned house (10th) Lets take an example, where Jupiter is causing Argala from the 11th. This shows that, the native shall get due recognition at the workplace as Jupiter is a friend of Sun (point a). Because of the Subhargala, there will be some good frinds who shall help the native at his workplace (point b) and he will get pretty decent income commensurating his work (Point b). 3. Find the Karaka of the House, where the Argala causing planet is placed. The extent to which the Argala causing planet shall promote or diminish the result of the house under consideration is based on how much support it is getting from the Karaka of the house it is placed. We know that the karaka for gain is Jupiter for the 11th house. If Jupiter is placed in the 11th, then the person's income is supported. 4. Find the Lord of the house, where the Argala causing planet is placed. Along with the Karaka, the dispositor of the Argala causing planet can support or oppose it based on its relationship with the karakas of the house under consideration and also the argala causing planet. 5. Virodhargala: Virodha means opposition. Here we shall see the strength of opposition on existing argala. More planets or stronger planets in the virodhargala causing house show one of the following situation. (a) Virodha is stronger, if the virodhargala planet is favourable, whereas the argala in unfavourable or (b) Virodha is unfavourable whereas the argala is favourable to the karaka of the house under consideration.
